Descriptive Study Of The Development Of A Support Group For Widowed Persons, Virginia Kay Boeckmann

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the paper was an exploration of the premise that a need exists in Black Hawk County for a support group for widowed persons. For this purpose, widowed person can be defined as anyone, male or female, who has lost a spouse through death. Bereavement can also be defined with sufficient precision to be useful~ that is, the state of having lost a loved one through death. As a cultural norm in our society, we tend to view the death of a close family member as a loss. In this case the loss brings with it a new …

Graduate Research Papers

This study proposes to determine if there is a significant difference in the behaviors of single-parent children and two-parent children in grades K-7 of a south-central Iowa school district in order to justify developing teacher inservice programs to deal with these behaviors in the classroom, School enrollment records were used to arrive at a random sample of 34 single-parent children in grades K-7 and a control group of 3} two-parent children in grades K-7, The study used the Walker Problem Behavior Identification Checklist to measure the specific behaviors of "Acting-Out," "Withdrawal," "Distractability," "Disturbed Peer Relations," "Immaturity," and the Total Raw …

Parental Perception Of Nursery School Education, Ömür Bozkurt Jan 1982

Parental Perception Of Nursery School Education, Ömür Bozkurt

Graduate Research Papers

Early childhood education has been a part of man's history for many years. Psychologists have pointed out that the first four or five years of a child's life is the period of most rapid growth and greatest susceptibility to environmental influences. Early childhood educators have been equally outspoken regarding the need for early childhood programs to supplement the home experience of children between the ages of three and six years. Evidence suggests that early childhood programs have positive effects on the child (Moore, 1978). Parents enroll their children into early childhood programs for different reasons such as socialization, education or …

A School Follow-Up Questionnaire As A Measure Of Post Hospital Success In Residential Treatment Of Children, Merrill L. Carruthers

Graduate Research Papers

This paper is a review of available studies and literature published over the past ten years. Its purpose is to suggest the need for elementary students, third, fourth, and fifth graders in particular, to become computer literate. It is also the intent of this paper to suggest, as an alternate to in-school computer instruction, a summer computer camp as a viable means of introducing elementary students to microcomputers, their uses, and how to program in BASIC. The literature was reviewed to find 1. a common definition for the term "computer literacy" , 2. the need for an elementary school computer …

A School Follow-Up Questionnaire As A Measure Of Post Hospital Success In Residential Treatment Of Children, John W. Carroll

Graduate Research Papers

Throughout the history of education in the United States, the American Public has attempted to meet the needs of all students. This has become more evident through the most recent legislation and programming for students with special needs. The passage of Public Law 94:142 and similar state laws have directed education to meet the needs of all students. This includes students who had previously been overlooked and were not receiving the special education they needed and deserved.

A Study Of The Teaching Of Literature And The Place Of The Literature Of Iowa In The Secondary English Curriculum, Carol B. Mcmullen Jan 1982

A Study Of The Teaching Of Literature And The Place Of The Literature Of Iowa In The Secondary English Curriculum, Carol B. Mcmullen

Graduate Research Papers

To a teacher of English in an Iowa high school, it is amazing to find the literature of Iowa is not included in the English curriculum. Anthologies may include a short story by Hamlin Garland or one by Ruth Suckow, but often students are unaware these are Iowa authors. Even the history of Iowa is mandated in the Iowa curriculum. The omission of Iowa literature is disturbing, especially when a wide variety of other literary works are used.

The Influence Of Spelling Instruction Of Basal Vocabulary Words On The Comprehension Performances Of Third Graders, Dawn M. Williams Jan 1982

The Influence Of Spelling Instruction Of Basal Vocabulary Words On The Comprehension Performances Of Third Graders, Dawn M. Williams

Graduate Research Papers

Two successive intact third grade classes were involved in a study to test the hypothesis: If spelling instruction is coordinated with the basal reader by teaching the spelling of the basal vocabulary words, then reading comprehension performance will be greater than when an uncoordinated spelling-reading program is used. To determine comparability, the control and experimental groups were analyzed using the Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test and the reading subtest of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills resulting in no significant differences between groups concerning IQ and prior reading achievement. The control group used Spelling: Words and Skills for its uncoordinated spelling-reading …

Media And Youth: The Potential Influence Of Television On The Behavior Of Children, Sandra Marie Brown Jan 1982

Media And Youth: The Potential Influence Of Television On The Behavior Of Children, Sandra Marie Brown

Graduate Research Papers

Television is, indeed, an extraordinary medium on which almost anything can be revealed or portrayed. It can capture such events as the launching of a space ship or satellite into outer space, or the attempted assassination of a world leader in such a manner as to make the viewer feel likes/he is actually at the site of the event. With all this glory and recognition at its disposal, is it any wonder that television is such a popular medium? Nevertheless, despite its popularity, television can be detrimental to the emotional well-being of certain human beings, the children of our societies.

