Alcoholism: Family As The Identified Patient, Patricia Ann Tomson
Alcoholism: Family As The Identified Patient, Patricia Ann Tomson
Graduate Research Papers
Alcoholism or chemical dependency is a disease that is chronic, primary, progressive, and fatal. The progression of the disease can be arrested but not cured (Johnson, 1973). There are over ten million .adult drinkers in the United states that are problem drinkers (United States Department of Health, 1980). Therefore alcoholism is a major health problem in the United states today.
Child And Adolescent Suicide: A Perspective For The Elementary School Guidance Counselor, Gene Albert Schultz
Child And Adolescent Suicide: A Perspective For The Elementary School Guidance Counselor, Gene Albert Schultz
Graduate Research Papers
The elementary school guidance counselor is in a unique position to assist in the identification of young people who are at-risk or potential suicide casualties. The counselor can enhance this identification by alerting the school population (administrators, teachers, staff, and students) to the dynamics of suicide among young people (Deykin, 1984). Suicide implies a total turning away from life itself showing the inability or refusal to accept the terms of human development, both physically and emotionally (Maris, 1981 ). The elementary counselor must be aware of suicide not only from its tragic consequences but from the standpoint of positive prevention. …
The Use And Implementation Of Microcomputers In Secondary Administration, Kevin Crawford
The Use And Implementation Of Microcomputers In Secondary Administration, Kevin Crawford
Graduate Research Papers
The growth of computers since 1975 has been remarkable. Throughout. the country, computer stores are opening their doors to a public that is realizing the many uses of computers in homes, businesses, and schools. Computer technology has been available for many years, but it has only been since the availabilty of relatively inexpensive microcomputers that elementary and secondary schools could afford the educational advancement. National and state commissions on education recommended that computers become a part of the school curriculum. Boards of education have purchased computers to place in schools. Private industry has joined the computer movement in schools by …
Educating The American Indian/Alaska Native, Randy Kent Hawk
Educating The American Indian/Alaska Native, Randy Kent Hawk
Graduate Research Papers
American Indian/Alaska Native education has been a concern addressed primarily by American Indian/Alaska Native educators, parents, and interested citizens. Their concern has not yet made a major impact on the American educational system. It has surfaced largely in areas that are directly associated with American Indian/Alaska Native schools and communities. With nearly 70 percent of the American Indian/Alaska Native youth being currently educated in public schools, it is imperative that these concerns be recognized and addressed by the Non-Indian world as well (National Education Association, [NEA], 1983).
In Search Of America's Missing Children, Karen Saunders Hanson
In Search Of America's Missing Children, Karen Saunders Hanson
Graduate Research Papers
It has been called a "National Tragedy". It can happen in the park, at the beach, near the church, at the supermarket, at the playground, on the street in front of the house. One moment the child is there: the next moment gone. Short of death itself what could be more shocking to a family than having to report a child missing? Yet it happens to tens of thousands of parents each year. Because children can not look out for themselves, it is our responsibility to look out for them.
Physical Attractiveness Perceptions: Effect On The Counselor / Client Relationship, Georgia Rose Keenan
Physical Attractiveness Perceptions: Effect On The Counselor / Client Relationship, Georgia Rose Keenan
Graduate Research Papers
The concept of physical attractiveness appears to be an important dynamic of human existence (Barocas & Vance, 1974; Berscheid & Walster, 1972; Corrigan, Dell, Lewis, & Schimidt, 1980; Pogrebin, 1983; Ponzo, 1985). In the United States, billions of dollars are spent each year for cosmetic aids to improve appearance and societal acceptance (Pogrebin, 1983). "We live in a society that spends millions more on looks than on education or social services, yet we are oblivious to the impact of these priorities on the economic and emotional texture of our lives" (Pogrebin, 1983). Ponzo (1985) stated that as a society we …
Listening Efficiency, Walter F. Stromer
Listening Efficiency, Walter F. Stromer
Iowa Journal of Communication
In a recent issue of Communication Education, three new books on listening were reviewed.1 The reviewer said of one of the books that it was motivated by the notion that we listen at 25% efficiency. A check with the reviewer, by telephone, confirms that she questions the validity of that 25% figure. This author shares that doubt. The idea that we are inefficient listeners seems to have become a cliché. It is found in many new books on listening and communication, and often the idea is expressed without footnoting or supporting evidence. One wonders if people are really more …
Sex Role Inequality And Marital Stress, Joyce A. Thomas
Sex Role Inequality And Marital Stress, Joyce A. Thomas
Graduate Research Papers
As the once clear definitions of marital roles become increasingly blurred by the new options available to women and as the incidence of divorce continues to rise, the relationship between sex role behavior and marital dissatisfaction has become an area of mounting concern. Many women today who find themselves in more traditional type marital roles are beginning to question if, in fact, their unequal role status within their marriage is truly satisfying.
