Noteworthy People of UNI Documents

Mona Van Duyn graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC) in 1942 with three majors: English, Speech, and French. More importantly, she began to take herself seriously as a poet at ISTC. She often made the three-mile walk west of Cedar Falls to visit poet James Hearst. After college, and a Master's Degree from the University of Iowa, Van Duyn went on to teach at the University of Louisville, and Washington University in St. Louis. She has won every major U.S. poetry prize, including the National Book Award and the Pulitzer. UNI awarded her an Honorary Doctor of Literature Degree …

The Distribution Of Alcohol In The Tissues Of The Rat, V. B. Fish, V. E. Nelson Jan 1942

The Distribution Of Alcohol In The Tissues Of The Rat, V. B. Fish, V. E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In order to determine the distribution of alcohol in the tissues, we have devised a method which is quite simple and accurate. The animal is killed and the tissues removed as rapidly as possible. The tissues are placed in weighed 150 ml. extraction flasks immersed in solid carbon dioxide. The flasks and tissues are weighed and the tissues covered with a solution of picric and tartaric acids. The samples are then placed in a refrigerator until the analysis can be made.

Mme. Caroline Testout: The Grand Dame Of The Roses, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In all breeding work one finds that certain individuals are outstanding in the production of superior progeny. In animal breeding these individuals form the basis for pedigreed stock. An intensive study on the parentage of rose varieties has revealed that certain roses also have produced more named offspring than others. To obtain this information, it was necessary to make a search through the world's most important literature on the rose. This study resulted in the compilation of an index of about 5,000 rose varieties on which parentage data had been recorded.

Formation And Properties Of Some Uretediones, Harlan B. Freyermuth, L. Chas. Raiford Jan 1942

Formation And Properties Of Some Uretediones, Harlan B. Freyermuth, L. Chas. Raiford

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

ofmann (Ber., 4, 246. 1871.) found that triethylphosphine served as a catalyst to cause the polymerization of phenyl isocyanate to a dimer which he designated as diphenyl diisocyanate. Staudinger ("Die Ketene", Enke, Stuttgart, 1912, p. 126.) regarded this product as a four atomic ring derivative. It has now been found that triethylphosphine polymerizes a number of substituted phenylisocyanates, such as λ- and β-naphthyl isocyanates, and p-xenyl isocyanate. These products which have more recently been listed as derivatives of uretedione, react with aliphatic amines to produce substituted biurets.

The Liverworts Of Iowa, Henry S. Conard Jan 1942

The Liverworts Of Iowa, Henry S. Conard

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The collections of moss plants from the State of Iowa have been examined to such an extent that we feel warranted in making a statement of our present knowledge of the species of liverworts and their distribution in the State. While many collections of true mosses have not yet been examined, all of the packets known to contain liverworts have been studied, so far as known to us. It seems unlikely that any additional species will appear in the collections already made. Probably a few extensions of range will be found. This report will indicate the lacunae in our knowledge …

Nutritional Factors In Plant Growth And Development - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Sixth Annual Meeting, W. F. Loehwing Jan 1942

Nutritional Factors In Plant Growth And Development - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Sixth Annual Meeting, W. F. Loehwing

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The large number of recent publications on the physiology of plant development reflects a widespread, contemporary interest in this subject. Researches in this area deal chiefly with the effects of specific growth substances and mineral nutrients on functional and structural ontogeny. The major contributions on the physiology of growth substances have already been conveniently assembled in certain excellent monographs (36, 53, 283, 339, 424) and reviews (37, 422, 192). Recent researches on nutrition in relation to plant development have not as yet been comprehensively reviewed. Data in this field as a whole are extremely diverse, especially as they relate to …

The Measurement Of Visual Phenomena By Means Of The Electroretinogram, Theodore Louis Jahn Jan 1942

The Measurement Of Visual Phenomena By Means Of The Electroretinogram, Theodore Louis Jahn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Whenever light strikes the eye of an animal there is a voltage difference produced between the front and back of the eye. This voltage difference originates in the retina of the vertebrate eye and in the sense cells of the compound eye. A record of the voltage change may be obtained by means of an oscillograph and is referred to as an electroretinogram (ERG). The electroretinogram may be used for the study of various visual phenomena.

The Effect Of Oral And Intraperitoneal Administration Of Alcohol Upon The Concentration Of Alcohol In The Blood Of The Rat, V. B. Fish, V. E. Nelson Jan 1942

The Effect Of Oral And Intraperitoneal Administration Of Alcohol Upon The Concentration Of Alcohol In The Blood Of The Rat, V. B. Fish, V. E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A number of experiments were made in this laboratory to determine the rate of absorption of alcohol into the blood of rats after the administration of alcohol both orally and by intraperitoneal injection. Both fasted and unfasted rats were used in these experiments.

