Mechanical Lettering Devices For Drafting, Wilson G. Forbes Aug 1971

Mechanical Lettering Devices For Drafting, Wilson G. Forbes

Graduate Research Papers

Having taught mechanical drawing in high school, grades nine through twelve for nearly six years this writer has stressed the importance of lettering to students many times. However, freehand lettering is a very short unit, with limited experience using a Leroy Lettering Guide. The desire to discover other means of lettering drawings prompted the selection of this topic.

A Study Of Dr. Donald Maley's Theory -- "Research And Experimentation In Industrial Arts", John Edward Ferree Jul 1971

A Study Of Dr. Donald Maley's Theory -- "Research And Experimentation In Industrial Arts", John Edward Ferree

Graduate Research Papers

The problem of this study is to make a thorough examination of Dr. Donald Maley's theory -- "Research and Experimentation in Industrial Arts in the Junior or Senior High School."

Perhaps now in 1968, more than ever, concern for what is in store for industrial arts is, or should be, considered more "grave" than expressed in the above quote of Dr. Maley in 1959. Certainly now it could generally be agreed that all theories concerning the future path of industrial arts, of which Dr. Maley's Research and Experimentation theory is one, deserve a full measure of study and evaluation by …

The Library And Educational Innovations, Marlene Muller Prigge Jan 1971

The Library And Educational Innovations, Marlene Muller Prigge

Graduate Research Papers

The past decade has seen the school library transformed from a center of print materials to a center for instructional materials of all types and varieties. The service offered by the library has undergone a concomitant change. However, one can still not describe a library or instructional materials center with any certainty that the description will be the same tomorrow. For as with education today--the only lasting characteristic seems to be change.

Action Education: An Educator's Response To A Community's Drug Problem, Gene Balk

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In the spring of 1969, the Mason City area was brought face to face with an ever-increasing problem in our society-drugs and narcotics. The community and surrounding area were deeply concerned. How had it happened? When did it start? How many were involved? What age levels were affected? What can we do?

The Objectives Of The Earth Science Curriculum Project: An Evaluation Of Their Achievement, Musa Y. Qutub, Keith M. Hussey Jan 1971

The Objectives Of The Earth Science Curriculum Project: An Evaluation Of Their Achievement, Musa Y. Qutub, Keith M. Hussey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The textbook Investigating the Earth and its companion two-volume Teacher's Guide were conceived, written, and tested by a group of scientists and educators brought together for that specific purpose. A primary objective was to produce an earth science course that could replace the increasingly unsatisfactory and outdated general science program. The three main themes outlined for the program were behavioral, conceptual, and historical. Its major objective was to offer the ninth-grade students an interdisciplinary earth science course that would provide a view of our dynamic planet through the use of scientific concepts, such as space, time, energy, motion, and matter, …

Effectiveness Of Library Learning Centers At The Elementary School Level, Jane W. Baker Jan 1971

Effectiveness Of Library Learning Centers At The Elementary School Level, Jane W. Baker

Graduate Research Papers

The problem to be studied focuses on the need for media centers and media programs in the elementary schools. The Standards for School Media Programs published jointly by the Department of Audio-Visual Instruction of NEA and the American Association of School Librarians in June 1969 defines the media center as "a learning center in the school where a full range of print and audiovisual media, necessary equipment, and services from media specialists are accessible to students and teachers." The focus of the media program is on facilitating and improving the learning process in its new direction--with emphasis on the learner, …

The Computer And Automation In The Library, Sally Jean Kremer Jan 1971

The Computer And Automation In The Library, Sally Jean Kremer

Graduate Research Papers

The concept of the computer has had a great impact upon society and individuals. An ever increasing number of uses has been found for the computer. One of the possible uses ls particularly noteable--its use as an aid to teaching. The computer is a tool which can be used to enhance the educational system. The nature of the computer can be summed up in only a few words: "It does so well the work it is asked to do, because it is told how to do that work by means of a 'stored program' of instructions." The great benefit of …

White Teachers And Black Students: A Problem For The Speech Discipline, Edward L. Mcglone, Loren J. Anderson Jan 1971

White Teachers And Black Students: A Problem For The Speech Discipline, Edward L. Mcglone, Loren J. Anderson

