A Study To Determine Role Conflict In The Counselor-Coach, Thomas James Keller Jan 1980

A Study To Determine Role Conflict In The Counselor-Coach, Thomas James Keller

Graduate Research Papers

A social role is defined as a pattern of expected behaviors common to everyone who holds a specific position in society; a policeman, mother, teacher, counselor, or coach (Locke and Massengale, 1978, p. 162). Hollingshead (1965), using basically the same definition, says that an occupational role is a specific activity, with a market value, which an individual can continually pursue, that supplies a steady flow of income, displays a technology of specific manual and mental operations, and produces a prestige attached to the occupation in accordance with the values of the community (p. 15). Under these two viewpoints, both counseling …

An Investigation Into The Effects Of Classroom Guidance Activities On Self-Concept And Arithmetic Achievement In Third Graders, Betty Elaine Barrick Jan 1980

An Investigation Into The Effects Of Classroom Guidance Activities On Self-Concept And Arithmetic Achievement In Third Graders, Betty Elaine Barrick

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to investigate the effect of classroom guidance activities on the self-concept and arithmetic achievement of third graders, and to determine what relationship exists between self-concept and arithmetic achievement. Effects of the treatment were examined between experimental and control groups and between boys and girls. Forty subjects participated in the study, 20 in the experimental and 20 in the control group. Initial equivalence of math instruction and of the two groups of students was established by examining Iowa Tests of Basic Skills class composites for the previous five years for classes of the two instructors, and by …

Identification Of Teacher Concerns Toward Remediation Of Dialect-Related Reading Difficulties And Instructional Techniques Employed, Yvette C. Lewis Jan 1980

Identification Of Teacher Concerns Toward Remediation Of Dialect-Related Reading Difficulties And Instructional Techniques Employed, Yvette C. Lewis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The issue of reading failure among Black children, particularly those of urban areas, has been a consistent concern among educators and parents. Reasons as to why these children do not, as a group, achieve comparably with national norms relate heavily to the style of oral language they employ. Explanations given by experts in the areas of education and linguistics are derived from two models of reading behavior postulated by Weiner and Cromer (1967), the deficit model of reading failure among Black children which attributes their difficulty to the absence of adequate Standard English language skills, and the difference model, which …

Cognitive Patterns As A Basis For The Classification Of Learning Disabled Children: A Follow-Up Study, John Michael Carr Jan 1980

Cognitive Patterns As A Basis For The Classification Of Learning Disabled Children: A Follow-Up Study, John Michael Carr

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the educational implications of subdividing learning disabled children into cognitive ability groups according to a method proposed by Richman (1979b). A set of. unstandardized discriminant function coefficients were used to weight Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) subtest scores. Richman proposed that three cognitive ability groups could then be derived from these coefficients: an Abstract Reasoning group, a Sequencing-memory group, and a General Language Disability group. Richman had developed this procedure through the investigation of a group of children who met a WISC criterion of Verbal Scale +15 ≤ Performance Scale ≥ …

A Qualitative Approach To The Emotional Adjustment To “Head Of Household” On The Current Lifestyle Of The Divorced Displaced Homemaker, Debra Ann Buchanan Jan 1980

A Qualitative Approach To The Emotional Adjustment To “Head Of Household” On The Current Lifestyle Of The Divorced Displaced Homemaker, Debra Ann Buchanan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In light of the increasing rate of divorce and families headed by females, a research study concerning the emotional adjustment of transition fromthe role of supplementary pa.rent to sole parent was undertaken. It was assumed that the divorce experience has a traumatic effect on the post-divorce lifestyle of the divorced displaced homemaker. Research focused on isolation of commonalities of emotional experience, methods of coping and adapting to new lifestyle, and the effect of divorce on the current lifestyle of four, female heads of household. Data was gathered by conducting in-depth interviews with four, divorced displaced homemakers and by observation of …

A Case Study Of Inflationary Pressures Upon A Selected Iowa School District, Dean W. Meier Jan 1980

A Case Study Of Inflationary Pressures Upon A Selected Iowa School District, Dean W. Meier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem of the study was to determine the reliability of using the Consumer Price Index (CPI) or the Gross National Product (GNP) deflator to control the budgets of Iowa schools. The study centered on how accurately either index measured the inflationary pressures on a selected Iowa district from the 1972-73 school year to the 1979-80 school year. To determine the accuracy of either index, an Education Price Index (EPI) was computed using the financial records of the Corwith-Wesley Community School District. The EPI was then compared with both the CPI and the GNP deflator. It was hypothesized that both …

