An experimental group and a control group will be pretested, instructed, and post-tested to compare the effectiveness of the methods.

Three Illustrators: William Blake, George Cruikshank And Maurice Sendak, Patricia Twait Jan 1971

Three Illustrators: William Blake, George Cruikshank And Maurice Sendak, Patricia Twait

Graduate Research Papers

Children's books have been a source of delight to them; they have evoked both tears and laughter from young audiences. The illustrator has come to be a partner in the creation of hooks for children. The term children's literature now includes the efforts of both illustrators and authors. It was not always so. For many years children read adult books because there was no such thing as a storybook for children. When they came, the books for children were dull fare. They were moralizing with few, if any, illustrations.

Gradually illustrators began illustrating books specifically for children. The literary content …

Planning, Implementing, And Using A Media Center, Dorathea Tatum Stewart Jan 1971

Planning, Implementing, And Using A Media Center, Dorathea Tatum Stewart

Graduate Research Papers

Nearly every teacher in our schools today feels the pressure of too little time and too much to do. Although school administrators cannot provide all the help that is wanted and, perhaps, needed at one time. the teacher can find help from one source in nearly every school-- the library or media center and the specialists in this field.

To understand this help offered by the librarian and audiovisual specialist and the services of the media c:enter, let us first look at the place of the media center in the modern schools and how it has developed.

The Role Of The Science Supervisor As Perceived By Elementary And Secondary Science Teachers, Thomas Graika Jan 1971

The Role Of The Science Supervisor As Perceived By Elementary And Secondary Science Teachers, Thomas Graika

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem that was considered in the study was whether the role of the science supervisor was perceived differently by secondary and elementary teachers of science.

A fifty-four item questionnaire was developed. The items on the questionnaire consisted of statements of tasks which a science supervisor could do, and the teachers were asked to respond on a scale of opinion if they considered this task a role of the science supervisor.

The sample represented five school systems in Iowa which employ a science supervisor. Questionnaires were sent to 156 secondary science teachers and 153 elementary teachers. Ninety-five of all the …

A Study Of Personality Problems And Vocal Nodules In Children, William Lee Glassell Jan 1971

A Study Of Personality Problems And Vocal Nodules In Children, William Lee Glassell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The investigator found several children with vocal nodules in the schools he served. A review of the literature revealed that vocal abuse is the commonly considered etiology of vocal nodules. Vocal abuse did not fit several of the children who tended to be quiet and withdrawn. A further review of the literature was instituted in an attempt to find some feature of commonality between quiet children and noisy children which could explain why quiet children develop vocal nodules. Several authors discussed functional voice disorders as the result of personality problems. Few, however, related their conclusions directly to vocal nodules. The …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Elementary School Methods and Materials is a course which represents a major part of the professional semester and occupies a strategic position in the sequence of the elementary education major at the University of Northern Iowa. Those who plan course content make every effort to coordinate the theoretical aspects of the teaching process with practical classroom application. Though there has been a great deal of freedom for students to choose projects which meet their particular needs, interests, and personalities, it is considered that there exists a common core of knowledges and understandings which contribute background for the teaching task. By …

A Comparative Study Of The Language Of Disadvantaged White Kindergarten Children And Middle-Class White Kindergarten Children, Nadine J. Harman Jan 1971

A Comparative Study Of The Language Of Disadvantaged White Kindergarten Children And Middle-Class White Kindergarten Children, Nadine J. Harman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Much of the research directed towards the study of poverty indicates that low socio-economic or "disadvantaged" children are often found to lack adequate language skills. However. a review of the various studies reveals that many of these investigations have been limited to Negro children and to children living in large cities. There appears to be a lack of information in regard to disadvantaged white children from small towns. In addition, many investigators have failed to consider the role of sex factors in the development of language skills. The purpose of the present study was two-fold (1) to compare the language …

The Philosophy Of Love In Selected Dramas By Paddy Chayefsky, Bettie Lou Hoos Jan 1971

The Philosophy Of Love In Selected Dramas By Paddy Chayefsky, Bettie Lou Hoos

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A study of the dramas developing the theme of love by contemporary dramatist, Paddy Chayefsky, discloses his philosophy of love to be the essence of meaningful life. His nine plays depicting this concept may be divided into three categories according to the type of love they portray: philotheistic, romantic, and conjugal love. The Tenth Man, Gideon, and The Passion of Josef D., representing philotheistic love, reject man's ability to love God. The highest love he ls capable of is that for his fellowman. In his romances, Middle of the Night, Marty, and the secondary plot of Holiday Song, a a …

A Study Of The Effects Of The Concepts “Same” And “Different” Upon The Speech Sound Discrimination Test Performances Of Children Of Various Ages, Barbara Beving Jan 1971

A Study Of The Effects Of The Concepts “Same” And “Different” Upon The Speech Sound Discrimination Test Performances Of Children Of Various Ages, Barbara Beving

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Training in speech sound discrimination may be an important part of some speech therapy and language development programs. In order to determine the nature of the training required, it is necessary to evaluate an individual's ability to discriminate between speech sounds. A variety of tests have been designed for this purpose. A review of the tests indicates that in one type of test the responses are based on the concepts "same" and "different". Recent studies suggest that the ability of an individual to perform at these tests may be affected by the use of the concepts. This study explored the …

Production Attachment For Wood Turning, Julian A. Olson Jun 1970

Production Attachment For Wood Turning, Julian A. Olson

Graduate Research Papers

As an industrial arts instructor for the short period of three years the writer has recognized a definite shortcoming in his instruction of the woodworking lathe. Instruction related to the woodworking lathe by the conventional "hand tool" methods is most important in leading to the students' understanding of basic turning ideas. This instruction, however, falls short of providing an up-to-date picture of the woodworking lathes used by industry.

