The Nature Of Science, David Roskos-Ewoldsen Jan 1984

The Nature Of Science, David Roskos-Ewoldsen

Iowa Journal of Communication

During the 1920's, the logical positivists attempted to establish a formal system for the advancement of science through the Vienna circle. Basically, the logical positivists argued that the ultimate purpose of science should be the advancement towards final truth. This could be done through scientific investigations that removed theory from observation. Theory served the role of explaining why observations occurred. But the advancement of science came through the removal of theory from these scientific observations. By removing theory from observations, it was assumed that science would be able to advance towards the ultimate goal of truth because these observations, being …

Reading Readiness: Definitions And Assessment Circa 1950 And 1980, Sharon Rae Erwin Jan 1984

Reading Readiness: Definitions And Assessment Circa 1950 And 1980, Sharon Rae Erwin

Graduate Research Papers

This review proposes to discover how educators defined reading readiness and what they recommended relative to the cognitive skills assessment of reading readiness in 1950 and 1980. 2 A second purpose is to discover if standardized assessment devices reflect the definitions and recommendations. There is an ever increasing need to know what cognitive skills a child should be equipped with before learning to read. Today's society has increased pressure for academic achievement of elementary children. This pressure has resulted in early introduction of formal reading instruction in first grade and much attention to the reading readiness program in kindergarten (Hoffman …

The Language Experience Approach And Its Possible Implications For The Reading Disabled, Pamela Mueller Leahy

The Language Experience Approach (LEA) has been around a long time as a supplemental enrichment or reinforcement activity to be utilized occasionally in the traditional phonics or skills approach to teaching reading. with the advent or resurgence, depending on one's philosophy, or the whole language approach supported by Goodman (1972), Stauffer (1968), and van Allen (1967) a new look has been taken at the language experience approach and the contributions it can make in the teaching of reading. The purpose or this paper is to present LEA not only as a supplement but also as a possible viable program option …

Performance Of Aphasic Listeners On An Expanded Rtt Subtest Presented Verbally And Non-Verbally, Ann Elizabeth Folkestad Jan 1984

Performance Of Aphasic Listeners On An Expanded Rtt Subtest Presented Verbally And Non-Verbally, Ann Elizabeth Folkestad

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A controversy exists in the literature concerning the nature of aphasia. Some authorities believe that aphasia involves a loss of the linguistic elements of language. Other investigators maintain that aphasia is a performance deficit founded in a reduced ability to use essentially-preserved linguistic competence. This study addressed aspects of the above controversy. Asked specifically was the question of whether the mechanism underlying aphasia involves a neurolinguistic loss and thus, is specific to language, or alternately, involves a non-language specific interference with the accessing of retained capacity. This investigation examined the following issues: whether there are one or several patterns of …

Communication Competence And Varying Communication Experiences, Mark Redmond Jan 1983

Communication Competence And Varying Communication Experiences, Mark Redmond

Iowa Journal of Communication

Communication competence is becoming a topic of increased interest. Much of this interest stems from a desire to delineate those skills that should be emphasized in speech communication education of children that will benefit them the most. The constellation of skills is often lumped into the category called communication competence. This interest is justified when one considers the importance that communication is playing in today's society. The United States is known as a melting pot of cultures, and it is likely that the average American will meet and interact with a variety of people. The greater the likelihood of having …

Self-Image Psychology And Its Effects On Human Potential, Lila Porter Staff Jan 1983

Self-Image Psychology And Its Effects On Human Potential, Lila Porter Staff

Graduate Research Papers

All human beings have a wealth of talent and ability lying dormant within them. This hidden wealth has been labeled human potential. People have not yet determined an accurate way to measure or predict human potential. But, if they were to look back over history, they could clearly see hills and valleys of human achievement. The intent of this paper is to share insights and concepts that will allow people to develop more of their own potential. Then, with this understanding of concepts, instructional designers can more intelligently and successfully develop instruction that is consistent with the way their students …

A Study Of Kindergarten Attendance Patterns, Clark William Goltz Jan 1983

A Study Of Kindergarten Attendance Patterns, Clark William Goltz

Graduate Research Papers

In 1956 the first kindergarten was established in the city of Watertown, Wisconsin by Margarethe Meyer Schurz, a disciple of Friedrich Froebel. (Cutright, 1981) The kindergarten and kindergarten curriculum were designed by Froebel in Germany in the 1830's and 1840's. The original kindergarten concept was established for preschoolers three to seven years old. Smith (1971) states that the kindergarten was a system of intellectual, moral and physical education, which reflected pedagogical principles considered foolish and extreme in the middle of the 19th century, namely the significance of play and the need to base the curriculum on the child's interest and …

Some Considerations Of Oral Reading In A Remedial Reading Program, Roberta K. Wright Jan 1983

Some Considerations Of Oral Reading In A Remedial Reading Program, Roberta K. Wright

Graduate Research Papers

It is understood that both oral reading and silent reading instruction are necessary functions of a successful reading program. It is also understood that silent and oral reading have many common skills although they represent different processes for the proficient reader. However, a remedial reading setting is not representative of proficient readers. The question to which this research review has been directed is: What are some potential uses of oral reading in a remedial reading setting with elementary age students who have reading problems? The concern of this paper is in areas in addition to the important role that oral …
