... To The Other Side Of The Desk: The Socialization Of Beginning Teachers, Bonnie Murphy

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

At the end of his five-year study of the education of educators John I. Goodlad (1990a) concludes that:

Few of the future teachers in our sample would begin their important work with a comprehensive grasp of the role of schools, with the ability to transcend subject matter and make it readily accessible to large numbers of their students, with the range and depth of instructional knowledge and skills requisite to promoting some significant learning in all children and youths and with the traits and abilities essential to working with colleagues on school renewal. (p. 190)

These people will be college …

The School Counselor's Role With Children Of Alcoholics, Rona Messmore Jan 1992

The School Counselor's Role With Children Of Alcoholics, Rona Messmore

Graduate Research Papers

They can be found in every classroom of every school district in the United States. They are a special group of children considered to be a high-risk population. They have their own problems that can cause minor to severe psychological wounds. They are children of alcoholics (COA's), and their lives are affected by alcoholism's "hidden curriculum" (Gress, 1988, p. 18), which indicates that these students have a set of hidden problems that often go unnoticed and unserved. Because so many students are affected, schools are obligated to provide a special curriculum to meet the needs of this vast population.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Christine L. Thompson Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Christine L. Thompson

Graduate Research Papers

The role of the elementary school principal is a many faceted one. Those of us entering the profession today are faced with meeting a variety of challenges and filling a number of different roles. There are many different areas that have been thought provoking in my studies in educational administration. As educators we have all been striving to create a positive impact on the leaders of tomorrow. However, in the role as principal we will, even more so than as classroom teachers, impact and hold the ability to make a difference in the task society has given us, educating our …

Striking A Balance: Accommodating And Challenging Student Differences, Peter Meidlinger Jan 1992

Striking A Balance: Accommodating And Challenging Student Differences, Peter Meidlinger

Iowa Journal of Communication

Carol Severino's "Personality Types and Classroom Dynamics" provides a model capable of introducing into the classroom questions which are central to the concerns of developmental learning theorists. Following the work of Jerome Bruner and others, many instructors interested in developmental learning consider it essential to invite students to reflect upon how their individual ways of seeing and being in the world either enhance or interfere with their problem-solving abilities, and that seems to be a central goal of Severino’s. Whether we ask students to argue for policy change or interpret a literary text, we want them finally to stand back …

Types And Trends: Commentary On Article By Carol Severino, Virginia Darby

Iowa Journal of Communication

Any teacher who has done time in a secondary school can appreciate Ms. Severino's opening comments about classroom chemistry. Having taught high school English, theatre, and speech classes since 1971, I've experienced many of the same frustrations Severino describes in the rhetoric classes on which she focuses. Clearly, her analysis and experimentation with those student groups is right in line with current educational trends which call for major rethinking and restructuring of traditional classroom practices. As teachers looking towards the 21st Century, we must be willing to make a fundamental shift in our accepted perception of education as a mass …

Staffing Strategies For Global Corporations, Danica Novotny Jan 1992

Staffing Strategies For Global Corporations, Danica Novotny

The new buzzword in business is globalization. The world is becoming more interdependent as countries join together for economic purposes and reduce their trade barriers. The European Economic Community is probably the best example of this growing trend. Such changes not only affect corporate giants, but small local businesses as well. Eighty percent of all businesses in the United States now face international competition, according to Robert Frederick, chairperson of the National Foreign Trade Council (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 1991, p. 72).

Aids In The Workplace, Trent Booher

Draftings In

Imagine you are plant manager at a meat packing plant. You have recently implemented policies regarding workers who have contracted the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Proud of this accomplishment, you decide to share your program with the media so that others might look on it as a model of prudent yet humane response to the effects of this tragic disease. Product sales decline. Accompanying this decline come hundreds of letters from customers expressing their concern about your AIDS policies. They are afraid that an infected employee would spread the virus if he or she sneezed, bled, or perspired on meat …

Calvinism And The Rise Of Capitalism In Scotland, Karen Brown Jan 1992

Calvinism And The Rise Of Capitalism In Scotland, Karen Brown

Draftings In

The period of European history encompassing the sixteenth, seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, which includes the Reformation and the Enlightenment, marked the end of the medieval period in Europe and signaled the emergence of the "modern" Europe of today. Scotland embraced the new ideas of the era around the mid-sixteenth century, shortly after the Reformation in England. Several reasons have been cited as to the cause of Scotland's "rebirth," including the political and economic climate of the country. Toward the end of the period, the Treaty of Union of 1707 brought Scotland under English rule and provided stability in the …

