Observation Of Colonial Peritrichs (Ciliata; Protoza) Of The Okoboji Region, Everett L. Bishop Jr., Theodore L. Jahn Jan 1941

Observation Of Colonial Peritrichs (Ciliata; Protoza) Of The Okoboji Region, Everett L. Bishop Jr., Theodore L. Jahn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The family Epistylidae includes those peritrichous ciliates with non-contractile stalks, either solitary or forming large colonies with dichotomous stalks; the individuals are cylindrical, inverted bell-shape, or ovoid. The organisms are attached to aquatic animals, and occasionally to plants. The most recent and complete key to this family is that of Kahl (1935). The majority of species described in this paper are found attached to the carapace and plastron of Chrysemys marginata bellii (Western Painted Turtle). These species may be found also on the Snapping Turtle, or, rarely, attached to some of the filamentous algae on these animals. Other hosts for …

Carcinogenic Hydrocarbon Effect On Rat Liver In Vitamin A (Abstract), T. U. Marron Jan 1941

Carcinogenic Hydrocarbon Effect On Rat Liver In Vitamin A (Abstract), T. U. Marron

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The depleting effect of methycholanthrene on rat liver vitamin A stores was studied by use of the antimony trichloride method. Phenanthrene injected rats served as controls for the carcinogenic agent. The results were checked on a later series of animals by the use of fluorescent microscopy for the deletion of vitamin A in the tissue.

The Developement Of An Educational Program In Iowa State Parks, I. E. Melhus, J. L. Fults, Elizabeth A. White Jan 1941

The Developement Of An Educational Program In Iowa State Parks, I. E. Melhus, J. L. Fults, Elizabeth A. White

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The first state park was created in 1918; consequently the state park educational program is of recent development. Although the educational program and the development of a park system by the state is relatively new, the idea of state-owned lands for recreational purposes is almost as old as our statehood. T. S. Parvin, registrar of lands back in the fifties, advocated in one of his reports that the state should buy a large tract of land in Des Moines to preserve the statehouse ground, for in time the state would need it for recreational purposes. It is evident now that …

Theoretical Genetics - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, E. W. Timm Jan 1941

Theoretical Genetics - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, E. W. Timm

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The first task of genetics was to determine the laws which govern the transmission of characters from parent to offspring and to locate the material basis for this regular behavior. The task was quickly accomplished so that 20 years ago the gene-chromosome theory of heredity was well established; it has since been the ABC of genetics and provides the framework upon which more recent work rests. The substance of the theory, as you will recall, is that the characters observed in an adult individual are determined by genes which are arranged in a linear order in the chromosomes.

Recent Advances In Human Genetics - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, Karl A. Stiles

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Advances in human genetics are taking place on several fronts; and despite the diversity of attacks on the problems involved, the author of this paper will limit himself to a few areas in which he and his students have either done some research or have a special interest. Every year some advances are being made in our knowledge of the inheritance of physical traits and an attempt will be made to briefly indicate some of the achievements and problems encountered in this field of study. The writer has been making a number of studies of the inheritance of physical traits.

A Micro Method For The Determination Of Ethyl Alcohol In Blood, V. B. Fish, V. E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In connection with some work on the physiological effects of ethyl alcohol on rats being done in this laboratory, it was essential to have a rapid and accurate method for the determination of ethyl alcohol in small samples of blood

The Embryology Of The English Sparrow (Abstract), Warren N. Keck Jan 1941

The Embryology Of The English Sparrow (Abstract), Warren N. Keck

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this investigation is three-fold: (1) to outline the general embryogeny of the English Sparrow, (2) to determine the relative rates of differentiation of the various external features and (3) to compare the developmental rates of the sparrow with those of the chick and turkey. Two questions arise from the fact that the incubation period of the sparrow is 13 days, while that of the chick is 21 and the turkey 28 days: (1) Is it possible to establish corresponding stages in the three embryos, or do the different organs develop at different times? (2) Are the three …

The Influence Of Sodium Fluoride Upon The Composition Of Tibiae Of Rats Partially Recovering From Rickets, C. A. Kempf, V. E. Nelson Jan 1941

