A Foundation Model For The Practice Of School Psychology, George Michael Harper Aug 1990

A Foundation Model For The Practice Of School Psychology, George Michael Harper

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A major crisis in the profession of school psychology has emerged from the body of recent empirical studies in psychology and education. Research on school psychology assessments has suggested that little, if any, data are produced in these evaluations which is useful for the remediation of students' educational problems. Likewise, psycho- educational treatments of the behavior and learning problems of school children have empirically shown only weak, if any, efficacy. An examination of some of the fundamental philosophical, theoretical, and practical foundations of school psychology yielded reasons for the crisis in the profession. The underlying assumptions of externalism and resulting …

Leisure Education In Career Counseling, Susan M. Schmitz Chizek Jan 1990

Leisure Education In Career Counseling, Susan M. Schmitz Chizek

Graduate Research Papers

The interelatedness of work and leisure roles should be viewed as having a significant part to play in the career development process. There remains the need to cultivate an understanding of the functions and contributions of leisure to career development and to learn how leisure may be employed as a campus resource in fostering student development. Many factors are influencing the need for better educated students on quality leisure skills. The nature of work in today's society has changed, and its ability to provide satisfaction to the worker has diminished. However, good quality leisure skills will lead to better satisfied …

The Freshman Year Experience: Orientation As A Key To Retention, Beverly A. Meyer Jan 1990

The Freshman Year Experience: Orientation As A Key To Retention, Beverly A. Meyer

Graduate Research Papers

Freshmen face a critical time in their lives when they step on to the college or university campus. They encounter new people, new rules, and an entirely new environment. The experience can be demanding, frightening and stressful. The first impression of a college or university does influence the character of a student's other early experiences. Students need to separate from the past and make a transition into a new social and intellectual world. Russel and Thompson (1980) stated that even positive events create stress on one's mental and physical health that requires an increased amount of coping skills and support.

Group Parent Education: Critical Issues Regarding Pet, Behavioral And Adlerian Programs, Jan Hanson Jan 1990

Group Parent Education: Critical Issues Regarding Pet, Behavioral And Adlerian Programs, Jan Hanson

Graduate Research Papers

Parent Education has long been a national concern. Frazier and Matthes (1975) stated that efforts to help individuals develop more effective relationships with their children have increased consistently over the past seventy-five (75) years. Over the past twenty-five (25) 1 years parent education has become a complex field with numerous books, movies, and pre-packaged programs being used to guide parents (Cooney, 1981; Sherrets, Authier, & Tramontana, 1980; Rinn & Markle, 1977; Dembo, Sweitzer, & Lauritzen, 1985; Getz & Gunn, 1988).

Adult Development And Career Stage Theories: Their Application To Staff Development Of Teachers In Midcareer, Margaret Mary Weigel

Graduate Research Papers

State policies, local policies, A Nation at Risk. The Carnegie Task Force and the Holmes Group are among the wave of school reports and reforms that have caught schools in a cross-fire of conflicting demands to be more effective. The approaches of school reform range from state-mandated teacher accountability programs, professionalized training, philosophical questions about schooling's structure, mission and methods. The "second wave" reforms have stressed the need to enhance teacher morale, motivation, and participation (Mitchell & Peters, 1988).

Self-Esteem As A Predictive Factor In Juvenile Delinquency, David D. Carlson Jan 1990

Self-Esteem As A Predictive Factor In Juvenile Delinquency, David D. Carlson

Graduate Research Papers

Volumes of research have been written over the past forty years on factors related to delinquency. Theories on the causation of delinquency have been derived from three basic perspectives: biological, psychological, and environmental-sociological (Johnson, Bird, & Little, 1981; Empey, 1982). Biological causes include genetic and physical structure of the child. The psychological perspectives sees delinquency as a result of emotional instability. Environmental reasons include socio-economic status of the child's family, peer group pressure, and neighborhood cultural characteristics. The purpose of this paper is to review the relationship of self-esteem and delinquency and primarily focus on whether a low level of …

The Portrayal Of Single-Parent Families In Young Adult Fiction, Elaine M. Reicks Jan 1990

The Portrayal Of Single-Parent Families In Young Adult Fiction, Elaine M. Reicks

Graduate Research Papers

A content analysis was used to examine 19 young adult novels to determine whether single-parent families were realistically portrayed.

Books published between 1985-1989 were selected from "Booklist", "School Library Journal", and "Junior High Library Catalog." Hypotheses dealt with the status of single-parent units and the effect on the parent and the child in making the adjustment to the new family structure. Six of the hypotheses were accepted; seven were rejected. The researcher concluded that young adult fiction was realistically portraying the status of single-adoptive units, the single parent's financial stress and problems in household management, as well as the adolescent's …

New Perspectives On Alcoholism In Women And Their Implications For Prevention, Outreach And Treatment, Joan Jorgensen Hoeft Jan 1990

New Perspectives On Alcoholism In Women And Their Implications For Prevention, Outreach And Treatment, Joan Jorgensen Hoeft

Graduate Research Papers

Alcoholism is one of the most serious public health problems in the United States today (National Council on Alcoholism, 1985). Alcoholism and alcohol abuse account for approximately 98,000 deaths annually, and twenty percent of national expenditures for hospital care (National Council on Alcoholism, 1985). One out of three Americans (56 million) said alcohol abuse has caused problems for their families (National Council on Alcoholism, 1985).

