Factors Associated With The Relationship Between Juvenile Delinquency And Adult Criminality: A Sample Of State Training School Residents In Iowa, Kristin Renae Baughman

It is unclear what the relationship is between juvenile delinquency and adult criminality. Many people assume that an individual who commits several crimes as a juvenile will also commit crimes as an adult, yet most juvenile offenders do not become adult offenders. It is also unclear what role institutionalization of juvenile delinquents plays in arresting or intensifying criminal careers. Some reappear in the adult correctional system while others become lawful citizens. The current study looks at one set of the most serious juvenile delinquents, those placed in a state training school in Iowa. In order to determine the relationship between …

The previous article describes the need for oral communication across the curriculum and raises justified concerns about quality control. Possibly those who plan future approaches can benefit from the experience and example of a proven program.

The Central College Approach: In 1975, an "across the curriculum" program was initiated at Central College in Pella, Iowa, which incorporated reading, writing, and speaking assignments into most classes. An ad hoc committee directed the program for several years until Central College received a National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) grant to expand the program and help develop expertise in teaching these three communication skills. …

This is the third biennial report on research and creative activity of the faculty, students, and research units at UNI. The interest In the Vietnam War is Increasing after years of being ignored. The body of literature about the Vietnam War is growing rapidly. Using this literature in high school courses to study the war is encouraged. Using literature to study a historical event personalizes it for the students.

The researcher read 45 novels and personal narratives about the Vietnam War. Each novel was tested for four values and inclusion of stereotyped secondary characteristics. One or more of the following values was present in 80 percent of the works: American involvement was wrong, American commanders were incompetent, South Vietnamese soldiers …

Since the 4th century B.C., arguments have pitted the relative merits of a liberal arts education against those of vocationalism. The liberal arts, with its classic traditions and broad curricular base, for centuries has been touted as the education of the privileged class, while a practical course of study benefitted the artisan and others needing a more immediate occupation. Since the late 1960s, vocationalism has enjoyed a period of intense popularity in the American educational system. This research was based on a concern for libraries in third world countries. A study of literature about public and school libraries in two developing countries in the Middle East was conducted. Based on the evidence that certain conditions were present in the United States and Europe before library development began, this researcher isolated eight of these conditions to research whether they were in existence or growing in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Two hypotheses were-tested. First, political stability was evident. Secondly, evidence of growth in the following seven conditions were studied: education, economic growth, government commitment towards libraries, urbanization, presence …

Late Holocene Paleoecology Of Southeastern Iowa: Development Of Riparian Vegetation At Nichols Marsh, R. G. Baker, D. G. Horton, H. K. Kim, A. E. Sullivan, D. M. Roosa, P. M. Witinok, W. P. Pusateri

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Pollen, vascular plant and bryophyte macrofossils from peat and silt deposits that filled an oxbow lake near Nichols, Iowa provide a 2500- year record of wetland succession and of upland habitats. Radiocarbon dates of 2320 ± 90 yr B. P. (BETA 12514) near the base and 1260 ±70 yr B.P. (BETA-12513) midway up one section, and 1050 ±70 (BETA 12515) in another provide chronologic control. The pollen diagram indicates substantial changes in local wetland habitats, but less change in upland vegetation in the last 2500 years. Plant macrofossils record changes from a deep to a shallow oxbow lake during the …

Vegetation Communities And Flora Of Dolliver State Park, Webster County, Iowa, Cindy L. Johnson-Groh, Deborah Q. Lewis, Judy F. Shearer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Dolliver State Park flora includes 408 species of vascular plants, several of which are uncommon for central Iowa. Sixteen vegetation types were identified including four new vegetation types: Quercus macrocarpa type, Populus grandidentata type, Populus tremuloides type and calcareous seep type. The flora and vegetation of Dolliver are found to be similar to Ledges State Park and Woodman Hollow State Preserve. Hill prairies and savanna-like areas are much more abundant in Dolliver than these other areas along the Des Moines River.

If we look back on the history of education in the United States, we find many patterns of school organization. Prior to the establishment of middle schools, the middle level of schooling was commonly known as junior high school. According to Van Til, et al., (1967), the first junior high school was established at Columbus, Ohio in 1909. Since then, both the 8-4 plan and 8-5 plan, the standard organizational patterns used for public schooling in the United States after the Civil War, have been gradually changed to the newer form--the 6-3-3 plan. Behavioral Responses Of Drosophila Robusta And Drosophila Tripunctata In Response To A Temperature And Humidity Gradient, Ellen E. Hostert

Temperature may be a major factor limiting distribution and abundance of species in the wild. It may be the main influence determining the seasonal abundances of two native species, Drosophila robusta and D. tripunctata, both of which have been collected from a lowland forest . Survival studies indicate that D. tripunctata does not survive as well at high temperatures (27 and 30°c) as does D. robusta (Seager, unpublished data). This suggests that the responses of these two species when placed in a temperature and humidity gradient may be responsible for the difference i n seasonal abundances noted by Jennings et …
