Communication By Writing: A Basic Part Of Science Education, Donald L. Schmidt, Robert S. Tapply Jan 1982

Communication By Writing: A Basic Part Of Science Education, Donald L. Schmidt, Robert S. Tapply

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

No responsible educator would deny that an educated person should have the ability to express himself in writing. One must not lose sight of this basic idea when teaching science. Far too often, science students communicate through definitions, symbols and technical terminology without making the attempt to combine a series of meaningful phrases which communicate an individual's understanding of science in a comprehensible way. The responsibility for teaching communication by writing in science rests clearly with the science teacher, who must develop strategies within the framework of the discipline to involve students in the process of writing.

Let Me Out, Cherin Lee Jan 1982

Let Me Out, Cherin Lee

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Why are walls, floors, and ceilings so inviting? What is the lure of a classroom when compared to the lure of being outside? It's quite surprising that more science students and teachers aren't clamoring "Let me Out!"

Science educators are frequently looking for activities to take them out of classroom settings. Such an activity evolved during a seminar at UNI called Innovative Biology Teaching. The challenge was to develop a teaching technique for a single concept using the outdoors at the particular time of the assignment. This was late October and early November, not a favorite time for many teachers …

Demonstrating Density Jan 1982

Demonstrating Density

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The concept of density is difficult for the average seventh or eighth grade student to understand. Most of the current physical science textbooks, however, include it as one of the characteristic properties used to distinguish between various materials. The following demonstration has proven useful in promoting inquiry discussions when the concept of density is introduced.

Women In Science: A Developing Country, Doris Simonis Jan 1982

Women In Science: A Developing Country, Doris Simonis

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Because teenaged girls generally avoid classes in physical sciences and advanced mathematics, they reduce their career options. Even highly talented young women do not pursue science in numbers proportionate to their share of the college student population.

One way of examining this problem of underrepresentation is to recognize that women have been effectively isolated from the kinds of encouragement, feedback and experiences that their brothers have had in family, educational, social and occupational situations. Independence in thought and action rarely wins praise for a girl, and mechanical as well as intellectual attainments are likely to get approval only if they …

Career Planning Programs And Processes For Undergraduate Students, Marilyn C. Hawkins Jan 1982

Career Planning Programs And Processes For Undergraduate Students, Marilyn C. Hawkins

Graduate Research Papers

College students, traditional or non-traditional, experience a state of development in which they are searching to discover themselves. Chickering (1969) assumes that they are searching to discover what he has labeled the seven developmental vectors. They are: achieving competency, managing emotions, becoming autonomous, establishing identity, freeing of interpersonal relations, clarifying purposes and developing integrity. The student may face difficulty in adjusting to these developments because of peer and family pressures and because of the need to maintain a stable academic life. To ease the transition period, they are in need of understanding and mature role models. These role models should …

Counseling Needs Of Police Officers, Gehrig K. La Velle Jan 1982

Counseling Needs Of Police Officers, Gehrig K. La Velle

Graduate Research Papers

For many years business and industries have been slow to identify and provide for many needs of workers. Because of union movements in the last fifty years, the worker has achieved a variety of benefits: increased wages, comprehensive medical care, retirement programs, etc. The evolution of mental health coverage has grown from worker pressures to simple economics. A healthy worker is a productive worker and a productive worker increases corporate profit.

A Student Milieu Evaluation Wartburg College, 1981-82, John Douglas Kirchner Jan 1982

A Student Milieu Evaluation Wartburg College, 1981-82, John Douglas Kirchner

Graduate Research Papers

Traditionally, colleges and universities have set up and changed institutional curriculum, policies, services, and physical spaces in an effort to aid in the education of their students. This educational effort unfortunately was often misguided, since it was rarely done on the basis of a systematic survey of student need. Students who did not adjust to the campus environment were either referred to a service to help them make the necessary adjustment or eased out of school.

A Comparative Study Of The Involvement Of Dropouts And Graduates In High School Activities, Randall Charles Nichols Jan 1982

A Comparative Study Of The Involvement Of Dropouts And Graduates In High School Activities, Randall Charles Nichols

Graduate Research Papers

In recent years, schools have been faced with an increasingly burdensome .financial strain as prices for fuel and supplies climb, maintenance costs grow, teacher associations demand better salaries and benefits for their members, and governmental regulations multiply. These .increased costs, combined with decreasing income due to declining enrollments, have severely pinched public schools' ability to continue to provide current programs. On top of this, schools confront a depressed economy and taxpayer cries for economic accountability. Schools find themselves increasingly forced to consider the possibility of eliminating programs.

The Effects Of Active Listening And Feedback On The Communication Relationship, Paul J. Kaufmann, Rebecca A. Lensch Jan 1982

The Effects Of Active Listening And Feedback On The Communication Relationship, Paul J. Kaufmann, Rebecca A. Lensch

Iowa Journal of Communication

The relationship two people establish as a result of their conversation is affected by the relational perceptions as well as the content exchange. Various schools of counseling, therapy, and communication agree that this relationship correlates with the effectiveness of the communication.

