The Impact Of Childhood Death On The Surviving Sibling, Patricia J. Rottinghaus Jan 1992

The Impact Of Childhood Death On The Surviving Sibling, Patricia J. Rottinghaus

Graduate Research Papers

When a child is dying of kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, or cancer, the child is referred to as "the victim of chronic or terminal illness". That child is not the only victim. The destructive effects of such diseases spread to all members of the families of those affected. New events and activities such as the care of the patient, trips to the hospital, and absences of family members due to hospitalizations become a part of the everyday lives of these families. Family life, as it was once known, no longer appears to exist. Even periods of remission of the child's …

Children Of Alcoholics: Implications For Counselors And Schools, Martha Jean Mcnutt Port Jan 1992

Children Of Alcoholics: Implications For Counselors And Schools, Martha Jean Mcnutt Port

Graduate Research Papers

Alcoholism is a disease of epidemic proportions in the United States. It is estimated that one-fifth of all Americans are problem drinkers (Cook, 1987). While alcoholism is generally recognized as a disease, it is not widely recognized as a family disease (Weddle & Wishon, 1986). However, alcoholism is a family illness because everyone in the family suffers. Parental alcoholism is a form of psychological maltreatment of 12-15 million children under the age of 18 (Tharinger & Koranek, 1988). McBride and Bennet (1991), Weddle and Wishon (1986), Roosa, Sandler, Gehring, Beals, and Cappo (1988), and Campbell (1988) all indicated that the …

Working With Stepchildren: The Role Of The School Counselor, Susan M. Johnson Jan 1992

Working With Stepchildren: The Role Of The School Counselor, Susan M. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

The structure of the family is constantly changing. Cherlin and Furstenberg (1983) predicted that by the year 2000, families of remarriages will be one of the types of families that dominate the personal lives of most Americans. A "remarried family" involves a married couple with the husband, the wife, or both in a second or subsequent marriage. Children under 18 in the home who were born before the remarriage occurred are considered stepchildren in the constituted stepfamily (Glick, 1988). Glick also reported that stepfamilies currently represent 17.4% of households with children under age 18 (Sims & Crosbie-Burnett, 1989).

A Demonstration Of Machine Control Using The Slc-150 Microprocessor Programmable Controller, Mike Courts, Richard Schmitz Jan 1992

A Demonstration Of Machine Control Using The Slc-150 Microprocessor Programmable Controller, Mike Courts, Richard Schmitz

Graduate Student Work

This project will use an Allen-Bradley SLC-150 microprocessor programmable controller to demonstrate an actual application being used in industry. The SLC-150 will be used to sequentially control a Pelco pan and tilt drive unit. This unit is mounted with a video camera that is used for security monitoring. The SLC-150 will also control the cameras zooming features.

Prior to microprocessors the electrical control of machines used input devices such as push buttons and limit switches connected to magnetically hard wired relay logic. Hard wiring meant that electrical wires were connected between all relay coils and contacts, making up what is …

Reflections On Educational Reform, Greg P. Stefanich Jan 1992

Reflections On Educational Reform, Greg P. Stefanich

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

It appears, particularly in press releases over the past decade, that criticism of American education is worthy of front page news. The press gives one the impression that teachers have failed, causing deteriorating conditions in our schools. Perhaps we need to reflect on some of the misrepresentations perpetrated by biased constituents who may have ulterior motives that are not in the best interest of quality education for our youth.

Focus Area Five: Links With Schools, William Waack, Carol Sue Sherbert Jan 1992

Focus Area Five: Links With Schools, William Waack, Carol Sue Sherbert

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The fifth issue addressed by a selected group of members of the Working Conference was links with the schools. The topic incorporated 4 of the 19 Postulates presented by Goodlad in Teachers for Our Nation's Schools. Postulate Fourteen encourages educators of educators to prepare future teachers to become change agents. Postulate Fifteen presents Goodlad's model of the "teaching school," cooperatively developed and run by universities and school districts. Postulate Sixteen involves the collaborative engagement of future teachers in a discussion of the conflicts between theory and practice. Postulate Seventeen is concerned with the establishment of linkages of teacher preparation institutions …

Self Inventory And Reflective Practice: A Personal Case Study, Charles K. Johnson Jan 1992

