The Kashmir Conflict: A Geographical Perspective, Razia Babar
The Kashmir Conflict: A Geographical Perspective, Razia Babar
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The object of this study is to examine Kashmir as a case of a territorial dispute. The first chapter surveys Kashmir's physical geography. The prevailing trend of mountain ranges and river valleys is related to historic movement patterns, which in turn are indicative of social, cultural, and economic links of Kashmir with Pakistan and India, and it is noted that contacts have been greater with Pakistan. In the second chapter Kashmir's cultural patterns are described, and regional religious and linguistic groupings are noted. There has been a continuity in these patterns since the second half of the nineteenth century. In …
An Information Processing Approach To Group Performance Of Poetry: Implications For Adaptation And Audience Research, Sandra Highnam
An Information Processing Approach To Group Performance Of Poetry: Implications For Adaptation And Audience Research, Sandra Highnam
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This investigation explores the relationship between a neurological model of information processing and a group performance of poetry. It focuses upon three considerations: construction of a neurological model of information processing, application of this model to group performance of poetry, and implications for adaptation of poetry and audience research.
A neurological model of information processing is constructed which explains perception in terms of the specialized functions of the left and right hemispheres. According to this model, certain aspects of the environment (stimuli) are more efficiently processed by each hemisphere: the left dealing largely with verbal material and the right with …
Prediction Of Reading Achievement Using Conservation Performance, Jann Moser Bowlus
Prediction Of Reading Achievement Using Conservation Performance, Jann Moser Bowlus
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study examined the relationship between reading and Piagetian conservation ability. It was hypothesized that conservation ability would be significantly related to reading achievement and an addition of a conservation measure to a reading readiness measure would significantly improve prediction of reading achievement.
Forty first and second grade children from a northeast Iowa, middle class, urban school district were involved in this study. They were administered conservation tasks from the Concept Assessment Kit-Conservation during the fall of 1977. In the spring of 1978 Ginn reading mastery scores were obtained and Clymer-Barrett reading readiness test scores were gathered from the school …
The Effects Of Language Variables On The Reading Comprehension Of Hearing-Impaired Children, Nancy L. Robbins
The Effects Of Language Variables On The Reading Comprehension Of Hearing-Impaired Children, Nancy L. Robbins
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Hearing-impaired children rarely learn to read well. They suffer no apparent deficit in perceptual skill or basic intelligence. Their difficulty appears to be linguistic in origin. But research on the reading ability of the deaf is inadequate to specify the precise nature of their linguistic disability.
The deaf lack knowledge of English phonology. Current reading instruction programs for them a.re based on the assumption that this is the cause of their reading problems. Recent research indicates, however, that phoneme-grapheme correspondences contribute little to the reading process and that phonics instruction may actually impede learning to read. It is unlikely that …

Language Concept Development In Differentially Educated Deaf Children: The Aural/Oral Versus A Simultaneous Approach, Sheril L. Doughman
Language Concept Development In Differentially Educated Deaf Children: The Aural/Oral Versus A Simultaneous Approach, Sheril L. Doughman
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The present study was designed to compare the understanding of the fifty items on the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts (Boehm, 1971) in three groups of eight children ranging in age from 5-3 to 11-6 years. One group consisted of deaf children who were primarily educated in the aural/oral method (AOM). This approach is said to utilize residual hearing, amplification, speech, and speechreading while signing is discouraged or forbidden. The second group consisted of deaf children who were taught in a simultaneous method approach (SM). Natural gestures, fingerspelling, facial expression, body language, and a signed language system in conjunction with …
A Perceptual Study Of Emotion In Esophageal Speech, Charles Carlisle Ellis
A Perceptual Study Of Emotion In Esophageal Speech, Charles Carlisle Ellis
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study was designed to investigate the perceivability of emotion in esophageal speech. Specifically, the questions under study were: (1) Are naive listeners able to accurately perceive emotional intention from auditory samples of esophageal speech? (2) Are the listeners' judgments of emotion from esophageal speech made with as much confidence as similar judgments made on normal laryngeal speech? A perceptual paradigm was utilized in which listeners made emotion judgments from speech samples of one laryngeal and one esophageal speaker. Two master audiotape recordings were constructed. Each contained a listening corpus of 75 randomly distributed grammatically complete, content-constant sentences. Each audiotape …

A Psycholinguistic Contrastive Analysis Of The Dialogues Between Tom Jones And Partridge And Between Don Quijote And Sancho, Betty Ann Engelkes
A Psycholinguistic Contrastive Analysis Of The Dialogues Between Tom Jones And Partridge And Between Don Quijote And Sancho, Betty Ann Engelkes
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Henry Fielding was greatly interested in the literary works of Cervantes. This interest is reflected in Fielding's writing, especially character development and, to some extent, in his style. There are obvious similarities in thematic content in the dialogues between Tom Jones and Partridge and between Don Quijote and Sancho. There are also obvious similarities in episodes or situations involving these major characters, which are presented and discussed in this thesis. Both major characters, Tom Jones and Don Quijote, leave home to travel with their specific destinations undetermined. Both Tom Jones and Don Quijote have longings for a beautiful woman whom …

The Personal Professional Collections Of French Teachers, Marsha E. Tate
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of the study was to compile a list of books for French teachers for their personal professional collections recommended by good French teachers. The survey instrument, which included an initial list of seventeen recommended books, was sent to French teachers in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois whose students scored first through fifth in the 1975 National French Contest. The researcher assumed that this population, could include some good French teachers.
The Development Of Criteria For Evaluating Junior Premarital Pregnancy Novels, Connie Jo Barto
The Development Of Criteria For Evaluating Junior Premarital Pregnancy Novels, Connie Jo Barto
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to develop criteria that could be used by classroom teachers and media specialists to judge the quality of junior premarital pregnancy novels. A secondary purpose was to demonstrate by means of model critiques how the criteria could be applied. The professional literature reflected five categories of conern relating to junior premarital pregnancy novels: adolescent sexuality, didacticism, sexism, pat solutions, and stereotyped adults. The researcher selected a panel of six experts to comment on the categories of concern and to identify the ten most widely read titles in the genre. The panel included practicing media …

Grammatical Ambiguity In Japanese And English, Joseph Clarc Chryst
Grammatical Ambiguity In Japanese And English, Joseph Clarc Chryst
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
As indicated in the title, the principal topic of this thesis is the concept of grammatical ambiguity. In this thesis, that concept and the concept of function switching rules are identified and defined. Examples of noun phrases from Japanese and English which exhibit grammatical ambiguity are analyzed. Examples of noun phrases in English which necessitate the formulation of function switching rules are provided and discussed. The study is conducted within a generative-transformational analytical framework. Non-generative studies germane to the topic are discussed. The bulk of the example sentences for Japanese come from non-generative sources.
