Evaluation Of The Predictive Ability Of Four Screening Measures Used In Pre-Kindergarten Screening: A Follow-Up Study, Monica Marie Reichmuth Jan 1983

Evaluation Of The Predictive Ability Of Four Screening Measures Used In Pre-Kindergarten Screening: A Follow-Up Study, Monica Marie Reichmuth

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the expectancies of a set of screening measures (Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration, Peotone Language Scale, and the Motor Activity Scale) which have been used to identify prekindergarten children as either 11 ready 11 or 11 at-risk 11 to begin kindergarten. These screening measures were selected on the basis of their ability to measure readiness skills which were considered related to success in kindergarten (i.e., language, vocabulary, visual-motor perception, auditory and visual memory, and fine and gross motor skills). Subjects included 113 white middle class children from four …

Factors Contributing To The Preponderance Of Males In Learning Disabilities: A Follow-Up Study, Julie Carol Olson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study was designed to assess the utility of specific variables for differentiating LO males and LO females and LO students from RE students. Variables were selected based on previous research findings indicating their utility for differentiating the relevant samples and the availability of pertinent data in existing files. Data regarding the 21 pre-selected variables were obtained for all LO students (50 males and 30 females) and a control group of RE students matched with them by sex, grade, and age. Discriminant Analysis procedures were used to determine the intercorrelated grouping of variables which best differentiated sex within LO …

Communication By Writing: A Basic Part Of Science Education, Donald L. Schmidt, Robert S. Tapply Jan 1982

Communication By Writing: A Basic Part Of Science Education, Donald L. Schmidt, Robert S. Tapply

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

No responsible educator would deny that an educated person should have the ability to express himself in writing. One must not lose sight of this basic idea when teaching science. Far too often, science students communicate through definitions, symbols and technical terminology without making the attempt to combine a series of meaningful phrases which communicate an individual's understanding of science in a comprehensible way. The responsibility for teaching communication by writing in science rests clearly with the science teacher, who must develop strategies within the framework of the discipline to involve students in the process of writing.

Listening Bibliography, Lawrence Bernabo, John Mckiernan Jan 1982

Listening Bibliography, Lawrence Bernabo, John Mckiernan

Iowa Journal of Communication

The items in this bibliography were selected from three main sources: the Current Index of Journals in Education, Books in Print, and the University of Iowa library catalogue. Seeking to serve teachers and administrators at a wide variety of educational levels, we have sought to focus on items of primary interest for mainstream education in communication skills. We generally excluded items which dealt primarily with foreign languages, music, and the special techniques developed to teach handicapped students. We also sought to exclude the most technical articles. Finding that there still were too many items, we selected the most current books …

Nature And Effect Of Bilingual Education Programs On Second Language Acquisition, Mark David Finanger Jan 1982

Nature And Effect Of Bilingual Education Programs On Second Language Acquisition, Mark David Finanger

Graduate Research Papers

Bilingual programs, a newcomer to public education, are struggling against the hardships which accompany stages of infancy. Historically, bilingualism has been attempted in American schools since the eighteenth century when early immigrants organized schools to educate their children. Even today, public school classrooms contain children from other countries speaking different languages, representing different cultures. An education which enhances this bilingual atmosphere seems appropriate to fulfill the needs of non-English-speaking children. However, bilingual education in America is being denied the attention it deserves; consequently, the bilingual education effort to implement successful programs is accompanied by numerous problems.

Stereotypes Of The Native American In Fiction Books In Elementary School Libraries, Karma Anderson Jan 1982

Stereotypes Of The Native American In Fiction Books In Elementary School Libraries, Karma Anderson

Graduate Research Papers

This study proposed to investigate the kinds of Native American materials which were found in elementary school library media centers in Iowa Education Agency Seven (AEA 7). A questionnaire was prepared with seventeen recommended titles and fifteen presently criticized titles on which media specialists in AEA 7 were to indicate availability in their media centers. The hypothesis to be tested was: Given a list of books containing both reconnnended and presently criticized titles, 75 percent of school library specialists in AEA 7 will indicate that there are more recommended titles than presently criticized titles on Native Americans in their fiction …