Self Inventory And Reflective Practice: A Personal Case Study, Charles K. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

As I began composing the final draft of this reflective paper, seeking to articulate a personal professional vision for administrative practice, two broad streams of influence became apparent. For the past four years I have been employed by the Sac and Fox Tribe at the school it operates on the Mesquaki Indian Settlement near Tama, Iowa. For the last two of those years I served as the school's administrator. Since this comprises the entirety of my working experience as an educator, my thinking, values, and beliefs are directly tied to the nature of that setting and the events which occurred …

Improving White Collar Productivity In A Shrinking Work Force, Brian Joy Jan 1992

Improving White Collar Productivity In A Shrinking Work Force, Brian Joy

Draftings In

The United States' economy continues to lag in comparison to that of many other developed countries. This is a situation to which American managers are not accustomed and for which they have not been prepared. Growth rates in the U.S. gross national product (GNP), for example, have been discouragingly low. Although the growth rate has been increasing over the past two decades, it still consistently lags behind the GNP growth rates of other industrialized countries. Figure 1 illustrates this problem.

Implementing Case: More Than The Purchase Of Software Packages, Claudia Ruggless Jan 1992

Implementing Case: More Than The Purchase Of Software Packages, Claudia Ruggless

Draftings In

Society and businesses depend on computer software. Retail stores use software to track inventory. Banks employ software to balance customer accounts. Since most businesses are so dependent on software, managers become extremely frustrated when software errors occur. Poor quality software result in frequent maintenance. When software developers are forced to spend a large portion of their time on maintenance, they have little time to work on new software projects. The result is a backlog of software to be developed and a reluctance on management's part to generate new software project ideas because of extended development time. Even when systems are …

Teaching Chemistry Safety: A Personal Issue, Judith Lemons Jan 1992

Teaching Chemistry Safety: A Personal Issue, Judith Lemons

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

As chemistry teachers, it is our moral and legal duty to make the laboratory a safe and healthy place for our students. However, safety policies will be most effective if the students share the responsibilities for promoting safety and preventing accidents. We can help to motivate our students to remember and apply safety principles if we make safety a personal issue for each student. I have found that a student will more readily comply with laboratory rules on a regular basis if the rules are important for that student, and that student has actively participated in the safety learning process.

An Inexpensive Indicator For Acids And Baths, Susan Christensen, Yvonne Smith Jan 1992

An Inexpensive Indicator For Acids And Baths, Susan Christensen, Yvonne Smith

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Is your shampoo acidic, neutral or basic? Put more simply: what is the pH level of your shampoo? Have you ever wished to find the correct answer to that question? If so, you can repeat the experiment that we did to find the pH, not only of your shampoo, but of many other things as well.

This project was completed for GB 303, Field and Lab Biology for Elementary Teachers, at Emporia State University. While looking through a book on teaching science to elementary children (Schmidt and Rockcastle 1982), one of us developed the idea of using red cabbage juice …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Jim Jarchow Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Jim Jarchow

Graduate Research Papers

Education has been a large and important part of my life for many years. I took my own education pretty much for granted, at least through the high school years. This seemed to be a common attitude. It was an attitude, however, that started to change during my college years, during my years of preparation in the field of education.

Analysis And Recommendations, Robert F. Long Jan 1992

Analysis And Recommendations, Robert F. Long

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

The Institute for Youth Leaders' 1992 National Youth Leadership Symposium contributed to the emerging youth development profession and attending academic discipline through a formal examination of the principles of moving " theory into practice." This theme was selected as the next step in a logical sequence of symposia themes. In 1990 the gathering established agreement on the critical competencies needed in youth development professional practice. The 1991 experience built on the set of competencies with the identification of common ground for professional development among the organizations serving the needs of youth. With agreement on the needed competencies and the common …

Student Affairs: In Search Of Ethics, Christine E. Hobbs Jan 1992

Student Affairs: In Search Of Ethics, Christine E. Hobbs

Graduate Research Papers

Recently, ethics has been a topic that higher education administrators have been examining with intense interest. Ethics and moral responsibility are the themes for educational journal articles, book chapters, and conferences. This interest has led many institutions of higher education in search of ethical standards and guidelines for their professional staffs. There are several reasons that ethics has come to the forefront.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Sally A. Strottman Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Sally A. Strottman

Graduate Research Papers

I decided to pursue a Master's Degree in Educational Administration after being encouraged by my school principal. She saw in me several personal characteristics she believed necessary for an elementary principal: a willingness to undertake tasks requiring time and organization, the ability to work with others to implement ideas into actions and complete a task, and the possession of ample communication skills to relate to a diversity of publics. Since I had been very active in several community organizations and was willing to assume some leadership roles in the school setting, this seemed a natural route for me to take.

