A Study Of Auditory Discrimination In Lower Elementary Children, Gloria Joan Bahr Jan 1965

A Study Of Auditory Discrimination In Lower Elementary Children, Gloria Joan Bahr

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Verbal communication, i.e., speech, is the only unequivocal "human" trait. It is a process of several dimensions which has been the object of many investigations. Auditory discrimination seems to be an essential element in the process of verbal communication and has received much attention, both in the area of normal speech and in speech pathology. Van Riper has suggested that auditory discrimination is both a goal and a technique in speech retraining. He believes that a child with a sound substitution may be unaware that any substitution has occurred. Because the auditory sensations of the correct and incorrect sound may …

An Investigation Of Social Science Materials That May Be Used As Background Reading In A Literature Program, Allan F. Gates Jan 1965

An Investigation Of Social Science Materials That May Be Used As Background Reading In A Literature Program, Allan F. Gates

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Today, as perhaps at no time previously, the English department of the American high school has come in for scrutiny and alteration. The most recent convention of Iowa English teachers (April, 1965) found new programs in literature to be "exciting," new approaches to writing "exciting," new developments in advanced classes "exciting". Innovation and renovation are a part of the scene. As many English teachers are beginning to learn, changes in curriculum and in text materials and in approach to the subject are coming so rapidly that no one has had time to assess the changes or to draw any concrete …

A Critical Survey Of Recently Published Beginning Piano Methods, Margretta Denouden Jan 1964

A Critical Survey Of Recently Published Beginning Piano Methods, Margretta Denouden

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Pedagogy and materials greatly influence the results of all teaching. Changing cultural standards bring changing pedagogical techniques. Piano playing is no longer a luxury for the talented few, but rather a musical activity in which many participate. Today's piano teacher needs a method that achieves quick mastery because many attractive activities compete with piano practice for children's time.

General Semantics At Work: A Handbook For High School Teachers Of English, Georgia Burge Jan 1962

General Semantics At Work: A Handbook For High School Teachers Of English, Georgia Burge

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this handbook, General Semantics at Work, is fourfold: (1) to encourage the teacher of high school English to place as much emphasis upon improving the language attitudes of his students as upon improving their language skills, on the theory that the attitudes will determine the ultimate quality of the skills; (2) to summarize the system of general semantics, which its originator, Alfred Korzybski, chooses to call "a discipline," because it not only explains but trains; (3) to discuss the nature of the three components of language attitudes; namely, (a) the language itself, the tool of the communication …

Correlates Of Achievement In A Veterinary Medicine Curriculum, Thomas E. Hannum Jan 1960

Correlates Of Achievement In A Veterinary Medicine Curriculum, Thomas E. Hannum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A correlational study was made of test scores and achievement of Veterinary Medicine students who graduated in the spring of 1959 from Iowa State University. Cumulative grade point averages were obtained at the time of graduation and correlated with selection data obtained at the time of admission to the College of Veterinary Medicine in the fall of 1955. These data included: pre-veterinary grade point averages; interest scores on the Strong Vocational Interest Blank; Veterinary Aptitude Test scores; American Council on Educational Psychological Examination (College Edition), Quantitative and Linguistic scores; and numerical ratings made by a faculty committee during screening interviews …

The Impact Of Usage Studies Upon Recent Grammar Texts, Donald Keith Chiquet Jan 1960

The Impact Of Usage Studies Upon Recent Grammar Texts, Donald Keith Chiquet

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study is to show to what degree writers of grammar texts have been influenced by the controversy over usage as a criterion of grammatical acceptability. More specifically, the problem is to show the degree of agreement between textbook writers and liberal grammarians. This information will be used to determine the degree to which textbooks are liberal or traditional. If the texts are liberal, it may be considered that the impact of liberal grammarians upon textbook writers has been great. If these grammar texts are not liberal, or if they are no more liberal than they were …

Vocabulary And Achievement In Developmental Psychology, Don C. Charles, John A. Bath Jan 1958

Vocabulary And Achievement In Developmental Psychology, Don C. Charles, John A. Bath

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between achievement in an introductory course in developmental psychology and knowledge of word-meanings in that area. It is a preliminary study, to be expanded as additional data are collected. Several studies exist which show a significant relationship between general vocabulary and college grade-point average, usually the first term average. The studies of Bernard (1), Bolton (2), and Templeman (4) are typical. Levine (3) developed a psychological vocabulary test in analogy form at the University of Minnesota which is used for both selection and evaluation in graduate and undergraduate psychology classes …

