A Study Of Selected Aspects Of The Social Studies Curriculum In American Secondary Schools, James Ching-Bin Chang Jan 1982

A Study Of Selected Aspects Of The Social Studies Curriculum In American Secondary Schools, James Ching-Bin Chang

Graduate Research Papers

The social studies has been changing during the last twenty years. Until the 1970's, more than 100 major social studies curriculum projects were financed by the U. S. federal government, ·foundations, and institutions of higher learning. However, there was little agreement on which concepts or ways of working in the social sciences were most fruitful and representative of accepted structure.

Women In Science: A Developing Country, Doris Simonis Jan 1982

Women In Science: A Developing Country, Doris Simonis

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Because teenaged girls generally avoid classes in physical sciences and advanced mathematics, they reduce their career options. Even highly talented young women do not pursue science in numbers proportionate to their share of the college student population.

One way of examining this problem of underrepresentation is to recognize that women have been effectively isolated from the kinds of encouragement, feedback and experiences that their brothers have had in family, educational, social and occupational situations. Independence in thought and action rarely wins praise for a girl, and mechanical as well as intellectual attainments are likely to get approval only if they …

A Comparative Study Of Freshmen Entering The University Of Northern Iowa In The Fall 1975 Who Received A First Semester Grade Point Average Below 2.00 And Who Completed A Baccalaureate Degree By Summer 1981, Margaret Rolfe

Graduate Research Papers

For the past decade educators in institutions of higher learning have begun to open their doors to a diverse population of students and to design programs that would help them to best "fit" into the college environmental milieu. This diverse student group has brought along with it a multitude of values, cultures, needs and interests that have been totally different from those of the traditional middle-class college-going population. These two groups differ in terms of academic abilities, educational aspirations, career goals, and usually grade point averages. This is not always the case, but oftentimes some students form the diverse population …

The Social Behavior Of Undergraduate Music Majors - Are They Socially Different?, Dawn Michelle White Jan 1982

The Social Behavior Of Undergraduate Music Majors - Are They Socially Different?, Dawn Michelle White

Graduate Research Papers

This study will examine two concerns relating to the social patterns of undergraduate music majors at the University of Northern Iowa. The first concern is whether or not undergraduate music majors have different patterns of social interaction and behavior when compared to their non-music major counterparts. In this, the researcher is interested in the truthfulness of many stereotypes that have been placed upon undergraduate music majors by their peers in terms of their so called "unusual" day-to-day activities. Are they quite different at the University of Northern Iowa? The second concern is interested in the inward feeling expressed by music …

Career Planning Programs And Processes For Undergraduate Students, Marilyn C. Hawkins Jan 1982

Career Planning Programs And Processes For Undergraduate Students, Marilyn C. Hawkins

Graduate Research Papers

College students, traditional or non-traditional, experience a state of development in which they are searching to discover themselves. Chickering (1969) assumes that they are searching to discover what he has labeled the seven developmental vectors. They are: achieving competency, managing emotions, becoming autonomous, establishing identity, freeing of interpersonal relations, clarifying purposes and developing integrity. The student may face difficulty in adjusting to these developments because of peer and family pressures and because of the need to maintain a stable academic life. To ease the transition period, they are in need of understanding and mature role models. These role models should …

Counseling Needs Of Police Officers, Gehrig K. La Velle Jan 1982

Counseling Needs Of Police Officers, Gehrig K. La Velle

Graduate Research Papers

For many years business and industries have been slow to identify and provide for many needs of workers. Because of union movements in the last fifty years, the worker has achieved a variety of benefits: increased wages, comprehensive medical care, retirement programs, etc. The evolution of mental health coverage has grown from worker pressures to simple economics. A healthy worker is a productive worker and a productive worker increases corporate profit.

A Comparative Study Of The Involvement Of Dropouts And Graduates In High School Activities, Randall Charles Nichols

Graduate Research Papers

In recent years, schools have been faced with an increasingly burdensome .financial strain as prices for fuel and supplies climb, maintenance costs grow, teacher associations demand better salaries and benefits for their members, and governmental regulations multiply. These .increased costs, combined with decreasing income due to declining enrollments, have severely pinched public schools' ability to continue to provide current programs. On top of this, schools confront a depressed economy and taxpayer cries for economic accountability. Schools find themselves increasingly forced to consider the possibility of eliminating programs.

