The Ethics Of Business And Herbert Hoover’S Internationalism, Robin L. Hamilton Jan 1979

The Ethics Of Business And Herbert Hoover’S Internationalism, Robin L. Hamilton

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Is it possible that someone possessed the attributes of a humanitarian and yet acted in such a way that those same characteristics were lost? Could an administrator deal with the plight of the unfortunate members of society and fail to recognize the causational factors of that plight? It would appear illogical to reason that the correct responses to the above questions could be in the affirmative, and yet the affirmative answers seemed to be applicable to the life and career of Herbert Hoover. The time-line ran from West Branch, Iowa, in 1874, ending in that same village in 1964.

The Relationship Between Teacher Sex Role Models And Career Aspirations Of High School Industrial Arts Students, Janet Lynn Robb Jan 1979

The Relationship Between Teacher Sex Role Models And Career Aspirations Of High School Industrial Arts Students, Janet Lynn Robb

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Sex role stereotyping has been the focus of a number of research projects trying to determine just where stereotyping lies and ways to eliminate it. Although most of the research points toward role modeling as a major cause, little has been done to test that theory.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between teacher sex role models and the career aspirations of students enrolled in high school industrial arts courses throughout the United States. This study was limited to tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students enrolled in industrial arts programs in high schools in the United …

Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy And The Moral Criticism Of Rhetoric, W. Thomas Duncanson Jr. Jan 1979

Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy And The Moral Criticism Of Rhetoric, W. Thomas Duncanson Jr.

Iowa Journal of Communication

Writers in the field of rhetorical criticism have long been divided over the role of moral judgment in their work. Among the rhetorical theorists most successful in incorporating moral judgments in their writings are those who, like Richard Weaver and Kenneth Burke, begin with the idea that communication is a moral act and not merely a container for moral content. Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy is a writer in this vein. Unfortunately, his work has been slighted, and it has been ignored entirely as a system for generating widely acceptable moral criticism of rhetorical acts.

A Developmental Sequence For Introductory Speech, Richard Koch Jan 1979

A Developmental Sequence For Introductory Speech, Richard Koch

Iowa Journal of Communication

The beginning teacher of speech confronts two primary problems in taking charge of the speech classroom for the first time: 1. the incredibly frightening feeling that he or she will never be able to remember a speech once it is finished, and therefore will have nothing to say about it, and 2. the more theoretical challenge of organizing the speech assignments into a sequence which will not only make some sense but also promote the development of the students as speakers.

On Overcoming Resistance To Value Measurement, John Waite Bowers Jan 1979

On Overcoming Resistance To Value Measurement, John Waite Bowers

Iowa Journal of Communication

Teachers of communication, especially when their subject is persuasion, often find it analytically desirable to quantify human values. In fact, several leading persuasion theories as well as several theories relating communication to conflict require quantification of "attitudes" and "beliefs" if not of "values." In general, these theories posit that human decisions result from a process in which the person assigns values to the consequences of a particular alternative, calculates the subjective probability or expectation of realizing each of those values, multiplies each value times its subjective probability, and sums the products.

Kindling The Creative Spark, Richard L. Weaver Ii Jan 1979

Kindling The Creative Spark, Richard L. Weaver Ii

Iowa Journal of Communication

When teachers discuss the grading of papers, exams, outlines, or speeches, their comments often reflect the need to quantify human behavior. One teacher said, "I simply list the characteristics I want mentioned and award one point for each one that is discussed." Another said, "I use a check sheet. At the end of a speech I count up the checks and give the grade." Academicians want criteria, competencies, characteristics, lists, and outlines of essential items. There is no denying that such quantification is helpful, but it never tells the whole story. The purpose of this article is to offer the …

An Information Processing Approach To Group Performance Of Poetry: Implications For Adaptation And Audience Research, Sandra Highnam Jan 1979

An Information Processing Approach To Group Performance Of Poetry: Implications For Adaptation And Audience Research, Sandra Highnam

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This investigation explores the relationship between a neurological model of information processing and a group performance of poetry. It focuses upon three considerations: construction of a neurological model of information processing, application of this model to group performance of poetry, and implications for adaptation of poetry and audience research.

A neurological model of information processing is constructed which explains perception in terms of the specialized functions of the left and right hemispheres. According to this model, certain aspects of the environment (stimuli) are more efficiently processed by each hemisphere: the left dealing largely with verbal material and the right with …

Prediction Of Reading Achievement Using Conservation Performance, Jann Moser Bowlus Jan 1979

Prediction Of Reading Achievement Using Conservation Performance, Jann Moser Bowlus

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the relationship between reading and Piagetian conservation ability. It was hypothesized that conservation ability would be significantly related to reading achievement and an addition of a conservation measure to a reading readiness measure would significantly improve prediction of reading achievement.