Wonderlic, Wesman P.C.T., And A.C.E.: A Comparison Of Three Group Intelligence Tests, Charles F. Haner Jan 1954

Wonderlic, Wesman P.C.T., And A.C.E.: A Comparison Of Three Group Intelligence Tests, Charles F. Haner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There are many tests on the market purporting to measure general intelligence. They are used for a variety of purposes with many differing groups. Examination of them reveals so much diversity in the sorts of items they contain that one wonders how the tests can be measuring the same thing, i.e. general intelligence. Several tests have purported to break general intelligence into a verbal and a numerical factor. The ACE has long yielded such scores. More recently the Wesman PCT has found use in industry as a short intelligence test giving both a verbal and numerical score. Gerken (3), noting …

Q And L Difference Scores On The A.C.E. Test, Martin F. Fritz Jan 1954

Q And L Difference Scores On The A.C.E. Test, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Those who have used the American Council on Education Psychological Examination (A.C.E.) will, no doubt, have noted that in a number of cases there is considerable difference between the Quantitative (Q) and the Linguistic (L) centile ranks. This report is concerned with an investigation to determine in a limited way, what significance there might be in the disparity of such scores. In the fall of 1953, 2500 new students entered Iowa State College for whom scores on the A.C.E. were available. From this group, all cases were selected where the Q and the L centile ranks differed by 50 or …

"Verbal Factor" And "Number Factor"A Study Of Two Tests, John E. Williams, C. D'A. Gerken Jan 1952

"Verbal Factor" And "Number Factor"A Study Of Two Tests, John E. Williams, C. D'A. Gerken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The psychologist working as a counselor in a student personnel office has come to depend upon psvchometric data to sharpen the reliability and validity of his judgments. Although he is cautious about trusting test labels, and well aware of the unwritten caveat accompanying each test manual, every once in a while the counselor may be brought up short by the summation effect of discrepancies he notices in day-to-day work with test data. The present study had its origin in just this fashion. It grew out of attempts of counselors to extract the maximum amount of meaningful information from test data.

Relation Of The Fritz-Neidt Practical Policy Test To Freshman: Entrance Tests, Martin F. Fritz Jan 1950

Relation Of The Fritz-Neidt Practical Policy Test To Freshman: Entrance Tests, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Previous investigations, reported to the Psychology Section of the Iowa Academy of Science, have been concerned with the development of a test designed to measure cynicism and idealism. Since the nature of the items used, the theory of the construction, the manner of administration, and the method of scoring have already been described (see references), no attempt will be made to consider these details in this paper.

Homogeneity Of Behavior Indicated From The Spearman-Brown Prophecy Formula, Charles O. Neidt Jan 1949

Homogeneity Of Behavior Indicated From The Spearman-Brown Prophecy Formula, Charles O. Neidt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The reliability of a test is usually defined as the consistency with which a test measures whatever it measures, the consistency being indicated by the correlation between two administrations of the same test or between equivalent forms. Whenever it has not been feasible to administer the test twice, or whenever full-length equivalent forms have not been available, the procedure usually followed has been that of making two synthetic tests by scoring the odd- and even-numbered items separately, or by scoring two randomly-drawn lists of items. Dividing the test in this manner results in obtaining a correlation between two forms which …

An Outline Of Iowa Archaeology - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, Charles R. Keyes Jan 1941

An Outline Of Iowa Archaeology - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, Charles R. Keyes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This opportunity of addressing yon on the subject of the archaeology of Iowa is appreciated for very special reasons. The Iowa Academy of Science gave me my first public hearing on this subject in 1920, just twenty-one years ago, at the meeting of the Academy in Iowa City. It was a member of this Academy also, Professor Robert Wylie, of the University of Iowa, who encouraged me with the first spoken word. Furthermore, unknown to me at the time, Professor Benjamin F. Shambaugh, Superintendent of The State Historical Society of Iowa at Iowa City, had sent one of his editors …

The Reliability Of An Abbreviated Test Of Alertness, Charles R. Rostron, A. R. Lauer Jan 1939

The Reliability Of An Abbreviated Test Of Alertness, Charles R. Rostron, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In certain types of work a short test of mental alertness is quite important: (1) because of the lack of time and means required to administer a full length test, and (2) because of the motivation of the examinees. The Otis Self-Administering Test has met this demand to some extent but it implies a certain amount of education and takes at least 20 minutes. A survey of test materials indicated some coml1ination of the Army Alpha and Beta tests had possibilities for this type of measuring instrument. A research was undertaken to adapt some of these types of materials to …

An Analysis Of The Implications And Reference Of The Word "Intelligence", C. E. Tuthill Jan 1938

An Analysis Of The Implications And Reference Of The Word "Intelligence", C. E. Tuthill

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The meaning of the word "intelligence'' is seen to vary from one context to another. The term "multiordinal" has been applied by Korzybski to refer to words the meaning of which is indicated by the context and depends upon the order of abstraction involved. That the meaning of the word "intelligence" is many-valued or multiordinal may be seen from some of the following quotations taken from the writings of leading men in the field.

