History Of Prairie Chickens In Iowa, M. E. Stempel, Sam Rodgers Jr. Jan 1961

History Of Prairie Chickens In Iowa, M. E. Stempel, Sam Rodgers Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The peak period for prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus) in Iowa was about 1880 when 69% of the state was in farms. They were found in prairie areas throughout the state. Hunters found this grouse ideal game and bags of 25 to 50 per day were easily taken. Market hunters frequently killed 200 or more per day. Farmers trapped and shot the birds to sell or to eat. As long as marginal prairie areas were only lightly disturbed by agriculture, the prairie chickens held on, but when intensive farming began, the birds nested in hayfields or in over-grazed pastures where …

Electron And Light Microscope Studies Of Endamoeba Terrapinae, Marilyn Driml Jan 1961

Electron And Light Microscope Studies Of Endamoeba Terrapinae, Marilyn Driml

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was restricted to the trophozoite stage of Endamoeba terrapinae. The most striking feature found was lack of cellular components such as are found in Amoeba proteus and the giant amoeba. No structures resembling mitochondria, Golgi bodies, or fat globules were observed. The only defined structures with the exception of the nucleus were vesicles containing bacteria and electron-dense granules. These cytoplasmic components stained lightly with hematoxylin.

Electron Microscope Observations Of Intracellular Responses To Immobilization Antibody In Tetrahymena Pyriformis, Robert E. Henshaw Jan 1961

Electron Microscope Observations Of Intracellular Responses To Immobilization Antibody In Tetrahymena Pyriformis, Robert E. Henshaw

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Through the coupling of high resolution electron microscopy with the sensitive and flexible techniques of agar diffusion it is possible to study in great detail the nature, site, and degree of intracellular damage caused by exposure to antibody. Tetrahymena is well suited for this type of study since pure cultures are readily grown axenically in the laboratory. Control cells exposed to saline solutions, neutral serum, or heterologous antiserum showed few differences from normal cells. In cells treated with homologous antibody a greatly increased number of cavities appear in the cytoplasm along Pitelka's primary meridian. It is suggested that these cavities …

The Principal’S Role In The Library Services In Iowa High Schools With Enrollments Of 200 To 300 Students, Arthur E. Borwick Jan 1961

The Principal’S Role In The Library Services In Iowa High Schools With Enrollments Of 200 To 300 Students, Arthur E. Borwick

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

For many years colleges and universities have provided reasonably adequate instruction tor school administrators in moat of the areas of their professional education. Required courses in administration, curriculum, and supervision of the secondary school give attention to nearly all phases of the school program. However, it is questionable whether some phases of secondary education have been properly covered, and one of these is the library. Since all areas of responsibility are of concern to school administrators, it is fundamental that the role of the school library be adequately understood and supported by administrators if the library is to make its …

A Source Of Bacterial Blight Resistance For Soybeans, J. M. Dunleavy, C. R. Weber, D. W. Chamberlain Jan 1960

A Source Of Bacterial Blight Resistance For Soybeans, J. M. Dunleavy, C. R. Weber, D. W. Chamberlain

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Incidence of bacterial blight of soybeans was observed from 1953 to 1959. During this period the disease was observed in 25 to 72 percent of the fields examined. A search was made for an improved source of blight resistance. A soybean introduction, P.I. 68708 was resistant to blight under natural conditions and when inoculated. It was also resistant to brown spot but was susceptible to race 8 of Peronospora manshurica as well as to Phytophthora rot. Yield, date of maturity, seed size, seed quality, and lodging resistance of the introduction were comparable to the same characters of the variety Blackhawk.

A Hypothesis To Account For Unusual Leaf Variation In Viola Pedata L., Norman H. Russell, William R. Bowen Jan 1960

A Hypothesis To Account For Unusual Leaf Variation In Viola Pedata L., Norman H. Russell, William R. Bowen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Viola pedata L., the birdfoot violet, occasionally displays unusual variation in leaf shape in the southeastern United States. No satisfactory explanation for this has yet been provided. Analyses of variation in a colony with normal leaf shapes, one with the unusual leaf variants, and a neighboring population of Viola primulifolia L. subsp. villosa (Eaton) Russell leads to the hypothesis that the leaf variation is due to hybridization and subsequent introgression between V. pedata and V. primulifolia subsp. villosa.

Scattering Of Electromagnetic Waves In The Troposphere And The Use Of This Technique For Communications, Irvin H. Gerks Jan 1960

Scattering Of Electromagnetic Waves In The Troposphere And The Use Of This Technique For Communications, Irvin H. Gerks

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This article is an introduction to the subject of tropospheric scatter propagation for the non-specialist. It opens with a review of various modes of propagation which may exist in a non-turbulent atmosphere, such as diffraction and ionospheric reflection. The scattering of energy in a turbulent medium is then examined, and statistical methods are introduced to describe the resultant field. Special characteristics of the signal are discussed, such as variation with distance, climatic effects, frequency dependence, fading, bandwidth, and noise level. The paper concludes with a description of methods and equipment employed in the design of a communication system operating over …

Characteristics Of The Floyd And Some Related Soils In Floyd And Bremer Counties, Iowa, J. A. Phillips, F. F. Riecken Jan 1960

