Editor's Corner - Support And Growth Revisited, Carl W. Bollwinkel Jan 1988

Editor's Corner - Support And Growth Revisited, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The editorial in the Autumn 1987 issue of ISTJ was entitled "Support and Growth." Growth for ISTJ was deemed essential. Support was lacking in some essential aspects. As editor, I had decided it was time to step aside so that the Academy could find the support and provide the opportunity for growth. Since that editorial was written, support has been found and I am pleased to be able to accept reappointment as ISTJ editor. Revisiting the topic of support and growth now seems important.

Plato's Metaphoric Bridge Between Being And Becoming, Roy Schwartzman Jan 1988

Plato's Metaphoric Bridge Between Being And Becoming, Roy Schwartzman

Iowa Journal of Communication

Plato's writings abound with colorful analogies and comparisons, such as the myth of the charioteer, the tale of the world's creation, and the myths of the sun, the cave, and the divided line. The value and aesthetic appeal of the Platonic mythos can be traced to the nature of metaphor. The objective of this essay is to demonstrate how metaphor parallels the process of Platonic love. The relationship between Plato's reliance on metaphor and his understanding of love should help to dispel the conception that metaphor functions primarily as a stylistic ornament, at best an expendable addition to Platonic philosophy. …

Parental Involvement In Residential Treatment Facilities For Children, Michelle Suzanne Herman Jan 1988

Parental Involvement In Residential Treatment Facilities For Children, Michelle Suzanne Herman

Graduate Research Papers

As the function of residential child care shifted from orphanages to treatment facilities, the attitudes toward parental involvement also changed. Parents were no longer viewed as interruptive, and the parent-child emotional bond was recognized as superseding physical separation (Simmons, Gumpert & Rothman, 1973). The advent of systems theory and family therapy brought new conceptualizations which added 1 the dynamics of interpersonal relationships to the intrapsychic behavioral modes, challenging child care professionals to integrate these theories into treatment programs.

Growing Up Too Fast, Cynthia Rapp Hartman Jan 1988

Growing Up Too Fast, Cynthia Rapp Hartman

Graduate Research Papers

A content analysis technique was used to examine 16 children's books to determine whether the growth and development of the 24 main characters fit the growth and development of real-life children of the same chronological age.

Books published since 1982 with main characters who were eight, nine, ten, and eleven years of age were selected from Booklist and Best Books for Children. ·Descriptions and actions of the main characters were examined in the categories of general behavior, self-concept, social relations, and school orientation. Four hypotheses relating to these four categories were rejected and the researcher concluded that as depleted in …

Implementation Of Cooperative Learning By An Elementary Principal, Laurel S. Rector Jan 1988

Implementation Of Cooperative Learning By An Elementary Principal, Laurel S. Rector

Graduate Research Papers

Goodlad's (1984) extensive study of "what is" and "what ought to be" throughout the nation's educational system was documented in A Place Called School. Schools are faced with the painful realization of the need for change and the need to develop the ability to support continual, positive growth at all levels of the educational system. At the individual school level, a principal can meet this challenge by supporting the implementation of cooperative learning.

Facilitating Peer Tutors In Elementary School Guidance Programs, James Langholz Jan 1988

Facilitating Peer Tutors In Elementary School Guidance Programs, James Langholz

Graduate Research Papers

Peer tutoring is perhaps one of the greatest sources for mobilizing unused potentialities for learning and for controlling the factors which block or retard learning. The failure to use peer tutors in a variety of forms is a major source of waste in schools (Wagner, 1982). Society holds to an ideal that children will grow into responsible citizens who care for and help others. Yet, rarely do schools permit children to assume and practice these responsibilities. Nor do schools systematically supervise or actively shape effective helping behaviors (Jenkins & Jenkins, 1981).

Thirty-six titles compose the final annotated list. It is divided into six categories: autobiography, child development, …

Profile Of The Alcoholic Woman, Jacqueline W. Carter Jan 1988

Profile Of The Alcoholic Woman, Jacqueline W. Carter

Graduate Research Papers

Although there are gender differences in alcoholism, the definition of alcoholism is the same for women as it is for men. The American Psychiatric Association (Packard, 1986), the National Council on Alcoholism (Estes, 1982), and the World Health Organization (Kinney and Leaton, 1978) all define alcoholism as a chronic disease manifested by excessive drinking which causes a continuing problem in any area of a person's life including physical and mental health, interpersonal relations, and social and economic functioning.

