A Study Of Afro-American Users And Non-Users Of The University Of Northern Iowa Placement Center, Harry Schuler Jan 1980

A Study Of Afro-American Users And Non-Users Of The University Of Northern Iowa Placement Center, Harry Schuler

Graduate Research Papers

The question of placement needs of minority students/or disadvantaged students and non-minority students at predominately white colleges and universities have several implications. One such implication is that placement officers are concerned with placement needs of minority and non-minority students on the campus at the same level. Another implication is that the needs for these two groups (minority and non-minority) differ, thus making the special needs of a particular group missed or unseen. The problem which evolves from this concern may be phrased as a question, "How can Placement Center officials effectively assess the differing placement needs of minority students at …

The Influence Of The Level Of Instruction And The Sex Of The Teacher On The Criticism Of Classroom Speeches, Judy C. Pearson Jan 1980

The Influence Of The Level Of Instruction And The Sex Of The Teacher On The Criticism Of Classroom Speeches, Judy C. Pearson

Iowa Journal of Communication

The criticism of classroom speeches is central to the effective teaching of speech. Communication educators recognize the importance of criticism in pedagogy, and communication research evidences the key role played by criticism. However, investigations of classroom speech criticism have generally focused on college level courses and have considered college students as subjects. Findings on the college level may or may not be transferable to the high school or elementary school classroom. In order to extend our knowledge, this investigation sought to determine differences in the critiquing behavior of high school and college-level teachers.

A Burkian Motive Analysis Of Apologia: A Critical Analysis Of Clarence Darrow In His Own Defense, Steven L. Vibbert Jan 1980

A Burkian Motive Analysis Of Apologia: A Critical Analysis Of Clarence Darrow In His Own Defense, Steven L. Vibbert

Iowa Journal of Communication

I have committed one crime. I have stood for the weak and the poor. I have stood for the men who toiled.

Such was Clarence Darrow's contention before a Los Angeles jury on August 15, 1912. Darrow, perhaps the most renowned counsel of his day, stood at both a personal and professional crossroads. One path led to vindication. The other led to personal and professional ignominy. Accused of bribery, his character questioned, his career hanging in the balance, Darrow sought to steer the jury down the road which would exonerate him and renew his mission. Darrow's self-defense before that Los …

The Effects Of Matched Versus Unmatched Counselor/Client And Advisor/Advisee Relationships, Evelyn J. Richardson Jan 1980

The Effects Of Matched Versus Unmatched Counselor/Client And Advisor/Advisee Relationships, Evelyn J. Richardson

Graduate Research Papers

For many years now, the area of counseling has been discovering, rediscovering or defining new techniques to increase counselor effectiveness. Attempts have also been made to improve the current conditions of the counselor-counselee relationships. Among these improvements has been the suggestion for matched, by subculture, relationships. The issue has not been to destroy all unmatched relationships, but to argue that if counselors must counsel clients of different cultures at a minimum, training in that particular culture should be considered.

History Of The Prison Library At The Iowa Women's Reformatory, Cathy Charleston

The purpose of this study was to present a history of the Women's State Reformatory Library at Rockwell City, Iowa. The writer investigated the history of the library between the years 1940 and 1980, but the emphasis has been focused on the relatively recent history of the library because very few records were identified prior to the 1970 1 s. Primary and secondary resources were obtained through 1) personal interviews with past and present employees, and administrative personnel associated with the library, 2) past records at the Reformatory and at the Iowa State Library, 3) periodicals newspapers, and annual reports …

Factors Related To Black Students Not Selecting Science As A Major, Denise Darcell Duncan Jan 1980

Factors Related To Black Students Not Selecting Science As A Major, Denise Darcell Duncan

Graduate Research Papers

Science is a field of study in which the proportion of blacks is drastically lower than that of the entire population (Humphries, 1976). Various studies have been conducted to investigate the characteristics associated with persons in the sciences (Flakes, 1973). There have also been recent studies of blacks in the sciences and the characteristics associated with them (Tilford, 1974). However, this research has not yet revealed why black students do not major in the fields of physical and biological science.

Self Concept And Its Relationship To Reading, Phyllis J. Demro Jan 1980

Self Concept And Its Relationship To Reading, Phyllis J. Demro

Graduate Research Papers

Self concept is a unique set of perceptions, ideas, and attitudes which mold the individual. It refers directly to the image each individual has about himself. Aspects of self concept include self, self in relation to others, self as achieving, self in school, and physical self. Self concept must be placed in its proper perspective of importance, regardless of the aspect being considered. One of the primary purposes of the teacher is to determine the nature and scope of the child's self concept and provide the necessary experiences to make that concept as useful to the student as possible. Self …

The purpose of this study was to determine if an annotated bibliography of historical fiction relating to the Civil War era could be developed. The novels to be included were to be of an interest level including grade eight and a reading level range of grades four through eleven. The researcher had predicted …

The Effects Of Anxiety On Oral Reading Miscues, Marlene Sprain Jan 1980

The Effects Of Anxiety On Oral Reading Miscues, Marlene Sprain

Graduate Research Papers

Anxiety is a condition which is hard to define even though everyone has experienced it to some degree and at one time or another. One problem involved in defining it is to determine whether it is a long- or short-term characteristic. This is an important point because if anxiety is a long-term personality trait we need to find out which persons are anxious, how they got that way, and how they are coping with the condition. If, on the other hand, anxiety is merely a temporary state, we need to determine during which situations the anxiety is aroused and how …
