The Effects Of Extracurricular Activities On Student Achievement And Success, Timothy J. Means Jan 1991

The Effects Of Extracurricular Activities On Student Achievement And Success, Timothy J. Means

Graduate Research Papers

"Participation in extracurricular activities at the expense of academic learning time has become an issue in education. Decisions limiting or curtailing these activities are made on the assumption that they interfere with the primary purpose of education. If sound decisions are to be made regarding balance between formal instruction and extracurricular activities, we must determine whether they enhance or hinder learning. In other words, are they an integral part of a meaningful educational curriculum for adolescents, or a superficial distraction from it?" (Haensly, Lupkowski & Edlind, 1986) In 1984, Hall, Rutherford, Hord and Huling reported that the co/extracurriculum, which represents …

Focus Area Four: Providing Continuity Of Service For Highly Mobile Children And Families [Wright], David Wright Jan 1991

Focus Area Four: Providing Continuity Of Service For Highly Mobile Children And Families [Wright], David Wright

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Due to a variety of reasons, families have become increasingly mobile. In many cases, the instability and mobility of families contribute significantly to placing the children at risk of school failure and other problem behaviors. This paper addresses this concept and attempts to identify the extent of the problem in Iowa. Possible solutions include assisting the child in making successful transitions to new school and community environments. An important key is to establish continuity of services and programs between families, schools, and community agencies.

Prefatory Note, Theodore Hovet Jan 1991

Prefatory Note, Theodore Hovet

One of the most consequential results of the past twenty years of feminist theory and literary criticism has been the dismantling of traditional norms of what constitutes the self and individual identity. Carol Gilligan, Mary Field Belenky, and Elizabeth Abel - to name only the most widely read - have demonstrated that the American ideal of developing an individuated, authentic, and autonomous self does not rest on universal psychological and moral principles but is primarily a "fiction" created by masculine discourse.

The following critical essays focus on four of the most memorable individuals in American literature - Isabel Archer from …

Self-Identity And Moral Responsibility In The House Of Mirth, Joan Loslo Jan 1991

Self-Identity And Moral Responsibility In The House Of Mirth, Joan Loslo

Draftings In

In her psychological study of women's development, In a Different Voice, Carol Gilligan writes: ''The essence of moral decision is the exercise of choice and the willingness to accept responsibility for that choice. To the extent that women perceive themselves as having no choice, they correspondingly excuse themselves from the responsibility that decision entails" (67). According to Gilligan, women's perception that they have no choice stems from the belief enforced by society that women are dependent on men for protection, support, and approval. Because of their dependency, women further surrender the initiative of making choices to men. And because …

Isabel Archer's Romantic Identity Quest: Ruin And Realization, Alan Lange Jan 1991

Isabel Archer's Romantic Identity Quest: Ruin And Realization, Alan Lange

Draftings In

I approach The Portrait of a Lady with a decidedly romantic and masculine bias, empathizing with Isabel's aesthetic quest while realizing the futility of it, at least in her circumstances. The Romantic Identity Quest, defined by writers like William Wordsworth and Ralph Waldo Emerson and which has shaped much of Western culture, is based on a male model of personal development. While the quest may appeal to women, its results fulfill strictly masculine expectations of detachment from the Mother figure. Isabel Archer's quest exemplifies the feminine equivalent of the male's traditional romantic trek, but for Isabel there is no sense …

Staging In Carrie's Psychological Development: Does She Or Doesn't She?, Kimberly Muta Jan 1991

Staging In Carrie's Psychological Development: Does She Or Doesn't She?, Kimberly Muta

Draftings In

How does Carrie Meeber, Theodore Dreiser's ''half-equipped little knight" (4) in Sister Carrie (1900), fare from a feminist perspective which favors the psychological development of women into empowered individuals? One critic argues that she "does better for herself than if she had followed a more conventional path," such as marriage and family (Wolstenholme 254). I agree Carrie has gained power. Even if she does not completely develop into an independent woman, she certainly becomes an important and influential one.