As a means of overcoming this problem, the writer undertook the study of lathes as a project for the course, "Projects in Industrial Arts". This research provided information necessary in the construction …

Closed-Circuit Television In Industrial Arts, Larry L. Bradshaw Feb 1970

Closed-Circuit Television In Industrial Arts, Larry L. Bradshaw

Graduate Research Papers

The major problem in this study is to find how closed circuit television can be used effectively in Industrial Arts. Several secondary problems are involved with this main problem. The most important of these is teacher presentation. The methodology and mannerisms of a television teacher need to be such that they do not take away from the subject matter to be taught. (Stashoff, 1966, p. 50). The television teacher must be careful to avoid quick distracting movements which would change viewer attention from the learning object to the teacher. This is a special problem because the viewer's attention is confined …

Innovation In Science Education In Australia, Richard P. Tisher Jan 1970

Innovation In Science Education In Australia, Richard P. Tisher

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

There are many similarities in the type of science education provided in Australia and in the United States. Teaching methods, for example, range from the traditional textbook-oriented approach to a laboratory, inquiry-oriented one. Also similar issues related to science education are being debated. Two areas of concern are the preservice education of science teachers and curriculum development. It is in this last mentioned area that the greatest innovation has occurred.

On The Trail Of The Decadent Polyglot, W. F. Hollander Jan 1970

On The Trail Of The Decadent Polyglot, W. F. Hollander

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

At the risk of beating a dead horse to death, I desire to add my lick. Students are not adequately trained to communicate in science, and the objective-type test is not helping. When linguistic fluency is equated with drooling in one's beard, and semantics is some sort of erotic deviation, one must not be surprised to learn that etymology is the study of incests. Most of the kids have become aware that mini means small, and that lunar means moon, and we should be grateful for such small advances, but the slippage in other areas is less cause for a …

Open Letter To Science Teachers: U.S. Army-Iowa Science, Engineering, And Humanities Symposium, Ronald D. Townsend

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

U.S. Army-Iowa Science, Engineering, and Humanities Symposium - In September, 1969, letters announcing this year's symposium and preliminary applications were sent to high school principals in Iowa and western Illinois. This year through the cooperation of the Iowa Academy of Science, initial letters and applications were also sent directly to the science teachers whose names were on the academy's mailing list. Included in the letter was a brief sketch of symposium activities and goals. The science teacher applications included nominations for student research papers and nominations for student symposium participants other than those applying to give papers.

The Distribution Of Climatic Factors In Iowa And Their Influence On Geomorphic Processes, Richard A. Karsten, Sherwood D. Tuttle Jan 1970

The Distribution Of Climatic Factors In Iowa And Their Influence On Geomorphic Processes, Richard A. Karsten, Sherwood D. Tuttle

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper undertakes to evaluate effects of climate upon geormorphic processes in Iowa. Iowa's climate is described as humid continental long summer, with three-fourths of the annual precipitation falling between the end of March and the beginning of October. In almost all climatic factors, the variation trends or changes from the north-northwest toward the south-southeast. Using the two parameters of mean annual temperature and mean annual rainfall for 119 stations in Iowa, a scattergram was constructed. Statistical analyses of the data suggest the presence of three microclimatic zones or regions in Iowa--northern, central, and southern. Comparisons of climatically controlled aspects …

A Longitudinal Study Of The Interests Of Veterinarians, Susan I. Ballou, Jonathan E. Alsip, Thomas E. Hannum Jan 1970

A Longitudinal Study Of The Interests Of Veterinarians, Susan I. Ballou, Jonathan E. Alsip, Thomas E. Hannum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The newly-revised SVIB was restandardized on 362 members of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. Ninety-eight of these veterinarians in this 1966 criterion group were also members of the 1949 criterion groups when the SVIB veterinarian scale was first established. The answer sheets from both the 1949 and the 1966 criterion groups were scored by the newly devised scoring key and a comparison made of score changes over this period. In addition the response-choice frequencies to the items common to both the old and the new SVIB by the longitudinal group were determined and significant shifts were noted and reported in …

Little variation was found between study sites for given sampling times.

Research In Teaching And The Development Of A Theory Of Science Teaching, R. P. Tisher Jan 1970

Research In Teaching And The Development Of A Theory Of Science Teaching, R. P. Tisher

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper outlines some of the significant aspects of research in teaching. Three phases can be distinguished in this research. They are the descriptive, the pragmatic and the eclectic-synthetic ones. The descriptive phase is characterized by the development of classroom observation schedules and the provision of sets of concepts permitting teachers and research workers to communicate about procedures. The categorization of behaviors has resulted in more attention being given to them. Hopefully, the vocabulary and concepts generated in the descriptive phase will not only aid in communicating ideas about teaching but will lead to a greater control over the process.

Echinoderm Zonules In The Devonian Of Iowa, Harrell L. Strimple Jan 1970

Echinoderm Zonules In The Devonian Of Iowa, Harrell L. Strimple

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A tentative framework of ten echinoderm zonules, some of which are not new, is proposed: Nortonechinus owensis Zonule (upper Owen Member, Lime Creek Formation): Dactylocrinus Zonule (upper Cerro Gordo Member), Xenocidaris Zonule (lower Cerro Gordo Member, Lime Creek Formation); Desmidocrinus Zonule, Belanskicrinus Zonule, Agelacrinites Zonule (Mason City Member, Shell Rock Formation); Strobilocystites Zonule, Euryocrinus Zonule (upper Rapid Member), Hexacrinites Zonule (middle Rapid Member), Megistocrinus clarki Zonule (lower Rapid Member, Cedar Valley Formation). Some forms, or assemblages, appear to have decided stratigraphic significance, but more study is needed.