A Study Of The Teaching Of Literature And The Place Of The Literature Of Iowa In The Secondary English Curriculum, Carol B. Mcmullen Jan 1982

A Study Of The Teaching Of Literature And The Place Of The Literature Of Iowa In The Secondary English Curriculum, Carol B. Mcmullen

Graduate Research Papers

To a teacher of English in an Iowa high school, it is amazing to find the literature of Iowa is not included in the English curriculum. Anthologies may include a short story by Hamlin Garland or one by Ruth Suckow, but often students are unaware these are Iowa authors. Even the history of Iowa is mandated in the Iowa curriculum. The omission of Iowa literature is disturbing, especially when a wide variety of other literary works are used.

The Influence Of Spelling Instruction Of Basal Vocabulary Words On The Comprehension Performances Of Third Graders, Dawn M. Williams Jan 1982

The Influence Of Spelling Instruction Of Basal Vocabulary Words On The Comprehension Performances Of Third Graders, Dawn M. Williams

Graduate Research Papers

Two successive intact third grade classes were involved in a study to test the hypothesis: If spelling instruction is coordinated with the basal reader by teaching the spelling of the basal vocabulary words, then reading comprehension performance will be greater than when an uncoordinated spelling-reading program is used. To determine comparability, the control and experimental groups were analyzed using the Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test and the reading subtest of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills resulting in no significant differences between groups concerning IQ and prior reading achievement. The control group used Spelling: Words and Skills for its uncoordinated spelling-reading …

Communication Rules And Negotiation Strategies: A Case Study, Ruth A. Brenner Hunt Jan 1982

Communication Rules And Negotiation Strategies: A Case Study, Ruth A. Brenner Hunt

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This case study examined negotiation tactics and strategies by challenging the theoretical basis for and actual use of William Donahue's negotiation interaction coding system. Three subproblems investigated the coding categories' construct validity, the negotiators' coordination and co-orientation, and their constitutive and regulative rules.

The method involved naturalistic observation in a quasi-experimental simulation of a civil suit, out-of-court proceeding. Twenty subjects role-played as attorneys for the plaintiff and defendant. Five pairs were students in a college course on negotiation, and five pairs were professionals whose work required bargaining skills.

The negotiators were given hypothetical case "facts" and encouraged to role play …

The Generalization Of The Reduction Of Stopping To Untrained Phonemes Following Syllable Practice, Lynn K. Grimes Jan 1982

The Generalization Of The Reduction Of Stopping To Untrained Phonemes Following Syllable Practice, Lynn K. Grimes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This investigation was concerned with the generalization which occurred from trained to untrained phonemes in which the process of stopping was operating. Two male subjects aged 5-3 and 4-0, who used the process of stopping, were chosen for this study on the basis of an examination of their articulation errors and the results of ten 15- word deep tests. A 48-item probe test, to assess the frequency of stopping for selected phonemes, was administered three times to establish baseline. Syllable practice was then conducted with four phonemes for each subject alternating between practice on a single phoneme and practice on …

Interpretation Of English Intonation And Stress Patterns Reproduced By Vietnamese Speakers, Jolene Gear Jan 1982

Interpretation Of English Intonation And Stress Patterns Reproduced By Vietnamese Speakers, Jolene Gear

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study examines native English speakers' perception of English sentences reproduced by Vietnamese speakers. The work is based on the question of whether Vietnamese speakers who use tone to make lexical distinctions in their own language can reproduce syntactical and lexical distinctions in English and if native English speakers can judge these distinction so Previous experiments done on intonation, stress and tone are discussed, followed by an examination of similarities and differences between Vietnamese and English prosody. The present experiment consisted of these steps: Pilot studies were conducted to determine which sentences of contrastive intonation and stress were to …

A Study Of The Effect Of Programmed Reading Vs. Basal Reading On Spelling Achievement, Kathleen Ann Callan Jan 1981

A Study Of The Effect Of Programmed Reading Vs. Basal Reading On Spelling Achievement, Kathleen Ann Callan