The Perceptions Of Faculty Concerning The Role Of Student Services In A Comprehensive Community College, Russell Louis Curley

Graduate Research Papers

The comprehensive community college is a complex organization which serves a diverse population including liberal arts/transfer, career vocational, and continuing education students. This diversity of students requires a diversity of student services. The Assessment Of Client Satisfaction With Mental Health Services: A Review For The Practitioner, Mervin Michael Carnahan Jan 1988

The Assessment Of Client Satisfaction With Mental Health Services: A Review For The Practitioner, Mervin Michael Carnahan

Graduate Research Papers

In the last several years, mental health providers have realized the importance of assessing the consumer's (client or patient) satisfaction with their services (Loff, Trigg, & Cassels, 1987). This is in part due to a legislative change regarding Community Mental Health Centers. The 1975 amendments to the Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) Act require centers to assess and evaluate (among other topics) the "acceptability of services" (Windle & Paschall, 1981). While governmental programs have been mandated to become more accountable, even private agencies have felt some pressure to show whether clients are satisfied with the counseling provided (Royse, 1985). Today, …

Impact Of Parental Divorce On The Lifestyle Outlook Of Young Adult Children, Beverlye J. Nelson Jan 1988

Impact Of Parental Divorce On The Lifestyle Outlook Of Young Adult Children, Beverlye J. Nelson

Graduate Research Papers

One of the more disturbing social phenomena in recent years has been the escalating divorce rate. It is estimated that one-half of all marriages initiated in the 1980 1s will end in divorce (Cherlin, 1981). Out of these marriages and divorces, 60% of the couples who divorce each year have at least one child 18 or younger (Glick, 1979). Glick also predicted that by 1990, 33% of North American children will experience their parents' divorce before their 18th birthday.

Nursing Home Admission: Effects, Predictors Of Well-Being And Implications For Counseling, Carla Pletsch Janssen Jan 1988

Nursing Home Admission: Effects, Predictors Of Well-Being And Implications For Counseling, Carla Pletsch Janssen

Graduate Research Papers

Admission to a nursing home is a stressful life event demanding changes in all aspects of living. Becoming a nursing home resident was perceived by subjects in Gordon's study (1985) to be the third most stressful life event preceded only by death of a spouse and divorce and followed by pregnancy and retirement. Researchers have disputed the direct relationship of relocation trauma to mortality (Borup 1983), but agree that certain factors increase the older person's vulnerability to the stresses of relocation.

Vonnegut's Galapagos: The Myth Of Art, Vice Versa, (Or Something), David J. Gibson

Draftings In

There exists an inherent difficulty in the reading of any of Kurt Vonnegut's works. That is, the circular nature of his tales always leads you from struggling with one topic or concept to struggling with another related, but slightly different approach to the given work. Before you know it you are back where you started, perhaps somewhat more enlightened, but usually just a bit more perplexed. Such is the nature of the process of re-reading.

Celie And Hagar: Sisters In Time, Pat Fortin Jan 1988

Celie And Hagar: Sisters In Time, Pat Fortin

Draftings In

What separates the experiences of a Hebrew slave-woman from a 20th century black woman? Except for time, apparently, not much. As one compares and contrasts the lives of Hagar, an Egyptian slave described in Phyllis Trible's Texts of Terror, and Celie, a southern black woman presented in Alice Walker's The Color Purple, one finds similarities even though these women lived in different cultures thousands of years apart. These similarities include the authors' use of language, and the oppression, bondage, and flight to freedom these women share.

Working With Sue: Profile Of A Learning Disabled Student Entering College, Sara Baumhover

Draftings In

At the beginning of the spring semester, 1987, I was given a routine notice that I would be working with a new student on an on-going basis. The referral in her folder said that she had extensive problems with writing and would need some extra help. I had been working in our college writing lab, the Center for Academic Achievement, for three-and-a-half years, so I wasn't exactly intimidated by this information. I was more curious as to what kinds of help this student would need, and whether or not I could give them to her.
