Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Accurate language assessment is essential in clinical and research contexts. However, most assessment tools and questionnaires have been developed within monolingual frameworks, overlooking the particularities of the vast multilingual population and, thus, often leading to misdiagnosis and inequitable care. Here, we examine the limitations of monolingual-centric approaches to language testing in multilinguals with acquired and progressive neurogenic disorders and explore the implications of multilingualism across linguistic, cognitive, neural, clinical, and sociocultural domains. We also address the need for technological innovation and theoretical refinement to better accommodate linguistic diversity in healthcare. Ultimately, we advocate for a nuanced, equitable, and culturally sensitive …

A Systematic Review Of Restorative Justice In Criminal Contexts, Sigifredo Castell Britton Jun 2026

A Systematic Review Of Restorative Justice In Criminal Contexts, Sigifredo Castell Britton

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Restorative justice has gained growing attention within criminal justice reform as a practical alternative to approaches centered only on punishment. It emphasizes accountability, dialogue, and community reintegration, offering a different way to understand how change in behavior takes place. This systematic review examined quantitative evidence from 34 studies, selected from an initial pool of 112 records identified through databases such as Google Scholar, ProQuest, JSTOR, and institutional repositories. The studies assessed a range of interventions, including victim-offender mediation, diversion programs, community conferencing, and in-prison initiatives, which allowed comparison across different settings and populations. Across these studies, 79.4% reported statistically significant …

Objective: Limited faculty understanding of LGBTQ+ student experiences may contribute to exclusionary campus climates and discriminatory practices. This study examined faculty perceptions to identify ways to improve support for LGBTQ+ students and promote inclusive environments.

Method: A descriptive quantitative design was used to examine faculty perceptions of LGBTQ+ students and differences across geographic regions. 142 participants completed the 20-item instrument.

Results: Although regional differences in acceptance were observed, geographic location did not significantly predict faculty attitudes. Faculty acceptance played a key moderating role in the relationship between awareness and engagement in inclusive practices. Findings indicated that faculty attitudes alone are …

Aid And Assist Cases In Multnomah County: An Exploration Of Ors 161.370, Savannah Jurasek Jun 2026

Aid And Assist Cases In Multnomah County: An Exploration Of Ors 161.370, Savannah Jurasek

Dissertations and Theses

Individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) are highly overrepresented in jails. In Oregon, these individuals can be eligible for what is referred to as the aid and assist process (ORS 161.370) which is designed to facilitate restorative care in efforts to ensure that vulnerable individuals can rationally participate in their criminal proceedings. However, continuous escalation in aid and assist orders (109.3% between 2011-2025) has led to strain on the Oregon State Hospital, the primary care facility for this population. As a consequence, defendants with SMI are spending unnecessary time in custody, despite hospitalization admission guidelines governed by previously decided case …

Shifting Perspectives In Mathematics: Examining Preservice Elementary Teachers' Evolving Conceptions Of Mathematics, Identity, And Social Inequality Through Course Design, Autumn Thu Pham Jun 2026

Shifting Perspectives In Mathematics: Examining Preservice Elementary Teachers' Evolving Conceptions Of Mathematics, Identity, And Social Inequality Through Course Design, Autumn Thu Pham

Dissertations and Theses

Mathematics is often viewed, taught, and learned as an abstract, stand-alone subject, with an emphasis on procedures that are frequently disconnected from learners' lived experiences. Within this framing, limited attention is given to students' affect and identities in relation to mathematics. As a result, opportunities to engage with mathematics as a social, sociopolitical, and empowering tool remain rare. These patterns highlight an important implication for teacher education programs: when mathematics is framed primarily as abstract and procedural, preservice elementary teachers (PTs) may enter the profession lacking strong conceptual understanding, pedagogical flexibility, and the social and political awareness needed to effectively …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Traditional in-person neuropsychological tests for Parkinson disease (PD) lack accessibility, scalability, and PD specificity. Mobility impairments hinder access to in-person assessments, and long waiting times for expert evaluation limit scalability. Common tools for cognitive screening, such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, are generic and not specific to PD.

Objective: The goal of this study was to address these challenges by leveraging the internet. This study aimed to develop a sensitive tool to detect cognitive impairments in early- to mid-stage PD in an accessible and scalable manner.

Methods: We developed the Online Rapid Cognitive Assessment for Parkinson's Disease (ORCA-PD), a …

Context-Aware Generative Differentiation Of Digital Content Slates, Indu Ramamurthi, Siva Kumar Gorantla Jun 2026

Context-Aware Generative Differentiation Of Digital Content Slates, Indu Ramamurthi, Siva Kumar Gorantla

Defensive Publications Series

A system and method for generating differentiated digital content slates are described. The technology utilizes a multi-pass, context-aware architecture to analyze and modify the text of multiple items presented together on a user interface. By sequentially rewriting product descriptions or titles based on the semantic overlap of the group, the system maximizes information entropy and provides users with distinct attributes for each item. This approach mitigates cognitive fatigue and semantic redundancy often associated with generic point-wise content generation. Keywords: Generative AI, Context-Aware Architecture, Content Slate, Semantic Differentiation, Dynamic Rewriting, Information Entropy.

