The Credibility Problem In The Field Of Speech, Janis Myers
The Credibility Problem In The Field Of Speech, Janis Myers
Iowa Journal of Communication
All through high school and college the hidden truth that "speech lacks credibility as an intrinsically valuable discipline" escaped me. Only after I graduated with a speech major, public speaking emphasis, and found my first teaching job did reality hit. I overheard my new colleague, who, incidentally, coaches oral interpretation, say, "Why did they hire someone with a nothing major like that?" In the seven years of teaching that followed, I realized "speech" lacks credibility throughout the state of Iowa. Here, as elsewhere, administrators can't be convinced to incorporate speech as a requirement in addition to the standard writing and …
Junior High Speech And Drama Activities, Larry Brandstetter
Junior High Speech And Drama Activities, Larry Brandstetter
Iowa Journal of Communication
Students anticipate moving on to junior high. On their first day of "secondary school", they are told about the athletic program, the music program, and the candy and magazine sales for the new band uniforms. This is the beginning of their introduction into the extra-curricular life of every school di strict. Where are those people who represent our field of interest? Where are those teachers who direct school plays, teach drama courses, coach the debate teams, get students ready for speech contest, train students in mime, direct readers' theater? The people who were trained to be secondary school teachers of …

Oral Communication Instruction For Special Education Students, David G. Hach
Oral Communication Instruction For Special Education Students, David G. Hach
Iowa Journal of Communication
Students placed in a special education class labeled multi-categorical, self-contained with integration (MC-SCI) possess a wide variety of educationally handicapping conditions. The term multi-categorical means that in the class at any one time you may find students diagnosed as being learning disabled, emotionally disturbed or mentally disabled-educable. The term self-contained with integration legally defines the amount of service the students placed in the class may receive. As opposed to a resource program, in which a student may receive no more than two hours of special programming per day, in the SCI class, the teacher may be responsible for nearly total …
A Review Of The Literature On Peer Counseling Programs, Claude Bartley Snead Iii
A Review Of The Literature On Peer Counseling Programs, Claude Bartley Snead Iii
Graduate Research Papers
The field of counseling has rapidly expanded during the past two decades while seeking more effective and more efficient means of helping people meet individual and collective needs. Concurrently, American society has witnessed an intense increase in personal and social problems. Educational institutions have been plagued with acts of disruption and violence. The family system has been jolted by an unprecedented rise in the divorce rate which was recently projected at a ratio of one divorce for each two marriages (U. S. Dept. of Justice, 1975). The emotional well-being of the citizenry has often been questioned in light of the …

Tasks Performed By Nonprofessionals In Elementary School Media Centers In Four Area Education Agencies In Iowa, Barbara J. Beebe
Graduate Research Papers
Nonprofessionals or aides in the media centers are an important part of an effective educational media program. They are essential as support staff to strengthen and complement the services that can be provided.
This study was conducted to determine (1) what tasks are media nonprofessionals performing? (2) what tasks , if any, are media nonprofessionals performing which are usually considered to be tasks which are the responsibility of certificated media professionals and (3) how many, if any, appear to be supervising and instructing students without themselves being supervised by a media professional?
A questionnaire was sent to the media center …
An Engineer Looks At The Creationist Movement, John W. Patterson
An Engineer Looks At The Creationist Movement, John W. Patterson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This paper is based on a presentation given in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to the Iowa Academy of Sciences on Saturday, April 25, 1981. The observations are derived from the extensive interactions I've had with creationists and anti-creationists over the past 3 to 4 years. These interactions include written correspondence, careful evaluation of manuscripts and published papers, many conversations, attendance at hearings and debates on creationism, and participation in two creation/evolution debates. The opinions expressed are my own, not those of my university or department.
A Measurement Of Improved Self-Esteem In Third Grade Students With Elementary Counselor Intervention, Ann Margaret Jamason
A Measurement Of Improved Self-Esteem In Third Grade Students With Elementary Counselor Intervention, Ann Margaret Jamason
Graduate Research Papers
In recent years, school counselors have become an important and essential part of the educational team. As educators become more aware of the needs of individual children, educators have worked more closely with school counselors in both identifying the problems of individual children and developing programs to help individual children. At the elementary level, counselors have been working in the affective domain of children's lives to emphasize the importance of communication (Getz, Morrill, 1978). By developing skills in communication, counselors have learned the concerns that children have about themselves. Realizing that children begin to develop their self-esteem at an early …

