Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall, Who's The Fairest Of Them All?, Rachelle Bierl

American Popular Culture is highly influenced by the Greek ideal of the ''body beautiful" as transmitted through the Renaissance and late nineteenth century. The art of ancient Greece, unique unto itself, suggested a universality that had not existed prior to the Greek culture (Lerner et al. 131). The ideal physical form, illustrated in classic works which still exist today, had high status in the Greek culture.

"You Are Late. Off With Your Heads?": Time In American Pop Culture, Jennifer Rupp

Draftings In

Time is perceived to be a valuable resource (Lauer 4). Some people even compare managing their time with managing money: they save and they spend (Lauer 13). Technology has provided a number of timesaving devices to enable people to use time to its fullest potential, and now Americans cram as many activities as possible into a period of time. Often this rushing about is for the sole purpose of creating more leisure time. Instead, in reality the opposite occurs and people are constantly running to beat deadlines and get more done. Ironically, American Popular Culture, obsessed with saving time, has …

Communication And Nonprofit Organization: Directions For The 1990s, Gordon Dabbs Jan 1990

Communication And Nonprofit Organization: Directions For The 1990s, Gordon Dabbs

Iowa Journal of Communication

While communication scholars have spent a great deal of time analyzing the culture and communication surrounding profit-seeking businesses in the last twenty years, relatively little communication research has focused on the unique communication characteristics of the nonprofits. The time has come for us to take notice of these growing businesses and to formulate organizational communication theories reflecting the structures and operations of the wave of nonprofits that continues to rise around us.

This paper will examine the nonprofits association to sketch their purposes, their economic and political growth, and their organizational properties and communication characteristics. The paper will then suggest …

The Impact Of Cooperative Learning On Student Attitudes And Achievement, Cheryl L. Finer Jan 1990

The Impact Of Cooperative Learning On Student Attitudes And Achievement, Cheryl L. Finer

Graduate Research Papers

It is essential for teachers to know how and when to structure students' learning goals competitively, individualistically, or cooperatively. Each goal structure has its place. Goal structures determine the way in which students will interact with each other and how the teacher will achieve an instructional goal. It is important for students to learn which behaviors are expected in each situation. By using all three goal structures students learn how to collaboratively work with others, compete for fun and enjoyment, and work on their own. Johnson and Johnson ( 1987) stated that no aspect of teaching is more important than …

The Educational Impact Of The Assistant Principal, Dennis Eugene Modlin Jan 1990

The Educational Impact Of The Assistant Principal, Dennis Eugene Modlin

Graduate Research Papers

Literature dealing with secondary school administration gives little reference to the educational role or impact of the assistant principal. Reports at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association by Marshall (1984) and Reed (1984) suggest that the role of the assistant principal is fairly ambiguous and oriented primarily to serving an organizational stability function only peripherally related to the instructional domain in schools.

The Effects Of School Climate On Student Self-Concept, Robert P. Saathoff Jan 1990

The Effects Of School Climate On Student Self-Concept, Robert P. Saathoff

Graduate Research Papers

School organization and climate compete with many contemporary forces for influence on the development of students; self-concept. Self- concept, which begins to develop at birth, acts as a filter which educational experiences will alter, for good or ill. Purkey, Abdel, and Cage (1983) reported that "inviting" or "disinviting" messages inform the child of his or her abilities, values, and autonomy, or the lack thereof. Every experience the child has and every interpretation he or she makes of that experience influence the development of the child's self-concept. Purkey and Novak (1988) suggested self-concept, then, is each individual's perception of his or …

The Image Of The Adolescent Girl In Recommended Romantic Fiction For Young Adults, 1979-1989, Judy Elaine Mcclure Jan 1990

The Image Of The Adolescent Girl In Recommended Romantic Fiction For Young Adults, 1979-1989, Judy Elaine Mcclure

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this content analysis was to investigate how realistically novelists portrayed the image of the teenage girl in fiction written for young adults. The researcher analyzed twenty-two books with copyrights from 1979 to 1989, novels identified in Booklist which had one additional review and were. still in print at the time of the study. A checklist adapted from Offer's Self-Image Questionnaire was used in analyzing the psychological self, social self, sexual self, familial self, and coping self.

With the use of the checklist the following hypotheses were accepted:

1. The majority of the romantic fiction of the 1980's …

Intervention For Men Who Batter Women, Renee Else Jan 1990

Intervention For Men Who Batter Women, Renee Else

Graduate Research Papers

An estimate 1.8 million women are beaten by their spouses each year (Edelson, 1984). During recent years battered women shelters and services have been established to protect women and children during times of family crisis. The problem of woman battering has been recorded throughout history but research on intervention, particularly with men who batter, is in its infancy (Tolman & Edelson, 1989). In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the numbers of programs established to help men change their violent behavior. This article reviews the published research on intervention with men who batter. Intervention with men who …

A Case For The Sexual Impulsivity Perspective For Describing Issues Of Sexual Control, Barton A. Wieden Jan 1990

A Case For The Sexual Impulsivity Perspective For Describing Issues Of Sexual Control, Barton A. Wieden

Graduate Research Papers

Currently, existing sexual dysfunction information has centered upon sexual desire and/or sexual response. Unfortunately, the concern over what has been referred to as sexual compulsivity (Quadland, 1985), sexual addiction (Schwartz & Brasted, 1985; Carnes, 1983), and sexual impulsivity (Barth & Kinder, 1987) had been met with sparse research at best. Much of what is now available is based upon historical discussions of hyperactive sexuality or nymphomania and satyriasis, the former receiving, the plurality of attention despite its lack of an operational definition and its sexist and judgmental connotation (Quadland, 1985).