Iowa Journal of Communication

In our highly verbal society, the ability to communicate orally is fundamental to economic, social, and academic achievement. Only recently has American education, aided by government and foundation support, sought to identify and cope with the communication problems of economically disadvantaged black students. The findings of four recent commissions--the Haryou studies in New York, the McCone panel in Los Angeles, the national Coleman commission, and the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders--all have contained the observation that intensive concentration on verbal skills is needed in black urban schools; because as the latter Commission's report put it, the lack of such …

What's Happening To The Elementary School Library?, Joan Henderson Jan 1971

What's Happening To The Elementary School Library?, Joan Henderson

Graduate Research Papers

Far too many adults and children have not had especially pleasant experiences with libraries in the past. The traditional quietness was enough to scare anyone away. Ordinary people didn't exactly feel welcome inside the walls of these "storehouses of wisdom." Today's library has to develop a new image. It must leave the old passive role behind and blossom forth into active participation in the educational process.

The Contributions Of The School Library To The Learning Process, Alice Rose Weber Jan 1971

The Contributions Of The School Library To The Learning Process, Alice Rose Weber

Graduate Research Papers

The goal of education in our democratic society is to educate citizens to function in such a. society; the goal of the school library service is to facilitate the attainment of that goal. The library program must enrich, support, vitalize and implement the educational program, and encourage each student to reach his potential as a human, a learner and a citizen of both today and tomorrow.

A Library Course Of Study - Investigation Outline, Mary Hantelman Jan 1971

A Library Course Of Study - Investigation Outline, Mary Hantelman

Graduate Research Papers

I examined several course of study guides, textbooks, periodicals, and books on library curriculum as part of an investigation to determine what library skills were taught at each level. For each area I included the type or information found and then added my own conclusions for that section.

Following this, in outline form, is the library instructional program, 1 - 9, for the Oelwein Community Schools. The high school program is given in greater detail because I felt the outline form would not explain to the reader the rationale behind it. A.s a part. of the library program on the …

Environmental Education In The Environment, Michael J. Naylon Jan 1971

Environmental Education In The Environment, Michael J. Naylon

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Man, the thinking animal, is an observer of events in the universe. He has conceded the obvious truth of his uniqueness on this planet and his religions charge him with its stewardship. However, the very quality which distinguishes him from other life forms has also proven to be his greatest weakness. Perception is a personal experience; its very nature mandates that it be point-centered in the universe. That point is the individual. Collective man is guilty of assuming that the universe "happens" around him. He has not effectively perceived that he is a happening in the universe. He has compounded …

Iowa Upstep: A New Program In Science Education, Louis Gatta

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

At a time when knowledge is exponentially increasing and advances in pure science are being incorporated into an ever accelerating technological society, there exists a trend toward fewer and fewer adequately prepared science teachers. At a time when total enrollment in junior and senior high schools is reaching record breaking numbers, the enrollment in elective science courses is on the decline.

Teaching Teaching, D. J. Moffatt, A. W. Jacobs, W. K. Metcalf Jan 1971

Teaching Teaching, D. J. Moffatt, A. W. Jacobs, W. K. Metcalf

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The role of a modern Anatomy department is threefold (Metcalf, 1970): 1. To teach anatomy and its sub-disciplines, gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, microscopic anatomy and embryology, to people who wish to learn it. 2. To advance the science of anatomy-the structural basis of function. 3. To train graduate students for a future role as anatomy faculty.

An Investigation Of The Life And Times Of John Locke Reflected In Selected Writings And Writers Of Three Centuries, Ethel Doescher Zwanziger Jan 1971

An Investigation Of The Life And Times Of John Locke Reflected In Selected Writings And Writers Of Three Centuries, Ethel Doescher Zwanziger

Graduate Research Papers

One of the paradoxes of history is that the people of the past speak more clearly to us today if we understand the time in which they lived.1 Inasmuch as Locke lived in a very tempestuous era, was an unusually active participant in the politics of his country, was no academic recluse, and was a thinker who reflected the mind of his time, it is particularly obligatory to know the historical context in which he belonged if we are to appraise his influence with some degree of accuracy.2 The purpose of this paper, then, is to study the life of …