Profile Of The Incestuous Father, Cheryl Ann Walters
Profile Of The Incestuous Father, Cheryl Ann Walters
Graduate Research Papers
Incest, defined by Taylor (1984) as " ... the sexual touching between an adult and a child in a family for the personal gratification of the adult", is a serious problem in the United States (p. 195). In particular, father-daughter incest has been seen by counselors and therapists as a more frequently reported problem (Finkelhor, 1984). Finkelhor's (1978) survey results stated that at least 5 women out of every 1000 had been sexually abused by their fathers. However, a more recent study by Russell (1984) reported that 1 out of 44 women had incestuous relationships with their biological fathers.
Student Development Programming In Residence Halls, Debra Sue Van Mill
Student Development Programming In Residence Halls, Debra Sue Van Mill
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to examine the literature which deals with various student development programs which have been implemented in residence halls and the effects such programs have had on students' development. Specifically, the following questions were addressed: 1. What types of programs have been implemented in residence halls that utilize Student Development concepts? 2. Have these programs enhanced the educational growth of students?
An Analysis Of Using Teacher Colleagues In The Evaluation Process Of Faculty, Gary David Schwartz
An Analysis Of Using Teacher Colleagues In The Evaluation Process Of Faculty, Gary David Schwartz
Graduate Research Papers
Teachers have often been frustrated with the typical evaluation process that has an administrator doing the perfunctory, routine, bureaucratic requirements of assessing teachers once or twice a year (Rothberg, 1979; Wise & Darling-Hammond, 1985). Singh (1984) has claimed "some educators have charged that the existing ratings and written evaluations are of limited use in offering supervisory help to teachers for the improvement of instruction" (p. 73). Our nation, in the early days of American education, had practiced peer evaluation when the master teacher exercised evaluation responsibility over his colleagues (Ban & Soudah, 1978). As the public school system expanded and …

Countertransference In Counseling The Terminally Ill Client, Sharon Carpenter Curtis
Countertransference In Counseling The Terminally Ill Client, Sharon Carpenter Curtis
Graduate Research Papers
According to many authorities, probably the most universally shared human fears are those surrounding death (Clarke, 1981; Kubler-Ross, 1969; Momeyer, 1985). In counseling 11 life-threatened11 or dying clients, there is an urgent need for empathy and transparency on the part of the counselor. Ideally, it is essential for counselors to resolve as much as possible their own conflicts concerning "death issues" so that they are more able to help clients work through their own unresolved conflicts concerning the impending death.
