Resolving Discrepancies Between Surface And Subsurface Studies Of The Maquoketa Formation Of Northeast Iowa, Mary C. Parker, Fred H. Dorheim, Russell B. Campbell Jan 1959

Resolving Discrepancies Between Surface And Subsurface Studies Of The Maquoketa Formation Of Northeast Iowa, Mary C. Parker, Fred H. Dorheim, Russell B. Campbell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Maquoketa formation in the outcrop area has been assigned a maximum thickness of 257 feet by earlier surface workers. Recent subsurface study in the same area reveals a thickness of 300-320 feet of Maquoketa sediments. Until now the correlation of subsurface units to recognized surface members has been hampered by this discrepancy. The recognition and identification of a new unit in the Elgin member of the Maquoketa formation, and a greater measured thickness of the Isotelus zone has resolved this difference.

Late Pleistocene And Recent Missouri River Terraces In The Big Bend Reservoir, South Dakota, Alan H. Coogan, William N. Irving Jan 1959

Late Pleistocene And Recent Missouri River Terraces In The Big Bend Reservoir, South Dakota, Alan H. Coogan, William N. Irving

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Three cut-and-fill terraces of the Missouri River are present in the Big Bend Reservoir. The upper terrace (Mt-2), tentatively correlated with the Cary moraine, consists of outwash sands and gravels. It stands at heights of 80-100 feet above the river. Its surface is capped by a deposit of as much as 30 feet of aeolian sand and silt. The intermediate terrace (Mt-1) consists of gravel, sand, and silt, and stands at heights of 35-45 feet above the river. It, too, is capped with aeolian sand and silt. This terrace is tentatively dated as Mankato, but may be younger. The lower …

Microorganisms Found In Field Specimens Of Diseased Corn Borer Larvae, Earle S. Raun, William R. Lockhart, Russell J. Beers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two hundred and eighty-six abnormal, field collected larvae of the European corn borer were examined for the presence of microorganisms which could have caused the abnormality or death. The most common microorganism found was a microsporidian, Perezia pyraustae Paillot. Next most numerous was a group of enterobacteria. Spore forming rods apparently of the genus Bacillus, and fungi belonging to the genera Beauvaria and Metarrhizium were also isolated. An examination of 100 apparently normal pupae revealed that 82 were hosts to Perezia pyraustae and two contained bacteria.

Empathic Ability Compared As To Environmental Setting And Concept Of Measurement, Alice Jane Anderson Jan 1959

Empathic Ability Compared As To Environmental Setting And Concept Of Measurement, Alice Jane Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since the turn of the century there has been a growing controversy as to the definition and significance of the term "empathy" in the separate fields of esthetics and psychology. People concerned with both areas use a similar basic definition - the ability to "feel into" an object or another person. It is in the attainment of this ability and the ways in which we can use it that the definitions vary. In the esthetic sense, empathy is thought of as a process of identification and projection. A person watching a play, for instance, projects himself into the actions and …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Selected Historical Fiction For Use In High School World History, Franklin D. Carlson Jan 1959

An Annotated Bibliography Of Selected Historical Fiction For Use In High School World History, Franklin D. Carlson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

High school teachers of World History have an opportunity to enrich their students' learning by suggesting or requiring the reading of historical fiction appropriate to their courses. Much of the world's literature may be classified as historical fiction, having value for the student of history as well as for the student of literature. Historical fiction may be used as an extension of the regular textbook, to enlarge the individual student's understandings of historical characters, events, and time periods which may receive scant treatment in the regular textbook. For many students, a fictional account of the past may be more palatable, …

A Study Of Emotion In Selected Plays Of George Bernard Shaw, Winifred Hager Holkeboer Jan 1959

A Study Of Emotion In Selected Plays Of George Bernard Shaw, Winifred Hager Holkeboer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of an infinite number of descriptions of George Bernard Shaw portrays him as a young Irishman who descended upon England with broom in hand, and, finding it full of philistine abominations, proceeded to make things lively for his self-satisfied host by sweeping the stables clean. Any sensible estimate of this remarkable man must at least admit to his having left England a different place than it· was when he found it. Indeed, his influence has extended beyond the bounds of his time and place; he stood like· a great cosmic giant astride the span of a near-century-one foot planted …

Effects Of Dietary Free C18 Saturated And Unsaturated Fatty Acids And Dl-Methionine Choline Chloride Mixture On Plasma Cholesterol Of The Male Albino Rat, Erwin T. Janssen Jan 1958

Effects Of Dietary Free C18 Saturated And Unsaturated Fatty Acids And Dl-Methionine Choline Chloride Mixture On Plasma Cholesterol Of The Male Albino Rat, Erwin T. Janssen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The relationship of dietary fatty acids and the cholesterol levels found in serum and liver is, and has been, under study by many investigators. The relationships involved are undoubtedly intricate and more complex than most investigators seem to imply. Although Jones et al. imply a close relationship between rats and man in dietary requirements and habits, it is good to keep in mind differences that are intrinsic to both man and experimental animals. Effects produced on experimental animals and those produced upon man in dietary studies in some cases may be vastly different. With this in mind, an attempt will …