Characteristics Of The Floyd And Some Related Soils In Floyd And Bremer Counties, Iowa, J. A. Phillips, F. F. Riecken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study deals with imperfectly and poorly drained soils generally considered to have developed under prairie from a parent material consisting of a sandy-silt mantle overlying Iowan glacial loam till. Three Floyd profiles, two profiles of the proposed Tripoli series (Floyd, poorly drained variant), and one Clyde profile were studied in the field and in the laboratory. Results indicate that the Tripoli soils should be separated from the Floyd and mapped as a separate series. The present concepts of the Floyd series as a minimal Brunizem and the Tripoli as a minimal Wiesenboden are substantiated by field studies and laboratory …

The Status And Needs Of Guidance Programs In Iowa High Schools, Clarence Stanley Carney Jan 1960

The Status And Needs Of Guidance Programs In Iowa High Schools, Clarence Stanley Carney

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The goal of education today is to provide an opportunity for each student to develop to the optimum. The task or guidance programs and their personnel is to facilitate this development and the accompanying adjustments of the students to their ever-changing needs and environment. Since this emphasis on the position of guidance in the schools is bec0ming more important each successive year, this has been an opportune time to investigate and evaluate progress in guidance programs on a state-wide basis. This study attempted to investigate guidance programs as they existed during the 1959-60 school year in Iowa high schools as …

Some Notes On The Occurrence Of A Coal Seam In The Cedar Valley Formation Of Johnson County, Iowa, Verne E. Dow

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Samples of carbonaceous material from several exposures of the Cedar Valley formation have been studied in order to establish a basis for calling the material a coal. Examination has shown that the material is a "cannel'' coal, and it is believed to be one of the earliest known coals in North America.

A Program Of Curriculum Development For The Secondary Schools Of Thailand, Chuang Bejrananda Jan 1960

A Program Of Curriculum Development For The Secondary Schools Of Thailand, Chuang Bejrananda

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Prior to about 1870, Thailand had no formal school system. Education in general was undertaken as a family task. However, as society became more complex, special institutions were developed to promote desired educational activities. Such developments have been gradual, and in large measure in reference to national interests.

A Study To Determine The Feasibility Of Using A Time-Penalty Scoring Procedure For Shorthand Dictation And Transcription Tests, M. Elaine Blumhagen Jan 1960

A Study To Determine The Feasibility Of Using A Time-Penalty Scoring Procedure For Shorthand Dictation And Transcription Tests, M. Elaine Blumhagen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The ultimate goal of any shorthand course is to have the students produce mailable copy from their shorthand notes at reasonable rates of speed. This fact has been recognized by leading authorities in the field of-shorthand and transcription. With acceptance of this goal as the objective of shorthand and transcription teaching, some valid means of measuring student progress toward that goal is essential.

A Study Of The Influence Of The Wettin Family On European Diplomacy From 1878 To 1914, Loren Nelson Horton Jan 1960

A Study Of The Influence Of The Wettin Family On European Diplomacy From 1878 To 1914, Loren Nelson Horton

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The causes of World War I have been written about so repeatedly that there would seem to be no facet left unexplored. A closer examination of this period of history will reveal that most of the writing is the product of nationalistic writers seeking to lay the war guilt at the door of their neighbor, or seeking to prove the innocenc of their own governments and countries. Leaders of the period have written voluminous memoirs carefully explaining their own purity of motive and action, and at the same time exposing their rivals as warmongers and deliberate war-makers., despite valiant efforts …

Stabilization Of A Calcareous Loess With Calcium Lignosulfonate And Aluminum Sulfate, T. Demirel, Donald T. Davidson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper describes a promising method of stabilizing calcareous Wisconsin-age loess with a combination treatment of spent sulfite liquor and aluminum sulfate. The stabilization is thought to be due to formation of water-insoluble basic aluminum lignosulfonate in the compacted soil.

An Ecological Reconnaissance Of The Bottom Fauna, Millers Bay, Lake Okoboji, Philip T. Clampitt, Elizabeth L. Waffle, Richard V. Bovbjerg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The bottom fauna and related ecological factors were investigated in a bay of Lake West Okoboji, Iowa, during the summer of 1959. Two contiguous areas were compared: (1) a relatively small, shallow bay largely enclosed by land and partially separated by a narrow sand spit from (2) a larger, deeper bay opening into the major lake basin. Data include particle size analysis and organic content of substratum, and qualitative and quantitative distribution of more than 50 species of macroscopic bottom animals. Density and bio-mass of animals were calculated at 14 stations. Chironomids (Diptera) were the dominant group in the study …

An Ecological Catalog Of The Lake Okoboji Gastropods, Richard V. Bovbjerg, Martin J. Ulmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A five year survey was made of the gastropods of Lake West Okoboji, Iowa. Only 11 species comprise the present fauna, a remnant of what was earlier in this century several times larger. These species are: Amnicola limosa (Say), Amnicola lustrica Pilsbry, Ferrissia rivularis (Say), Gyraulus parvus (Say), Helisoma trivolvis (Say), Lymnaea reftexa Say, Lymnaea obrussa Say, Menetus exacuous (Say), Physa gyrina Say, Physa sayii Tappan, and Valvata tricarinata (Say). These are now confined to areas less than 10 meters in depth with numbers of species and densities much greater in the bays than in the main body of the …