A Comparison Of Formal Operational Thinking Ability With Reading Ability And Critical Thinking Ability For Tenth Grade Students, Theresa Jill Cecil Jan 1980

A Comparison Of Formal Operational Thinking Ability With Reading Ability And Critical Thinking Ability For Tenth Grade Students, Theresa Jill Cecil

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In recent years there has been a good deal of interest in Piaget's cognitive developmental theory as it relates to beginning reading and learning to read and a number of research studies have investigated the effect of cognitive stage on reading ability. Little research has been done, however, which investigate the relationships and effect of advanced levels of cognitive development upon the reading ability of adolescents and adults. The final stage of cognitive development is termed formal operational thinking in Piagetian theory and involves the ability to formulate hypotheses, reason logically and function in the abstract realm of possibility as …

The Evangelical Faith: An Initial Exploration Into The Belief System In One Congregation In Iowa, Pamela Jenkins Jan 1980

The Evangelical Faith: An Initial Exploration Into The Belief System In One Congregation In Iowa, Pamela Jenkins

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study is primarily concerned with the growing movement in Christianity labeled, loosely albeit, evangelical. The word evangelical has historically had different and changing definitions. Its meaning is traced from its origins in German pietism, Wesley Methodism and the Great Awakening to its present forms and diversifications. This historical grounding has its basis in the theory concerning and surrounding the nature of religion. However, the crux of this study was to answer the question: In what ways and for what motivation, will a person belonging to an evangelical faith combine their religious ideology and their political beliefs? This question, unfortunately …

How To Stop Killing Ourselves (Without Also Killing Debate), David Kanellis Jan 1980

How To Stop Killing Ourselves (Without Also Killing Debate), David Kanellis

Iowa Journal of Communication

So ended another typical high school debate tournament in Iowa in 1979. I was there and cannot help thinking there ought to be a better way to conduct a debate tournament. It should be possible to have all debaters on their way home from a tournament by 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, roughly 24 hours after the tournament begins. Furthermore, there should be a larger variety of judges available for the semifinal and final rounds. Ideally it should be possible for a high school debate coach to be on the panel in each of these apparently important rounds.

Philosophical Perspectives On Human Communication, Carrol C. Arnold Jan 1980

Philosophical Perspectives On Human Communication, Carrol C. Arnold

Iowa Journal of Communication

Anyone who makes assertions about the nature and significance of human communication will wittingly or unwittingly make commitments to fundamental assumptions about what it is to be a human being. If we do not pay attention to what these assumptions and commitments are, we are apt to wander into fantasy or self-contradiction or both. Dr. Hugh Blair, the Scottish man of letters, is a handy example. In the eighteenth century Blair promulgated the already popular theory that "taste" is a primary feature of all discourse. Whatever is said will reflect good, poor, or indifferent "taste." "Good taste" is the product …

Preferences And Perceptions Of The High Communication Comprehensive Student Toward Public Speaking And Interpersonal Communication, Judy C. Pearson, Donald D. Yoder Jan 1980

Preferences And Perceptions Of The High Communication Comprehensive Student Toward Public Speaking And Interpersonal Communication, Judy C. Pearson, Donald D. Yoder

Iowa Journal of Communication

Do high communication apprehensive students prefer interpersonal communication courses or public speaking courses at the basic course level? Do high communication apprehensive students perceive interpersonal communication courses or public speaking courses as more threatening? The problem of communication apprehension has received considerable attention in the literature. Recent studies have considered the causes of communication apprehension; the correlates of communication apprehension; the effects of communication apprehension on small group interaction; the effects of communication apprehension in later adult life with regard to housing and employment;4 and the manner in which high communication apprehensives are perceived by others. Very little attention, …

The Iowa Tests Of Basic Skills: Indicators Of Science Achievement, Darrel Hoff, Charles Hohensee Jan 1980

The Iowa Tests Of Basic Skills: Indicators Of Science Achievement, Darrel Hoff, Charles Hohensee

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In most public schools in Iowa, the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) are administered to grades three through eight. These tests provide a wealth of information concerning achievement in basic academic skills, but they do not provide a direct assessment of achievement of scientific skills. As a result, junior high teachers often have little data for assessing the scientific abilities of their students unless they administer additional tests. Science achievement, per se, is not usually measured in Iowa's public schools until the ninth grade, when students are given the Iowa Tests of Educational Development (ITED).