Textural Variations In Some Iowa Limestones, Donald L. Biggs Jan 1958

Textural Variations In Some Iowa Limestones, Donald L. Biggs

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Textural properties of limestones assume a large importance in determining the origin of the rocks. Limestones are usually called detrital rocks if they possess oolitic, pelleted or coquoinoid texture (Pettijohn, 1957, p. 401). This criterion as to whether the rock was formed by current-sorted detritus or direct chemical precipitation is valid if, and only if, the rock texture has remained essentially unchanged during diagenesis. Because many of the Mississippi limestones of Iowa display pellet textures, it is desirable to determine, if possible, the true nature of this texture, and its mode of origin, and whether it reflects a depositional or …

Procedures For Laboratory Studies On Wood Decay Resistance, Harold S. Mcnabb Jr. Jan 1958

Procedures For Laboratory Studies On Wood Decay Resistance, Harold S. Mcnabb Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Laboratory studies on wood decay resistance are useful in both research and teaching. These studies have been used extensively to determine decay resistance of tropical woods to wood rot fungi found in the temperate regions of North America (9, 16, 20, 25, 26, 27). The methods have been used or suggested as tools in basic research on fungal ecology (4, 13, 14, 17), abnormal wood (5, 6, 12, 24) and wood variability (8, 21, 22, 28). The techniques also are adapted for use as laboratory exercises in a Plant Pathology course, especially if conducted in conjunction with other laboratory deterioration …

Eflect Of Lodging On Yield And Test Weight Of Oats And Establishment Of Alfalfa Seedlings, A. J. Norden, K. J. Frey Jan 1958

Eflect Of Lodging On Yield And Test Weight Of Oats And Establishment Of Alfalfa Seedlings, A. J. Norden, K. J. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lodging in small grains has been shown to reduce yield and quality of the grain in addition to the harvesting difficulties incurred. Eldredge obtained a yield reduction of 47 percent by bending over oat straws as the heads were emerging from the boot. The yield decreased with injury at succeeding weekly intervals until just before ripening when the loss was 12 percent. Pendleton found that Clinton oat yields were reduced 37 and 17 percent by complete lodging four and 20 days after heading respectively. The plots lodged at 45 degrees on the same two dates yielded 14 and three percent …

Chemical Determination Of Isoftavones, Edmund Cheng, Lester Yoder Jan 1958

Chemical Determination Of Isoftavones, Edmund Cheng, Lester Yoder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent developments in ruminant nutrition by using estrogenic additives to stimulate the rate of gain and feed efficiency of beef cattle (Burroughs et al. 1954) indicated the important role of feeds and forages containing estrogenic substances. Forages such as clover and alfalfa have been shown to contain small amounts of estrogenic substances (Cheng et al. 1953a). An isoflavone derivative, genistein, isolated from soybean oil meal was found to be estrogenic by the mouse uterine weight assay (Cheng et al. 1953b). Several isoflavone compounds have been synthesized chemically (Yoder et al. 1954) and they have been shown to be estrogenic also …

A Sub-Surface Stratigraphic Marker In The Devonian Cedar Valley Formation, Mary C. Parker Jan 1958

A Sub-Surface Stratigraphic Marker In The Devonian Cedar Valley Formation, Mary C. Parker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Numerous spore-like bodies have been observed in the Cedar Valley formation of Late Devonian age during routine microscopic studies of cuttings from wells in East Central Iowa. The distribution of wells in which these individuals have been observed is shown on Plate 1. They occur above the basal sandy limestones of the Solon member in a zone approximately ten feet in thickness. Recently these spore-like bodies have been studied and the zone of occurrence correlated in an attempt to determine their value as a stratigraphic marker in sub-surface correlations. This paper should be regarded as an introduction to further study.

Mr. Pat Short will extend his 1957 report on "Fuels for Aircraft Propulsion Systems".

A Preliminary Study On Foreign Personnel Selection, Herbert Paul Froehlich Jan 1958

A Preliminary Study On Foreign Personnel Selection, Herbert Paul Froehlich

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem is not the usual one of trying to predict behavior relevant to an individual's daily activities, but that of predicting how an individual will behave in and adapt to an environment in which he has never found himself, or ever thought he would find himself. Involved in such prediction is the question of whether the individual will behave as predicted once he comes in contact with the new environment. This may be the situation facing a company wanting to locate abroad, hiring native employees together with some Americans. The expense of training, ill-will, loss of production, etc., created …

Helminths Of Fishes From Trumbull Lake, Clay County, Iowa, Fred Paul Meyer Jan 1958

Helminths Of Fishes From Trumbull Lake, Clay County, Iowa, Fred Paul Meyer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1953 it was observed that the fishes taken by anglers in Trumbull Lake, Clay County, Iowa, were "grubby" or wormy" and hence considered unfit for human consumption. This study was undertaken to ascertain in greater detail the parasite fauna of that area. Work was begun in the summer of 1954 and collections were made intermittently through the summers of 1954 and 1955. All fish were examined at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Lake Okoboji, Iowa. Final identifications of the parasites were completed at Iowa State College during 1956 and 1957.
