A Contextual Approach To Investigating Verbal And Nonverbal Behaviors, Douglas M. Brooks, Barry Wilson Jan 1975

A Contextual Approach To Investigating Verbal And Nonverbal Behaviors, Douglas M. Brooks, Barry Wilson

Faculty Publications

This investigation utilized a recent concept developed by researchers and theoreticians studying nonverbal behavior--the contextual framework. Instruments of demonstrated reliability were employed to record simultaneous verbal and nonverbal data within the selected contextual framework of student-initiated questions. Data was collected at the University of Northern Iowa; Malcolm Price Laboratory School. The study sample included 15 teachers from grades one through twelve and 60 pupils. Pupils were placed in categories by their teachers: (1) accepting; (2) concerned; (3) indifferent; and (4) rejecting. Objectives of the investigation included: (1) to investigate physical proximity as a quantifiable dimension of nonverbal behavior; (2) to …

History Of The Zoology Section Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, Paul Meglitsch Jan 1975

History Of The Zoology Section Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, Paul Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the early years, all papers presented at the annual meetings of the Iowa Academy of Science were delivered at general session. Evidently a number of members felt that they would be better able to discuss and appreciate the papers if they were given at sectional meetings. This had the further advantage of permitting the inclusion of more papers in the program. Professor L. S. Ross, then secretary of the Academy, suggested in 1914 that papers be given at sectional meetings. In 1916 this was done for the first time.

As one of the original sections, the Zoology Section has …

Analysis Of The Occupational Status And Choice Patterns Of Women, Terry L. Besser Jan 1975

Analysis Of The Occupational Status And Choice Patterns Of Women, Terry L. Besser

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There were two parts of this study. The first part involved a determination of the status of women. Occupation, education and income criterion were used and it was concluded that educationally and occupationally, women were increasing their status relative to men. But the income of working women in contrast to men employed in the same fields was at an all time low. The central locus of the low occupational status of women was seen to be in women's continual choice of pursuing traditional female jobs. This leads to the second part of this study which was concerned with why women …

A Diagnostic-Prescriptive Procedure For Teaching Adolescent Dyscalculics, Constance Ellingson Byrnes Jan 1975

A Diagnostic-Prescriptive Procedure For Teaching Adolescent Dyscalculics, Constance Ellingson Byrnes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A procedure of individual diagnosis and educational prescription was developed for classroom teachers in the regular school program. A means of gathering and managing data including the use of task analysis was recommended. The procedure was demonstrated in selected case studies. A five-part model was developed to systematically diagnose the learning problem manage the information gathered in the diagnosis, and present a prescription or teaching strategy to remediate the errors. Step I was the diagnosis of mathematical errors. Samples of mathematical computation were collected. Errors were selected for prescription if the student made systematic errors and if a series of …

A Study Of The Loss-Of-Innocence Theme In Selected Novels Of Robert Penn Warren, Beverly S. Fisher Jan 1975

A Study Of The Loss-Of-Innocence Theme In Selected Novels Of Robert Penn Warren, Beverly S. Fisher

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Using Mordecai Marcus's ''What Is an Initiation Story?" and R. W. B. Lewis's The American Adam to define the loss of innocence, this study follows the protagonists of three Robert Penn Warren novels-- Wilderness, World Enough and Time, and All the King's Men--through their steps from innocence to knowledge, initiation, or the loss of innocence. A similar pattern is seen in the lives of Adam Rosenzweig, Jeremiah Beaumont, and Jack Burden. Each is well beyond the age normally associated with initiation and has gone through experiences which should have caused the loss of innocence. Each has refused the initiation (at …

Perception And Production Of /R/ In Four-Year-Old Children: A Comparison Of Two Points In Time, Mary Pamela Hauser Jan 1975

Perception And Production Of /R/ In Four-Year-Old Children: A Comparison Of Two Points In Time, Mary Pamela Hauser

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The literature suggests a relationship between the perception and production of speech sounds. Data has been gathered from normal and sound-defective children who were three years, five years, and older. No comparative research has been done with four-year-old children. Furthermore, no longitudinal data has been gathered on a single group of children. This study was essentially a replication of the Bronsema (1974) research. Specifically, it compared the self-perception and other-perception performances of Bronsema's research population, in 1975, the year following the Bronsema study. The examiner tested the children, who were now four years old, and compared the 1975 inter-group results, …

Sports, Sexism, And The Media Specialist, Kathleen Marie Mccrea Jan 1974

Sports, Sexism, And The Media Specialist, Kathleen Marie Mccrea

Graduate Research Papers

The media specialist who is aware of social change is undoubtedly aware that today sexism pervades most institutions of American society. The discriminatory practices-accorded women and men in jobs, in the churches, in the homes, and in the schools have been well-documented. Living one's life on the basis of one's sex, once traditional, is no longer accepted as the way living must be. American legislative bodies have resultingly passed federal and state laws and have proposed the Equal Rights Amendment--all of which would ban discrimination on the basis of sex in specific and general circumstances.

Some Temporal Factors In Visual Pattern Recognition. Ii, Lee S. Cohene, Harold P. Bechtoldt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Pairs of random dot patterns in which the patterns of each pair formed bigrams when superimposed were used to investigate the hypothesis that the temporal integration of visual patterns reported by Eriksen could he extended toward the longer time scale used in studies of eidetic imagery. An integration theory suggests that when the dot pattern stimuli are temporally separated, the neural trace arising from the first pattern must be combined with the second pattern for a verbal recognition to occur. However, the unexpected results of the present study indicated that a first dot pattern of 1, 3 or 5.4 sec. …

Programed Instruction And The Card Catalog, Colette Tobin

Graduate Research Papers

An extensive amount of research has been done regarding programed instruction and also regarding programed instruction versus traditional teaching. However, very little research has been done in the area of programed instruction as a method of teaching the use of the card catalog. 1'7 rom studies that have been conducted; however, conclusions and assumptions can be made as to the feasibility of teaching the card catalog using programed instruction.

Discrimination Between Mediated Facilitation And Mediated Inhibition Items, Bruce K. Britton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a class of mediation paradigms investigated intensively by Schulz (1972), data suggested that subjects were capable of discriminating rapidly and accurately between mediated facilitation and mediated inhibition items. An experiment was conducted in which this discrimination was tested directly. Results showed the discrimination occurred.
