A Slide-Tape Introduction To A Unit On The American Indian, Linda L. Jones

Graduate Research Papers

In order to develop a curriculum which is more relevant to student interests and the school's needs, the librarian and teacher have certain duties to perform. The teacher defines the objectives desired; the librarian provides and develops media which achieve these bjectives. Therefore, the librarian and the Instructional Media Center are the best sources not only for commercially produced materials hut for those which the school produces. Possibly the most effective area to produce materials would be in units not covered adequately by the textbook, in this case, the American Indian.

The Fighting Word Doctrine From Chaplinsky To Brown, Franklyn S. Haiman Jan 1972

The Fighting Word Doctrine From Chaplinsky To Brown, Franklyn S. Haiman

Iowa Journal of Communication

On April 11, 1971, nineteen-year old Robert Vitek of Shaker Heights, Ohio, was stopped and ticketed for speeding by University Heights Police Sergeant Jay McKenna. While the officer was filling out his ticket, Vitek called McKenna a "pig." Judge Manuel Rocker of the Shaker Heights Municipal Court later found Vitek guilty of abusing a police officer, fined him $100, and sentenced him to spend three hours in a pigsty so that he might learn to "distinguish the difference between a pig and a police officer."1 Since the young man in question apparently was not discontented with his sentence, this …

A Study Of The Variable Of Black Dialect As It Affects The Performance Of Black Children On A Speech-Sound Discrimination Test, Adeline Cheryl Alderson Jan 1972

A Study Of The Variable Of Black Dialect As It Affects The Performance Of Black Children On A Speech-Sound Discrimination Test, Adeline Cheryl Alderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study investigated the variable of Black Dialect as it affected performance of a black population on a standardized speech-sound discrimination test. Forty-four black preschool children ranging in age from four years, one month through five years, one month served as subjects. Test tapes used for presentation of the test were the Standard English test tape included in the speech-sound discrimination test pack and a Black Dialect test tape recorded by a lay talker. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups: Group I subjects received the speech-sound discrimination test in Standard English on Trial 1 and in Black …

Methodological Processes In A Sociolinguistic Problem, James C. Day

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The scope of this paper is methodological. It is concerned with the procedures involved in collecting data within the guidelines of a sociolinguistic framework. The data have been collected and are contained in tapes which are on file in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at the University of Northern Iowa. The study was designed to be generational in the sense that parent and child form a generation. Black children and their parents were contacted for their willingness to cooperate in the study. The purposes and procedures to be used were explained to them and they then indicated whether …

White Teachers And Black Students: A Problem For The Speech Discipline, Edward L. Mcglone, Loren J. Anderson Jan 1971

White Teachers And Black Students: A Problem For The Speech Discipline, Edward L. Mcglone, Loren J. Anderson

Iowa Journal of Communication

In our highly verbal society, the ability to communicate orally is fundamental to economic, social, and academic achievement. Only recently has American education, aided by government and foundation support, sought to identify and cope with the communication problems of economically disadvantaged black students. The findings of four recent commissions--the Haryou studies in New York, the McCone panel in Los Angeles, the national Coleman commission, and the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders--all have contained the observation that intensive concentration on verbal skills is needed in black urban schools; because as the latter Commission's report put it, the lack of such …

Rhetoric: Discovery And Achievement, Cal M. Logue Jan 1971

Rhetoric: Discovery And Achievement, Cal M. Logue

Iowa Journal of Communication

Recent writings on the function of rhetoric range from a limiting proposal of "advocacy"1 to the challenging premise of "adapting ideas to the people and people to ideas."2 Probably one should simply accept the fact that rhetoric means many things to many people. Inherent to the belief of most theorists, however, is the assumption that without such subjects as dialectic and philosophy " ... rhetoric is blind, for it has not truth."3 Historically rhetoric has been given the servant's role of persuasion. Debate has been over what are responsible and effective means of persuasion: sophistry, truth, style, …

A Comparative Study Of The Language Of Disadvantaged White Kindergarten Children And Middle-Class White Kindergarten Children, Nadine J. Harman Jan 1971

A Comparative Study Of The Language Of Disadvantaged White Kindergarten Children And Middle-Class White Kindergarten Children, Nadine J. Harman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Much of the research directed towards the study of poverty indicates that low socio-economic or "disadvantaged" children are often found to lack adequate language skills. However. a review of the various studies reveals that many of these investigations have been limited to Negro children and to children living in large cities. There appears to be a lack of information in regard to disadvantaged white children from small towns. In addition, many investigators have failed to consider the role of sex factors in the development of language skills. The purpose of the present study was two-fold (1) to compare the language …

On The Trail Of The Decadent Polyglot, W. F. Hollander Jan 1970

On The Trail Of The Decadent Polyglot, W. F. Hollander

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

At the risk of beating a dead horse to death, I desire to add my lick. Students are not adequately trained to communicate in science, and the objective-type test is not helping. When linguistic fluency is equated with drooling in one's beard, and semantics is some sort of erotic deviation, one must not be surprised to learn that etymology is the study of incests. Most of the kids have become aware that mini means small, and that lunar means moon, and we should be grateful for such small advances, but the slippage in other areas is less cause for a …

