Bibliography Of The Natural And Cultural History Of The Loess Hills Of Iowa, Dean M. Roosa, Darwin D. Koenig
Bibliography Of The Natural And Cultural History Of The Loess Hills Of Iowa, Dean M. Roosa, Darwin D. Koenig
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
A bibliography of literature on Iowa's Loess Hills includes references containing information on the cultural or natural history of chis western Iowa landform region. The bibliography is divided into six parts: general, archaeological, botanical, geological, historical, and zoological. Annotations are included only where necessary to clarify contents. Because of their rugged topography, the Loess Hills of western Iowa have resisted large-scale conversion to agriculture. This has permitted noteworthy persistence of native prairies and woodlands, along with their associated species. This bibliography complements two special issues of the Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science devoted to Iowa's Loess Hills.

Graduate Research Papers
During the early years of public school education, students were transported to and from school by their parents or family friends. However, by the end of the nineteenth century, the responsibility for transporting students began shifting from the parents to local school districts (Anthony and Inman, 1986). The second half of the twentieth century brought about changes in the services provided by student transportation programs. Services were expanded to include not only busing to and from school, but busing for desegregation purposes, transportation of students to and from athletic/extra-curricular activities, field trips for students, and the transportation of handicapped students …

Section Iv: Financing Rural Education In Iowa: Introduction
Section Iv: Financing Rural Education In Iowa: Introduction
Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series
The papers in this section address the issues of equity, quality and efficiency with respect to rural schools in Iowa. One author asserts that finance formulas should include a sparsity index, and provides clarity to the terms of equity for both students and taxpayers. A number of proposals are made in other papers for a new state funding formula to include: (1) incentives to move toward 170-180 cost efficient units; (2) equal dollars for educational programming; and (3) the recognition of local factors such as sparsity, geography, and topography. In addition, a proposal is made to determine those programs which …

Section Iv: Financing Rural Education In Iowa [Sasseen], Keith Sasseen
Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series
It would appear Iowans are caught in the dilemma of weighing alternatives to finance their schools. Many conflicts need resolution as decisions are being made as to what to finance as well as how to finance the rural schools. Changing demographics since the highlife of the late 1970's are quickly being brought into public focus because of the repeal of the current school funding formula of the 1987, 72nd General Assembly. The effect of this action through H.F. 499 was to 'sunset' the present Foundation program June 30, 1991 and to cause the enactment of a new program of school …

Section Vi: Redesigning Iowa Rural Schools: Sharing, Restructuring Or Consolidating [Ghan], Guy Ghan
Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series
The purpose of this School District Restructuring Report is to summarize the restructuring activities of 1987, chronicle the restructuring events for future reference, and analyze problems that developed during the year. This report, which has been produced annually for many years, is normally a more routine data based summary of events. However, an analysis of the events that took place during 1987 leads to the conclusion that a different style of writing is necessary if future generations are to use the Department's annual report to gain a true understanding of the large-scale changes that are taking place.

Holocene Vegetational Changes In Eastern Iowa, R. G. Baker, C. A. Chumbley, P. M. Witinok, H. K. Kim
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Pollen and plant macrofossil analysis from three sites along an east-west transect in southeastern Iowa provide evidence for Holocene vegetational development. Colo Marsh at the west end of the transect is relatively complete, with a late-glacial spruce zone ending about 11,500 yr B.P.; a deciduous forest zone from about 11,500 to 8300; a prairie zone from 8300 to 4500, and prairie with oak from 4500 to presettlement times.
Sediments from the site at the Indian Creek Nature Center, midway in the transect, date only from about 6000 to 1600 yrs B. P. This site also was dominantly prairie from 6000 …

In pockets of deep prehistory, humans made the first marks on their world. Those marks were completely new images, images that had not existed before. The painting and tooling on stone walls recorded and attempted to explain human interaction with the world. Languages, alphabets, systems of numbers and physical structures came much later. Each new tool eventually became interconnected with the others to produce more complex means of studying, recording and building the human-world relationship. These pockets of activity moved, merged, divided or died. The accumulations of perceptions, knowledge and technology continued to mix and reconnect.

Cross-Cultural Literacy: An American Imperative, Margaret Baird Davis
Cross-Cultural Literacy: An American Imperative, Margaret Baird Davis
Graduate Research Papers
The world is becoming a global village, say the experts. Just as individuals are dependent upon and, in turn, are depended on by their family, friends, and immediate communities, so are the nations of the world becoming highly interdependent (Brademas, 1987; Horne & Masson, 1988). The more this situation comes to pass, the more important does it become that we all make ourselves cross-culturally literate--that we become knowledgeable, that is, of the political and economic systems that exist around the world and of the many different ways people have of thinking, feeling, acting, and viewing things.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (in cooperation with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey) has made available an 11" x 17" color poster titled "Groundwater and Land Use in the Water Cycle." The poster illustrates various aspects of the water cycle from precipitation to transpiration and evaporation including runoff, erosion, saturation, groundwater movement and the location of and movement through various aquifers.

The United States Geological Survey has compiled two packets of teaching aids which vary according to purpose and grade level. One, "Teacher's Packet of Geologic Materials," is available to secondary teachers of earth science (for whom the contents were selected) and to college teachers of geology. Another packet, "Selected Packet of Geologic Teaching Aids," was compiled for elementary and secondary teachers of geography, social studies, general science, environmental education and oceanography.

Retelling A Czech Legend To Increase Cultural Awareness, Kathreen Pisarik
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to determine if popular Czech folklore could be located, rewritten and illustrated in a manner which would vivify aspects of ancient Czech life. A literature search and personal interviews revealed five legends which were well-known by most Czechs. heads of Czech societies in the United States verified which was the best known. The legend was then rewritten in picture storybook form and illustrated to convey information about the costumes, geography, and landmarks of these people.

Brain Laterality And Education, Jean L. Schryver
Graduate Research Papers
Although the brain functions as a whole unit with both sides being active, there are areas of specialization within the brain. Research indicates that the human brain is composed of two hemispheres, which are capable of functioning independently of one another. According to Michael Gazzaniga (1983), the left hemisphere is responsible for linear, symbolic, sequential and verbal thought. The right hemisphere is responsible for holistic, concrete, random and pictorial thoughts. The left can be compared to a computer while the right is more creative and intuitive. Individuals tend to develop a preference for using one side over the other, although …

Rearing conditions, such as temperature and humidity, may change behavior of Drosophila species so they behave differently than wild flies. The duration fruit flies are maintained in the laboratory prior to experimentation may cause genetic changes in the organism, due to selection, inbreeding, and drift. These genetic changes may lead to different responses to a temperature and humidity gradient by long-time laboratory reared stock and stock newly obtained from the wild. Past research revealed that Drosophila robusta and Drosophila tripunctata reared at 20ºC for five years in the laboratory preferred 20.0oC and 19.2oC respectively when they were allowed to move …
