The Single-Parent Father In Contemporary Society, Mary E. Crawford Jan 1981

The Single-Parent Father In Contemporary Society, Mary E. Crawford

Graduate Research Papers

The word "love" is perhaps the most widely used and abused term in the English language. We love our parents. We love our brothers and sisters. We love our pet and fruit, vegetables and meat, our home, and our car or truck. We love our country and flag. We love, both animate and inanimate objects. Human beings, today and throughout history, have had the need to love and to be loved. The search of finding or simply recognizing this love, first of all, and then giving and receiving love, is often a frightening experience. There also seems to be a …

Relationship Between Size Of School And Least Preferred Coworker Score For Elementary School Principals, Stephen Carter Foster Jan 1981

Relationship Between Size Of School And Least Preferred Coworker Score For Elementary School Principals, Stephen Carter Foster

Graduate Research Papers

In the complicated, subjective field of leadership, school administration ranks as one of the least well understood areas on the scale. Business, with their billions have been able to spend the money and the time examining leadership in the business environment and have established considerable data which, because of the lack of money and time in education, must be translated to our field before analysis. This translation occasionally diminishes the value of the results obtained from the research. For this reason, it is of major importance that educators adjust and apply some of the ideas developed in business to educational …

The purpose of this part of the research will be to look for patterns of characteristics that are repeated in the sample. The second part of the research will deal with the attitudes of the sample group toward their school administration and their reasons for seeking the office of association president. 1 A general statement of the intent of this paper would be: to develop a profile of …

Family Crisis Intervention With An Adolescent At Risk Of Suicide: A Study Of The Family Crisis Intervention Unit Of Polk County, Iowa, Michael Perry Bleadorn

Graduate Research Papers

Suicide: the act of killing one's self intentionally. The word reaches out and grabs every one of us who reads or hears it. It is a word which is at the very heart of our innermost fears. Suicide is an action which has been romantically praised in western culture by William Shakespeare in "Romeo and Juliet." It has been glorified in the eastern culture through the ritual of Hari-kiri and also in the kamakazi mission of death. "Suicide, which once ranked twenty-second on the list of causes of death in the United States, now rates tenth, and in some states …

College Student Environment Interaction With Special Reference To Some Residence Hall Student Weekend Activities - During The Spring Semester Of 1981, Jeffrey Alan Anderson

Graduate Research Papers

In the past two decades considerable effort has focused on the degree to which college environments exert important impacts on students' values, attitudes, and behaviors. However, since college and university environments are so rich and multi-dimensional, it may be more appropriate to center attention on the subenvironments. The college residence hall is one such subenvironment which has received considerable attention during the past decade.

The Effectiveness Of The Group Counseling Approach To Working With Vocational Problems, Gene Ross Thomas

Graduate Research Papers

Group counseling is a social experience designed to deal with the developmental problems and attitudes of individuals in a secure setting. It facilitates the development of new human relations skills and leads to the discovery of new and more acceptable ways of approaching various conflict situations. The interaction of the group can also produce a greater self-acceptance, deeper self-understanding, and an improved self-concept. There has recently been a marked increase in the use of group counseling procedures to tackle various problem areas. This has resulted in the development of some interesting and innovative techniques, as well as some that are …

Counselor's Responsibilities And Student's Needs At The Junior High School Level, Ken H. Winter Jan 1981

Counselor's Responsibilities And Student's Needs At The Junior High School Level, Ken H. Winter

Graduate Research Papers

In the past decade, the necessity for a junior high school counselor seems to have increased more than ever before. Formerly, the child's needs were handled by the teacher through homeroom and classroom guidance programs (Baughman, 1974; Grambs, et. al., 1961). Gradually, socioeconomic forces of the past decades have encouraged a full time specialist, or the equivalent, available in guidance and testing for every 250 to 300 pupils in a junior high school (7th and 8th grades) (Conant, 1960; Tink, 1963).

A Comparative Study Of Inquiry Into The Personal Qualities Desirable For An Elementary Principal, Clayton Earl Naylor Jan 1981

A Comparative Study Of Inquiry Into The Personal Qualities Desirable For An Elementary Principal, Clayton Earl Naylor

Graduate Research Papers

Society has changed, schools have changed, students have changed, how about principals? Are superintendents looking for qualities in a principal that keep up with the times or are they looking for the same basic personal qualities they looked for in 1956? Much has been written of the changing roles of today's administrators. There is also some theoretical evidence that indicates a correlation between personality and leadership ability. There is much evidence that personal qualities are a definite factor in administrative selection criterion. What, then, are the specific personal qualities superintendents deem desirable for an elementary principal to possess today? How …

Learning Experiences In Nonverbal Communication, Russel M. Myers

Iowa Journal of Communication

Designing learning experiences for the high school student in the area of nonverbal communication can very often be a frustrating experience for the classroom teacher. The primary task is to design an experience which will raise the consciousness of the student in such a way as to make the information integral to the everyday environment of the student. The following experiences have been found to be highly effective in attaining knowledge in the use of nonverbal communication. These experiences may be used either as a concentrated unit or spread out over a longer period of time depending on the needs …

Correlation Of Church Attendance Of Some University Of Northern Iowa's Students With Parental Influence, Patricia G. Boyer

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between church attendance of some of the University of Northern Iowa's students and parental influence. An attempt is being made to look for an association between these two variables. If church attendance and parental influence are related, it is interesting to speculate how these factors are related to the authoritarian churches which are then associated with rebelling or conforming.

The Effect Of Student Feedback On The Improvement Of Instruction, Douglas M. Trank Jan 1981

The Effect Of Student Feedback On The Improvement Of Instruction, Douglas M. Trank

Iowa Journal of Communication

The use of student evaluation of faculty is commonplace in post-secondary speech communication programs across the country. Although research on rating scales for such evaluation has been a topic of concern in educational journals for over fifty years, communication journals have generally avoided such discussions until the early part of this decade. Wolff reported in 1974 that 90.5 per cent of the speech departments surveyed conducted such evaluations and all but one of the remaining respondents had plans to use them in the near future. While we, as a discipline, have not been actively involved in the research surrounding student …