Graduate Research Papers

The problem of spelling has concerned educators since the late nineteenth century. "How well children learn to spell is affected by what is done in reading, in written work, in handwriting, in speaking, in addition to what is done in periods devoted specifically to spelling. Recognizing the fact that spelling is an integral part of the many facets of language, considerable amounts of research have been compiled taking many different approaches. Leonard Cahen (1971) in his survey of the research of spelling difficulties cited more than 100 studies just in the area of attempting to predict spelling difficulty. Those did …

The Pedagogical Use Of Fallacies: Or The Fallacy Of The "Fallacy Of Fallacies", John R. Lyne Jan 1981

The Pedagogical Use Of Fallacies: Or The Fallacy Of The "Fallacy Of Fallacies", John R. Lyne

Iowa Journal of Communication

My position is that fallacies should be retained as pedagogical devices, and that the impetus toward eliminating them reflects a mistaken notion that argument admits of merely descriptive and not critical study. This view, in my opinion, promotes a confusion of the descriptive-critical distinction with a "real-world"-classroom distinction. I would take it as a valid criticism of fallacies as pedagogical devices if it could be shown that they were irrelevant outside the classroom. They are relevant, I believe, as critical and not just descriptive tools.

Language Functions In The Interpretation Of Dialogue, Phyllis Scott Carlin Jan 1981

Language Functions In The Interpretation Of Dialogue, Phyllis Scott Carlin

Iowa Journal of Communication

Recurrent problems surface in the interpreter’s performance of the dialogue portions of fiction, where the solo reader is attempting to suggest interaction of characters, interplay of nonverbal responses, and distinctions of personalities. A resource for improving the performer's dialogue creation is available in a system of analysis which is based upon recent research by sociolinguists into nonfictional, ordinary conversation.

Selected Topics On Individualized Instruction, Wilmer Purvis Peeler Jan 1981

Selected Topics On Individualized Instruction, Wilmer Purvis Peeler

Graduate Research Papers

The formal development of individualized instructional programs in America began as a reaction against the age-graded lock-step system in which all students were constrained to study the same materials, in the same way, for the same length of time. Arguments for breaking down uniformity of instruction gained support with the appearance of instruments for measuring human abilities. It became clear that students differ not only in intelligence but in creativity. It also became clear that great differences between competence and performance are possible, and that inequalities in intellect, physical ability and social behavior, great in childhood, increase as students move …

A Review Of Literature On The Relationship Between Legibility Standards For Printed And Projected Type, Lawrence Cardamon Jan 1981

A Review Of Literature On The Relationship Between Legibility Standards For Printed And Projected Type, Lawrence Cardamon

Graduate Research Papers

Print legibility is of concern to all seeing, reading individuals. For over 100 years educators, printers, psychologists and ophthalmologists, among others, have investigated a wide number of interrelated factors in print legibility. This research reached its zenith in the 1920's through 1940's, particularly in the voluminous work of M.A. Tinker and D. G. Paterson. There is a large and growing body of knowledge available on what affects the quality of our perceptions of printed typography.

The Nature Of Oral Reading And Its Role In The Classroom, Paulette Schuessler

Graduate Research Papers

The main purpose of this research paper is to explore the nature of the oral reading process and its role in developing children who can read with fluency and understanding. Specifically, the questions that will be dealt with in the first section include: What is involved in the process of oral reading? What relationship exists between oral and silent reading? What is the relationship between oral reading and comprehension? The next section is mainly concerned with the basic considerations that teachers should have in mind regarding the proper uses, as well as misuses of oral reading activities. It will focus …

The Reading Habits Of Mesquakie Parents, Linda Benson Tyon Jan 1981

The Reading Habits Of Mesquakie Parents, Linda Benson Tyon

Graduate Research Papers

A number of texts used in the teaching of reading discuss :factors related to reading readiness, achievement, and attitudes. One of the most significant factors discussed is the home or family environment. Under the broad topic of home or family environment, numerous subcategories are operating. Some of the sub-categories include the socioeconomic background of a family (Artley, 1968); the bilingual/ bicultural background of a family (Allen, 1976); the emotional and psychological state of the family (Harris & Sipay, 1975); and the behavior and attitudes about reading within the family (Karlin, 1978).
