The Relationship Between Language Development And Self-Concept In Selected Junior High School Students, Iwona Gradzka

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The study was designed to examine and define the relationship between language development and self-concept in junior high school students. Thirty students were selected on the basis of age. To measure language development and self-concept, the following instruments were employed: Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Revised, Verbal subtests (WISC-R, V); Verbal IQ; Draw-a-Person (D-A-P) Test; a teacher questionnaire; and observations of students. Correlations relied upon a simple and multiple regression. The statistical analysis was composed of two parts. The Basil And Josephine Stories: Fitzgerald's Incompatible Worlds, Marcia S. Schneiter Jan 1989

The Basil And Josephine Stories: Fitzgerald's Incompatible Worlds, Marcia S. Schneiter

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Typically, members of the middle-class of American society are fascinated by the extremely wealthy people of the upper-class. One can spend hours lost in daydreams about the lifestyles of the rich -- the intriguing and even famous people they encounter, the costly, luxurious garments they wear, or the delicacies they relish. To imagine such a life seems to lighten the drudgery of one's own, possibly acting as a stimulus and driving one towards seemingly unattainable goals. The lives of the extremely wealthy are virtually impossible for most middle-class people to imagine, and likewise life in middle America may be difficult …

The Role Of Environmental Education In The Elementary School, Lydia G. Hamm Jan 1989

The Role Of Environmental Education In The Elementary School, Lydia G. Hamm

Graduate Research Papers

The term "the environment" conjures up a parade of horribles. No reader of the newspaper needs to be told that we are plagued by pollution, erosion, species endangerment, and the dwindling of the resources on which industrial society depends. Each is inundated by the media with details--PCB spill, acid rain, increase of carbon dioxide, loss of estuaries and wetlands, the extinction of wildlife, dumping of toxic waste, and many more.

Literature-Based Social Studies Unit: Pioneers, Pamela J. Masmar

Graduate Research Papers

Bringing the people of pioneer times to life in the hearts and minds of fifth-grade students is possible through literature experiences. Huck (1979) states that much of the school instructional program is focused on knowing. Extending the program through literature creates and educates feelings as well as informs students.

The Status Of Three Uncommon Salamanders (Amphibia: Caudata) In Iowa, Jeffery D. Camper Jan 1988

The Status Of Three Uncommon Salamanders (Amphibia: Caudata) In Iowa, Jeffery D. Camper

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The smallmouth salamander [Ambystoma texanum (Matthes)], blue-spotted salamander (Ambystoma laterale Hallowell), and central newt [Notophthalmus viridescens louisianensis (Wolterstorff)] were studied in Iowa from fall 1982 through summer 1984. All three species have declined in abundance in Iowa. A. texanum is more abundant and widespread than was previously suspected, but is declining due to habitat destruction. Apparently, only two populations of A. laterale remain in Iowa. N. v. louisianensis has also declined due to habitat destruction, with only three populations known. All three species require ponds in or adjacent to forest. A. ta was found primarily in riparian …

Educating For The Future: An Examination Of Global Education, Jean K. Seeland

Graduate Research Papers

Comissioned [sic]by President Carter, the Global 2000 Report To The President (1982), stated that for hundreds of millions of the desperately poor, the outlook for food and other necessities of life will be no better in the year 2000. For many it will be worse. Life for most people on earth will be more precarious in 2000 than it is now unless nations of the world act decisively to alter current trends. (1982) stated that for hundreds of millions of the desperately poor, the outlook for food and other necessities of life will be no better in the year 2000. …

The Teaching Of Elementary Social Studies: A Classroom Teacher's Perspective, Kristi A. Wernimont Jan 1988

The Teaching Of Elementary Social Studies: A Classroom Teacher's Perspective, Kristi A. Wernimont

Graduate Research Papers

Elementary teachers have long sought answers to ease the frustration of teaching elementary social studies. It is a subject with great potential for integration with other subject areas, yet is restricted by textbook and classroom management problems, with ambiguous local, state, and national goals. The result is that programs range from a few individually developed, enlightening models to the notion that social studies is an insignificant subject in the elementary curriculum and thus needs little attention. The problem and confusion still exist--how should the subject of social studies be taught in the elementary classroom? Is the current practice of one …

Native Trees In An Urban Area: A Case Study Of The Waterloo Metropolitan Area Black Hawk County, Iowa, Alice Christine Robbins

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigates the history and role of the native forest in an urban area of about 100 square miles, encompassing the cities of Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Evansdale in Black Hawk County, Iowa. It examines various human influences in an attempt to determine how important each has been in preserving or destroying the natural forest.

The original forests in the study area were concentrated along the rivers and adjacent bluffs. The most serious impacts to the upland forests have been agriculture, residential and commercial development, whereas the floodplain forests have been most affected by industrial expansion, gravel mining, flood …

The Portrayal Of The European Immigrant In The Historical Fiction For Children And Young Adults, Gayle T. Wood Jan 1988

The Portrayal Of The European Immigrant In The Historical Fiction For Children And Young Adults, Gayle T. Wood

Graduate Research Papers

This research study used a content analysis technique to assess the portrayal of the European who emigrated to the United States from Europe between the years of 1832 and 1932. Portrayals were found in 15 works of historical fiction written for children or young adults and published after 1950 in the United States.

Descriptive occurrences in each book were examined for the realistic portrayal of the immigrant experience in six general areas: (1) the Americanization process, (2) the educational experience of the immigrant, (3) employment opportunities, (4) family relations, (5) conditions encountered during the emigration process, and (6) reasons for …

The Characteristics Of Elementary Teachers Perceived And Identified As Curricular Leaders, Celia R. Burger Jan 1988

The Characteristics Of Elementary Teachers Perceived And Identified As Curricular Leaders, Celia R. Burger

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of elementary teachers who were perceived and identified as being influential in curricular change by peers, principals, and district administrators. The study described characteristics which appeared to be shared by 16 elementary teachers selected from 20 elementary schools in one major school district in a Midwestern state.

Subjects were identified from responses by peers, building administrators, and district administrators to the Instructional Leadership Survey prepared by the researcher. Twenty teachers, identified as influential by all three of the surveyed groups, were considered teacher leaders in this study. Sixteen of the …
