Cai: The Way To Computer Literacy Through Story Problem Solving On The Microcomputer, Michael Clyde Merchant

Graduate Research Papers

This paper is a review of available studies and literature publi5hed over the past ten years. Its purpose is to suggest the need to use the microcomputer CAI in story problem solving in the elementary school. The literature was reviewed on 1: the cost effectiveness of ii CAI and microcomputers, 2: the need for an instructional format which makes individualization a feasible teaching technique for most teachers in solving story problems, 3: the need for computer literacy as a goal of our educational system, and 4: the effectiveness of CAI in elementary reading, mathematics drill-and-practice, and story problem solving. The Development Of Word Identification-Recognition Strategies With The Language Experience Approach, Dawn Throlson Jan 1981

The Development Of Word Identification-Recognition Strategies With The Language Experience Approach, Dawn Throlson

Graduate Research Papers

The essential nature of reading is the process of obtaining meaning. In order to process meaning, the reader must be able to perform the task of word identification-recognition efficiently. In the reading process, one has available various sources of information: grapho-phonic, semantic, and syntactic cues. Research on miscue analysis indicates that proficient readers are better able to use the three cue systems than less proficient readers. Hence, reading instruction should help students to be aware of and utilize the three cues. To enable beginning readers to use grapho-phonic, semantic, and syntactic cues, they must be provided with opportunities to read …

Implications Of Intervention Studies In The Training Of Piagetian Conservation Tasks, Karen S. Jensen Jan 1981

Implications Of Intervention Studies In The Training Of Piagetian Conservation Tasks, Karen S. Jensen

Graduate Research Papers

Jean Piaget, in his studies of the cognitive development of children, did not address the applications of his theory to reading instruction. Recent research strongly indicates that Piaget's theory applies to education, and especially reading instruction. Reoccuring questions arise from the research: Must children pass through particular stages in which specific skills and operations are acquired before reading is possible and, Is it possible that beginning reading instruction, which now starts earlier in most schools (Robinson, Strickland, & Cullinan, 1977), may be premature for children who have not attained prerequisite cognitive skill levels? The literature review will answer these and …

Intelligence, Intelligence Tests, And Developmental Characteristics Of Three To Six Year Olds: A Review And Critique, Margreta Ellen Hartje Jan 1981

Intelligence, Intelligence Tests, And Developmental Characteristics Of Three To Six Year Olds: A Review And Critique, Margreta Ellen Hartje

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This research had a dual purpose. First it reviewed literature relevant to issues surrounding the construct of intelligence, developmental characteristics of the preschool child, and the measurement of the quantitative and qualitative aspects of preschool development. The review attempted to bridge the gap between the development of and the measurement of intelligence. The second function of the study was to provide a limited review and critique of commercial and non-commercial preschool measurement devices. The tests were categorized as intelligence/cognitive, language, motor, social/adaptive, or tests constructed on the basis of specific developmental theories. Criteria for inclusion centered around the test's usage …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Bilalian Children's Error Pattern On The Ppvt-R, Carole Redfield Coffey Jan 1981

A Qualitative Analysis Of Bilalian Children's Error Pattern On The Ppvt-R, Carole Redfield Coffey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to analyze the errors made by four year old Bilalian (Black) children to the stimuli which comprise the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test - Revised (PPVT-R) in order to generate possible explanations for the.children's preferred ("incorrect") responses in terms of language patterns and reasoning processes. Standardized administration procedures were disregarded; testing with each of the 21 children began with Plate 10 and proceeded until six "misses" occurred within eight consecutive responses. Each error, along with the test publishers' stipulated ("correct") response and a distractor, was queried in an attempt to ascertain the reason for the …

Evaluating The Effect Of A Guided Fantasy Visualization On The Figural And Verbal Originality Of Upper Elementary Students, David B. Windahl

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated a method for stimulating several aspects of short-term creative thinking. It was hypothesized that the figural and verbal originality scores of students receiving a guided fantasy visualization (GFV) would be significantly different from those scores of students not receiving a GFV. Fifty-six children from the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades of Price Laboratory School, Cedar Falls, Iowa, were pre-tested on one figural and one verbal subtest from the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT). After scoring the subtest on the originality scale only, students were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Following a four week interval, …

Application Of Piaget’S Theory Of Cognitive Growth To The Development Of An Interview Protocol And Validation Of A Task To Assess Reasoning Abilities Of College Students, Bruce Edward Perry Jan 1981

Application Of Piaget’S Theory Of Cognitive Growth To The Development Of An Interview Protocol And Validation Of A Task To Assess Reasoning Abilities Of College Students, Bruce Edward Perry

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The developmental theory of Jean Piaget provides a paradigm for evaluation of the reasoning abilities of an individual. The overall aim of Piaget's work was to delineate the sequence of the development of intelligence, particularly the ability of a subject to interact successfully with complex problems or to deal with simple problems in more efficient ways. To this end, this study investigated the validation of a new interview task as an instrument for assessing the formal reasoning abilities of college students. The new task, patterned after a game called MasterMind, requires the subject to deduce the color and location of …

La Funcion De La Ironia En Obras Selectas De Unamuno, John Frederick Day Jan 1981

La Funcion De La Ironia En Obras Selectas De Unamuno, John Frederick Day

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study attempts to point out the abundant irony in four works of fiction by the Spanish writer and thinker, Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936) and explain its function in expressing his thought. An introductory chapter defining irony and differentiating among its various types is applied to each of these four short novels (considered chronologically): Niebla, Abel Sanchez, Nada menos gue todo un hombre, and San Manuel Bueno, Mátir. The definition and classification of irony comes primarily from the work of D. C. Muecke on this subject, and secondarily from that of Wayne C. Booth. The former divides irony into …

A Burkian Motive Analysis Of Apologia: A Critical Analysis Of Clarence Darrow In His Own Defense, Steven L. Vibbert Jan 1980

A Burkian Motive Analysis Of Apologia: A Critical Analysis Of Clarence Darrow In His Own Defense, Steven L. Vibbert

Iowa Journal of Communication

I have committed one crime. I have stood for the weak and the poor. I have stood for the men who toiled.