In a review of the research from the counseling and therapeutic perspective, Gardner writes: The evidence that the quality of a therapeutic relationship is a correlate of therapeutic change [therefore effective] lies not in the conclusive results of any one study, but rather in the repeated findings of a series of studies.

Since a satisfying relationship is central to …

Listening Bibliography, Lawrence Bernabo, John Mckiernan Jan 1982

Listening Bibliography, Lawrence Bernabo, John Mckiernan

Iowa Journal of Communication

The items in this bibliography were selected from three main sources: the Current Index of Journals in Education, Books in Print, and the University of Iowa library catalogue. Seeking to serve teachers and administrators at a wide variety of educational levels, we have sought to focus on items of primary interest for mainstream education in communication skills. We generally excluded items which dealt primarily with foreign languages, music, and the special techniques developed to teach handicapped students. We also sought to exclude the most technical articles. Finding that there still were too many items, we selected the most current books …

Response To Janis Myers By Mary Girvana, Mary Girvana Jan 1982

Response To Janis Myers By Mary Girvana, Mary Girvana

Iowa Journal of Communication

"A credibility problem exists and it stifles the recognition and growth of speech as an entity," is a statement that seems unsupported. The "credibility problem" of speech is probably no greater than the credibility problem (if there is one) of our public school system in Iowa.

Cathartic Listening As A Means Of Achieving Physician To Patient Empathy, Rolayne Destephen Jan 1982

Cathartic Listening As A Means Of Achieving Physician To Patient Empathy, Rolayne Destephen

Iowa Journal of Communication

Empathy is the accurate assessment of another's feelings of emotional state, and as such functions as a desired goal in physician/patient communication. Although virtually no argument exists in medical literature that accurate understanding of a patient's emotional state is a vital part of the physician's decision regarding treatment, little attention is given to providing doctors with guidelines for achieving an empathic awareness of the patient's feelings. This article will demonstrate the appropriateness of cathartic listening as a means for physicians to achieve patient empathy. Cathartic listening is an idea which stems from Steil's concept of communication which serves the purpose …

Speech Course Content As Viewed By Iowa High School Administrators And Teachers, Bill Henderson, Edward W, Woodd Jan 1982

Speech Course Content As Viewed By Iowa High School Administrators And Teachers, Bill Henderson, Edward W, Woodd

Iowa Journal of Communication

Educational background influences what is taught and valued in Iowa secondary speech classes. A survey taken in March, 1981, using skills identified by a Task Force of the Speech Communication Association indicates more training equals more SCA skills taught and more SCA skills valued. Further, Iowa administrators evaluate the same SCA identified skills more highly than do their teachers. A 1978 Joint Task Force Report on Teacher Preparation in Speech Communication and Theatre identified three major goals and ·subsequent competencies for teachers of speech and theatre in secondary schools. Goal 1: The speech communication specialist will organize programs in the …

Response To Janis Myers By Frances Langford, Frances S. Langford Jan 1982

Response To Janis Myers By Frances Langford, Frances S. Langford

Iowa Journal of Communication

I sadly agree with much of what Ms. Myers writes: there are credibility problems, there are image problems - and the causes are humans. I disagree that interpersonal communication is a vogue. I believe puppetry and improvisation are viable parts of drama courses. However, I, too, wonder how a substance abuse unit was incorporated in a speech course -- on the other hand, I know of one Iowa high school administration that supports a very successful unit on death in an interpersonal course.

Response To Larry Brandstetter's Concerns, Frances S. Langford Jan 1982

Response To Larry Brandstetter's Concerns, Frances S. Langford

Iowa Journal of Communication

I have several thoughts about Mr. Brandstetter's concerns to share. First, I was lucky - El Dorado, Kansas, was lucky - the high school debate coach was one of the first persons to seek me out when I arrived as a first year teacher. He promised me a steak dinner if I introduced debate to my 7th graders. This type cooperation and early indoctrination may particularly account for the strong debate programs in Kansas schools. Iowa speech and drama directors might take a similar tack in their local junior high schools.

Inservice Preferences Of Local Education Association Ipd Chairpersons And High School Principals Of Northeast Iowa, Craig Alan Gingrich Jan 1982

Inservice Preferences Of Local Education Association Ipd Chairpersons And High School Principals Of Northeast Iowa, Craig Alan Gingrich

Graduate Research Papers

The success of our educational system today depends upon many factors, including recruitment of quality individuals into the profession, good preservice training, and the provision of adequate funds to support research, programs, facilities, and salaries. Teacher Inservice Education (TISE) is crucial because knowledge, society, and teachers are all subject to continuous change. "Teachers can not be prepared in one, two, three, or four years (Lord James 1972, p. 107)."

