The Address Of The President: Science And Progress, R. B. Mcclenon Jan 1940

The Address Of The President: Science And Progress, R. B. Mcclenon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Science and human welfare have always risen and fallen together. We find this generalization borne out in all recorded history, and even farther back in the dim horizons of prehistory. From the first attempts at counting and measuring, observation of the precision of the periodic recurrence of the seasons, forging of metal tools and weapons, domestication of animals, planting and harvesting of crops, we see that the slow advance of the status of man in his world has been accompanied or even preceded by the advance in science. In the earlier stages, of course, we find art, culture, and the …

Exponential Operators, Fred Robertson Jan 1940

Exponential Operators, Fred Robertson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Introduction. The non-commutative operational formula Dx = xD + 1, where D = d/dx, is well known. The difficulty of determining the order of the operations x and D in a function f (x, D) retarded the use of operative functions. Bourlet1 was the first to discover a way to express an operative function, f(x, D) such that the operations with D always precede those with x. Thus his operators obey the laws of algebra and their operational meaning is unique.

A Note On A Bolzano Function, Marian E. Daniells Jan 1940

A Note On A Bolzano Function, Marian E. Daniells

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At a meeting of the Bohemian philosophical society in December 1921 Dr. Jasek reported the discovery among the papers of Bernhard Bolzano of a manuscript in which is described the construction of a continuous non-differentiable function. This function was devised more than thirty years before Weierstrass constructed his now well-known function. But while Weierstrass proved that his function possessed a derivative at no point, Bolzano showed the non-differentiability of his function only at a countable set of points everywhere dense. It is possible however to prove that the Bolzano function possesses a derivative at no point of the interval.

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Mathematical Versus Physical Solutions In Problem Solving In College Physics, C. J. Lapp Jan 1940

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Mathematical Versus Physical Solutions In Problem Solving In College Physics, C. J. Lapp

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An experiment has been conducted in an attempt to determine if there is a significant difference between the achievements of two matched groups of students each having differential treatment with respect to problem solving as measured by a standard final examination. The Physical Solution method gave unquestionably statistically significant results for the upper one-third of the groups. There was no significant difference in the low group which fact tended to hide a small but significant difference from the whole group.

The Philosophy Of Science, H. T. Davis Jan 1939

The Philosophy Of Science, H. T. Davis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A few months ago I sat at a banquet in a room of mirrors. The group of guests communicated with one another by spoken words. But as I sat and looked down the corridor of reflected images of ourselves, I could not help but feel that a vision of the great past of the human race was presented to my eye. As far as one could see, a vast assemblage of human forms was visible and I felt that in this little instant of the present time we were accompanied by the shadows of all those who had lived before …

Thermal Stresses In An Isosceles Right-Tri-Angular Plate With Pinned Edges, D. L. Holl Jan 1939

Thermal Stresses In An Isosceles Right-Tri-Angular Plate With Pinned Edges, D. L. Holl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The object of this paper is two-fold: (1) to show that in certain cases of simply supported plates, the problem of thermal stresses due to unequal surface temperatures is equivalent to a membrane problem under normal surface pressure; and (2) to give some results for an isosceles right-triangular plate.

Iowa's Contribution To American Men Of Science, H. E. Zabel Jan 1939

Iowa's Contribution To American Men Of Science, H. E. Zabel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The latest edition of the Biographical Directory of Scientists lists 2623 who are now in Iowa or were formerly here. For every twenty-one of the present North American scientists, two are or were Iowans. Of these Iowans, 1110 were born in Iowa. Only six states have a larger number of native scientists. Of the outstanding or "starred" scientists, fifty-nine are native Iowans, a number exceeded by only five states. There is a native Iowa scientist for every 2275 of Iowa's present population, a ratio exceeded only by two states, each with a much smaller population, namely, Vermont and Utah.