Cognitive Therapy As A Treatment Technique Of Depression, Kathleen Moon Jordan
Cognitive Therapy As A Treatment Technique Of Depression, Kathleen Moon Jordan
Graduate Research Papers
A substantial body of research has indicated that the cognitive theory of depression, as well as the use of cognitive therapy in the treatment there of, has experienced widespread acceptance in the psychotherapeutic community. 1 Etiological theories of depression have been diverse, ranging from speculations concerning biochemical deficiencies and hereditary-constitutional deficits and speculation concerning internal psychological factors or subtle disruptions in patterns which travel between the organisms and the environment. Despite this diversity, the observed clinical syndrome has generally been described in strikingly consistent terms. Traditionally considered to be a disorder of affect, most descriptions also specify changes in cognitive, …
The Relationship Between Self Esteem And Substance Abuse In Adolescents, Martha Jill Windahl
The Relationship Between Self Esteem And Substance Abuse In Adolescents, Martha Jill Windahl
Graduate Research Papers
The rates of use of illegal drugs by youth in the United States is higher than in any other industrialized country in the world (Suffia, 1986). In a recent survey (Johnston & O'Malley, 1986) 1,600 high school seniors reported that: 5% used marijuana daily, 17% had tried cocaine (the highest rate ever recorded), 20% had used amphetamines sometime in their lifetimes. Ninety-three percent of all high school seniors surveyed had tried alcohol while 73% reported drinking heavily within two weeks prior to the survey. Although, except for cocaine use, these figures are lower than for previous years, trends, such as …

A Study Of Stress Perceived By Resident Assistants At The University Of Northern Iowa, David A. Shaw
Graduate Research Papers
All of us are exposed to some form of stress throughout our daily lives. This stress could be experienced in a variety of ways, whether it be from our jobs, interpersonal relationships, insecurities, or other factors that affect us. The resident assistant (RA) is exposed to the same stresses as other college students, as well as the additional stress placed on one who is balancing academic pressures along with the responsibilities of the RA position.
Infertility: A Developmental Crisis Related To Parenting, Barbara Jean Braband
Infertility: A Developmental Crisis Related To Parenting, Barbara Jean Braband
Graduate Research Papers
The crisis of infertility strikes one in six couples of childbearing age. "Infertility, the inability to achieve pregnancy after one year of regular sexual relations, or the inability to carry pregnancy to a live birth" (Menning, 1982, p. 155), will be experienced by 15-20% of the population of childbearing ages 22-40 years (Bernstein & Mattox, 1982; Goodman & Rothman, 1984). Infertility was diagnosed as either primary or secondary. According to Bernstein and Mattox (1982) primary infertility occurred if a pregnancy had never been achieved. If a woman had been pregnant at least once, even if that pregnancy resulted in an …
The Effect Of Theory And Clinical Instruction On Freshmen And Senior Nursing Students' Attitudes And Anxieties Toward Death And Dying, Mary K. Brown
The Effect Of Theory And Clinical Instruction On Freshmen And Senior Nursing Students' Attitudes And Anxieties Toward Death And Dying, Mary K. Brown
Graduate Research Papers
Growing old and dying are aspects of life most people do not care to think about. We tend to deny, avoid and when possible hide death as a means of escaping from it. Nursing educators are drawn into this situation because they must prepare nurses to cope with the many losses that will occur prior to a patient's final physical death. They must also help individuals to deal with the death of loved ones.
The Effects Of Early Field Experiences In The Professional Preparation Of Teachers: A Review Of Related Literature, Patricia K. Jackley
The Effects Of Early Field Experiences In The Professional Preparation Of Teachers: A Review Of Related Literature, Patricia K. Jackley
Graduate Research Papers
Early field experiences claim almost universal acceptance as a requirement in the professional development of teachers. The theory-practice link, in almost all professions, lies in the clinical experience component of professional studies. The design and development of effective clinical experiences contribute not only to the prospective member's knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, but also serve to characterize the evolution of the profession itself.

An Overview Of Research On Counseling Techniques Or Treatments Used With Learning Disabled Students Who Have Self-Esteem Difficulties, Susan Carlene Werner Bruce
An Overview Of Research On Counseling Techniques Or Treatments Used With Learning Disabled Students Who Have Self-Esteem Difficulties, Susan Carlene Werner Bruce
Graduate Research Papers
The importance of self-esteem in anyone's life, especially in a child's life, can hardly be overemphasized. Weinhold and Hilferty (1983) found that self-esteem, which had been verified in previous studies, is the mainspring that launches every child for success or failure as a human being. Because this sense of self-worth or lack thereof is manifested so early in life, and can have an effect on academic success, it is essential that school counselors learn how to nurture a child's sense of worth.
Stress And The Elementary School Student: Implications For The Elementary School Counselor, Gregory Paul Garth
Stress And The Elementary School Student: Implications For The Elementary School Counselor, Gregory Paul Garth
Graduate Research Papers
Elementary children, like anyone else, experience stress. Their world is not nearly as safe and protected as most people believe (Shapiro and Rylewicz, 1976). They have fears and anxieties that are just as threatening to their lifestyles as adults. However, where adults may understand the signs of stress, most children do not understand their reactions to stress or how to deal with stress.