Building Supportive Communities For Youth: Local Approaches To Enhancing Positive Youth Development (Paper In Progress), Elaine Johnson, Geeta Tate

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

The African proverb, "it takes a village to raise a child,'' is succinctly accurate. Youth development is the result of the opportunities, experiences, and instruction offered to youth in various settings. Rising concern about both the risks young people are exposed to and the preparatory experiences they are denied has generated an awareness that positive youth development is an incredibly complex process. This complexity and the difficulty faced by families and young people trying to piece together needed supports and opportunities suggest that they should not be expected to do it on their own.

But while the need for concerted …

The School Counselor's Role In Working With Elementary Students Diagnosed With Cancer, Sherrie J. Zeutenhorst Jan 1992

The School Counselor's Role In Working With Elementary Students Diagnosed With Cancer, Sherrie J. Zeutenhorst

Graduate Research Papers

The annual incidence of pediatric cancers in the United States is approximately 12 per 100,000 children and six to seven thousand cases are diagnosed each year. Cancer accounts for the greatest number of disease-related deaths in children under 16 years of age, exceeded only by accidents. Fifty to sixty percent of cancer patients achieve a 5-year disease-free survival and possible cure (Ross, 1984; Perry & Flanagan, 1986; Spinetta & Deasy-Spinetta, 1981).

A Rationale For Enhancing The Role Of The Non-School Voluntary Sector In Youth Development (Paper In Progress), Karen Pittman, Marlene Wright, Geeta Tate

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

Growing awareness of the seriousness of youth problems in this country (e.g., substance abuse, delinquency, early pregnancy, early school leaving) and of the magnitude of these problems compared to those experienced by youth in other countries has led policymakers, practitioners, and the general public to agree with the above statement. We, as a society, are not offering something to our young people that we should be. The questions that need to be answered are obvious: What are we doing wrong? How did it happen? How do we change the situation? In the spirit of this concern, we explore in this …

Strategies For Strengthening Institutional Mission, Irene Chalmers-Neubauer Jan 1992

Strategies For Strengthening Institutional Mission, Irene Chalmers-Neubauer

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

To achieve Postulate One, the central administration of an institution must first establish a communication infrastructure which promotes a continuous free flow of information from the president's office to the faculty and the student body and from the faculty and the student body to the president's office. Second, a statement of beliefs, also known as a mission statement or philosophy, must be identified. Only then can the faculty set up long- and short-term goals. Third, an established procedure for encouraging dialogue between all participants must be established, perhaps in the form of monthly meetings and working subcommittees. These three points …

Die Verbindung (The Connection), Orin Nearhoof Jan 1992

Die Verbindung (The Connection), Orin Nearhoof

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

John Goodlad (1990) posits three bold Postulates (One, Two and Three) as the basis for his reform treatise in teacher education. The basic focus of this paper is Postulate One, as it sets the stage and the background for the development and implementation of Postulates Two and Three. Implementation of these corollary Postulates would elevate teacher education to parity with other campus programs and would serve as a basis for rewards for faculty geared to the nature of the field. It would also establish for teacher education the autonomous organizational identity, budget and decision-making authority similar to that enjoyed by …

Vision, Reality And Challenge: Thoughts On The Reform Of Teacher Education, Thomas J. Budink Jan 1992

Vision, Reality And Challenge: Thoughts On The Reform Of Teacher Education, Thomas J. Budink

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

We are in a five-year window of time, when the majority of teachers and teacher educators will be retiring. One projection suggests that by the fall of 1993 an additional 1.65 million public and private elementary and secondary teachers will be needed as teachers leave the profession or retire. That's more than two-thirds of the 2.4 million teachers in classrooms today. Other projections predict a 50% turnover. Therefore, a window of opportunity exists during this five-year period to significantly improve teacher education, thus affecting the staff member who will shape future generations of students (Haseutab & Wilson, 1990).

Literacy And Critical Thinking Skills Of Beginning Teachers: Preparation Program Responsibilities, Roger P. Johnson Jan 1992

Literacy And Critical Thinking Skills Of Beginning Teachers: Preparation Program Responsibilities, Roger P. Johnson

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

There can be little argument that we wish to have teachers in our schools who are literate, who are proficient in reading and communications skills, who can think insightfully and present and defend their points of view persuasively. Potentially divisive issues inherent in Postulate Seven relate more to its form than to its substance. Specifically, we must deal with acceptable definitions of the literacy and critical thinking skills of an educated person, the potentially hidden problems of discrimination and prejudice and the role of professional education programs in enforcing such skill guidelines.

