Communication Across The Curriculum, Ellen A. Hay
Communication Across The Curriculum, Ellen A. Hay
Iowa Journal of Communication
The lifelong value of oral communication abilities has been well documented. Surveys of college graduates, employers, and corporate executives have emphasized the relationship between career success and sophisticated communication abilities. For example, when reporting interviews with thirty vice-presidents and division directors, Hauge concluded that skills in problem solving, communication, and interpersonal relations were most valued in high tech corporations.
Employment Interviewing Options For College Students Who Have Physical Handicaps, Barbara Eileen Weeg
Employment Interviewing Options For College Students Who Have Physical Handicaps, Barbara Eileen Weeg
Graduate Research Papers
College students who have physical handicaps, like most college students, can benefit from student services designed to help them cope with the transitions in their lives. Students who have physical handicaps are concerned about the transition from being a college student to becoming a professional employee. They are anxious about interviewing for their first professional full-time positions. An issue that job applicants who have physical handicaps should resolve before they interview for employment is whether, how, and when to disclose their handicaps to the interviewers (Huvelle, Budoff, & Arnholz, 1984). However, little information is available to assist applicants who have …

Helping Teachers Teach: The Principal's Role, Thomas P. Mossman
Graduate Research Papers
Those individuals in any way connected with education understand the pressures being p I aced upon them by outside forces to improve the product they offer. Perhaps no one individual understands the push for improvement more than the building principal. If a principal ls to improve the education offered in his building he must eventually look to his teachers as the ultimate key to that improvement (Boyer, 1986). As Fleming stated in 1986, if education is to be improved the teachers themselves must be improved good schools come from good teaching.

Formulating A School Discipline Plan, Neil Robert Mullen
Formulating A School Discipline Plan, Neil Robert Mullen
Graduate Research Papers
Discipline has long been identified as one of the foremost problems In the American educational system (Gallup, 1987). Feitler and Tokar (1982) found that 58% of their sample of teachers classified Individual students who continually misbehave as the primary cause of Job-related stress. Parents and teachers al Ike have criticized schools for lacking effective discipline plans. This must be a major concern of the school administrator because a quality educational environment relies upon good discipline (Ban, 1985).

Cooperative Learning: A Way To Build Social Skills Into Classroom Instruction Without Jeopardizing Achievement, Barbara Elaine Moine
Cooperative Learning: A Way To Build Social Skills Into Classroom Instruction Without Jeopardizing Achievement, Barbara Elaine Moine
Graduate Research Papers
Over the years there has developed a dilemma between instructional strategies that promote achievement and instructional strategies that promote social development. 1 The primary aim of schools is to prepare students for success in careers and adult responsibilities. An assumption is made that students will be able to successfully apply what they learn in school to future situations.

Group Process With Mildly Mentally Retarded Adults, Cynthia Sue Bombella
Group Process With Mildly Mentally Retarded Adults, Cynthia Sue Bombella
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of the paper was to examine the basic stages of group process as it pertains to the mentally retarded adult. As a group develops, there are noticeable differences in individual behavior and the structure and functioning of a group. Theorists have found it useful to perceive the group as moving through a number of stages during its life (Northen, 1969; Yolam, 1985). The identification of stages provides diagnostic clues for the counselor. That makes it possible for the counselor to understand where a group is in its development and what the counselor can expect in the future (Northen, …

Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese
Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Biotechnology is a diverse array of technologies which today are in various stages of evolution and development. To understand them and the potential application of these technologies to agriculture, it is helpful to consider them in a historical perspective. In addition, it is important to understand the interdependence of biotechnologies on traditional, well developed technologies. The commercial development of biotechnology is more difficult than imagined even as recently as five years ago. Also, the problems being addressed generally demand a much better understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the plant and animal systems under study. Nonetheless, there is a …
Training Of Student Services Paraprofessionals, Jennifer M. Kloberdanz
Training Of Student Services Paraprofessionals, Jennifer M. Kloberdanz
Graduate Research Papers
More publications have been devoted to paraprofessional training within the last five years (Ender and Winston, 1984), an indication that higher education is becoming more aware of the need to utilize paraprofessionals and that training programs must be developed to adapt to this trend. A student paraprofessional is an undergraduate or graduate student without extended professional training who is specifically selected, trained, and given ongoing supervision to perform some designated portion of the tasks usually performed by the professional (Delworth, Sherwood, Casaburri, 1974). The paraprofessional is generally involved in the central activity of the agency with which he/she is associated.

The Development Of Student Leadership Through Student Government And Student Organizations, Oren R. Griffin
The Development Of Student Leadership Through Student Government And Student Organizations, Oren R. Griffin
Graduate Research Papers
According to Wilton Pruitt (1965), Dean of Student Personnel Services at Trenton State College, "leadership is a functional complex of attitudes, sensitivity, and skill, rather than a special ability held by an elect few" (p. 35). Too often, people are elected to an office and are quickly, without question, identified as leaders. Whether it is on a college campus or in city government, winning an election does not qualify one as a leader. A leader is one with the ability to function effectively in groups and to motivate others. More specifically, leadership is, as defined by Mabey (1985), "... being …

The investigation will be done with the aid of the scanning electron microscope {SEM).
Communication Between Administrators And Staff, Timothy Robert Bell
Communication Between Administrators And Staff, Timothy Robert Bell
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of communication between administrators 1 and staff. Shortt {1987) suggested that historically there has been a communication gap between school administration and staff. He asserted that effective administrators have many qualities; however, communication skills are the ones that may have the most direct impact on positive school climate. It seems apparent that closing the communication gap between administrator and staff has an impact upon positive school climate.

A Study Of Contemporary Practice In Teacher Evaluation, Dennis Laverne Washington
Graduate Research Papers
With the passage of the Stull Act in California, the race to evaluate was on! Assembly Bill 293 called for the following provisions: Boards of education must have written guidelines which contain (a) standards of expected student progress, (b) assessments of certificated personnel competencies as related to the standards for each classification, (c) assessments of other duties as adjuncts to regular assignments, and (d) the establishment of procedures and techniques for ascertaining that the employee is maintaining proper control of the learning situation. (California Board of Education, 1972). This bill gave impetus to the already well developed trend toward quantifying …
Variables Affecting The Deaf Student's Achievement In Reading, Rebecca A. Budensiek
Variables Affecting The Deaf Student's Achievement In Reading, Rebecca A. Budensiek
Graduate Research Papers
Reading and writing skills are generally considered to be the primary educational needs of deaf children. Although the field of deaf education is fraught with controversy regarding the most desirable communication mode for the deaf (i.e., oral or sign language or a combination), on one thing the experts agree: The deaf need to learn to read and write the language of their peers with normal hearing. It may appear on the surface that reading and writing instruction would be obvious tools in helping these individuals develop language proficiency. However, years of experience have shown that typical deaf individuals do not …

This paper reviews research on cerebral dominance and considers the relevance of this research to education. Conclusions from research are outlined and the implications of hemisphericity are discussed for educators. The research cited reviews the findings of neuroscientists that specifically relates to the functioning of the two hemispheres of the brain. Materials selected for inclusion in this paper speak to the research that either implies or states strategies that teachers may apply to classroom practice. To facilitate an understanding of the functioning of the two hemispheres, a portion of the paper speaks to the generalized functions of each hemisphere on …