A Method For Investigating Misperception Problems In Superior-Subordinate Relationships, Randall A. Rose
A Method For Investigating Misperception Problems In Superior-Subordinate Relationships, Randall A. Rose
Iowa Journal of Communication
A common conclusion in the organizational communication literature is that problems of superior-subordinate misperception and misunderstanding, often at extreme levels, are chronic occurrences. Authors such as Jablin and Hawkins and Preston have linked these perception problems to mutual misunderstanding of: subordinate job duties and requirements, future changes in the subordinate's job, and obstacles in the way of subordinate performance. It is safe to assume that misunderstandings of the types mentioned substantially affect organizational productivity and effectiveness. Thus, it is important that courses in organizational communication not only address the nature of superior-subordinate perception processes but that they also provide mechanisms …
Counseling For Mexican-American College Students, Ted Robert Johnson
Counseling For Mexican-American College Students, Ted Robert Johnson
Graduate Research Papers
The concept of the American "melting pot" is giving way to a country which celebrates ethnic diversity. This can be seen in the Mexican-American population, which is a large part of the rapidly growing Hispanic population. The latter includes large numbers of Cuban American, Puerto Ricans, and peoples whose heritage stems from Central and South America. The Hispanic population in the United States increased 61% between 1970 and 1980, from 9. 1 mill ion to 14.6 million (Ford Foundation, 1984). Extrapolating a continued pattern of growth, some experts believe that Blacks and Hispanics combined will surpass Whites as the nation's …
Understanding Why Children And Adolescents Attempt Suicide, Michael Thomas Brinkman
Understanding Why Children And Adolescents Attempt Suicide, Michael Thomas Brinkman
Graduate Research Papers
Until recently, childhood suicidal behavior has been a relatively neglected area of systematic research and clinical concern (Wells & Stuart, 1980). There were several contributing issues. First, completed suicide among children was considered to be rare. Second, it was believed that, due to a lack of physical prowess, youngsters could not affect a fatal self-injury. Third, because children under ten may not realize that death is final, it was thought that, by definition, youngsters could not be considered suicidal. Consequently, vital statistics do not catalog self-killing as a cause of death in children under ten.
Models Of Relationship And Problem Solving Training For Peer Counselors, Grace Smith
Models Of Relationship And Problem Solving Training For Peer Counselors, Grace Smith
Graduate Research Papers
One of the major considerations in the field of mental health had been the use and training of paraprofessionals in the helping process (Brown, 1974). Also called lay helpers or peer counselors, paraprofessionals are trained in using the basic skills of helping whether they are working in school or agency settings (Myrick & Emery, 1979). Peer counselors use these skills to enhance the functioning of professionals by adding to the number and range of people who can be helped, and by making sure that those who need professional help are referred (Rockwell & Dustin, 1979). In this way the visibility …
The Role Of Student Services In The Adjustment Process Of International Students, Debra L. Valdez
The Role Of Student Services In The Adjustment Process Of International Students, Debra L. Valdez
Graduate Research Papers
As the number of international students on American campuses continues to increase, institutions must constantly deal with the responsibilities they have to this special group of students. Responsibilities and obligations are assumed when the institution admits international students into its various programs (Cieslak, 1955; NAFSA, 1979). Cieslak (1955) noted that the kind and extent of the aid provided to international students is dependent on the number of these students on a given campus and the philosophy a particular institution holds in dealing with such a group.

The Wives Of Alcoholics: Three Models, Amy Moeller
The Wives Of Alcoholics: Three Models, Amy Moeller
Graduate Research Papers
Literature concerning wives of alcoholics has changed its focus dramatically during the past fifty years, moving through three different trends. The earliest model, called the "disturbed personality model," was the dominant point of view from the 1930's into the 1950's. It held that a woman who is in some way psychologically maladjusted - dependent, hostile, domineering, masochistic, sadistic - marries the alcoholic to fulfill her own neurotic needs.