Minimizing The Gap Between Church And Disability In Churches Of Christ, Paris Freeman Jun 2026

Minimizing The Gap Between Church And Disability In Churches Of Christ, Paris Freeman

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

Church members with intellectual and developmental disabilities often experience disconnection from their churches. This qualitative study examined this disconnect in three suburban Church of Christ congregations within the North Texas area. Using an ethnographic approach, data was collected through interviews with ministry leaders, participatory observation, and a literature review. The analysis of the data, in conjunction with family systems theory, was utilized to construct a model for disability ministry which validates personhood and promotes awareness of self and others. The impact of the church growth movement on disability was also examined, but no definitive correlation could be determined. Further research …

Introduction: Poststroke depression (PSD) affects approximately 33% of stroke survivors and is associated with worse outcomes, poor quality of life (QOL) and mortality. Despite its prevalence and consequences, there is no consensus on the most effective strategy for PSD prevention. Behavioural activation (BA) is an effective intervention for depression across diverse populations and is considered safer, better tolerated and a longer-lasting alternative to antidepressant medications. This study aims to test the effectiveness of a remotely delivered BA intervention to prevent PSD (Tele-BA-S).

Methods and analysis: We will conduct a randomised effectiveness trial of 350 low-income adults (≥ 55 years) within …

Seizure-Induced Resolution Of Depressive And Psychotic Symptoms In A Pregnant Patient: A Case Of Spontaneous Neuromodulation, Ariel E. Sosa Gomez, Ryan M. Go, David Valdez Jun 2026

Seizure-Induced Resolution Of Depressive And Psychotic Symptoms In A Pregnant Patient: A Case Of Spontaneous Neuromodulation, Ariel E. Sosa Gomez, Ryan M. Go, David Valdez

School of Medicine Publications

Many individuals with epilepsy often develop major depressive disorder (MDD), creating a complex interplay that exacerbates outcomes for affected individuals. The relationship between these disorders may be mediated by overlapping neurobiological mechanisms, including disturbances in the limbic system, neurotransmitter imbalances, and the psychosocial stressors of chronic illness. While the co-occurrence typically leads to a worsening of symptoms, rare instances have been reported in which seizure activity appears to ameliorate psychiatric symptomatology. We present the case of a 23-year-old pregnant Hispanic female with a longstanding history of treatment-resistant depression with psychotic features and epilepsy, who demonstrated full remission of depressive and …

Intramuscular Nad⁺ Therapy And Neuroenergetic Symptom Modulation: An Exploratory Retrospective Human Pilot Study, Zachary J. Dickey Do, Kirtan Patel Bs, Randy Aldret Edd, Cscs, Atc, Navneet Sharma Md, Glenn Goodwin Do

Journal for Sports Neuroscience

Abstract

Background: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺) is a central regulator of neuronal energy metabolism, mitochondrial function, and axonal integrity. Following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and repetitive subconcussive exposure, neurons undergo a neurometabolic crisis characterized by impaired oxidative phosphorylation, increased ATP demand, and depletion of intracellular NAD⁺ pools. Pre clinical models demonstrate that NAD⁺ depletion contributes to central energy dysregulation, cognitive dysfunction, and axonal and neuronal degeneration through disruption of NAD⁺-dependent pathways including SIRT1-mediated mitochondrial resilience, PARP1-driven NAD⁺ consumption, and SARM1-associated axonal breakdown. Despite growing preclinical evidence supporting NAD⁺based neuroprotection, human clinical data remains absent.

Methods: A real-world clinical pilot …

Non-Negotiable Responsibilities Of Librarians Despite The Presence Of Generative-Ai Powered Chatbots: An Overview, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The presence of AI-Chatbots as linguistic models of Generative AI is one that has sent cold in the spines of librarians for the fear of the unknown.  Against this backdrop, it is received with mixed feelings.  To some librarians, it poses threats to their traditional responsibilities hence the fear of losing their jobs.  This paper conceptualizes the place of generative-AI Chatbots in libraries and their limitations, identifying some non-negotiable responsibilities of librarians regardless of the emergence of AI-Chatbots as well as clearing some doubts as expressed by librarians by reconciling the impacts of Chatbot and how librarians can leverage the …

Lear's Madness: A Rhetoric Of The Unconscious, Driss Adli Jun 2026

Lear's Madness: A Rhetoric Of The Unconscious, Driss Adli

BOUHOUT

This article studies Lear’s madness in Shakespeare’s King Lear as a rhetoric of the unconscious. It argues that Lear’s mad speech should not be read only through Elizabethan psychology or as a simple consequence of excessive passion, but as a meaningful discourse that reveals hidden psychic materials, memories, conflicts, and truths. Drawing on psychoanalytic perspectives, especially Freud’s reflections on dreams and the unconscious, the article shows how Lear’s language transforms madness into a mode of revelation. Through images, metaphors, repetitions, and apparently disordered statements, Lear exposes injustice, hypocrisy, social violence, and the hidden tensions of the play. The study therefore …

