An Annotated Bibliography Of Art Literature For Grades Four Through Eight, Shelly A. Johnson Jan 1985

An Annotated Bibliography Of Art Literature For Grades Four Through Eight, Shelly A. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

The visual arts, a discipline, with a history and knowledge base is a required component of the elementary and middle school curriculum. In order to learn the language of visual symbols resources are needed. The assumption that books which deal with various topics spanning the spectrum of art will provide a link between visual and verbal information and provide, in part, necessary assistance to students in their study of art is the premise on which this research paper is based.

As a result of research into available art related books at three school libraries, one public library and one university …

Teaching Values Through Drama, Greta Berghammer Jan 1985

Teaching Values Through Drama, Greta Berghammer

Faculty Publications

One dramatic technique to aid students in their discovery of values and value systems is "theatre-in-education" (TIE); a theatre event that takes place in schools; with actors working through roles for and with children. TIE aims to fuse education and theatre by having team members function as both teachers and actors; and the audiences of young people participate as both themselves and characters. TIE programs can be grouped into five categories ranging from full participation (category I); to full performance (category V). Topics that can be explored through TIE are personal freedom; peer pressure; and racial tolerance; leading students to …

Colonel Francis Parker And Beginning Reading Instruction, Elinor Woods Kline Jan 1985

Colonel Francis Parker And Beginning Reading Instruction, Elinor Woods Kline

Graduate Research Papers

In the late nineteenth century progressive educators advocated reforms in the educational system that were intended to humanize instruction. At the forefront of this movement was Colonel Francis W. Parker, a teacher and later an administrator who concerned himself with all aspects of the curriculum, including beginning reading. He was acclaimed by some as an innovator and attacked by others as a heretic. Parker's viewpoints concerning education countered the existing educational practices of the late 1800a. His beliefs concerning the teaching of reading were no leas radical to his time.

Elementary Social Studies: The Unit Method And Problem Solving, Sue Guenther Jan 1985

Elementary Social Studies: The Unit Method And Problem Solving, Sue Guenther

Graduate Research Papers

On many occasions, this writer has observed students sitting in desks arranged in near perfect rows, reading from the social studies text, and answering factual questions. Noting the lack of motivation for learning evidenced in these observations has sparked a desire to investigate the availability of materials and/or methods of teaching which provide better learning experiences in this curriculum area--social studies.

Flora And Phytogeographical History Of Ledges State Park, Boone County, Iowa, Cindy L. Johnson-Groh, Donald R. Farrar Jan 1985

Flora And Phytogeographical History Of Ledges State Park, Boone County, Iowa, Cindy L. Johnson-Groh, Donald R. Farrar

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Ledges State Park flora includes 437 species of vascular plants, several of which are unusual for central Iowa. The flora is surprisingly diverse considering its western location. The current distributions and occurrences of plants in the Ledges suggest the influence of historic plant migrations. The Ledges flora is composed of three elements, eastern mesophytic species, southern zerophytic species and northern boreal species. The dissected topography of the Ledges State Park has allowed boreal species, relics of northern forests, to persist in the protected canyon habitats.

The Loess Hills Of Western Iowa: A Problem In Phytogeography, Jean M. Novacek Jan 1985

The Loess Hills Of Western Iowa: A Problem In Phytogeography, Jean M. Novacek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Based upon personal observations over a four year period, a preliminary overview of the phytogeographical significance of the prairies of the Loess Hills of western Iowa is discussed, concentrating upon a few representative taxa. A number of Great Plains vascular plant species reach the easternmost edge of their ranges in the Loess Hills. Climatic changes during the Holocene Period, especially during the Hypsithermal Interval, have had great effects upon the vegetation of the Great Plains and upon the xerophytic components of the Loess Hills. In addition, recent extended drought episodes have affected the flora. It is postulated that the Missouri …
