A Study Of The Relationship Of Three Different Oral Revision Activities And Expository Rewriting, Terryl Friberg Anderson Jan 1986

A Study Of The Relationship Of Three Different Oral Revision Activities And Expository Rewriting, Terryl Friberg Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As theorists and instructors of written composition come to understand writing as more than a product of putting thoughts on slate, paper, or screen, oral revision techniques such as student-teacher conferences and peer editing groups are increasingly being used during the process of composing. Recent reports indicate use of these and other speaking activities in the writing classroom, as pre-writing procedures and as revision techniques, for example. Yet, the call continues for more research in both the teaching of written composition and in speaking/writing relationships. This research was designed to determine the effects of using three different oral revision techniques--peer …

Vocal Stress Patterns And Stuttering: A Study Of Predictive Value, Julie Anne Christy Jan 1986

Vocal Stress Patterns And Stuttering: A Study Of Predictive Value, Julie Anne Christy

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The relationship between stuttering and linguistic stress was observed within four adult stutterers. A specially designed test passage was read by each of the subjects five successive times. The passage contained 18 test syllables, nine were stressed and nine were non-stressed as indicated by dictionary diacritical markings. Six measurements of acoustic indicators of stress, including fundamental frequency, intensity, and duration, were obtained for each subject for the fluent adapted productions of the test syllables and the immediately preceding syllables. Correlated t-tests were computed to determine if significant differences existed between stressed and non-stressed phonetically matched syllables for each of the …

Plato's Crito: A Speech Act And Structuralist Analysis For Performance, Gary Gerard Gute Jan 1986

Plato's Crito: A Speech Act And Structuralist Analysis For Performance, Gary Gerard Gute

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Although scholars recognize many of Plato's early dialogues as works of significant dramatic merit, few attempts have been made to either systematically analyze them for performance or to dramatize them in their entirety. A traditional Aristotelian analysis does not facilitate bringing the dialogues to fruition in theatrical performance because of their lack of physical, external action. This study, recognizing the dramatic potential of Plato's Crito, undertakes an analysis of the dialogue for the purpose of performance . Two methodologies are applied: Speech Act and Structuralist Analyses. The study culminates in a dramatic production of the Crito.

According to speech act …

Developing Reading Strategies: Teachers’ Responses To Miscues, Valori Dawn Hansen Jan 1986

Developing Reading Strategies: Teachers’ Responses To Miscues, Valori Dawn Hansen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Research has suggested that many low-achieving readers may be receiving feedback to their miscues which is not helpful and is very different than that being provided high-achieving readers. The assumption seems to be that if teachers respond to low achieving readers in the same manner as high-achieving readers, then they would begin to see the low-achieving readers using the more effective strategies similar to those used by the high achieving readers. Yet the question remains of how we systematically develop effective feedback strategies in teachers. Specifically, this study proposed to answer the question: What is the effect of a four-part …

Administrative Decision: Half-Day Everyday Or All-Day Alternate Day Kindergarten Programs, Dean Weldon Flaws Jr. Jan 1985

Administrative Decision: Half-Day Everyday Or All-Day Alternate Day Kindergarten Programs, Dean Weldon Flaws Jr.

Graduate Research Papers

Just over one hundred years ago, the first public kindergarten was established in the United States. Historically kindergarten began as an all-day program. Half-day-kindergartens were developed because of the increase in the number of children and the shortages of teachers and classroom space (Oelrich, 1979). Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827) was a Swiss educator who believed education should develop a child morally, physically, and intellectually. He felt that children learned best by using their own senses and by discovering things for themselves . His methods and theories were so successful that· educators from all parts of the world came to study …

Education Today: Manifestations of a Problem "Our nation is at risk," according to the National Commission on Excellence in Education.1 This report cites the following evidence, taken from a number of other studies, for the crises that exist in our schools today. 1. American students scored last on seven of nineteen academic tests comparing student achievement with other industrialized nations. 2. Compared to twenty-six years ago when Sputnik was launched, average high school student achievement on most standardized test scores has dropped. 3. An unbroken decline in the College Boards Scholastic Aptitude Test from 1963 to 1980 has been reported. …

Case Study: Comparison And Information Of Science Education At The Three State Universities In Iowa, Rita Hrecz

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper was threefolds:

1) To fulfill a course requirement;

2) To acquaint myself with the reason for the comme·nts I've heard about Science Education at the University of Northern Iowa being unique,

J) To exchange information between the three State Universities from my belief that we often do not communicate enough and are therefore missing opportunities to support and assist one another.

Comprehension Elements In Three Kindergarten Basals, Cynthia Ann Mathiesen Jan 1985

Comprehension Elements In Three Kindergarten Basals, Cynthia Ann Mathiesen

Graduate Research Papers

Despite our capacity for obtaining information in a variety of ways, reading remains a very important tool , The process of learning to read begins before reading readiness activities are introduced in Kindergarten. The heart of the reading process is comprehension, and the primary aim of reading instruction is to develop readers who understand and react to what they read (McCracken & McCracken, 1972). In short, they must comprehend the passage.