The Relationship Between Quadriceps Strength And Aerobic Capacity At Various Pedaling Frequencies On A Bicycle Ergometer In College Age Males, Connie Marie Brossart

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The possibility that quadriceps strength is a limiting factor when performing maximal oxygen consumption tests on a bicycle ergometer has been introduced in previous studies. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between quadriceps strength at varying speeds of muscle contraction and aerobic capacity measured at high and low pedaling frequencies on a bicycle ergometer. Subjects were nineteen college-age males, nine of whom were competitive cyclists and ten of whom were untrained cyclists. Each subject performed two maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) tests on a Monark bicycle ergometer. One test was at a pedaling frequency of 60 rpm …

The chief purpose of this research was to examine the efficacy of employing the Rorschach Inkblot Test as a supplement to the material currently used in the diagnosis of potentially LD children. An examination was made of the case histories of 1D boys who had received services from the Educational Clinic, University of Northern Iowa. Cumulative file data for Non-LD boys were gathered for comparative purposes. Subjects were matched according to age, IQ, and social-economic …

Archetypes And The Large Organization: A Comparison Of Family And Management Roles, Ann Lowry Goodell Jan 1982

Archetypes And The Large Organization: A Comparison Of Family And Management Roles, Ann Lowry Goodell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Economic realities, divorce, and the feminist movement have forced or encouraged women to retain their ties with the labor force. Unfortunately, these ties have been strained by accusations of incompetence, negative attitudes concerning affirmative action policies and concern over role conflicts. The issue which emerges is an issue concerning the role performances of women: are women competent in the labor force? Are women more subject to and influenced by role conflict than men? Are women's performances being accurately perceived by their superiors, colleagues, and subordinates? Before any of the questions can be addressed, an in depth analysis of the roles …

Public Acceptability Of Psychotherapy: The Effects Of Sex, Psychotherapeutic Orientation And Mode Of Presentation, Mark A. Etscheidt Jan 1982

Public Acceptability Of Psychotherapy: The Effects Of Sex, Psychotherapeutic Orientation And Mode Of Presentation, Mark A. Etscheidt

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the public acceptability of psychotherapy. Three major models of psychotherapy were examined: behavior therapy, psychodynamic insight-oriented therapy, and client-centered therapy. The mode of presentation was manipulated based on previous acceptability research which has employed diverse types of stimulus materials. Written, audiotaped, and videotaped dialogues between a client and a therapist were used in this study. The sex of the subject was also of interest in this study. It was hypothesized: (1) that based on previous research, client-centered therapy would be perceived less favorably than either behavior therapy or psychodynamic therapy, (2) that …

Communication Rules And Negotiation Strategies: A Case Study, Ruth A. Brenner Hunt Jan 1982

Communication Rules And Negotiation Strategies: A Case Study, Ruth A. Brenner Hunt

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This case study examined negotiation tactics and strategies by challenging the theoretical basis for and actual use of William Donahue's negotiation interaction coding system. Three subproblems investigated the coding categories' construct validity, the negotiators' coordination and co-orientation, and their constitutive and regulative rules.

The method involved naturalistic observation in a quasi-experimental simulation of a civil suit, out-of-court proceeding. Twenty subjects role-played as attorneys for the plaintiff and defendant. Five pairs were students in a college course on negotiation, and five pairs were professionals whose work required bargaining skills.

The negotiators were given hypothetical case "facts" and encouraged to role play …

The Effects Of Two Color Conditions On Muscular Strength In Trained And Untrained College Males And Females, Mary Jane Asimus

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of three color conditions on handgrip strength and shoulder abduction strength in trained and untrained college males and females. It has been suggested that differences in electromagnetic properities [sic] under exposure to visual stimuli (color) may affect muscular strength throughout the body. Subjects consisted of forty male and forty female volunteers from the University of Northern Iowa. Six different treatments were administered to all subjects. Maximal strength exertion under all conditions (normal, blue and pink) was measured with a cable tensiometer. Statistical analysis revealed significant main effects on the SEX …

Interpretation Of English Intonation And Stress Patterns Reproduced By Vietnamese Speakers, Jolene Gear

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study examines native English speakers' perception of English sentences reproduced by Vietnamese speakers. The work is based on the question of whether Vietnamese speakers who use tone to make lexical distinctions in their own language can reproduce syntactical and lexical distinctions in English and if native English speakers can judge these distinction so Previous experiments done on intonation, stress and tone are discussed, followed by an examination of similarities and differences between Vietnamese and English prosody. The present experiment consisted of these steps: Pilot studies were conducted to determine which sentences of contrastive intonation and stress were to …

A Comparison Of Piagetian And Psychometric Measures Of Intelligence, Kathryn Ann Berntson Jan 1982

A Comparison Of Piagetian And Psychometric Measures Of Intelligence, Kathryn Ann Berntson

Graduate Research Papers

The ideas of Jean Piaget have sooner or later been applied to practically every aspect of education. These ideas are based on Piaget's theory that every individual progresses through four cognitive developmental stages: the sensorimotor stage, the preoperational stage, the concrete operational stage, and the formal operational stage. According to Piaget, during these stages an individual progresses from reflex reactions to the environment to the point, if and when he reaches the level of formal operations, he can think abstractly and test hypotheses.

The Effect Of Mood Induction On The Creativity Of First-Grade Students, Rita Ann Jensen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of mood induction on the creativity of first‑grade students. It examined whether students who reported being in a happy mood scored higher on measures of creative ability than students who reported being in a sad mood. Two hypotheses related to mood’s effect on creativity were tested. Hypothesis 1: There is no difference between the pretest figural creativity scores and posttest figural creativity scores of first‑grade students exposed to happy mood induction and those exposed to sad mood induction. Hypothesis 2: There is no difference between the pretest verbal creativity scores and posttest …

Interpretive Levels And Connections In Margaret Drabble’S The Middle Ground, Earlene Hamel Hawley Jan 1982

Interpretive Levels And Connections In Margaret Drabble’S The Middle Ground, Earlene Hamel Hawley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis focuses on contemporary British writer Margaret Drabble's ninth and most recent novel, The Middle Ground, as novel and as metaphor. "The middle ground" is a metaphor for the British middle class, about whom Drabble mostly writes; for middle age, which she herself is entering, along with Kate Armstrong, protagonist of the novel; and for the style and stage of Drabble's own career. But, the "middle ground" is an equally apt, if less obvious, metaphor for the narrative which provides the nearly plotless story of The Middle Ground, the area of human relationships, mostly circling Kate. The middle ground …