The Isolation Of New Antioxidants From Vegetable Fats, Calvin Golumbic Jan 1942

The Isolation Of New Antioxidants From Vegetable Fats, Calvin Golumbic

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Many vegetable oils owe their resistance to oxidative deterioration to the presence of natural inhibitors (inhibitols) such as the tocopherols. Equally important antioxygenic factors are the chroman-5, 6-quinones, the reduced forms of which have now been isolated from hydrogenated vegetable fat substrates by chromatographic adsorption on activated alumina. The adsorbed zone contained colorless antioxygenic substances, other than tocopherols, which lost their activity after acetylation but not after oxidation with ferric or gold chlorides. Concentrates obtained from the oxidized fractions, showed the qualitative chemical and spectral absorptive properties of the chroman-5, 6-quinones. The source of these highly colored o-quinones is thus …

Raman Effect Of Sodium Cyanide, Geo. Glockler, H. T. Baker Jan 1942

Raman Effect Of Sodium Cyanide, Geo. Glockler, H. T. Baker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In another study we wished to use the Raman line of sodium cyanide solution as a reference spectrum. We find that potassium cyanide solutions but not sodium cyanide have been studied by Pal and Sen Gupta (1930). It is well known that electrolytes which are strong salts and hence highly ionized in solution give Raman lines only of their ions in case the latter are complex. Hence only the Raman spectrum of the cyanide ion is to he expected from any cyanide solution independent of the positive ion.

Teaching To Think In A Field Rather Than About It, E. W. Lindstrom Jan 1942

Teaching To Think In A Field Rather Than About It, E. W. Lindstrom

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Perhaps the clearest definition of thinking in a field of study as the preferable educational approach is to recall Hazlitt's essay "On the Ignorance of the Learned" where he says, "If we wish to know the force of human genius we should read Shakespeare. If we wish to see the insignificance of human learning, we may study his commentators." Strong words, but they bring out the point. If not, think in terms of pure text-book learning.

Comparative Studies On Gonad Development In The Rat, The Pig And In Cattle, J. D. Thomson Jan 1942

Comparative Studies On Gonad Development In The Rat, The Pig And In Cattle, J. D. Thomson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The relatively clear and simple developmental pattern of the frog gonad (Witschi 1914, 1924, 1929) makes it a good basic type with which to compare the sex glands of higher vertebrates. The origin and development of the elements of the sex glands of higher vertebrates, especially mammals, are not as clear as in amphibia.

The Mouth Parts Of The Firebrat Thermobia Domestica (Packard), (Thysanura), Roberta O'Harra, J. Alfred Adams Jan 1942

The Mouth Parts Of The Firebrat Thermobia Domestica (Packard), (Thysanura), Roberta O'Harra, J. Alfred Adams

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this paper is to present detailed drawings of the external form of the mouth parts of the adult firebrat, as a representative lepismatid. That the Lepismatidae, or silverfish insects, are of great significance in insect morphology, is well known to students of the subject. In certain respects they are the principle morphological link between the Apterygota and the Pterygota. While any of the widely distributed, domestic species of Lepisma or Ctenolepisma might well be used for morphological study, the firebrat, Thermobia domestica, is the species which seems to us the most likely to be practical for use …

The Histology Of The Digestive Tract Of The Cluster Fly, Pollenia Rudis, David T. Jones Jan 1941

The Histology Of The Digestive Tract Of The Cluster Fly, Pollenia Rudis, David T. Jones

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Pollenia rudis (Fabricius), the cluster fly, is a common household pest in Iowa in the fall, winter, and early spring. This house fly is readily distinguished from Musca domestica L. by its thoracic pubescence of fine crinkled golden hairs, its sluggish, almost tame habits, and its parasitizing woodland earthworms of the genus Helodrilus (De Coursey 1927) instead of breeding in horse manure. The flies were readily available indoors at Ames throughout the winter, as they emerged a few at a time from hibernation in window crevices, from moldings, and from behind furniture.

The Biological Action Of Rotenone On Freshwater Animals, Howard Laverne Hamilton Jan 1941

The Biological Action Of Rotenone On Freshwater Animals, Howard Laverne Hamilton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The physiological properties of rotenone have been extensively studied by Van Hasselt (1), Haag (2), and many others1. The history, distribution, and chemical properties of the alkaloid, which has been isolated as a white crystalline material (Greshoff, 5), are adequately reviewed by Leonard (4) and also by Van Hasselt and Haag. Rotenone first attracted scientific attention when it was found that preparations of powdered derris root had excellent insecticidal properties. Subsequent experiments were devised to test its action on various vertebrate animals, in order to make certain that the lethal concentration for insects would not be deleterious to …