The Influence Of Sodium Fluoride Upon The Composition Of Tibiae Of Rats Partially Recovering From Rickets, C. A. Kempf, V. E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

McClure (1) has recently called attention to the need for additional information dealing with the localization of fluorine in teeth and bones and with associative factors invoked in its absorption and metabolism. The work of Roholm (2) and Shortt (3) with the human being appeared to support this viewpoint strongly. Roholm (2) found that fluoride may cause either osteomalacia or osteosclerosis and that storage of fluorine in the bodies of female workers in the cryolite industry in Denmark was sometimes sufficiently great that, even after they left the factory, enough fluorine to cause tooth damage was secreted in their milk. …

Changes In Susceptibility To X-Rays Of Certain Embryonic Cells Of The Grasshopper (Abstract), J. C. Slaughter, T. C. Evans, J. P. Goodrich Jan 1941

Changes In Susceptibility To X-Rays Of Certain Embryonic Cells Of The Grasshopper (Abstract), J. C. Slaughter, T. C. Evans, J. P. Goodrich

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Eggs of Melanoplus differentialis were irradiated with dosages of 1,000-10,000 roentgens, in steps of 1,000 on each of the first six days after laying. Gross and microscopical studies of the eggs were made after the controls had reached diapause. It was found that the radiation on the first and second days had prevented subsequent development of all cells. Irradiation after the second day inhibited the development only of the cells of the embryo proper. It is therefore indicated that the yolk and serosa cells undergo 1:1 marked increase in their resistance to X-rays after the second day. The yolk and …

Selective Mating In The Earthworm (Lumbricus Terrestris L.), Hugh Clark Jan 1941

Selective Mating In The Earthworm (Lumbricus Terrestris L.), Hugh Clark

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Selective or assortative mating has been discussed under the term "homogamy," which has been defined by Harris (3) as "the mating of physically or psychically similar individuals." The phenomenon has been observed in the plant kingdom [see D. F. Jones (5) J and in several phyla of the animal kingdom, including Protozoa and Chordata. Willoughby and Pomerat (9) have reviewed homogamy with respect to physical characters, and the evidence for influence of psychic factors in mate selection has been summarized by H. E. Jones (6) and Schiller (8). This paper will report (1) certain quantitative findings on the existence and …

The Effects Of Ultracentrifuging Germinating Seeds Of Onion And Rye, James J. Hilbe Jan 1941

The Effects Of Ultracentrifuging Germinating Seeds Of Onion And Rye, James J. Hilbe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Normally, the process of mitosis is an orderly, integrated series of events, that is, karyokinesis and cytokinesis are usually linked together and function as one continuous process. Occasionally, however, either one or both of these processes may be interfered with in some way so that a dissociation takes place between the two. This gives rise to an abnormal situation so that each process may proceed independently of the other or one may be inhibited while the other goes on uninterrupted. The most common abnormal condition of this type is the inhibition of cell cleavage while nuclear division continues, resulting in …

Experimental Modification Of X-Ray Injury To The Skin Of New-Born Rats (Abstract), J. P. Goodrich, T. C. Evans, J. C. Slaughter Jan 1941

Experimental Modification Of X-Ray Injury To The Skin Of New-Born Rats (Abstract), J. P. Goodrich, T. C. Evans, J. C. Slaughter

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

New-born rats have been irradiated with dosages of 300 to 3,000· roentgens and the effects noted on the skin (histologically) two weeks later. It was found that animals irradiated at temperatures of 0-10 degrees C. were much more resistant to the radiation than those at room temperature. It was also found that at 30 and 35 degrees C. the injury produced was greater than that at 25 degrees C. The effect of the temperature changes appears to be due (at least in part) to alterations produced in metabolic conditions. This conclusion is based on experiments in which the resistance was …

Application Of Genetics To Animal Breeding - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, Jay L. Lush Jan 1941

Application Of Genetics To Animal Breeding - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, Jay L. Lush

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Animal breeding is is an old art, which long ago developed far beyond the scientific knowledge of the subject. By actual experience men built up certain rules as to what practices were or were not good procedure for a given set of conditions. Man naturally devised philosophical explanations which more or less satisfied his intellect as he went along. But it would be a far stretch of the imagination to call those explanations scientific.
