Education For Gifted And Talented Children: Suggestions For Improving Gifted And Talented Programs In Malaysia, Md Ismail Bin Jamjam Jan 1987

Education For Gifted And Talented Children: Suggestions For Improving Gifted And Talented Programs In Malaysia, Md Ismail Bin Jamjam

Graduate Research Papers

Gifted and talented children are an asset to every society. If they are to be the leaders of tomorrow, there is a critical need to educate them well for the future. Education targeted for the gifted and talented was initiated in Malaysia in the early 20th Century when the first fully residential school was established. But it appears that in the years since its inception there has been no plan to differentiate significantly this program from the regular day schools, which are the conventional form of education common in Malaysia.

An Overview Of The Phonetic Approach To Reading, Lawrence M. Jaske

Graduate Research Papers

As the nation's reading experts debate about the best method to teach reading, our country's "functionally illiterate" stand in the shadow of the conflict. Now numbering about 26 million, our "functionally illiterate" compose a substantial sector of our population. Although there are a variety of available reading programs, the two main approaches are phonics and whole word methods.

The Effects Of Storytelling Experiences On Vocabulary Skills Of Second Grade Students, Gail E. Froyen Jan 1987

The Effects Of Storytelling Experiences On Vocabulary Skills Of Second Grade Students, Gail E. Froyen

Graduate Research Papers

Subjects were 40 second grade students from Lowell School, Waterloo, IA. The students met for 14 weekly forty minute sessions where they heard folktales, learned folktales to tell, and told or listened to each other tell folktales. All second grade students were tested with the ITBS Primary Battery in October 1986 (pre-test) and the subjects took the post-test in April, 1987.

The null hypothesis stated there would be no significant difference in standard scores at p<.05 using as pre-and post-tests ITBS Primary Test V-Vocabulary when compared using NCE's to the national norms of that test. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference at the p<.005 level. Therefore, the hypothesis was rejected

The Ericksonian Approach To Trance Induction And It's Application To Nonhypnotic Therapy, Kathryn Alice O'Connor Jan 1987

The Ericksonian Approach To Trance Induction And It's Application To Nonhypnotic Therapy, Kathryn Alice O'Connor

Graduate Research Papers

Milton Erickson reasoned that since each person is unique, psychotherapy should be adapted to meet the individual's needs, rather than attempting to tailor the person to fit the therapist's theory (Zeig, 1985). He said that he invented a new theory for each individual (Lankton & Lankton, 1963). The unconscious or 'the back of the mind' as Erickson described it is the reservoir of learning (Erickson, 1980). It constitutes a storehouse of experiences, learnings, memories and skills that could be utilized by therapists to bring about desired changes. Clients were helped to find both the tools and the raw materials for …

The Effects Of Integrating Electronic Media Into Composition Processes Of The English Classroom In The Eighties, Pollyanna Bosker Shoemaker Jan 1987

The Effects Of Integrating Electronic Media Into Composition Processes Of The English Classroom In The Eighties, Pollyanna Bosker Shoemaker

Graduate Research Papers

In 1934, more than fifty years before the arrival of personal computers, Thomas Frederick Blanchard, a professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles, stated the following: "The teacher of composition as an art is particularly assisted by the employment of usable devices. It is true that every competent instructor will invent devices of his own, but no competent instructor should refuse aid wherever he finds it" (p. ix).

The Relationship Between Black Student Racial Identity Attitudes, Self-Expectancy, And Academic Performance At The College Level, Primrose Simphiwe Mngadi Jan 1987

The Relationship Between Black Student Racial Identity Attitudes, Self-Expectancy, And Academic Performance At The College Level, Primrose Simphiwe Mngadi

Graduate Research Papers

The fact that black student academic performance has persistently fallen short of white student performance has been a matter of concern among educational practitioners and has been documented in countless educational and sociological literature. Not only has this trend been reflected in lower SAT scores and lower GPA's, but also in lower retention and higher attrition rates (Garibaldi, 1986; Wilson, 1981). The results of numerous studies have suggested various factors that might contribute to this unfortunate state of affairs. These range from factors that are internal to the student such as self-esteem, achievement motivation, and self-expectancy, to factors that are …

Power Plays: Feminist Theory Of Power In A Select Group Of Lillian Hellman's Plays, Cindy J. Pope Jan 1987

Power Plays: Feminist Theory Of Power In A Select Group Of Lillian Hellman's Plays, Cindy J. Pope

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study focuses on the way in which female characters within a selected group of Lillian Hellman's works use power. The overall purpose of this study is to scrutinize the modern theory of feminist power based on Hanna Pitkin, Dorothy Emmet, Berenice Carroll, and Marilyn French. All four base the modern theory of feminist power on the assertion that men and women have different experiences of power. This study is a literary review of three plays by Hellman.

