Programs For Improving The Academic Achievement Of The Marginal Student, David Joel Ziesmer Jan 1986

Programs For Improving The Academic Achievement Of The Marginal Student, David Joel Ziesmer

Graduate Research Papers

Education in America derives from a society that honors success, competition, and achievement. With these components being emphasized in schools there is an unavoidable consequence. 3 A group of students will see themselves or be perceived by others, as losers (Wehlage, 1983). The secondary educational system refers to these students as underachievers, non-achievers, disadvantaged, undermotivated, disaffected, school-alienated, at-risk for failure, and marginal.

Frontier Settlement And Community Building On Western Iowa's Loess Hills, Margaret Atherton Bonney Jan 1986

Frontier Settlement And Community Building On Western Iowa's Loess Hills, Margaret Atherton Bonney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Despite the unique Loess Hills topography, Anglo-European settlement in the Loess Hills followed a well-established pattern developed over two-hundred years of previous frontier experience. Early explorers and Indian traders first penetrated the wilderness. Then the pressure of white settlement caused the government to make treaties with and remove Indian tribes, thus opening a region for settlement. Settlers arrived and purchased land through a sixty-year-old government procedure and a territorial government provided the necessary legal structure for the occupants. Pioneers selected farmland near water and timber, practiced proven frontier agricultural methods, and built towns based on patterns developed during earlier frontier …

An Analysis Of 10 General Purpose Database Programs For Online Features, Sue Davis

Graduate Research Papers

The researcher questioned if school library media specialists could use general purpose database programs to introduce online skills to students. Using 10 database programs, software recommended for student use in educational articles, the researcher analyzed the programs for the 27 online search features, 11 online printing features, and 10 other online features. Grouping the programs into two grade levels, grades 3-6 and 7-adult, the researcher calculated the number and percentage of online features each program contain5and the number and percentage of programs with a particular feature. Effects Of Learning Strategy Training On College Students' Attitude And Academic Performance, Lilia T. Magdamo Jan 1986

Effects Of Learning Strategy Training On College Students' Attitude And Academic Performance, Lilia T. Magdamo

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was undertaken to identify the students' learning deficits and the effects of learning strategy training on their perceptions of reading and study efficiency as well as their ability to transfer the learning skills in realistic context like content area courses. The 143 subjects were college students enrolled in six sections of 20:040 (Nature and Conditions of Learning) during the spring semester of 1986 at the University of Northern Iowa. Out of this number, 27 volunteered to undergo "Effective Study Strategies," a non-credit 6-week training course offered by the Office of Learning and Instruction. An Experimental Cost Index Model For The Analysis Of Service Cost Differentials Of Iowa School Districts, Dean W. Meier Jan 1986

An Experimental Cost Index Model For The Analysis Of Service Cost Differentials Of Iowa School Districts, Dean W. Meier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study was to construct a service cost index (SCI) for a sample of Iowa school districts and to use the SCI to examine the relationship school district size has to efficiency of educational services delivery. The SCI was based upon the computation of the cost of delivering a fixed market basket of services to a typical student in each of 44 randomly selected Iowa high schools. The Minimum Curriculum Requirements and Standards for Approved Schools, as outlined in the Code of Iowa, comprised the market basket of services. Instruction, administration, support, and transportation cost components comprised …

We Will Survive: An Ethnography Of The Grateful Dead Following, Ray Eldridge Jan 1986

We Will Survive: An Ethnography Of The Grateful Dead Following, Ray Eldridge

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Experiencing continual re-creation during each of the twenty-one years preceding 1986, this study's core may continue to unfold indefinitely. Although discovered to encapsulate elements grounded elsewhere, this culture centers upon an experimental musical group known as the Grateful Dead. First encountering the Grateful Dead in the summer of 1981, their ageless repertoire failed to capture me, but an unusual audience filled my senses. Flowing print skirts and other bright but tired attire suggested San Francisco of a time then fifteen years past. Subdued excitement replaced the alcohol inhibition of many rock shows. As the band finally appeared, a peacefully elated …

Response, Frank Cordaro Jan 1986

Response, Frank Cordaro

Iowa Journal of Communication

My acts of civil disobedience between the years 1977 and 1982 were rooted in a living tradition of love based/faith centered non-violent direct action. I see myself as part of a growing Resistance Church in this country. Non-violent direct action is the use of power to change a given situation without the use of violence. History is filled with examples of people using non-violent tactics to force social change. Strikes, boycotts and different forms of non-cooperation are examples of nonviolent tactics used to bring about change.

Teaching Values Through Drama, Gretta Berghammer Jan 1986

Teaching Values Through Drama, Gretta Berghammer

Iowa Journal of Communication

Teaching values through the use of drama is not a radically new idea. In 1966 Melvin Bogin wrote a thesis entitled: "Values Transmitted to Children's Theatre Audiences by Children's Theatre.'' Since then, artists and educators have continued to probe the connection between pedagogy and dramatic art forms. Unfortunately, when parents, teachers, and administrators are approached about examining values through drama, they are often reluctant, in fear that social or political positions will be advocated to students. Nothing could be further from the truth.

On Grounds Of Conscience: The Failed Rhetoric Of Frank Cordaro, W. Thomas Duncanson Jan 1986

On Grounds Of Conscience: The Failed Rhetoric Of Frank Cordaro, W. Thomas Duncanson

Iowa Journal of Communication

In 1976, Des Moines native Frank Cordaro graduated from the Aquinas Institute of Theology (then located in Dubuque), refused ordination in the Roman Catholic Church, and moved to Des Moines to found a Catholic Worker community of hospitality. From 1976 to 1982 when he left the Des Moines Catholic Worker house, Cordaro was the preeminent radical in Iowa. What follows is a study of Frank Cordaro as a rhetorical failure during the period in which he founded and guided the Des Moines Catholic Worker community.

It has been an infrequent practice in rhetorical studies to write about people who have …