Nsta Report, Robert L. Fisher

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

I recently participated in the Board of Directors' meeting of NSTA. I did not see despair, no throwing up of hands to say we have met our match. On the contrary, I saw highly optimistic individuals intent on making lemonade. You will read about these activities in future issues of your journals, but let me take a few minutes to highlight some of the meeting for you.

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Job Coordinator In Reducing Recidivism At The State Training School, Sharon L. Caldwell Jan 1982

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Job Coordinator In Reducing Recidivism At The State Training School, Sharon L. Caldwell

Graduate Research Papers

The State Training School in Eldora, Iowa, is where Iowa Juvenile Courts send their male adjudicated "delinquent" youths. There are five regular cottage units, a reception-diagnostic cottage unit and four specialized living units. The operating capacity is 238 and the average daily population for 1984 was 213 males between 13 and 17 years of age. There are two on-going programs for the students -- clinical and educational.

Comparative Judgments Of Secondary School Principals About Collective Bargaining As A Function Of Prior Non-Management Experience, Paul William Massman Jan 1982

Comparative Judgments Of Secondary School Principals About Collective Bargaining As A Function Of Prior Non-Management Experience, Paul William Massman

Graduate Research Papers

Collective bargaining has been in Iowa for only a short time. 1 Personal involvement and curiosity about the topic provided the intrinsic motivation for this study, The author organized and led a teachers' association in the first bargaining year and served as a grievance officer for that association for three years. Based on this involvement, the researcher was interested in ascertaining how administrator opinions have been affected by previous experiences with the bargaining process. What changes in opinions have new Iowa school administrators had when they changed sides of the bargaining table?

Criteria Used In Teacher Evaluation In Selected Northeast Iowa High Schools, Meredith C. Miller Jan 1982

Criteria Used In Teacher Evaluation In Selected Northeast Iowa High Schools, Meredith C. Miller

Graduate Research Papers

A primary responsibility of an administrator is to provide leadership and direction to personnel within the organization in an effort to realize maximum efficiency of operation. Not unlike the endeavors in the business world, educational administrators must accept as a primary responsibility the evaluation of personnel. As reported by Sapone, "The major purpose of an organization must be to coordinate the activities of its personnel toward greater educational efficiency and effectiveness." (34: 44) Ryans suggested that the goodness of an educational program is determined to a large extent by the teaching act. He went on to suggest that the identification …

The Relationship Between Declining Student Enrollment And School Closure Of Public School Districts In Iowa, William Patrick Sinnott Jan 1982

The Relationship Between Declining Student Enrollment And School Closure Of Public School Districts In Iowa, William Patrick Sinnott

Graduate Research Papers

In today's society the educational system has been assigned a broader and more complete responsibility for the total development of its' students. It is also the responsibility of the school system to provide the most efficient, economic and quality educational program available. At present there is a controversy over how to deal most effectively with the growing problem of declining enrollment in meeting these responsibilities. The complexities of whether to close a school or not, do not appear to balance solely on the school population. School closings are more than a numbers problem, they are also people problems. The growing …

An Evaluation Of The Usage Of The Career Information System Of Iowa In Secondary Subscriber Schools As Reported By C.I.S.I. Contact Personnel, Kim Sterling Greenwood

Graduate Research Papers

The Career Information System of Iowa (C.I.S.I.) has been a functioning part of the Department of Public Instruction (D.P.I.) since August 1, 1974. Its primary function has been "to provide each school's staff with information and assistance in order that the challenging career education task may be accomplished." (Eilbert & Crowley, 1975, p. 1)

Nature And Effect Of Bilingual Education Programs On Second Language Acquisition, Mark David Finanger Jan 1982

Nature And Effect Of Bilingual Education Programs On Second Language Acquisition, Mark David Finanger

Graduate Research Papers

Bilingual programs, a newcomer to public education, are struggling against the hardships which accompany stages of infancy. Historically, bilingualism has been attempted in American schools since the eighteenth century when early immigrants organized schools to educate their children. Even today, public school classrooms contain children from other countries speaking different languages, representing different cultures. An education which enhances this bilingual atmosphere seems appropriate to fulfill the needs of non-English-speaking children. However, bilingual education in America is being denied the attention it deserves; consequently, the bilingual education effort to implement successful programs is accompanied by numerous problems.

Is Anyone Out There Listening?, Ruth Ornberg Jan 1982

Is Anyone Out There Listening?, Ruth Ornberg

Iowa Journal of Communication

''What?" "What did you say?" "I wasn't ready. What's that; again?" "Huh?" "I couldn't get it all down. Would you repeat that please?" Repeat! Repeat! Repeat! My beginning attempts at teaching students how to listen came about as a result of my frustration with frequent responses like those above. I believe my students were also feeling frustration. They needed help- my help! I knew there had to be a way to improve listening behaviors, but I lacked the knowledge and skill needed to resolve the problem. I read everything I could find on the subject of listening and began to …