The Effects Of Active Listening And Feedback On The Communication Relationship, Paul J. Kaufmann, Rebecca A. Lensch Jan 1982

The Effects Of Active Listening And Feedback On The Communication Relationship, Paul J. Kaufmann, Rebecca A. Lensch

Iowa Journal of Communication

The relationship two people establish as a result of their conversation is affected by the relational perceptions as well as the content exchange. Various schools of counseling, therapy, and communication agree that this relationship correlates with the effectiveness of the communication.

In a review of the research from the counseling and therapeutic perspective, Gardner writes: The evidence that the quality of a therapeutic relationship is a correlate of therapeutic change [therefore effective] lies not in the conclusive results of any one study, but rather in the repeated findings of a series of studies.

Since a satisfying relationship is central to …

Listening Bibliography, Lawrence Bernabo, John Mckiernan

Iowa Journal of Communication

The items in this bibliography were selected from three main sources: the Current Index of Journals in Education, Books in Print, and the University of Iowa library catalogue. Seeking to serve teachers and administrators at a wide variety of educational levels, we have sought to focus on items of primary interest for mainstream education in communication skills. We generally excluded items which dealt primarily with foreign languages, music, and the special techniques developed to teach handicapped students. We also sought to exclude the most technical articles. Finding that there still were too many items, we selected the most current books …

Inservice Preferences Of Local Education Association Ipd Chairpersons And High School Principals Of Northeast Iowa, Craig Alan Gingrich

Graduate Research Papers

The success of our educational system today depends upon many factors, including recruitment of quality individuals into the profession, good preservice training, and the provision of adequate funds to support research, programs, facilities, and salaries. Teacher Inservice Education (TISE) is crucial because knowledge, society, and teachers are all subject to continuous change. "Teachers can not be prepared in one, two, three, or four years (Lord James 1972, p. 107)."

Nature And Effect Of Bilingual Education Programs On Second Language Acquisition, Mark David Finanger Jan 1982

Nature And Effect Of Bilingual Education Programs On Second Language Acquisition, Mark David Finanger

Graduate Research Papers

Bilingual programs, a newcomer to public education, are struggling against the hardships which accompany stages of infancy. Historically, bilingualism has been attempted in American schools since the eighteenth century when early immigrants organized schools to educate their children. Even today, public school classrooms contain children from other countries speaking different languages, representing different cultures. An education which enhances this bilingual atmosphere seems appropriate to fulfill the needs of non-English-speaking children. However, bilingual education in America is being denied the attention it deserves; consequently, the bilingual education effort to implement successful programs is accompanied by numerous problems.

A Correlational Study Between Piagetian Concrete Reasoning Level And Academic Achievement, Mark Anthony Randall Jan 1982

A Correlational Study Between Piagetian Concrete Reasoning Level And Academic Achievement, Mark Anthony Randall

Graduate Research Papers

Jean Piaget has been identified as one of the great contributors to knowledge in our time. Robinson (1952) lists him in his book, 100 Most Important People in the World Today. During his life he developed the learning theories of genetic epistemology that brought him recognition as the father of modern child psychology. During countless hours of observations performed by him personally, he developed clinical interviewing techniques to reveal the cognitive developmental level of a child. Similarly, all educators are concerned with cognitive development of the learner. The Piagetian clinical interviews glean information on the subject ability to process information …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Materials For A Secondary Level Geometry Course, Andrea Seversen Jan 1982

An Annotated Bibliography Of Materials For A Secondary Level Geometry Course, Andrea Seversen

Graduate Research Papers

The contention is made that high school students experience frustrations in their pursuit of learning Euclidean geometry. Three causes of frustration are assumed: inadequate comprehension of new concepts; lack of a sense of need or usefulness of concepts presented; a lack of initial or sustaining interest in the subject. A further presumption is made that appropriate utilization of multimedia in the study of geometry will alleviate some of these frustrations.

