Content Analysis And Categorization Of Violence In Young Adult Novels, Janice Burriss Reelitz

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper was to develop a means of identifying and categorizing violence in young adult novels. The professional literature reviewed helped to determine a working definition of violence and also provided insights for the researcher on how violence is categorized in the various medias by educators and socialogists. The identification and categorization of violence was applied to ten selected novels to form the basis for this research. The researcher selected five experts in the field of young adult literature who were interviewed and asked to submit ten or more titles of novels that they knew young adults …

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science 1977-78, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The completion of the 100-year history of the Academy in the fall of 1974 led to the current practice of writing a running history on a year-to-year basis, in the form of the Annual Report. The Board of Directors decided in the fall of 197 5 to publish the Annual Report in the PROCEEDINGS. Recent committee reports and Board minutes, from which most of this report derives, are on file in the Academy office. Records older than 1975 are in the Special Collections section of the Iowa State University Library, constituting the official archives of the Academy.

Structure And Characterization In Popular Adolescent Fiction, Marcia Fox Jan 1978

Structure And Characterization In Popular Adolescent Fiction, Marcia Fox

Graduate Research Papers

For this study the author identified two criteria to be examined in junior novels. These criteria originally came from Stephen Dunning's five categories which he suggested as representative criteria against which the literary quality of the junior novel could be measured. The two categories chosen were structure and characterization in the novel. Each aspect of these two categories was defined and then applied to twenty-one junior novels that were fiction. The twenty-one novels examined were chosen from G. Robert Carlsen's list of popular books depicting adolescent concerns in the 1977 and 1978 English Journal. Each book was then measured numerically …

Teaching Both Brains, Roy Unruh Jan 1978

Teaching Both Brains, Roy Unruh

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In the advanced vertebrates, including man, the two large hemispheres of the cerebrum of the brain serve as centers of perception, of voluntary motion, and of the higher mental faculties such as thought and memory. The two hemispheres are connected by several bands of nerve tissue the major tissue being the corpus callosum. The two hemispheres control the motor and sensory responses of the opposite sides of the body. Some hemispheric differences in function were reported as early as 1861 when Dr. Paul Broca observed that patients with lesions on their left cerebral hemispheres were more likely to suffer loss …

On Visual Art And Camouflage, Roy R. Behrens Jan 1978

On Visual Art And Camouflage, Roy R. Behrens

Faculty Work

In a number of books on visual fine art and design [1, 2], there is mention of the kinship between camouflage and painting, but no one has, to my knowledge, pursued it. I have intermittently researched this relationship for several years, and my initial observations have recently been published [3]. Now I have been awarded a faculty research grant from the Graduate School of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to pursue this subject in depth. I am, therefore, collecting documents and personal accounts pertaining to historical and theoretical connections of the kind that are listed below.

How Do I Get There From Here? Attitudes Toward Different Modes Of Transportation, Molaan K. Mosell, Connie M. Lamka, Morris J. Gray, Irwin P. Levin Jan 1978

How Do I Get There From Here? Attitudes Toward Different Modes Of Transportation, Molaan K. Mosell, Connie M. Lamka, Morris J. Gray, Irwin P. Levin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The acceptance of multiple-occupant modes of transportation such as buses and carpools is an important factor in energy conservation. Two experiments are reported which show how attitudes toward different modes of transportation are influenced by interpersonal factors. Experiment 1 showed that individuals perceive differences in the characteristics of people who use different modes and that these differences are related to their own transportation preferences. Experiment 2 showed that the sex of each potential rider and whether or not each rider is an acquaintance of the respondent are important factors in carpooling. The implications of such results to policy makers are …

Survey Of Iowa Teacher Preparation Programs In Speech Communication, Douglas M. Trank

Iowa Journal of Communication

Institutions and individuals involved in the preparation of speech and drama teachers in Iowa currently face a number of critical issues. The Speech Communication Association, in consultation with the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education programs, has prepared a detailed set of guidelines for undergraduate and graduate speech and drama education programs. These guide-lines will be used to evaluate college and university teacher education programs that wish to obtain or maintain N.C.A.T.E. approval in the future. Eighteen Iowa institutions currently hold N.C.A.T.E. endorsement in secondary speech education.