Learning Strategies As An Aid To Graphical Comprehension, Peggy Pruisner Jan 1985

Learning Strategies As An Aid To Graphical Comprehension, Peggy Pruisner

Graduate Research Papers

The highest human abilities- perceptual, intellectual, and linguistic- interact and support each other during the act of reading. The processing and assimilating of written information is the single goal of reading. The complex mental process that is used when a reader encounters a variety of materials that satisfy many needs and purposes cannot be easily dissected into a hierarchy of skills, but is represented by a large number of interrelated skills that gradually develop. The total process of reading is impaired if any major function or part prevents adequate performance, thereby preventing literacy. It is vital to note that the …

Status, Self, And Peers: An Ethnography Of Junior High School, Susan Martha Nesheim Allbee Jan 1985

Status, Self, And Peers: An Ethnography Of Junior High School, Susan Martha Nesheim Allbee

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This report begins with a brief discussion of the overall purpose of social science: to be of service to humankind. To examine and report one's findings is no longer the whole of the responsibility of social scientific research. One must also examine the purpose and objectives of that research. In view of those statements, the objective of this project--the gathering and analysis of information on the culture of junior high school students-- is to gain a better understanding of early adolescence and thereby offer opportunities for insights not only into their culture but to add to the body of knowledge …

The Development And Initial Validation Of A Test Of Students’ Use Of Morphemic Analysis In Deriving Word Meaning, Maelou Kelly Baxter

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to develop and initially validate a test of students' use of morphemic analysis in deriving word meaning. Eight steps in test construction were followed: (a) definition of test objectives, (b) definition of target population, (c) review of related measures, (d) development of an item pool, (e) preparation of a prototype, (f) evaluation of the prototype, (g) revision of the measure, and (h) collection of data on test validity and reliability. The field testing was conducted with 15 fifth-grade and 15 sixth-grade readers who lived in a midwestern town with a population of about 35,000. …

Perception Of English/Spanish Vot By Monolingual English Speakers: A Dichotic Study, Cynthia Flesher Barrios Jan 1985

Perception Of English/Spanish Vot By Monolingual English Speakers: A Dichotic Study, Cynthia Flesher Barrios

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Dichotic listening tasks have been used extensively to establish the left cerebral hemisphere as dominant for linguistic processing. Dichotic stress has also been used to investigate lateralization patterns for individuals who speak more than one language and if those patterns differ from those found in monolingual speakers. Most investigations of this nature, with both monolingual and bilingual subjects, have found a right ear advantage (REA) for linguistic processing. Voice onset time (VOT) is the acoustic parameter primarily responsible for the categorical discrimination of stop consonants in a number of different languages, including English and Spansih [sic]. It has been found …

Preschoolers' Gender Assignment To An Androgynous Storybook Character, Mara C. Loeb Jan 1985

Preschoolers' Gender Assignment To An Androgynous Storybook Character, Mara C. Loeb

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Tests designed to identify sexual preference, and administered to 8th grade through college-age subjects, have revealed a strong male bias in the responses by both sexes. Perceived similarity to a character (identification) increases attention to, and memory of, sex stereotyped information. Thus, a preference for the male gender would increase the effectiveness of information for males but not for females, since identification is not possible. This study examined preschoolers' identification with an androgynous storybook character. Eighty three- and four-year-old boys and girls from randomly chosen preschools were read a storybook prepared for this study. The storybook controlled for three gender …

Audience Preference For Metaphoric Concept In Broadcast Language, Denis Martin Bramblette Jan 1985

Audience Preference For Metaphoric Concept In Broadcast Language, Denis Martin Bramblette

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A recent communication theory premise that individuals tend to arrange their thinking metaphorically is the focus of this study. Some communication scholars posit that humans actually think in metaphors. That is, individuals understand something by using one thing to stand for another. Humans communicate by comparing things they understand. Thus, we as humans actually arrange our thinking metaphorically and we understand things or interpret symbols by processing information through a system of metaphoric concepts.

This study attempts to extend metaphoric concept communication theory by examining the broadcast news segment of mass media. This study's general hypothesis is that if individuals …

Response Latency In Fluent And Disfluent Preschoolers, Sue Ann Kenlee Hook Jan 1985

Response Latency In Fluent And Disfluent Preschoolers, Sue Ann Kenlee Hook

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study was to investigate the possibility that disfluent preschoolers manifest a more impulsive cognitive tempo as compared to a language-matched control group of subjects. Nine disfluent and nine control subjects responded to two tasks designed to measure response latency from which a measure of impulsiveness could be determined. One was a classic match-to-sample figures task and the other involved verbal descriptions of ·irregularities represented in a set of pictures. Response latencies (in ms) and the number of errors made were tallied for the first task and response latencies were measured in 1/100 second for the second …

The Relationships Between Measures Of Concept Of Written Word, Martha White Johnson Jan 1985

The Relationships Between Measures Of Concept Of Written Word, Martha White Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The specific purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between measures of concept of written word. Researcher-adapted instruments, based on studies widely cited in the literature, were developed for this study. Each instrument had an alternate form to allow two administrations with each subject. These concept of written word measures were as follows: (1) Circling Task, adapted from a study by Meltzer and Herse, (2) Sliding Task, taken from Clay's Concept about Print Tests, Sand and Stones, (3) Pointing Task, adapted from a study by Morris, and (4) Writing Task, adapted from studies by Sulzby and Clay. The Effects Of Artistic Three Dimensionality On Preschoolers’ Perception Of Line Drawings, Barbara Lynn Froyen Jan 1985

The Effects Of Artistic Three Dimensionality On Preschoolers’ Perception Of Line Drawings, Barbara Lynn Froyen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study was to compare different forms of stimuli for eliciting children's knowledge of their language. The study compared black-and-white drawings employing cues to depth, movement, and form. Pictures from various commercially available receptive and expressive language tests were selected. Three-dimensional representations of the same linguistic concepts were developed by the investigator. Selected test stimuli and their three-dimensional counterparts were administered to 30 preschool-age children. Responses to both stimuli were judged as correct or incorrect by the scoring conventions of the test from which the items were selected. Study results indicated that within each dimension tested, pictures …