A Longitudinal Study Of The Interests Of Veterinarians, Susan I. Ballou, Jonathan E. Alsip, Thomas E. Hannum Jan 1970

A Longitudinal Study Of The Interests Of Veterinarians, Susan I. Ballou, Jonathan E. Alsip, Thomas E. Hannum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The newly-revised SVIB was restandardized on 362 members of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. Ninety-eight of these veterinarians in this 1966 criterion group were also members of the 1949 criterion groups when the SVIB veterinarian scale was first established. The answer sheets from both the 1949 and the 1966 criterion groups were scored by the newly devised scoring key and a comparison made of score changes over this period. In addition the response-choice frequencies to the items common to both the old and the new SVIB by the longitudinal group were determined and significant shifts were noted and reported in …

The Effects Of Training On The Acquisition And Retention Of Listening Skills, Bethlyn Christine Broad Jan 1970

The Effects Of Training On The Acquisition And Retention Of Listening Skills, Bethlyn Christine Broad

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A survey of the definitions of listening demonstrated the confusion that exists regarding the nature of listening. From these definitions a composite definition of listening was formulated. The common factors in these definitions defined listening as an act involving perception of communication and one or more through processes. Despite the lack of a precise definition, an increasing number of courses are offered which purport to teach effective listening. These courses are based on the empirical studies which revealed that listening can be taught. However, this study discovered an equally large number of studies which showed that listening cannot be taught. …

FonologíA Y FonéTica Segmental Del EspañOl, José Luis Freire Jan 1970

FonologíA Y FonéTica Segmental Del EspañOl, José Luis Freire

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Of primary concern in this thesis was the description of segmental sounds in Spanish. Special care was taken to maintain an inductive approach to the problem. It was felt that the adherence to this type of method would facilitate the rapid yet thorough understanding of a particular linguistic point by the student, by compelling him to formulate a generalization after studying a body of carefully selected data.

The Field Of Speech, Douglas Ehninger Jan 1969

The Field Of Speech, Douglas Ehninger

Iowa Journal of Communication

Teachers of speech, even more perhaps than teachers in other field, occasionally need to stop and take stock. What, after all, is this subject or discipline that we profess? On what basis does its claim to independence rest? What is the proper business of a department of speech? What, ideally, should the study of speech entail? What areas of investigation and research are our special property? In what ways does training in speech contribute to a liberal education?

A Comparative Study Of Three Different Approaches To Beginning Reading Comprehension: Ita, Programmed Reader, And Basal Reader, Helen Ferrier Ristau Jan 1969

A Comparative Study Of Three Different Approaches To Beginning Reading Comprehension: Ita, Programmed Reader, And Basal Reader, Helen Ferrier Ristau

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purposes of this study were to compare the effectiveness of three specific approaches to beginning reading for teaching reading comprehension in the schools of a midwestern community: ITA, Programmed Reader, and Basal Reader. The Reading: Stories or reading comprehension scores on the Metropolitan Achievement Tests were used to compare: (1) the overall effectiveness of teaching reading comprehension under the three approaches, and (2) the effectiveness of the three approaches for particular types of learners. The data was analyzed according to the following factors: sex, M.A., socioeconomic status, and maturity level to determine which approach is best for any of …

A Comparison Of Results Of Two Methods Of Teaching Reading In The First Grade, Melvin Wayne Thurston Jan 1969

A Comparison Of Results Of Two Methods Of Teaching Reading In The First Grade, Melvin Wayne Thurston

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An examination of the grade-equivalent scores attained in vocabulary and reading comprehension by third-grade pupils at Hudson Community School on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills over the preceding four-year period revealed that many of the pupils were seriously retarded in reading. During this period a total of 210 third-grade pupils were tested. Thirty-one per cent of these pupils scored one or more years below the norm for Iowa third-grade pupils in vocabulary, and the same level of retardation was true in reading comprehension for twenty-seven per cent of these pupils.

Most of these pupils had been taught beginning reading …

Guides To Teaching Concepts Of Music For The Self-Contained-Classroom Teacher At The Primary Level, C. Elaine Kinsinger Clark Jan 1967

Guides To Teaching Concepts Of Music For The Self-Contained-Classroom Teacher At The Primary Level, C. Elaine Kinsinger Clark

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was initiated to deal with a problem faced by the teacher of the self-contained elementary classroom. She cannot be equally well-prepared to teach all subjects. Music frequently is poorly taught or neglected by the teacher who feels musically inadequate. It was the purpose of this study to provide materials for these teachers so that they might teach music more effectively.

The English Second Person Pronoun: Its History And Its Significance In Shakespeare’S Richard Ii, Mary Janet De Jong Conley Jan 1967

The English Second Person Pronoun: Its History And Its Significance In Shakespeare’S Richard Ii, Mary Janet De Jong Conley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The English language has undergone many changes since its evolution from the Teutonic dialects. It has become simplified in many ways; one area of simplification is in the second person pronoun. Originally nine different forms of the Old English pronoun of address appeared, while today only three {you, your, yours) remain. Although ambiguity can and does result from only one form in the nominative and objective case (i.e., whether you is singular or plural in reference), the English-speaking people have reduced the pronoun to the same nominative and objective form as a means of linguistic economy. The problem of ambiguity …