Mind Over Distance: The Food Proximity Effect On Candy Taking In A Field Setting And Moderation By Trait Mindfulness In A Hypothetical Setting, Brian P. Meier, Adam Fetterman Jun 2026

Mind Over Distance: The Food Proximity Effect On Candy Taking In A Field Setting And Moderation By Trait Mindfulness In A Hypothetical Setting, Brian P. Meier, Adam Fetterman

Psychology Faculty Publications

The food proximity effect reveals that people are more likely to take and/or consume food when it is physically close versus distant. The effect is explained in terms of mindless eating or eating/taking food for non-hunger reasons. Yet, little work has examined the effect in experimental field settings or in relation to moderating variables. In two studies (N = 533), the authors examined candy proximity and candy taking in a field setting (Study 1) and in an online hypothetical setting (Study 2) in which trait mindfulness was examined. Study 1 was conducted in a building hallway in which passersby …

Toward An Account Of Visual Aesthetic Experience In Multimodal Large Language Models, Batuhan Saridede Jun 2026

Toward An Account Of Visual Aesthetic Experience In Multimodal Large Language Models, Batuhan Saridede

Cognitive Science Senior Theses

While Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) increasingly mediate visual culture, far less is known about how MLLMs themselves evaluate aesthetic value and how those evaluations shift under different beliefs about authorship. This thesis investigates how three commercial MLLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini) appraise visual artworks across six dimensions: liking, beauty, profundity, worth, narrativity, and intentionality. Using a balanced dataset of 100 artworks, half human-generated and half AI-generated, with representational and abstract works equally represented, each model evaluated every image under four provenance conditions: unspecified origin, inferred origin, assumed AI origin, and assumed human origin. Results show that representationalism in visual …

Rape Pregnancies And Consequent Ptsd Resulting From The Overturn Of Roe V. Wade, Emma Lindenfelser, Yulia Garaeva, Nenette Nti-Agyemang, Ellen Davis, Anna Kabwa, Alexandra M Calaman

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

Prior to the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, access to safe legal abortions was limited and often restricted along racial, economic, and geographic lines. Nearly fifty years later, women’s health policy evolved again following the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision overturning Roe v. Wade. This court ruling decimated federal protections of abortion. This paper presents the research that the 2022 Dobbs judicial decision may contribute to and exacerbate rape-related PTSD on 1 out of 20 American who are unable to access a safe abortion after a rape-related pregnancy. Pregnant women living in conservative states that have outlawed …

Factors Impacting Healthcare Utilization Among African American Young Adults, Deebari Barisi Jun 2026

Factors Impacting Healthcare Utilization Among African American Young Adults, Deebari Barisi

Symposium of Student Scholars

The aim of our research is to examine how everyday discrimination, experiences with health care, medical mistrust, and health literacy are related to the postponement and utilization of healthcare service in young African American individuals. The question we're trying to answer is if the occurrence of medical mistrust affects the postponement of medical care in African American young adults. Our hypothesis is that higher levels of medical mistrust and postponement of medical care will have a positive correlation. Previous research has shown that there is an inverse relationship between perceived racism, medical mistrust, low health literacy, previous negative experiences and …

Ai For Mental Health: A Design Science Approach, Amaya Ballard, Ewaoluwa Jaiyesimi Jun 2026

Ai For Mental Health: A Design Science Approach, Amaya Ballard, Ewaoluwa Jaiyesimi

Symposium of Student Scholars

AI-based mental health chatbots are increasingly being introduced to expand access to psychological support, especially where stigma, cost, scheduling constraints, or limited availability make traditional therapy services difficult to use. Many people are beginning to turn to these tools for immediate, low-threshold assistance when experiencing stress or emotional distress. However, we still know relatively little about the situations in which individuals feel comfortable relying on AI for support, or when they would prefer human help instead, creating uncertainty about how such systems should be designed and deployed responsibly. This study examines how users evaluate AI-based mental health support compared with …

Research Barriers And Mentorship Quality, Amelia Baker, Fernanda Herrera-Candanedo, Abeer A. Kayser, Coraima Perez Jun 2026

Research Barriers And Mentorship Quality, Amelia Baker, Fernanda Herrera-Candanedo, Abeer A. Kayser, Coraima Perez

Symposium of Student Scholars

Undergraduate research is widely acknowledged as a high-impact educational practice, contributing to students’ academic success, professional readiness, and retention (Bhattacharyya et al., 2018). However, disparities persist in access, mentorship quality, and institutional support with many students’ reporting uncertainty about how to access opportunities (White et al., 2023). Prior research has found that stipends significantly influence participation, especially among underrepresented students (Edwards et al., 2024; Messier et al., 2013). Other studies underscore the critical role of mentor accessibility and supportive research environments (Behar-Horenstein et al., 2010; Byars-Winston et al., 2023). Little research has examined the impact of these identified barriers on …