The Role Of The School Counselor In Helping Chronically Ill Students, Nancy Camp Warren
The Role Of The School Counselor In Helping Chronically Ill Students, Nancy Camp Warren
Graduate Research Papers
Statistics kept since the passage of the National Cancer Act in 1971 indicate that slow but significant gains in lengthening the life span among many cancer patients have been made. The five-year survival rate for seven of the fourteen cancers in children and adolescents including all leukemias, Wilm's tumor, Hodgkin's disease, and neuroblastomas has increased dramatically. Dr. Edward Beattie Jr., Director of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York City, estimates that half of all cancer patients could now be cured, meaning to live their lives without a recurrence of their cancer, if all the available diagnostic and treatment techniques were …
Unusual Beach Deposits In Oolite Carbonate Environments Mississippian And Recent, A. J. Gerk, C. O. Levorson
Unusual Beach Deposits In Oolite Carbonate Environments Mississippian And Recent, A. J. Gerk, C. O. Levorson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Thousands of small fossils were collected from unusual lenses within the Cyathophyllum Zone, Gilmore City Limestone (Mississippian) in a large quarry near Humboldt, Iowa. These rare lenses occur in an interval 1-2.5m thick that shows an extreme variability of facies. An intensive search of other Gilmore City outcrops revealed no similar lenses. The rest of the interval, outside the lenses, contained larger fossils and fossil fragments. The small fossils in the lenses are remarkably well preserved, the gastropods particularly so. Comparison of the Gilmore City Limestone with Recent oolitic deposits at Paradise Island in the Bahamas leads to the conclusion …
Blind Clients Perceptions Of Sighted Counselor's Empathy In The Counseling Relationships, Mae Porter
Blind Clients Perceptions Of Sighted Counselor's Empathy In The Counseling Relationships, Mae Porter
Graduate Research Papers
The research paper was designed to study the ability of sighted counselors to counsel blind clients with empathy. While blindness should not pose a difficulty, many sighted counselors do have difficulties working with blind clients. Based on the research done for the study, this problem occurs mainly because of their difficulties in distinguishing empathy from sympathy. A major problem is the counselor's understanding of his/her own feelings about the blind client. Many counselors cannot get beyond the label "blind" and view the total person, not simply the handicap.

The Motion Picture Patents Company: A Monopoly, Rhonda A. Abbott
Graduate Research Papers
My interest in the subject of motion pictures extends far past the development and the significance of the Motion Picture Patents Company. It does so because the history and changes in the film industry appear to both directly and indirectly reflect the history of the cultural, social, and economic trends of the period.
Parental Perception Of Nursery School Education, Ömür Bozkurt
Parental Perception Of Nursery School Education, Ömür Bozkurt
Graduate Research Papers
Early childhood education has been a part of man's history for many years. Psychologists have pointed out that the first four or five years of a child's life is the period of most rapid growth and greatest susceptibility to environmental influences. Early childhood educators have been equally outspoken regarding the need for early childhood programs to supplement the home experience of children between the ages of three and six years. Evidence suggests that early childhood programs have positive effects on the child (Moore, 1978). Parents enroll their children into early childhood programs for different reasons such as socialization, education or …

A Study Of The Teaching Of Literature And The Place Of The Literature Of Iowa In The Secondary English Curriculum, Carol B. Mcmullen
A Study Of The Teaching Of Literature And The Place Of The Literature Of Iowa In The Secondary English Curriculum, Carol B. Mcmullen
Graduate Research Papers
To a teacher of English in an Iowa high school, it is amazing to find the literature of Iowa is not included in the English curriculum. Anthologies may include a short story by Hamlin Garland or one by Ruth Suckow, but often students are unaware these are Iowa authors. Even the history of Iowa is mandated in the Iowa curriculum. The omission of Iowa literature is disturbing, especially when a wide variety of other literary works are used.

The Influence Of Spelling Instruction Of Basal Vocabulary Words On The Comprehension Performances Of Third Graders, Dawn M. Williams
The Influence Of Spelling Instruction Of Basal Vocabulary Words On The Comprehension Performances Of Third Graders, Dawn M. Williams
Graduate Research Papers
Two successive intact third grade classes were involved in a study to test the hypothesis: If spelling instruction is coordinated with the basal reader by teaching the spelling of the basal vocabulary words, then reading comprehension performance will be greater than when an uncoordinated spelling-reading program is used. To determine comparability, the control and experimental groups were analyzed using the Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test and the reading subtest of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills resulting in no significant differences between groups concerning IQ and prior reading achievement. The control group used Spelling: Words and Skills for its uncoordinated spelling-reading …

Archetypes And The Large Organization: A Comparison Of Family And Management Roles, Ann Lowry Goodell
Archetypes And The Large Organization: A Comparison Of Family And Management Roles, Ann Lowry Goodell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Economic realities, divorce, and the feminist movement have forced or encouraged women to retain their ties with the labor force. Unfortunately, these ties have been strained by accusations of incompetence, negative attitudes concerning affirmative action policies and concern over role conflicts. The issue which emerges is an issue concerning the role performances of women: are women competent in the labor force? Are women more subject to and influenced by role conflict than men? Are women's performances being accurately perceived by their superiors, colleagues, and subordinates? Before any of the questions can be addressed, an in depth analysis of the roles …
Communication Rules And Negotiation Strategies: A Case Study, Ruth A. Brenner Hunt
Communication Rules And Negotiation Strategies: A Case Study, Ruth A. Brenner Hunt
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This case study examined negotiation tactics and strategies by challenging the theoretical basis for and actual use of William Donahue's negotiation interaction coding system. Three subproblems investigated the coding categories' construct validity, the negotiators' coordination and co-orientation, and their constitutive and regulative rules.
The method involved naturalistic observation in a quasi-experimental simulation of a civil suit, out-of-court proceeding. Twenty subjects role-played as attorneys for the plaintiff and defendant. Five pairs were students in a college course on negotiation, and five pairs were professionals whose work required bargaining skills.
The negotiators were given hypothetical case "facts" and encouraged to role play …