The Relation Of Aptitude Test Data To Fall Quarter Grades - 998 Cases - Fall 1931, Lyle K. Henry Jan 1932

The Relation Of Aptitude Test Data To Fall Quarter Grades - 998 Cases - Fall 1931, Lyle K. Henry

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This is a further study of the scholastic aptitude test which is given to entering students at Iowa State College. Research on this problem has been presented before the Academy of Science from time to time. Vance, in 1925, reported the correlations of parts of the test to quarter grades. In 1931, Cox, reporting on a revised form of the test, showed that tests 2 and 6, that is, tests on arithmetical reasoning and artificial language were most closely related with abilities in Chemistry, English and Mathematics as required of Freshman Engineers at Iowa State College.

The Use Of The Individual Parts Of The Aptitude Test For Predicting Success Of Students, Gertrude M. Cox Jan 1931

The Use Of The Individual Parts Of The Aptitude Test For Predicting Success Of Students, Gertrude M. Cox

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Iowa State College Aptitude Test is composed of seven parts or sub-tests. These sub-tests have been used in predicting the success of the students during their first quarter in college.

A Statistical Study Of Industrial Science Students Of The Class Of 1926, Gertrude M. Cox Jan 1930

A Statistical Study Of Industrial Science Students Of The Class Of 1926, Gertrude M. Cox

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was carried through with three main objectives in view, 1. To find the relationship between the Iowa State College Aptitude Test (as a whole and in parts), the social and memory tests, work done in high school, and work done in college. 2. To determine the percentage of students; (a) who remained in college (b) who were dropped from college either by their own request or by the request of the scholarship committee. 3. To see if it is possible to determine which high school students should be allowed to enter Iowa State College.

A Sound Wave Analysis Of Tlingit Speech, Ray E. Miller Jan 1930

A Sound Wave Analysis Of Tlingit Speech, Ray E. Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The sound waves from a phonograph record of a Tlingit Indian's speech were photographed on the Metfessel strobo-photograph. The curves on the strobo-photograph film were traced onto a reduced musical-scale chart by means of an especially designed transcribing machine. The analysis, which was limited to the frequency of vibration and duration of the sounds, was made under two main headings: (1) intervals, and (2) intonations.

Do Students Grades In Physics Correlate With Grades In Other Subjects?, Alice Neff Jan 1926

Do Students Grades In Physics Correlate With Grades In Other Subjects?, Alice Neff

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

If we compare students' grades in physics with grades in other subjects, we find figures which are worth some notice as they reveal interesting facts. Using the grades of 87 of Drake University College physics students, I find that their average grade in other subjects and their physics grades give a correlation of 90%. The means of both the physics and average grade are almost a C+.

The Iowa State College Reasoning Test, Thomas F. Vance Jan 1926

The Iowa State College Reasoning Test, Thomas F. Vance

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In order to arrive at the point of this paper on the subject, "The Iowa State College Reasoning Test" it is necessary to describe briefly the other tests of which it is one in the series. The psychological test which has been given this year to the Freshman class of Iowa State College is a modified Alpha. The Alpha was chosen as a basis on which to construct a new form for the reason that it has given consistently higher correlations than it has been possible to secure with any other test. In the modified form, Arithmetic, the Synonym and …

Indian Quartzite Quarry Near Hot Springs, South Dakota, Paul Rowe Jan 1924

Indian Quartzite Quarry Near Hot Springs, South Dakota, Paul Rowe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Bottle Mountain east of Hot Springs, South Dakota is the traditional last fortress of the Indian tribes occupying the region. On the southwest face of this mountain there is evidence that the Indians removed a considerable amount of the rock best fitted for making arrow points. There is considerable loose talus, apparently rejected blocks, about the foot of the slope at this place. Elsewhere there is little talus. Some of the joints have been widened into small caves by the continual "fracturing" of the most desirable rock for making artifacts.