Educational Handicaps In Chemistry Students, Charles Douglass Jr. Jan 1980

Educational Handicaps In Chemistry Students, Charles Douglass Jr.

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Research has been carried out to determine which characteristics and abilities are the best predictors of success in a college level chemistry course. Much of the work has centered on achievement measures such as high school chemistry performance, SAT or ACT scores, and the like. Factors other than demonstrated aptitude and ability are also important to success. Some research has looked at the effect of cognitive styles and motivational factors in attempting to predict success. Recent studies in our department indicate that most students who do not perform well may be thought of as suffering from an educational handicap, where …

Vocational Home Economics Students’ Perceptions Of Learning Styles And Pre-Student Teaching Field Experiences, Karensue Foley Jan 1980

Vocational Home Economics Students’ Perceptions Of Learning Styles And Pre-Student Teaching Field Experiences, Karensue Foley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The main purpose was to determine if vocational home economics students' attitudes toward inductive versus didactic learning affect their perception on selected variables concerning the pre-student teaching field experiences. To complete this main purpose it was necessary to determine vocational home economics students' attitudes toward inductive versus didactic learning. The main subjects were 58 vocational home economics majors, as of Fall, 1979, at the University of Northern Iowa. They included sophomores, juniors, and seniors. All students were females. The majors must have been taking, or had taken, one or both of the field experiences in the Common Professional Sequence, a …

A Study Of The Relationships Between Measures Of Fluid And Piagetian Intelligence, James Ray Hurley Jan 1980

A Study Of The Relationships Between Measures Of Fluid And Piagetian Intelligence, James Ray Hurley

Graduate Research Papers

Francis Galton (1869) was the first to suggest the scaling of human general intelligence, distinguishing fourteen grades ranging from the most illustrious and eminent to imbeciles and idiots. He sought to show that such intelligence was mainly hereditarily determined, although he was awe.re that most brilliant individuals were reared in intellectually stimulating environments. Charles Spearman, an officer in the British Army and a man of great military tradi tion, likewise became interested in the nature of intelligence. Comparatively late in life he became a professor at the University of London, where he built a world-famous psychological research center. Spearman asked …

Characteristics Of Iowa Public School Superintendents, James R. Woltz

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the personal characteristics and experience profile of the Iowa public school superintendent that could be used to describe that individual. The method used was a survey instrument mailed to the totality, four hundred forty-seven, of the Iowa public school superintendents during the 1978-1979 school year. Four hundred twenty-six completed replies were received for a response of 95.1 percent. Data was compiled by computer and then analyzed. The findings for the 1978-1979 school year were: 1) The average age of the public school superintendent was forty-seven years; 2) Ninety-eight point two percent were …

Effects Of The Approach Path On The Displacement Of The Center Of Gravity During A Vertical Jump, Joyce Ann Davis Jan 1980

Effects Of The Approach Path On The Displacement Of The Center Of Gravity During A Vertical Jump, Joyce Ann Davis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Many sport activities require the use of the vertical jump in some manner. An approach run to a vertical jump is desirable because it enables a jumper to convert the horizontal momentum that is built up during the preliminary steps into vertical momentum for the jump. Cinematographical analysis was utilized to study what effects the approach path has on the displacement of the body's center of gravity during a vertical jump. Nine college-aged female subjects were filmed with a high speed camera while performing a vertical jump from both a curved and straight approach path. All subjects used a three …

Efficacy Of Transition Rooms: A Quantitative And Quasi-Qualitative Look, Nancie Moyer Andreasen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined some of the behavioral and academic characteristics of students who were placed in transition rooms, program philosophies and goals, behavioral and academic benefits of the transition experience, and parental reactions to the programs.

Subjects were 43 white middle-class students who were enrolled in two transition rooms in a midwestern school district during two consecutive school years. Fall and spring data from teacher ratings on the Myklebust Pupil Rating Scale (PRS) were obtained and used as indices of behavioral characteristics and progress. Spring kindergarten and transition scores on the Clymer-Barrett Prereading Battery (C-B) were collected and utilized as …