In light of these assumptions and with substantial support for them in literature reviewed, an annotated bibliography of multimedia intended for incorporation into the study of Euclidean geometry and directed …

A Review Of The Literature On Peer Counseling Programs, Claude Bartley Snead Iii Jan 1982

A Review Of The Literature On Peer Counseling Programs, Claude Bartley Snead Iii

Graduate Research Papers

The field of counseling has rapidly expanded during the past two decades while seeking more effective and more efficient means of helping people meet individual and collective needs. Concurrently, American society has witnessed an intense increase in personal and social problems. Educational institutions have been plagued with acts of disruption and violence. The family system has been jolted by an unprecedented rise in the divorce rate which was recently projected at a ratio of one divorce for each two marriages (U. S. Dept. of Justice, 1975). The emotional well-being of the citizenry has often been questioned in light of the …

Brain Growth: Intuitive And Scientific, Karen Marie Patterson Jan 1982

Brain Growth: Intuitive And Scientific, Karen Marie Patterson

Graduate Research Papers

Developmental processes of the brain have long been considered the last frontier by scientists as well as educators. There has been much speculation concerning how and when the mind grows and if intellectual growth appears at the same time the skull and brain are physiologically and neurologically growing. Prior to recent research many educators assumed that learning, or intellectual advancement, occurred in an almost continuous manner. Educators felt children built skill upon skill and constantly moved from one stage of cognitive development to the next higher level of cognitive development. Traditionally, educational systems have been based on this concept of …

Nonprofessionals or aides in the media centers are an important part of an effective educational media program. They are essential as support staff to strengthen and complement the services that can be provided.

This study was conducted to determine (1) what tasks are media nonprofessionals performing? (2) what tasks , if any, are media nonprofessionals performing which are usually considered to be tasks which are the responsibility of certificated media professionals and (3) how many, if any, appear to be supervising and instructing students without themselves being supervised by a media professional?

A questionnaire was sent to the media center …

A Measurement Of Improved Self-Esteem In Third Grade Students With Elementary Counselor Intervention, Ann Margaret Jamason Jan 1982

A Measurement Of Improved Self-Esteem In Third Grade Students With Elementary Counselor Intervention, Ann Margaret Jamason

Graduate Research Papers

In recent years, school counselors have become an important and essential part of the educational team. As educators become more aware of the needs of individual children, educators have worked more closely with school counselors in both identifying the problems of individual children and developing programs to help individual children. At the elementary level, counselors have been working in the affective domain of children's lives to emphasize the importance of communication (Getz, Morrill, 1978). By developing skills in communication, counselors have learned the concerns that children have about themselves. Realizing that children begin to develop their self-esteem at an early …

A Study Of The Consequences Of High School Athletic Participation, Mark Myers Hendrickson

Graduate Research Papers

Sports participation within the total American educational system holds a unique position when compared to the rest of the world: Most countries in the world sponsor sports either completely apart from educational institutions, or else sponsor organized sports that display weak structural alignments with their school so Athletics in America are taught, sponsored, sanctioned, and administered by selected representatives of the American educational system. Sports in American culture, using school as a vehicle, continue to reach all levels of contemporary society. l Interscholastic sports competition for males has long been an integral part of contemporary American educational systems. The Role Of The School Counselor In Helping Chronically Ill Students, Nancy Camp Warren Jan 1982

The Role Of The School Counselor In Helping Chronically Ill Students, Nancy Camp Warren

Graduate Research Papers

Statistics kept since the passage of the National Cancer Act in 1971 indicate that slow but significant gains in lengthening the life span among many cancer patients have been made. The five-year survival rate for seven of the fourteen cancers in children and adolescents including all leukemias, Wilm's tumor, Hodgkin's disease, and neuroblastomas has increased dramatically. Dr. Edward Beattie Jr., Director of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York City, estimates that half of all cancer patients could now be cured, meaning to live their lives without a recurrence of their cancer, if all the available diagnostic and treatment techniques were …

Blind Clients Perceptions Of Sighted Counselor's Empathy In The Counseling Relationships, Mae Porter Jan 1982

Blind Clients Perceptions Of Sighted Counselor's Empathy In The Counseling Relationships, Mae Porter

Graduate Research Papers

The research paper was designed to study the ability of sighted counselors to counsel blind clients with empathy. While blindness should not pose a difficulty, many sighted counselors do have difficulties working with blind clients. Based on the research done for the study, this problem occurs mainly because of their difficulties in distinguishing empathy from sympathy. A major problem is the counselor's understanding of his/her own feelings about the blind client. Many counselors cannot get beyond the label "blind" and view the total person, not simply the handicap.