Language Concept Development In Differentially Educated Deaf Children: The Aural/Oral Versus A Simultaneous Approach, Sheril L. Doughman Jan 1978

Language Concept Development In Differentially Educated Deaf Children: The Aural/Oral Versus A Simultaneous Approach, Sheril L. Doughman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study was designed to compare the understanding of the fifty items on the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts (Boehm, 1971) in three groups of eight children ranging in age from 5-3 to 11-6 years. One group consisted of deaf children who were primarily educated in the aural/oral method (AOM). This approach is said to utilize residual hearing, amplification, speech, and speechreading while signing is discouraged or forbidden. The second group consisted of deaf children who were taught in a simultaneous method approach (SM). Natural gestures, fingerspelling, facial expression, body language, and a signed language system in conjunction with …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Seriation And Classification Skills In Young Children, R'Delle Marie Anderson Jan 1978

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Seriation And Classification Skills In Young Children, R'Delle Marie Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The results of the Benziger Early Learning Assessment (BELA) classification and seriation subtests previously administered to 359 white, primarily middle-class preschool and primary grade school children were analyzed to determine the degree of relationship, interaction and parallelism between these two cognitive skills across age groups of children. In addition, the existence of any sex differences in performance was examined. The 359 children were grouped into three successive age groups at six-month intervals beginning with the age of four years and six months.

Results indicated that the relationship between seriation and classification, as measured by the BELA, was positive and quite …

Sculptural Constructions In Fabric, Judith Keipp Johnson Jan 1978

Sculptural Constructions In Fabric, Judith Keipp Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The title of this artist's thesis exhibition was "Fibre Works," but this abstract title is more appropriately "Sculptural Constructions in Fabric. It has been her experience that "fibres" is often associated . . with the weaving process and it is important to note that she works with fabrics--the end product of weaving. The artist's objectives are three-fold: 1) to take advantage of various fabric properties and utilize those qualities in a three-dimensional form, 2) to show clothing influence in the constructions, and 3) to suggest how particular clothing pieces might reflect broader restrictions in people and their environments. Of paramount …

Science And Mainstreaming The Educable Mentally Retarded Students, Muhammad Hanif Jan 1978

Science And Mainstreaming The Educable Mentally Retarded Students, Muhammad Hanif

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The concept of mainstreaming rein forces the belief that all children are capable of learning if education is individualized and attention is given to learning styles, rates of learning, and individual capabilities. It is now widely accepted that children with mild learning impairments should no longer remain segregated and confined to separate classroom situations during their entire day in school. Effective mainstreaming addresses the academic and social needs of all youngsters and functions in the least restrictive environment. The basic assumption that the large majority of handicapped children can be absorbed into regular classrooms with adjustments and adaptations in the …

Achievement Motivation And Achievement: The Role Of Locus Of Control, Marilyn Preston, R. Michael Latta Jan 1978

Achievement Motivation And Achievement: The Role Of Locus Of Control, Marilyn Preston, R. Michael Latta

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The status of locus of control as a moderator of the relation of resultant achievement motivation to achievement was investigated for a sample of females. Locus of control was found to moderate resultant achievement motivation in predicting academic achievement for females. The conclusions to be drawn from these data are not clear since the sample of females was predominantly internal in beliefs about the control of reinforcement. The implications of the definition of internality/externality for future research on this question are discussed.

A Study Of In-School Suspension Programs In Area 7 Of Iowa, Stephen Darryl Glass Jan 1978

A Study Of In-School Suspension Programs In Area 7 Of Iowa, Stephen Darryl Glass

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Suspension has increasingly become one of the foremost problems confronting educational administrators in American public schools. The controversy over the advantages and disadvantages of out-of-school suspension has been on stage in the current educational scene. This conflict has evoked public skepticism and some intervention on the part of courts.

Educators have begun to develop in-school suspension programs as an alternative to out-of-school suspension. The major objective of in-school suspension is to have suspended students remain in the educational setting. This change in practice enables the school and community resources to be more readily used in remediating and facilitating the improvement …

Counselor Perception Of The Need And Role Of Guidance Consultants In Iowa’S Area Education Agencies, Lauren Simonson Jan 1978

Counselor Perception Of The Need And Role Of Guidance Consultants In Iowa’S Area Education Agencies, Lauren Simonson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

While Area Education Agencies (AEA's) have hired consultants in many curriculum areas, few guidance consultants have, at the time of this study, been hired.

The research of literature showed that counselors, at all stages of their career, have need of consultative help. Much of this need arose from an environment in which counselors work. They needed help in reaching their potential. Guidance consultants were seen as a help in reaching this potential.

A survey of Iowa school counselors was made to determine present need and role of guidance consultants. Data was received from one-hundred sixty-four counselors (78 percent of the …
