Abstract Paintings: A Presentation Of Visual Essence, Kimble A. Bromley Jan 1983

Abstract Paintings: A Presentation Of Visual Essence, Kimble A. Bromley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

My thesis has consisted of searching out the visual essence of the representational world and presenting it in abstract paintings. When I began my thesis, I had been painting in a representational mode and found that I was drawn to certain components of interior and exterior environments that excited me: geometrical structure, space, color, light, and mood. My work became more abstract because I made a decision to leave out extraneous detail and focused in on these important visual elements. I felt that painting this way freed me to concentrate on and communicate to the viewer, what was most important …

Factors Contributing To The Preponderance Of Males In Learning Disabilities: A Follow-Up Study, Julie Carol Olson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study was designed to assess the utility of specific variables for differentiating LO males and LO females and LO students from RE students. Variables were selected based on previous research findings indicating their utility for differentiating the relevant samples and the availability of pertinent data in existing files. Data regarding the 21 pre-selected variables were obtained for all LO students (50 males and 30 females) and a control group of RE students matched with them by sex, grade, and age. Discriminant Analysis procedures were used to determine the intercorrelated grouping of variables which best differentiated sex within LO …

Influence Of Cardiovascular Condition Of Women On Perceived Exertion During Submaximal Workloads, David William Bacharach Jan 1983

Influence Of Cardiovascular Condition Of Women On Perceived Exertion During Submaximal Workloads, David William Bacharach

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Perceived exertion has been identified as the subjective estimation of the work intensity (Morgan, 1973). With an increase in popularity of exercise, an awareness for safety is necessary. A scale presented by Borg (1962) was designed to help quantify a person's perception of work. This scale was later revised to improve its accuracy as a tool for perceiving effort. The intent of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceived exertion and excerise [sic] in women. The purpose of this study was to determine if the cardiovascular condition of college age women affects their ability to perceive efforts of …

The Effects Of Locus Of Control And Agent Delivering Reinforcement On Performance Rates Of Junior High Emotionally Disabled Students, Mary Jean Blaisdell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A single subject treatment comparison study was made with 2 junior high boys in a classroom for the emotionally disabled to determine the effects of their perceived locus of control on their response to different agents of reinforcement. Out of 7 students from a middle class background, the most internally and externally oriented students were chosen. Student orientation was determined by the results of the Modified Intellectual Achievement Responsibility Questionnaire, an instrument designed to assess the degree to which students perceive themselves to be responsible for the events in their lives. The study consisted of data collection under teacher reinforcement, …

A Test Of Max Weber’S Theory Of Charismatic Leadership In A Third World Case: Cuba’S Fidel Castro, Leida Javier-Vivoni Jan 1983

A Test Of Max Weber’S Theory Of Charismatic Leadership In A Third World Case: Cuba’S Fidel Castro, Leida Javier-Vivoni

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In this thesis a limited test of Max Weber's theory of charisma was conducted by applying it to the case of a Third World leader, that of Fidel Castro. This was achieved by reviewing and analyzing Weber's original formulation, the various interpretations of it that followed, and the different ways Weber's theory has been reconstructed for the purpose of guiding research on charisma. Ralph Hummel's (1972) and Richard Fagen's (1965) separate sets of propositions, based on reconstructions of different parts of Weber's theory, were chosen to guide the research on Castro's case. The interpretive data generated by this process constituted …

Attitudes Of Secondary Teachers Toward Mainstreaming Mildly Educationally Handicapped Students, Joan D. Barringer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

With the enactment of Public Law 94-142, the Education For All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, while most educators have been influenced by the requirement to meet the needs of youngsters in the "least restrictive environment," onus of responsibility generally filters down to the classroom teachers. It was the purpose of this study to determine just what are the attitudes of secondary teachers toward integrating the mildly educationally handicapped student into the regular class. The primary question was whether exposure to the concept of mainstreaming positively influences attitudes.

The investigation involved 501 secondary teachers selected by a stratified random sampling …

Communication Competence And Varying Communication Experiences, Mark Redmond Jan 1983

Communication Competence And Varying Communication Experiences, Mark Redmond

Iowa Journal of Communication

Communication competence is becoming a topic of increased interest. Much of this interest stems from a desire to delineate those skills that should be emphasized in speech communication education of children that will benefit them the most. The constellation of skills is often lumped into the category called communication competence. This interest is justified when one considers the importance that communication is playing in today's society. The United States is known as a melting pot of cultures, and it is likely that the average American will meet and interact with a variety of people. The greater the likelihood of having …

A Comparative Study Of Selected Behaviors Of Children From Divorced/Separated And Intact Families In The Parochial School System, Elaine Delaney

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to determine if there is a significant difference in selected behaviors of children from divorced/separated families in the parochial school system as compared with children of intact families within the same school system. The relationship was examined by taking into consideration the child's self evaluation of his/her home, school, and peer relationships and teacher's evaluation of school related behavior. Four parochial elementary schools with relatively equal economic status were selected from the metropolitan area of a large mid-western city. Subjects included four hundred eighty-three fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students and their respective homeroom teachers. Sixty-three …

Subjects included 113 white middle class children from four …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Intelligence And Creativity, Jill L. Weig Jan 1983

A Study Of The Relationship Between Intelligence And Creativity, Jill L. Weig

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present research study was twofold. The first purpose was to determine the relationship between creativity and intelligence when intelligence was assessed by a group test (CAT-V) and an individual test (WISC-Rt V). The second purpose was to examine the threshold hypothesis, which states that below a critical IQ level, usually 120, the two constructs appear to be positively and moderately related. Above this level, the correlation between the two constructs lessens. Theoretical and statistical foundations regarding the relationship between the two constructs were addressed. The theoretical model addressed divergent/convergent thinking properties. Creativity was considered a, divergent …