Program Procedures And Methodology, Larry Streyffeler Jan 1992

Program Procedures And Methodology, Larry Streyffeler

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Teacher education programs need significant modification. We are preparing teachers who are cognitively able to work in the classroom but who fall short when confronted with the affective demands of many of today's students. The new teachers I know have increasing difficulties building and nurturing the teacher/student bond, the cement in the foundation of the teaching and learning process. My conclusions are not drawn from a research model, rather, solely on my observations and non-empirical conclusions.

Programming The Education Of Educators, Sidney Barrick Jan 1992

Programming The Education Of Educators, Sidney Barrick

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Many professions stipulate stiff entrance requirements and limit the number of students who can be enrolled per year. It would appear that most colleges and universities have an open enrollment policy toward education majors. Are there stipulations on classroom availabilities, faculty-student ratio, grade point average or whether each candidate is suited mentally and/or physically to become a teacher? The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education Standards has had little effect on improving the quality of teacher preparation programs. In place of the present mass of standards, four standards were proposed. These alternative standards focus on adequate financial support, selective …

The Common Denominators Of World Class Schools, Roger Ohde Jan 1992

The Common Denominators Of World Class Schools, Roger Ohde

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

National attention is being focused on education as our nation strives to have what is being termed "world class schools." All facets of our educational process will be subjected to examination as we strive to elevate our level of achievement. One small but vital link in the process involves the preparation of our nation's teachers.

Change in American society has been dramatic and will continue at an even faster pace in the decades ahead. Changes, however, have not occurred as dramatically in the process and preparation of our nation's future teachers. As we begin the process of certification through the …

Implications Of Goodlad's "Good Stewardship" For Field-Based Teacher Education, Michael Vavrus Jan 1992

Implications Of Goodlad's "Good Stewardship" For Field-Based Teacher Education, Michael Vavrus

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

In Teachers for Our Nation's Schools John Goodlad (1990) calls for programs which develop within education students a profound democratic consciousness for assisting them to understand the inevitable tensions between unquestioned routines, research and theory-supported practices. Furthermore, such approaches are to take place in "exemplary schools," followed with assistance to recent graduates for "easing the critical early years of transition into teaching" (pp. 61-62).

Imbedded throughout Goodlad's Postulates* is the notion that teacher education students must internalize the "good stewardship" dimension of teaching (p. 51). One key aspect of this stewardship, which is intended to empower teachers to renew schools, …

The Relationship Between Teacher Education Reform And State, Raymond F. Gaul Jan 1992

The Relationship Between Teacher Education Reform And State, Raymond F. Gaul

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

As an educator, one cannot disagree with Goodlad's Postulates as presented. The state relationship and teacher education reform issue is not new. Educational research, reports, articles and experts all support Goodlad's Postulate Eighteen that states "Programs for the education of educators, in order to be vital and renewing, must be free from curricular specifications by licensing agencies and restrained only by enlightened, professionally driven requirements for accreditation" (p. 63). Professional educators also strongly support Postulate Nineteen: "Programs for the education of educators must be protected from the vagaries of supply and demand by state policies that allow neither backdoor 'emergency' …

Focus Area Two: College/University Faculty, Jack Wilkinson, T. Anne Cleary

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The college/university faculty issue group also generated a list of criteria which could be used as a "checklist" for college and university teacher educators. College and university teachers in all facets of a program should:

  1. Exhibit continued interest in professional teacher preparation. 2. Exhibit a sound, contemporary understanding of the content and pedagogical body of knowledge in their field. 3. Exhibit a wide variety of strategies, concepts and skills which enable them to teach students with a broad range of differences in background, experience and cognition. 4. Exhibit the ability to link field research to classroom practices. 5. Exhibit the …

Executive Summary, Dave Else Jan 1992

Executive Summary, Dave Else

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

A growing number of voices now call for reform of K-12 schools, and the call is becoming louder each day, month and year that we ponder the question "how do we proceed?" Not surprisingly, a majority of the voices making the call and offering direction are outside of education. Perhaps that is to be expected because, as Joel Barker notes in the Power of Vision, new paradigms do not typically come from within but rather from areas external to the field being changed. Or maybe those voices from afar are a result of "prestige deprivation" that has clung to educators …
