An Experiment In The Teaching Of Industrial Physics, M. E. Graber Jan 1938

An Experiment In The Teaching Of Industrial Physics, M. E. Graber

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

While we as teachers of engineering physics comparing ourselves with ourselves and grading objective tests of many types and stripes are inclined to think that our teaching and student product are satisfactory, there may be criteria which our instruction is not meeting. Impressed with this possibility I have made an analysis of my findings obtained from interviews with my own students, deans of engineering schools and engineers in the practice of their profession. The results of these studies are definite and specific.

Fundamental Dimensions And Electrical Units, John A. Eldridge Jan 1938

Fundamental Dimensions And Electrical Units, John A. Eldridge

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Proposition: What dimensions and how many are fundamental is a matter of choice, custom and convenience, not of logical necessity. Limitation: This does not deal with how many and what fundamental entities are required to build a universe; it is simply a question of mensuration; how many and what independent dimensions shall (must) we use to express physical quantities unambiguously, and to make physical equations balance.

Purposive Teaching Of High School Physics, Simeon M. Hickman Jan 1938

Purposive Teaching Of High School Physics, Simeon M. Hickman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The science of teaching High School Physics is primarily a consideration of the physical world in its relationship to life. It is generally accepted that the fundamental objectives of the Physics course are twofold. First: to give the student a clear understanding of the theories, laws, and principles of Physics as set forth in the high school course of study. Second: to develop certain mental habits fundamental to scientific thinking. However, these two objectives are not sufficient if the subject is to be taught in its broader sense. It is equally important that the student shall come in contact with …

Current Views With Reference To The Nature Of Liquid Structure, G. W. Stewart Jan 1937

Current Views With Reference To The Nature Of Liquid Structure, G. W. Stewart

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This is a report of progress in the study of the structure of liquids, analogous to the crystal structure of solids. Prins has given a mathematical treatment wherein the crystal structure is approximated to an expressed degree of probability. Bernal has made this treatment more general. These efforts advance the subject by giving models capable of mathematical description. Experiments in Raman effect continue to show that the intermolecular forces in the liquid are much like those in the crystal solid. The study of glasses shows their crystallite structure and emphasizes the difference between glass and liquid. These results, as others, …

The Decomposition Of 4(Xp-1)/(X-1). Ii, Cornelius Gouwens Jan 1937

The Decomposition Of 4(Xp-1)/(X-1). Ii, Cornelius Gouwens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

If 4X = 4(xp - 1) / (x - 1) where p is an odd prime then 4X= Y2 - (- 1) p-1 / 2 pZ2, Y and Z being polynomials in x with integral coefficients. These decompositions for 100< p< 200 were given by the author in the Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science, 43: 255-262. This work has now been extended to values of p< 225. The decompositions are given herewith. For all decompositions Y is a polynomial of degree (p - 1) / 2 and Z a polynomial of degree (p- 3) / 2. The coefficients only are given in each case first for Y, then for Z.

The Zeeman Effect On The Hyperfine Structure Of Optically Excited Mercury Resonance Radiation, E. Hobart Collins Jan 1937

The Zeeman Effect On The Hyperfine Structure Of Optically Excited Mercury Resonance Radiation, E. Hobart Collins

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Optically excited mercury resonance radiation was used as a light source to provide the sharpest possible hyperfine structure lines of Hg. 2537. This light source was placed in magnetic fields varying from zero to 2000 gauss. A lummer plate and a camera with a special quartz lens was used to secure the Zeeman hyperfine structure patterns. The patterns were analyzed by the newly installed micro photometer of the State University of Iowa. The measurements and theoretical interpretations are given.