Forty first and second grade children from a northeast Iowa, middle class, urban school district were involved in this study. They were administered conservation tasks from the Concept Assessment Kit-Conservation during the fall of 1977. In the spring of 1978 Ginn reading mastery scores were obtained and Clymer-Barrett reading readiness test scores were gathered from the school …

Fixed Versus Random Scheduling Of Classroom Activities In A Resource Room Setting, Joanne Marie Fegley Broadston Jan 1979

Fixed Versus Random Scheduling Of Classroom Activities In A Resource Room Setting, Joanne Marie Fegley Broadston

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There has been a dramatic upswing in the number of resource classrooms and students in the last decade. There has also been a lack of research regarding resource students in the resource setting. While teachers have assured that regular classroom practices or methods used with other specialized populations were also appropriate for this new kind of student and setting little research has been done to either support or reject these practices or methods. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect which assigning class takes in a fixed order, rather than a random order, had on the numbers …

The Effect Of A Preoperational Puppet Show On Anxiety Levels Of Hospitalized Children, Joyce Lee Bernard Jan 1979

The Effect Of A Preoperational Puppet Show On Anxiety Levels Of Hospitalized Children, Joyce Lee Bernard

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated effects of a preoperative puppet show on anxiety levels of hospitalized children as measured by the Palmar Sweat Index (PSI). Subjects were 28 children, ages 2-7 years inclusive, allocated randomly to treatment and nontreatment groups. Treatment consisted of a puppet show designed to familiarize patients with hospital routines and with procedures of their operations. Two PSI measures were collected for each subject, and average difference scores of individuals among all measures were compared. Analyses of variance were used to test mean differences with data categorized by treatment, by sex, and by interaction of sex and treatment. There …

Portraits: Psychological Studies Of Individuals By The Use Of Pictorial Form, Color, And Theme, Janice Spivey Johnson Jan 1979

Portraits: Psychological Studies Of Individuals By The Use Of Pictorial Form, Color, And Theme, Janice Spivey Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Bringing "life" to a two-dimensional surface is a miraculous challenge for me, but to do so with a figure who really does not exist somewhere would be an impossibility. I like to attempt to bring a much of the life of the individual to the painting or drawing as possible. A portrait is a psychological study of specific individual. An id a of universal interest can be transmitted through a portrait due to man's similarities. Many artists chose to relay their messages of universal importance through more generalized figures, as did Millet. Millet's monumental figures, usually lacking in identity, were …

The Effects Of A Kinesthetic Training Program On The Acquisition Of Industrial Skills Among University Students, John V. Mockler Jan 1979

The Effects Of A Kinesthetic Training Program On The Acquisition Of Industrial Skills Among University Students, John V. Mockler

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Training workers for specific jobs is receiving much attention in industry. The demand for skilled workers is increasing constantly and as this happens newer and more efficient methods of training are sought In the psychomotor/sensory area. skills that appear to offer a wide amount of transferability are those dealing with fine sensitivity, manual dexterity, and coordination. Even though these skills lend themselves well to training, this area is somewhat deficient in current educational and training programs (Sjogren, 1977, p.23). Presently, on-the-job training is widely used for training workers in the actual tasks they will perform during their job.

The process …

A Study To Place Determined Competencies In Priority Order As Perceived By Iowa Secondary Secretarial Education Teachers For The Purpose Of Contributing To Curriculum Development, Catherine Grady Downes Jan 1979

A Study To Place Determined Competencies In Priority Order As Perceived By Iowa Secondary Secretarial Education Teachers For The Purpose Of Contributing To Curriculum Development, Catherine Grady Downes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem of this study was to determine a priority order ranking of predetermined competencies for secretarial education teachers as perceived by Iowa secondary secretarial education teachers for the purpose of contributing to the development of teacher education curriculums. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire mailed to the school addresses of 282 secretarial teachers employed in Iowa secondary schools. The questionnaire consisted of 51 competencies within 7 classifications and one grouping of the 7 classifications of competencies. Teachers were asked to rank individual competencies in a priority order within a predetermined classification. Teachers were also asked to …

Thoughts On Philosophy And Science Curriculum, Marlow Ediger Jan 1978

Thoughts On Philosophy And Science Curriculum, Marlow Ediger

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Before making curricular decisions, science educators should study diverse schools of philosophy, explore their implications and adopt that philosophy which best meets the needs of the students and community for which the curriculum is designed. The curriculum developed should provide the understanding, skills and attitudes necessary to fulfill the philosophical goals selected. In this paper, four schools of philosophy are explored and their implications to science education are discussed. In all cases, the curriculum designed should promote the recommended principles of the psychology of teaching and learning. Each philosophy proposed assumes an active rather than passive involvement of students.