Learning To Learn: Preparing Life-Long Learners, Maryellen S. Knowles Jan 1992

Learning To Learn: Preparing Life-Long Learners, Maryellen S. Knowles

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

While sitting in a breakfast booth in a quiet northwestern Iowa community, I overheard an elderly businessman say, "The more I learn about it the more excited I become!" He was talking about sailboat racing, but regardless of the topic, I was impressed with his excitement, his joy in discovery, his modeling of lifelong learning. Are not he and others open to new learning throughout their lives one of the primary goals of education at all levels? What will our students need to be able to know, do and be like as a result of education in our schools? Being …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Christina M. Windsor Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Christina M. Windsor

Graduate Research Papers

The progress of Black women must clearly be stated in the context of value and images which are our own not in the mirror of the dominant culture's values. As we move to fill new roles, and to create new roles, we must bring with us our own values. The progress of Black women, as Black women, is the measure of how well or how poorly this nation has been able to accommodate the unique perspectives of those once defined as inferior because we are Black, and unstable because we are women (Washington, 1988) .

Participative Collective Bargaining: Can It Work In An Educational Setting?, Sandra J. Waters Jan 1992

Participative Collective Bargaining: Can It Work In An Educational Setting?, Sandra J. Waters

Graduate Research Papers

Traditionally, collective bargaining in the educational setting has been likened to the industrial union model. School systems were built to reflect the industrial model of administration (Liontos, 1987). When teachers reached frustration levels over their inability to control fundamental aspects of their professional lives, they borrowed, like the school districts, a collective bargaining model from the industrial society (Glaser, 1989; Koppich and Kerchner, 1990) .

The Non-Problem Of Political Correctness, Randall C. Schluter Jan 1992

The Non-Problem Of Political Correctness, Randall C. Schluter

Iowa Journal of Communication

The PC hysteria probably will pass, as the mass media shifts its attention to fresher news. The nation's educational agenda is much too crowded for manufactured stories about the "new McCarthyism" to hold center stage for long. The real danger of this highly publicized academic "problem" is the residue of attitudes that might remain, influencing policy decisions about course content, educational approach, and even hiring. It is unlikely that any instructors will be tarred as PC Brown Shirts, but educator should take seriously the charges by Searle and other traditionalists that alternative perspectives are intellectually illegitimate. An educator worried about …

Real Politics: A Comment On "The Non-Problem Of Politcal Correctness", William Lewis Jan 1992

Real Politics: A Comment On "The Non-Problem Of Politcal Correctness", William Lewis

Iowa Journal of Communication

"Political correctness" is a label with an attitude. While it seems to have begun as an ironic reference by left-leaning academics to their own predilections, it quickly became a weapon in the hands of their opponents. "Political correctness" came to stand, not for the positions of the left, but for their (allegedly) dogmatic attitude and for their predictable responses to academic and political issues. Stories of persecution at the hands of the "PC police" have become commonplace, and those opposing political correctness have featured themselves (and have been featured in much of the national media) as a beleaguered minority fighting …

Rhetoric And Philosophy: "Transcending Historical Squabbles", Alan Brinton Jan 1992

Rhetoric And Philosophy: "Transcending Historical Squabbles", Alan Brinton

Iowa Journal of Communication

In a recent anthology, Rhetoric and Philosophy, Richard Cherwitz has assembled a collection of essays by various authors which explore the relationship between rhetoric and a number of philosophical points of view: realism, relativism, critical rationalism, idealism, materialism, existentialism, deconstructionism, and pragmatism. It is not from the contents of that anthology, though, that the present essay takes its start, but from remarks made in a review by William Keith. Keith has doubts about the usefulness of "the relegation of philosophy," as he puts it, "to a set of ‘isms’. With these doubts I think nearly every academic philosopher would …