Section V: Meeting Student Needs In Rural Education [Blundall], Joan Blundall

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Many students, families and community members have gone through tremendous changes in the 1980s. The economic and social upheaval of the rural debt crisis of this decade, though put to death by many, continues to impact our rural systems. While many rural youth have experienced major losses direct (change in residence, working status of parents, role changes within the family), some have experienced those changes indirectly (friends exiting communities, discussions of school/church closing). What is unknown to school personnel and helping professionals is the extent of which the changes of the 80s have been processed by children or the extent …

Discipline Policy Considerations For The Administrator, Daniel Stehn Jan 1990

Discipline Policy Considerations For The Administrator, Daniel Stehn

Graduate Research Papers

According to a 1989 Gallup/Phi Delta Kappa poll, the most frequently mentioned problem confronting teachers is the lack of interest and support on the part of parents (Elam, 1989). Elam also found that other problems of major concern were the students' lack of interest and lack of discipline. It has always been convenient to blame the student and his immediate environment for his inability to perform academically. The question I wish to ask is "what is the school's responsibility in creating a positive learning environment?" If it is the school's goal to make "oranges" into "apples," how do we do …

Are Children Really What They Eat?, Jerry Brown Jan 1990

Are Children Really What They Eat?, Jerry Brown

Graduate Research Papers

The idea of looking at the entire picture is what Vass (1984) referred to as "holism." This simply stated that people cannot be fully understood unless the mind and body are seen as having an integral relationships. To understand children's behavior by looking at it holistically would be a major undertaking, but it is important to keep this in mind. A more limited approach to understanding a child's behavior would be to look at sugar, caffeine, food additives, and food allergies as factors in hyperactivity of elementary age kids.

Identity Issues And Psychosocial Problems Of Gay Adolescents: Implications For The School Counselor, Brenda Helm Thompson Jan 1990

Identity Issues And Psychosocial Problems Of Gay Adolescents: Implications For The School Counselor, Brenda Helm Thompson

Graduate Research Papers

Historically, gay people have come under heavy repression in this country, causing them to become an invisible minority, even though they account for approximately 10% of the population (Dworkin & Gutierrez, 1989). Although gay rights and gay liberation embodied significant movements toward freedom from oppression for gay activists of the late 1960's and 1970's, that freedom-to-be is not a reality yet today. Today's gay youth, not yet born when the gay revolution caught fire, are relegated to a stigmatized role in a homophobic society. (In this paper the term "gay" will be used to refer to both male and female …

The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor In Dealing With Latchkey Children, Bruce C. Gast Jan 1990

The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor In Dealing With Latchkey Children, Bruce C. Gast

Graduate Research Papers

Children's care of themselves in the absence of adult supervision has existed since the industrial revolution and is an important part of current reality. To ensure that 1 keys to houses are not lost, many children, responsible for letting themselves into their homes after school, are required by their parents to wear keys on a chain around their necks. This explains where the term "latchkey" originated and why these kids are called this today. The latchkey problem is not new; it was a concern more than 80 years ago. Stroman and Duff (1982) reported that the theme of the 1943 …

Leadership Development: A Challenge To Higher Education, Cynthia J. Thompson Jan 1990

Leadership Development: A Challenge To Higher Education, Cynthia J. Thompson

Graduate Research Papers

Our nation is in need of leaders. Alvin Toffler brought this matter to public consciousness in his book, The Third Wave (Elsner, 1984). Pace reinforced this concern when, four years later, he wrote of the need to increase the number and quality of leaders, particularly at the college level. He warned that a society as large as the United States must constantly increase the flow of qualified leaders at all levels in the system to fulfill its responsibilities ( cited in Young, 1986). Evidence that this problem is still present, and possibly getting worse, is found in the comment made …

Decentralization Of The University Counseling Services, Douglas David Kilian Jan 1990

Decentralization Of The University Counseling Services, Douglas David Kilian

Graduate Research Papers

There is a growing trend in colleges and universities throughout the country to reintegrate existing centralized counseling services by coordinating these resources through a decentralized concept. This has been particularly true in colleges where counseling has become an integral part of the educational program (Kapraun & Stephenson, 1982). Faculty and student personnel administrators realize that meeting student needs goes beyond acclimatization to the college environment. There is a growing momentum to go a step beyond acclimatization, to prevention, career vocational planning, lifelong wellness programming, and liaison counseling programs within the residence halls (Huebner, 1987; Kapraun & Stephenson, 1982; McLeod, Tercek, …

Employee Stock Ownership Plans: New Players In The Leveraged Buyout Game, Jon Shepherd Jan 1990

Employee Stock Ownership Plans: New Players In The Leveraged Buyout Game, Jon Shepherd

Draftings In

Hostile takeover. Leveraged buyout. Almost every company chief executive hates to hear those two terms and tries to guard against his or her company becoming the object of an unwanted suitor. Lately, some major companies have been taking steps to protect themselves against possible buyout offers, and one of the most popular defense maneuvers has been to institute employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs). Why did companies originally begin using ESOPs? Will employee stock ownership plans actually protect companies from hostile takeovers? Will ESOPs be used in friendly leveraged buyouts, or will ESOPS be used in hostile takeovers to gain control …
