The measure of achievement was the Iowa Test-of Basic Skills Composite score. Predictive validity studies have the potential of identifying early - those students who will fail or experience academic difficulties. Accurate predictions of later academic achievement are of paramount importance to determine what areas in kindergarten are necessary to successfully achieve academically. Several researchers were reviewed and cited regarding their findings in the …

Potential Differences In Self-Concept Among Adult Children Of Problem Drinkers, Thomine Sue Wilson Jan 1987

Potential Differences In Self-Concept Among Adult Children Of Problem Drinkers, Thomine Sue Wilson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Prior research has Indicated that the alcoholic home environment is destructive to a child's emotional well-being* and that the conditions necessary to the development of high self-esteem are not consistently present, A large segment of previous research about children of alcoholics has not been tested with rigorous research techniques and often reflects the product of personal observations* results of extensive interviews* or case studies while working with these children. Moreover* there has been a tendency to focus on clinical populations of the young and adolescent offspring of alcoholics, with few studies being conducted in which adults were used as subjects. …

A Historical Analysis Of The Characteristics Of The Effective School Administrator, Ali Salih Khamis Jan 1986

A Historical Analysis Of The Characteristics Of The Effective School Administrator, Ali Salih Khamis

Graduate Research Papers

Technology is constantly changing society as well as having a great influence on schools and education. Therefore the development of school leaders is needed to assist education in these changes. It is not easy to determine the procedures for selecting effective school administrators. In recent years there has been tremendous emphasis on improving those procedures including the adoption of psychological tests and "team ratings". The problem is how to choose those persons who possess the essential characteristics to be potential effective school administrators. There is no clear cut way for individuals interviewing candidates to select those best qualified to lead …

Psychotropic Drugs As Impediments To Effective Counseling, Lois Jeanne Mayne Jan 1986

Psychotropic Drugs As Impediments To Effective Counseling, Lois Jeanne Mayne

Graduate Research Papers

While psychotropic drugs have proven useful in the treatment of a variety of psychological and behavioral disturbances, they simultaneously hinder the counseling process (Matorin and DeChillo 1984). There are so many possible drug side effects that it is increasingly difficult for a counselor to record accurate case notes on a client who is exhibiting drug induced psychological or medical conditions. Matorin and DeChillo (1984) recommended that the professional counselor, the attending physician and the client, if possible, meet to discuss the potential drug side effects thus assuring that the overall functioning of the client is taken into account. When assessing …

Programs For Improving The Academic Achievement Of The Marginal Student, David Joel Ziesmer Jan 1986

Programs For Improving The Academic Achievement Of The Marginal Student, David Joel Ziesmer

Graduate Research Papers

Education in America derives from a society that honors success, competition, and achievement. With these components being emphasized in schools there is an unavoidable consequence. 3 A group of students will see themselves or be perceived by others, as losers (Wehlage, 1983). The secondary educational system refers to these students as underachievers, non-achievers, disadvantaged, undermotivated, disaffected, school-alienated, at-risk for failure, and marginal.

The Nature Of Science As A Model For Teaching For Conceptualization, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1986

The Nature Of Science As A Model For Teaching For Conceptualization, Robert W. Hanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Many teachers of methods courses for future secondary science teachers probably share my observation that high marks in conventional college science courses do not always indicate a good grasp of how science has developed as a human enterprise. In spite of efforts of curriculum developers and vast expenditures of public funds to improve science teaching in our secondary schools, the typical science background of a beginning teacher consists of a body of content with traditional disciplinary boundaries created by departments that view science in terms of their own specialized subject matter. Little emphasis is given to a broad view of …

A Review Of Selected Neurochemical And Cognitive Hypotheses Of Depression, Kenneth Edward Klingman Jan 1986

A Review Of Selected Neurochemical And Cognitive Hypotheses Of Depression, Kenneth Edward Klingman

Graduate Research Papers

According to the American Psychiatric Association (1980), the characteristic traits of depression are quite well established. Symptoms include dysphoric mood, insomnia, psychomotor agitation or retardation, loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities, loss of energy and fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, diminished ability to think or concentrate, and thoughts of death or suicidal ideation/attempt. Depressed persons also have been characterized as self-deprecating and unrealistically pessimistic as well as suffering from distorted cognitive processes (Coyne & Gotlib, 1983). The only essential criterion for a diagnosis of major depression is that the syndrome be present for at least two weeks (Willner, 1985).

Prolonged Unemployment: The Reality And Responses, David C. Nethercott Jan 1986

Prolonged Unemployment: The Reality And Responses, David C. Nethercott

Graduate Research Papers

Prolonged unemployment is a profound social problem as evidenced by a rise in the suicide rate, mental hospital admissions, prison terms, homicides, and health related 1 deaths which appear in statistics several years later (Reigle, 1982). Roberts (1985) described the problem bluntly when she wrote, "unemployment is a killer" (p. 169). Shifron, Dye, and Shifron (1983) reported disturbing statistics that show an estimated 15 million Americans to be "hidden unemployed" or "discouraged workers", those who have given up on finding a job and no longer appear in labor statistics. Hidden unemployment in this article means simply 'not counted' in labor …

Children Of Alcoholics: A Review Of The Literature, Carol A. Tjaden Jan 1986

Children Of Alcoholics: A Review Of The Literature, Carol A. Tjaden

Graduate Research Papers

There are twenty-eight to thirty-four million children of alcoholics in the United States (Black, 1981; Edwards and Zander, 1985). Of these, twelve to fifteen million are currently living in alcoholic homes (Black, 1982). Children of alcoholics are three to four times more likely to become alcoholics themselves and half will marry an alcoholic (Parker, 1986). Studies have shown that alcoholism is involved in up to ninety percent of child abuse and neglect cases (Newlon and Furrow, 1986). Alcoholism is seen, then, as a source of distress for millions of Americans and a major problem facing society today. Children of alcoholics …
