Issue One: Curriculum That Adequately Addresses The Concerns And Needs Of People Of Color In Education [L. Brown], Leander A. Brown

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

If the trend in multicultural education literature were examined, we would find that it received major attention for about 10 years from the late 1960s until the late 1970s. Disappointingly, the attention then declined until the late 1980s. Towards the latter part of the active period just cited, Stanley D. Ivie of Shaw University questioned in the Journal of Teacher Education whether multicultural education was a "boon or boondoggle."

Issue Five: Expectations And Standards Of Performance For People Of Color In Education [Ishler], Peggy Ishler

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

If one examines the questions surfacing from the title of this paper, it becomes clear that a serious problem exists in education today. Why consider standards of performance for people of color that are different from standards for all other students in the nation? Does this mean people of color cannot be expected to meet the level of performance required for the rest of the population? Is this standards issue the reason the number of university graduates of color has been dwindling to the smallest percentage in the last two decades?

These disturbing questions need to be examined in this …

Isabel Archer And The Persephone Myth: A Psychological Case Study, Donna Mallin Jan 1991

Isabel Archer And The Persephone Myth: A Psychological Case Study, Donna Mallin

Draftings In

In The Portrait of a Lady (1881), Henry James has created a complex character, Isabel Archer, whose decisions defy glib interpretations. In particular, the ending of the novel in which Isabel chooses to return to Rome and a loveless marriage rather than to liberate herself from its constraints, is enigmatic. Since James chooses not to reveal Isabel's reasons for this decision, there is much ambiguity. What does this decision reveal about Isabel's psychological and moral development? And, in turn, what does Isabel's decision tell us about women's development in general?

Lily Bart: A Surfacing Inner Voice, L. Christine White Jan 1991

Lily Bart: A Surfacing Inner Voice, L. Christine White

Draftings In

In Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth (1905), Lily Bart undergoes two conflicts: first, between freedom of personal expression and social role-playing, and, second, between personal and social moral codes. These conflicts, which interfere with Lily's attempted psychological and moral growth, are manifested in her struggle between private and public "voice," a term Mary F. Belenky and co-authors describe as being "a metaphor that can apply to many aspects of women's experience and development" (18). In order to analyze the effects of these conflicts on Lily's psychological and moral growth, one must first examine the makeup of her private and …

Issue One: Curriculum That Adequately Addresses The Concerns And Needs Of People Of Color In Education [Pearson-Stevens], Terry Pearson-Stevens

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Note: It is my belief that each racial group can speak better for itself than anyone else. Therefore, in this paper I will refer primarily to African-American students even though I am certain that information contained within has the same implications for all Third-World people.

Sooner or later educators must collectively acknowledge that neither traditional nor contemporary educational methods have succeeded in providing equitable learning experiences for African-American students.

The very educational system that stimulates the growth and development of Caucasian children by reinforcing what is familiar to them acts as a depressant to African-American children who are made to …

The Application Of Student Development Theory In Multicultural Programming, Sharon Kay Johannsen Jan 1991

The Application Of Student Development Theory In Multicultural Programming, Sharon Kay Johannsen

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to examine the application of student development theory in multicultural programming. Part I takes a look at the theoretical models of Hoopes (1979) and Katz (1984). Bridges (1980, 1988) offered insight into ideas from the corporate world which may apply directly to related issues in higher education. Part II looks at the application of theory from first an administrative and then a student affairs approach. Combined, both approaches prove valuable for the institution as a whole to utilize effective models and implement multicultural programming. Part Ill offers implications and advances the discussion of issues, …

A Case Study Of Lawyers’ Opening Statements And Closing Arguments To A Jury In Two Related Criminal Trials, Christina Marie Frederickson Jan 1991

A Case Study Of Lawyers’ Opening Statements And Closing Arguments To A Jury In Two Related Criminal Trials, Christina Marie Frederickson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This case study was executed by observing three lawyers in two related criminal trials. I observed the opening statements of one trial and closing arguments of both. The intent of my study was to discover what the legal and communication literature advocated to the lawyer concerning courtroom communication, what the three lawyers did in presenting their messages to a judge and jury, and what the lawyers thought they did. The analysis centered on the shared and contrasting elements between the three lawyers in their attempt to identify and intensify their case to the jury during the opening and closing remarks. …

Determining An Alternative Organizational Structure Within Two Small/Rural Iowa School Districts: A Case Study Of An Innovative Decision Making Process, David Wayne Stoakes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The issues confronting small/rural schools in the state of Iowa are very complex, raging in scope from the loss of student population, limited financial resources, quality of academic and extra-curricular programs, and even to the very survival of the community in which the school is located. Because of these issues school administrators, boards of education, and school district patrons are confronted with finding a new organizational structure for their school. Processes and procedures used to make these decisions have typically led to emotional battles within the school and community.

The purpose of this study was to apply the Nominal Group …

A Descriptive Study Of Perceived-Effective Rural Superintendents In The State Of Iowa, Bonnie Korver Baum Jan 1991

A Descriptive Study Of Perceived-Effective Rural Superintendents In The State Of Iowa, Bonnie Korver Baum

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The nature of the superintendent's responsibilities has changed significantly since the first school superintendent in the United States was hired in the 1830s. Superintendents today have a great influence on education. That influence is felt in rural schools as well as urban and suburban districts. Rural schools have certain unique administrative problems. Solving those problems depends on the vision, leadership, and effectiveness of the administration.

The purpose of this study was to identify selected characteristics of effective rural superintendents. Five rural Iowa superintendents, identified as effective by their peers, were studied in depth. The qualitative dissertation identified characteristics in four …

An Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Composites Utilizing Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate Thermoplastic, Jaroslav V. Vaverka Jan 1991

An Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Composites Utilizing Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate Thermoplastic, Jaroslav V. Vaverka

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Removing plastic from landfills does not solve the solid waste problem entirely. Plastic products are difficult to recycle because, unlike aluminum or glass, the plastics used in food packaging cannot be reused for the same purpose. Among the commonly used plastic resins, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has been widely adopted by the packaging industry. This research study was concerned with recycling of PET thermoplastic in concrete as a way to reduce the volume of solid waste.

Current surveys of recycling efforts reveal that existing PET recycling approaches have become inadequate. Solid waste management is stressing the eminent need for new recycling …

Handwriting: Past To Present, Carol Collins Jan 1991

Handwriting: Past To Present, Carol Collins

Graduate Research Papers

Is handwriting becoming a lost art? In this technological society where forms must be printed or typed clearly are we losing our ability to write our language? When the typewriter came into popular use, it was claimed handwriting would no longer be a needed skill. This has not been proven true. Templin (1960) concluded that while the typewriter gradually supplanted handwriting for making permanent records, "there ls strong evidence to support the belief that all children now in school will need handwriting in their business and social lives for many years to come" (p. 164).