Issue Four: Coping With And Addressing Racism In Our Educational Institutions [Clemmons], Deborah Clemmons Jan 1991

Issue Four: Coping With And Addressing Racism In Our Educational Institutions [Clemmons], Deborah Clemmons

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Racism, for the purpose of this position paper, is defined as the systematic exclusion of a group of people based on race. Exclusion means the manipulation of policies, procedures, and structures which cause the miseducation of children of color, limiting their ability to participate effectively in the society. Effective participation in society means the ability to acquire gainful employment and provide for social, psychological, and economic needs.

Issue Four: Coping With And Addressing Racism In Our Educational Institutions [Robinson], Mary Robinson

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

It has been almost 40 years since the 1954 landmark school desegregation case of Brown v. the Board of Education, almost 30 years since the historic 1963 Civil Rights March on Washington and passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Bill, and 20 years since the State of Iowa decided to make major changes in the delivery of education to African-American and other children of color. Even so, on any given day when we tum on the electronic media or read the print media, Americans hear and see a new but somehow familiar account of yet another example of racism in …

The Problem Of Students At Risk, J. V. Eckley Jan 1991

The Problem Of Students At Risk, J. V. Eckley

Graduate Research Papers

A number of national and state groups have issued reports over the years expressing great concern about the number of students who fail to graduate from high school. Their inability to acquire the knowledge, skills., and attitudes needed to become pr9ductive members of American society (Levin, 1986). The most recent of these reports comes from the Council of Chief State School Officers' (1987).

A Communication Perspective On Academic Freedom: Implications For Public Speaking, Ronald C. Arnett Jan 1991

A Communication Perspective On Academic Freedom: Implications For Public Speaking, Ronald C. Arnett

Iowa Journal of Communication

The question explored in this article is "how can the field of Speech Communication, through the introductory course in public speaking, support academic freedom in the classroom?" This article presumes the value and importance of academic freedom for continuation of educational quality in research and classroom instruction. The argument for supporting academic freedom in the beginning public speaking class is grounded in the following examination: (1) a working definition of academic freedom, (2) the rationale for academic freedom, (3) current threats to academic freedom, and (4) the contribution that Speech Communication can make in supporting academic freedom in both philosophical …

Keynote Address [Mary Wilcynski}, Mary Wilcynski

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Let's begin with a bit of imagining. Let's take ourselves back to our own high school experience. Picture yourself when you were 17 years old in the spring of your junior year. What was your hairstyle? A butch cut, a bouffant, long hair, short hair? How about your clothes? Traditional cords and button-down collars, tie-dyed T-shirts and jeans? Did you have a car? What were you involved in at school? Think back for a minute to that spring of your junior year. A major concern might have been getting a date to the prom. Let's keep remembering. Write down your …

Focus Area Two: Increasing Family Involvement In The Child's Development [Boyde], Suzanne Boyde Jan 1991

Focus Area Two: Increasing Family Involvement In The Child's Development [Boyde], Suzanne Boyde

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

I approach the topic of "increasing family involvement" from a personal point of view. I am a parent whose increased involvement in my child's education has been met with responses ranging from appreciation to consternation. My child has a long-standing mental illness which, after the passage of PL 94-142, has often cast his educators and me into what could be described most charitably as an uncomfortable relationship. As with many parents in similar situations, the very symptoms of the disorder which made my child eligible for special education were the rich source of parent conference material throughout his elementary education.

Focus Area Six: Creating Partnerships With The Private Sector To Support Children [Domsic], Valli A. Domsic Jan 1991

Focus Area Six: Creating Partnerships With The Private Sector To Support Children [Domsic], Valli A. Domsic

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

At-risk students need support from every sector of our society. The number of young people who can be considered at risk is increasing steadily. This is not a problem which can be alleviated with a quick fix. We cannot vaccinate our children against the economic, psychological, and social perils of divorce, death, substance abuse, poverty, learning difficulties, and teenage pregnancy.