The plays that are examined for this study include: The Children's Hour (1939), The Little Foxes (1939), and Toys In The Attic …

A Comparison Of The Iowa Language Arts Curriculum Guide And Project S.T.A.G.E., Randall Mark Wright Jan 1987

A Comparison Of The Iowa Language Arts Curriculum Guide And Project S.T.A.G.E., Randall Mark Wright

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Current research on teaching strategies for language arts advocates the use of an integrated approach. This approach calls for the treatment of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in relation to each other. Thus, learning in one area may benefit the others. While current literature states that this is not commonly happening in our schools today, there is an increasing awareness of the need to implement such strategies.

To help facilitate this change, curricular guidelines have been developed by the State of Iowa to help schools develop new language arts curricula that will reflect current research. These guidelines stress the integration …

Metacognition As A Theoretical Construct: Its Nature, Origins, And Application In The Secondary Reading Program, Karen Collinge Carroll Jan 1987

Metacognition As A Theoretical Construct: Its Nature, Origins, And Application In The Secondary Reading Program, Karen Collinge Carroll

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Metacognition is a theoretical construct used to describe a type of cognitive ability through which an individual assesses the range and quality of his/her own knowledge and is able to gain insight and control over particular aspects of his/her own cognitive and affective processes. Metacognition appears to be an important factor in development of higher level thinking skills, in acquisition of knowledge, and in reading comprehension. Because of its role in reading and learning, metacognition may prove to be an ideal construct on which to base secondary reading instruction, an area of secondary curriculum which is in particular need of …

Italo Calvino: A Writer Fascinated With Form, Ann Ellsworth Jan 1987

Italo Calvino: A Writer Fascinated With Form, Ann Ellsworth

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Italo Calvino is a twentieth-century writer whose work reflects a transition from realism or neorealism to postmodernism. This thesis will explore how that shift occurred. I will show how Calvino's early fascination with form, especially the techniques of oral storytelling, led to a later focus on form in his boldly experimental works. In the first chapter I will point out the early signs of fantasy in Calvino's neorealistic novel, The Path to the Nest of Spiders. This novel's affinity to folktales and use of fantasy foretell Calvino's subsequent contributions to these literary genres. I will discuss how Calvino's work with …

Classroom Writing: Incorporating It Into The Total Curriculum, Curt S. Howard Jan 1986

Classroom Writing: Incorporating It Into The Total Curriculum, Curt S. Howard

Graduate Research Papers

In the last few years, writing has become a major subject of discussion. Students who are not able to read I and write make headlines in newspapers and magazines. Letters to the newspaper editors reflect the concerns of both parents and teachers about the lack of writing skills. Reports on education have made laymen more aware of writing problems. Educators are feeling pressure from legislators who are responding to pressure from constituents.

Writing, The Process Approach: A Directed Search From Prewriting To Publication, Diane D. Barkema

Graduate Research Papers

This study was designed to determine what the writing process, if implimented (sic) properly could do to cultivate written expression of children. Specifically, the study hoped to answer the following questions. 1. What method is most productive in teaching young children to write? 2. How is it implemented in the classroom? 3. How does research provide guidance for the classroom teacher? This will be the basis of the research done on the process of writing. The literature will be synthesized to draw conclusions that will provide guidance to the classroom teacher.

Extending Visual Language In The First Grade Classroom, Carol W. Shaw Jan 1986

Extending Visual Language In The First Grade Classroom, Carol W. Shaw

Graduate Research Papers

The myth "children are not able to write unless they can read" has been generally accepted. Yet, the studies of Calkins (1983) and Graves (1983) conclude that ninety percent of all children come to school believing they can write. They have some concept of writing and can write from the first day of school. This ability to write is no accident, for children have been copying the writers in their home environment.

Utilizing The Reading-Writing Connection With First Grade Students In A Chapter I Reading Program, Ruth A. Marrs Jan 1986

Utilizing The Reading-Writing Connection With First Grade Students In A Chapter I Reading Program, Ruth A. Marrs

Graduate Research Papers

Extending reading ability is one of the major goals of primary grades in the elementary school. All children do not progress in their efforts to gain literacy at the same rate. Because the American culture places such importance on literacy, children who gain reading ability slowly cause much concern for the school and their families. Parents want schools to provide programs that will help their children learn to read.