Such was Clarence Darrow's contention before a Los Angeles jury on August 15, 1912. Darrow, perhaps the most renowned counsel of his day, stood at both a personal and professional crossroads. One path led to vindication. The other led to personal and professional ignominy. Accused of bribery, his character questioned, his career hanging in the balance, Darrow sought to steer the jury down the road which would exonerate him and renew his mission. Darrow's self-defense before that Los …

Philosophical Perspectives On Human Communication, Carrol C. Arnold Jan 1980

Philosophical Perspectives On Human Communication, Carrol C. Arnold

Iowa Journal of Communication

Anyone who makes assertions about the nature and significance of human communication will wittingly or unwittingly make commitments to fundamental assumptions about what it is to be a human being. If we do not pay attention to what these assumptions and commitments are, we are apt to wander into fantasy or self-contradiction or both. Dr. Hugh Blair, the Scottish man of letters, is a handy example. In the eighteenth century Blair promulgated the already popular theory that "taste" is a primary feature of all discourse. Whatever is said will reflect good, poor, or indifferent "taste." "Good taste" is the product …

An Alternative Explanation Of Women's Speech, Michael G. Parkinson, Diane Atkinson Gorcyca

Iowa Journal of Communication

The dialect labeled "women's speech" has been categorized based on speech behaviors which suggest deference and verbal unassertiveness. Various behaviors including question tagging, empty adjectives, hyper-correct grammar, a tendency to listen rather than to talk and excessive apology are used to a greater extent by women than men.

The Effects Of Matched Versus Unmatched Counselor/Client And Advisor/Advisee Relationships, Evelyn J. Richardson Jan 1980

The Effects Of Matched Versus Unmatched Counselor/Client And Advisor/Advisee Relationships, Evelyn J. Richardson

Graduate Research Papers

For many years now, the area of counseling has been discovering, rediscovering or defining new techniques to increase counselor effectiveness. Attempts have also been made to improve the current conditions of the counselor-counselee relationships. Among these improvements has been the suggestion for matched, by subculture, relationships. The issue has not been to destroy all unmatched relationships, but to argue that if counselors must counsel clients of different cultures at a minimum, training in that particular culture should be considered.

Ethics As A Science: Going From "Is" To "Ought", Warren Shibles Jan 1980

Ethics As A Science: Going From "Is" To "Ought", Warren Shibles

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Two beliefs which serve to prevent teaching, defining, or progress in ethics and morality are: 1. That we cannot derive an "ought" from an "is." We supposedly cannot derive value statements from factual statements. 2. That we cannot define ethical terms in terms of non-ethical terms (naturalistic fallacy). But can we derive an "ought" from an "is?" Does it ever make sense to do so? Let's take a case as it may arise. It is cold outside. I know that a chill may bring on a cold and I wish to avoid catching cold. I then conclude "I ought to …

Identification Of Teacher Concerns Toward Remediation Of Dialect-Related Reading Difficulties And Instructional Techniques Employed, Yvette C. Lewis Jan 1980

Identification Of Teacher Concerns Toward Remediation Of Dialect-Related Reading Difficulties And Instructional Techniques Employed, Yvette C. Lewis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The issue of reading failure among Black children, particularly those of urban areas, has been a consistent concern among educators and parents. Reasons as to why these children do not, as a group, achieve comparably with national norms relate heavily to the style of oral language they employ. Explanations given by experts in the areas of education and linguistics are derived from two models of reading behavior postulated by Weiner and Cromer (1967), the deficit model of reading failure among Black children which attributes their difficulty to the absence of adequate Standard English language skills, and the difference model, which …

A Comparison Of Formal Operational Thinking Ability With Reading Ability And Critical Thinking Ability For Tenth Grade Students, Theresa Jill Cecil Jan 1980

A Comparison Of Formal Operational Thinking Ability With Reading Ability And Critical Thinking Ability For Tenth Grade Students, Theresa Jill Cecil

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In recent years there has been a good deal of interest in Piaget's cognitive developmental theory as it relates to beginning reading and learning to read and a number of research studies have investigated the effect of cognitive stage on reading ability. Little research has been done, however, which investigate the relationships and effect of advanced levels of cognitive development upon the reading ability of adolescents and adults. The final stage of cognitive development is termed formal operational thinking in Piagetian theory and involves the ability to formulate hypotheses, reason logically and function in the abstract realm of possibility as …

Cognitive Patterns As A Basis For The Classification Of Learning Disabled Children: A Follow-Up Study, John Michael Carr Jan 1980

Cognitive Patterns As A Basis For The Classification Of Learning Disabled Children: A Follow-Up Study, John Michael Carr

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the educational implications of subdividing learning disabled children into cognitive ability groups according to a method proposed by Richman (1979b). A set of. unstandardized discriminant function coefficients were used to weight Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) subtest scores. Richman proposed that three cognitive ability groups could then be derived from these coefficients: an Abstract Reasoning group, a Sequencing-memory group, and a General Language Disability group. Richman had developed this procedure through the investigation of a group of children who met a WISC criterion of Verbal Scale +15 ≤ Performance Scale ≥ …