At best, our society can work together to form a network which provides a supportive structure for all students and particularly those students who are deemed to be at risk. While Iowa's legal definition of at risk clearly defines the …

Small Group Counseling For Stepchildren In Elementary School, Margaret K. Oler Jan 1991

Small Group Counseling For Stepchildren In Elementary School, Margaret K. Oler

Graduate Research Papers

Children who are members of stepfamilies are an increasing segment of our nation's school population, and their numbers may be expected to grow in the next decade (Crosbie-Burnett & Pulvino, 1990). Some demographers predict that as many as one-third of all children born in the 1980s may live with a stepparent before they are 18 (Kantrowitz & Wingert, 1990). A stepchild is defined as a child whose biological parent has remarried or married someone other than the child's other biological parent. Historically school policies and practices have related to students' families with the assumption that all two-parent families were nuclear, …

A Comprehensive Approach To Dropout Prevention Programs, Nancy A. Reising-Prohaska Jan 1991

A Comprehensive Approach To Dropout Prevention Programs, Nancy A. Reising-Prohaska

Graduate Research Papers

Educators have begun to focus on the "third wave" of reform, the prevention of dropouts (Hill, 1987). The first two waves of reform which took place during the 1970 1s and 1980's focused heavily on how to improve teaching--which ultimately led to higher standards in academic performance. These standards, along with a variety of other factors, have increased the population of "potential dropouts." Beck and Muia (1985) agree that the first two reforms had the unintended result of leaving further behind the students most in need of help in meeting higher standards. Therefore, the third reform taking place in the …

Executive Summary, Dave Else Jan 1991

Executive Summary, Dave Else

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

John Dewey said, ''The purpose of education is to allow each individual to come into full possession of his or her personal power." A rapidly growing number of youth in Iowa and across the nation have little hope of capturing their personal power for a variety of reasons. They are students at risk. At risk of ridicule by peers; at risk of failure in school; at risk of being unable to bond with society; at risk of social deprivation; and at risk of never realizing their sense of personal value, worth, and dignity.

Focus Area Five: Improving The School Performance Of All Children [Raschke - 1], Donna B. Raschke Jan 1991

Focus Area Five: Improving The School Performance Of All Children [Raschke - 1], Donna B. Raschke

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Our nation, overshadowed by large scale transportation problems, an over-crowded environment, and a "gloom-and-doom" economic forecast, is consumed by a myriad of issues which compete with education for attention, time, and financial support. Yet, today's youth are clearly the adults of tomorrow and unless basic skills are mastered, these individuals will be a burden to tomorrow's society. While it is easy to cast attention to the masses of failures-at-risk students on the pedagogical merry-go-round- educators must readjust their vision so a myopic orientation is not undertaken. It is absolutely essential we do not lose sight of one of the most …

The Portrayal Of Sexual Abuse In Young Adult Literature, Mary Oelmann Jan 1991

The Portrayal Of Sexual Abuse In Young Adult Literature, Mary Oelmann

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this content analysis was to determine how the characters who are victims of sexual abuse are portrayed in young adult literature. This study examined the characteristics of the child who has been sexually abused, the abuser, and the home structure of the victim.

Eleven novels, published and reviewed since 1980, were analyzed for content. The researcher used standard recommending journals and bibliographies to identify possible novels for analysis. Books selected had a focus on sexual abuse.

The researcher found incest to be the main type of sexual abuse in 64% of the novels. The majority of the …

Issue Five: Expectations And Standards Of Performance For People Of Color In Education [Schmits], Donald Schmits Jan 1991

Issue Five: Expectations And Standards Of Performance For People Of Color In Education [Schmits], Donald Schmits

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

As one explores the number of variables that can possibly affect how or how much any person learns at any one time, the task of finding clarity to make recommendations on standards of performance seems overwhelming. It does not bode well for clarity when Travers (1973), Second Handbook of Research on Teaching concludes there is no empirical relationship between the type of pedagogy and student achievement test scores. Hovighurst, Moorefield, Passow, and Elliott (1967) in The Sixty-Sixth Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education suggest that to describe the "disadvantaged" we need the following groups: (a) Urban …
