The Use Of The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised On A Population Of Diagnosed Bulimic College Women, Diane Ruth Haupt Jan 1992

The Use Of The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised On A Population Of Diagnosed Bulimic College Women, Diane Ruth Haupt

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the WAIS-R profiles of five diagnosed bulimic college women. All of the women are between the ages 18-22. The subjects are undergraduate students at a state university, and attend a university support group for individuals with eating disorders. The intent of this study was to investigate if a small population of bulimic college women could lend themselves to a specific profile for bulimic women. The subjects were given the WAIS-Rand profiles were analyzed by the researcher as well as a supervising School Psychologist and an Intern School Psychologist. The findings of this study concluded that the subjects …

The Relationship Between Actual And Perceived Aerobic Fitness And Self-Concept, Matthew Bruce Green Jan 1992

The Relationship Between Actual And Perceived Aerobic Fitness And Self-Concept, Matthew Bruce Green

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Researchers have suggested that improvements in aerobic fitness lead to improved self-concept (Collingwood, 1972; Folkins & Sime,.1981; Hanson & Nedde, 1974; Hatfield, Vaccaro, & Benedict, 1985; Hilyer & Mitchell, 1979; McGowan, Jarman, & Pedersen, 1974; Percy, Dziuban, & Martin, 1981; Schumaker, Small, & Wood, 1986). It has yet to be determined, however, how aerobic fitness is linked to positive self-concept. Other researchers have found that perceptions of physical fitness are correlated with self-concept (Leonardson, 1977; Riley, 1983; Young, 1985). Perceptions of aerobic fitness and how it relates to self-concept, however, have yet to be specifically studied. Using measures of self-concept, …

A Survey Of Consumer Satisfaction In Residential Treatment Centers In Iowa, David Allen Gates Jan 1992

A Survey Of Consumer Satisfaction In Residential Treatment Centers In Iowa, David Allen Gates

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The expressed satisfaction of youth in placement in residential treatment centers (RTCs) has not been utilized for maximum benefit. A survey of the consumer's satisfaction with the programs in which they were placed was conducted. Eight of 18 treatment centers participated with a total of 65 surveys completed. Youth ages 12 to 17 in placement in RTCs in Iowa, were randomly selected to respond to 10 questions regarding their level of satisfaction with the program at the center in which they were placed. In general the youth were satisfied with the programs and the staff with whom they worked. They …

The Inventory Of Negative Thoughts In Response To Pain And The Pain Cognition List: Norms And Psychometric Properties Of Two Measures Of Pain Cognition, Timothy John Haines Jan 1992

The Inventory Of Negative Thoughts In Response To Pain And The Pain Cognition List: Norms And Psychometric Properties Of Two Measures Of Pain Cognition, Timothy John Haines

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Inventory of Negative Thoughts in Response to Pain (INTRP) and the Pain Cognition List (PCL) are two instruments recently developed to assess pain patients ' cognitions. Although both measures appear to be psychometrically sound, the reliability and validity of these measures have received inadequate attention. The norms and psychometric properties of both measures were investigated in a nonclinical college population. For each measure, items loading on the extracted factors differed somewhat for the normative samples. Thus, the factor structures of both inventories were investigated, using principal components factor analysis. Satisfactory internal consistency estimates were obtained for each factor scale …

Influence Of Physical Fitness Level On Susceptibility To Tts As Measured By Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions, Lisa Renee Battani Jan 1992

Influence Of Physical Fitness Level On Susceptibility To Tts As Measured By Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions, Lisa Renee Battani

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Recent research suggests that physical fitness level may influence hearing sensitivity to noise (Ismail et al., 1973; Manson, Alessio, Huchinson, & Cristell, 1992). Frequency-specific changes in hearing acuity resulting from noise overexposure have been detected in human subjects using distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) (Whitehead, Lonsbury-Martin, & Martin, 1992). A decrease in DPOAE amplitude was reported at frequencies at which behavioral thresholds were reduced following a noise exposure (Harris, 1990; Lonsbury-Martin & Martin, 1990; Martin, Probst, & Lonsbury-Martin, 1990). The purposes of this study were to: 1. Examine the relationship between physical fitness level and susceptibility to a temporary noise-induced …

Anorexia Nervosa: A Family Systems Perspective, Mary Tonkin Jan 1991

Anorexia Nervosa: A Family Systems Perspective, Mary Tonkin

Graduate Research Papers

Anorexia Nervosa is primarily a disorder of the adolescent female. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-111-R) (American Psychiatric Association, 1987), the age of onset is usually early to late adolescence (12-18), although it can range from prepuberty to the early 30s (rare) with a gender-specific psychopathology of 95% female. The cardinal feature of anorexia is the relentless pursuit of thinness, often leading to life-threatening weight loss. This pursuit of thinness becomes associated with intense fears about eating, gaining weight, getting fat, and losing control over food intake. A mortality rate between 5% and 18% is …

Benefits Of Preschool On At-Risk Student Achievement, Marilyn L. Ward Jan 1991

Benefits Of Preschool On At-Risk Student Achievement, Marilyn L. Ward

Graduate Research Papers

Historically, education has been a vehicle by which individuals improved their chances for a more productive and personally satisfying life. When the studies of the effects of early childhood education began in the 1960s, the basic question under investigation was, "Does preschool education make a difference in the lives of children?" Fears at that time were that preschool would be harmful to the development of children and to their relationship with their families.

Issue Four: Coping With And Addressing Racism In Our Educational Institutions [Jackson], Clemmye Jackson

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

No other institution has held more promise for Black Americans than education. From the beginning, Blacks have always believed in education for themselves and for their children; and from the beginning, education has been the most denied institution. Even the abolitionists of the 1800s doubted that Blacks were educable in the true sense of the word. Thus, Black literacy was far less a priority than the move westward and the search for raw materials to aid the Industrial Revolution. Both the Southerner and the Northerner agreed that an educated Black would be a rebellious and dissatisfied Black, unacceptable in either …

Peer Coaching And The Role Of The Principal, Scott Dwayne Cakerice Jan 1991

Peer Coaching And The Role Of The Principal, Scott Dwayne Cakerice

Graduate Research Papers

The 1980s were subjected to pressures for educational reform. Many of these pressures were in direct relationship with the publication of "A Nation at Risk" in 1983. The preparation and training of teachers received the most attention in the reform movement. Many state agencies implemented new programs such as merit pay and career ladders. Today, another wave of reform is underway. The emphasis is now focused on restructuring schools. Educational leaders are now interested in improving the teaching profession. The leaders of state agencies and administrators want environments that help teachers and students grow to the greatest extent possible. This …