Section V: Meeting Student Needs In Rural Education [Herzberg], Kim Herzberg Jan 1990

Section V: Meeting Student Needs In Rural Education [Herzberg], Kim Herzberg

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

A common theme of mixed messages indicating despair and hope emerges as rural Iowans have faced the economic fragility of the nineteen eighties. Abandoned businesses and farms, poorly kept properties that once were neatly groomed, new businesses representing only outside financial interests, expectations of inevitable decline and the mistrust of one's neighbors are becoming more common in rural communities. If a person displayed similar characteristics such as withdrawal and mistrust of others, poor grooming, negative statements about the future and general despondency, one might conclude the person has a low self-esteem or is suffering from depression. If a child were …

Realistic Depiction Of Symptoms And Consequences Of Parental Problem Drinking In Young Adult Novels, Teresa A. Bunday Jan 1990

Realistic Depiction Of Symptoms And Consequences Of Parental Problem Drinking In Young Adult Novels, Teresa A. Bunday

Graduate Research Papers

This research was a content analysis study of young adult novels that contained a parent with a drinking problem. The researcher wanted to determine the level of real ism regarding the characterizations of the child of an alcoholic, the drinker, and the spouse of the drinker. The hypothese predicted that a majority of the books would include: 1. three or more consequence of drinking on the child, 2. four or more consequences or symptoms on the drinker, and 3. one or more consequences suffered by the spouse. A checklist that listed known consequences and symptoms of alcohol abuse was developed. …

The Use Of Rational Emotive Therapy With Adolescents And Their Parents, Nancy J. Walters Jan 1990

The Use Of Rational Emotive Therapy With Adolescents And Their Parents, Nancy J. Walters

Graduate Research Papers

In recent years, more than at any time in the history of education, schools are looked upon to meet the emotional and social needs of students, as well as to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic (Ellis & Bernard, 1983). This is coming at a time when we have witnessed a steady increase in adolescent suicide, drug abuse and pregnancy, in addition to adolescent anxiety, depression, guilt, stress and alienation (Vernon, 1983).

Section V: Meeting Student Needs In Rural Education [Frank], Robert Frank

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

A few years ago a graduate student of mine constructed a scenario of an "oppressed" school in which the human relations components of a school were highlighted. Examples of this school were identified by a variety of verbal and written communications between administrators, teachers and students. If the illustrations were not so painfully consistent with what actually occurs in the daily life of the school, they would be humorous and entertaining. They were neither humorous or entertaining. Students, teachers and administrators often create situations which demoralize or destroy the self-esteem of its participants. Education to create maximum individual learning for …

Prefatory Note: Happiness And The Teaching Of English, Geraldine E. Larocque Jan 1990

Prefatory Note: Happiness And The Teaching Of English, Geraldine E. Larocque

Draftings In

Happiness is the full use of one's powers along the lines of excellence in a life that offers scope.

Could the above Greek definition of happiness serve as an all-encompassing goal for teachers of English in the secondary school? If so, how could we encourage the full, excellent use of all of our students' talents in ways calculated to improve their public and private lives? In helping students use all their talents, would we not also counteract the perception that the quality of English instruction has declined?

Stress And Graduate School, Irene D. Gordon Jan 1990

Stress And Graduate School, Irene D. Gordon

Graduate Research Papers

Graduate students face an increased number of activities and responsibilities while in graduate school that, taken together, can be stressful. Upon entering graduate school, a graduate assistant becomes involved in activities such as becoming a staff member, teachers assistant, advisor, counselor, or research assistant. The student must also carry a heavy course load in addition to the requirements of a graduate assistantship. This increase in activities is in addition to other problems the student already may face: family anxiety, unevenness in preparation and experiences among students, program inflexibility, and lack of support services for graduate students. Researchers have determined that …

Factors Affecting International Student Adjustment In The U.S., Cynthia Louise Karl Jan 1990

Factors Affecting International Student Adjustment In The U.S., Cynthia Louise Karl

Graduate Research Papers

The international student population is a highly visible and significant subset of the student body of many American colleges and universities. Students from other countries have been coming to the United States since 1784 (Hendricks & Skinner, 1977; Meloni, 1986), and the numbers continue to increase substantially. For example, the international student enrollment in 1930 was 9,643 students; by 1953 that number had risen to 33,647 due to the postwar efforts to help rebuild and develop other countries through direct financial aid and education (Meloni, 1986). As of 1986, the number of international students enrolled in the U.S. is almost …

How Children Cope With Death And The Role Adults Play, Jean Kruse Jan 1990

How Children Cope With Death And The Role Adults Play, Jean Kruse

Graduate Research Papers

In the nineteen century, the experience of death was a very normal process for children to witness through the death of a brother, sister or parent. At that time most people died in the home, rather than in a hospital, and all the children were involved in caring for the dying family member. Because of this involvement children found nothing strange about death. Jackson (1965) wrote, "that for the children of that vintage death was natural, not remote" (p. 84).

Psycho-Social Needs Of Patients With Aids, Nancy Baker Jan 1990

Psycho-Social Needs Of Patients With Aids, Nancy Baker

Graduate Research Papers

AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome and is a disease caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The AIDS virus (HIV) may live in the human body for years and can be spread to others before any symptoms appear through sexual contact, use of contaminated IV drug needles and, rarely; through blood transfusions. Also, a woman who is infected with the AIDS virus can give it to her infant either before, during, or after birth. It primarily affects the body by attacking the immune system and leaving the body vulnerable to illnesses that can be fatal. These illnesses are called …
