Illustrations Of The Fleshy Fungi Of Iowa I. The Purple-Brown Spored Agarics, J. C. Gilman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the functions of the Iowa Academy of Science is to acquaint ourselves with the flora and fauna of our state and to make record of the occurrence of plants or animals which have some peculiarly desirable or undesirable character which makes them noteworthy. We have many papers and scattered references to the fungus flora of the state, but at no time have adequate illustrations of the fleshy-fungi occurring here been published. I propose, therefore, to gather into this series of notes illustrations of the more common fleshy-fungi of Iowa in order that the interested membership may become more …

Liverworts Of The So-Called Unglaciated Area Of Iowa, Henry S. Conard Jan 1940

Liverworts Of The So-Called Unglaciated Area Of Iowa, Henry S. Conard

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For ten years it has been well known to geologists that all of the State of Iowa was at one time or another covered by Pleistocene ice. The northeastern corner of the State is usually mapped as unglaciated - a part of "the unglaciated area" which includes adjacent corners of Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. At no time was this area an island in a sea of ice as the maps suggest. It was once swept on the west by a glacier that extended far to the south. At another time the area was swept by ice on the east. The …

A Study Of The Urogenital Systems Of Emys Blandingii, With Observations On The Occurance Of Mullerian Ducts In Males, Frank A. Nicholson, P. L. Risley Jan 1940

A Study Of The Urogenital Systems Of Emys Blandingii, With Observations On The Occurance Of Mullerian Ducts In Males, Frank A. Nicholson, P. L. Risley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is somewhat surprising that accurate information concerning the urogenital systems and cloacae of male and female turtles is not readily available to the student of comparative anatomy. Literature pertaining to the urogenital system of turtles is concerned mostly with species alien to North America, and is mainly in foreign publications; also, most illustrations do not give clear or precise impressions of these structures. The information available either is of a too general nature and includes somewhat superficial observations on numbers of species, or is concerned with only a single aspect of the entire system. In view of this, it …

Differences In The Phosphatase Systems Of Plant And Animal Tissue By A Michrotechnic, James J. Hilbe, T. U. Marron Jan 1940

Differences In The Phosphatase Systems Of Plant And Animal Tissue By A Michrotechnic, James J. Hilbe, T. U. Marron

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Gomori1 has shown the location of phosphatase m animal organs by a michrotechnic. The principle is as follows: tissue sections are incubated in the presence of a substrate. Phosphate ions will be split off by the enzyme and in the presence of the calcium ion will form insoluble calcium phosphate at the point of liberation. Calcium phosphate can be converted to a dark colored insoluble precipitate. The visible precipitate then indicates the location of the phosphatase. The purpose of this research has been to subject the plant material to a similar procedure and so demonstrate any similarity or dissimilarity …

Vitamins In Plants, Norman Ashwell Clark Jan 1940

Vitamins In Plants, Norman Ashwell Clark

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The particular part of this rather broad subject to which I want to call your attention this afternoon, concerns the synthesis of vitamins in plants, and some factors which influence their production. I shall illustrate from a number of experiments, including those which we have carried out at Iowa State College on the formation of vitamins A, B1 and C. Although some vitamins, for example A and D, may be manufactured in the animal body, the ultimate source of most of the vitamins is the plant kingdom. Animals get their vitamins either directly from plants, or indirectly by varying …

The Effect Of Various Growth-Promoting Substances On The Reproduction Of Lemna, Norman Ashwell Clark, Elmer E. Frahm Jan 1940

The Effect Of Various Growth-Promoting Substances On The Reproduction Of Lemna, Norman Ashwell Clark, Elmer E. Frahm

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

About 20 years ago, Bottomley (3), at the University of London, failed to secure normal growth of Lemna and other plants in inorganic salt solutions without the addition of organic matter. He concluded that special compounds, similar to vitamins for animals, were required by plants. These unknown substances were termed auximones. Mockeridge (20, 21) using solutions identical with those employed by Bottomley, found that a decided stimulation of the rate of reproduction of Lemna was produced by various nucleic acid derivatives isolated from soil and manure. Azotobacter and yeast were also found to contain accessories for plant growth, and the …

Food Habits Of The Western Painted Turtle, Chrysemys Marginata Bellii Gray, Emery G. Fritsch Jan 1940

Food Habits Of The Western Painted Turtle, Chrysemys Marginata Bellii Gray, Emery G. Fritsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This investigation summarizes an attempt to obtain conclusive evidence as to food habits of one of our very common turtles, Chrysemys marginata bellii (Gray). In the literature of the food habits of turtles little data is recorded in regard to Chrysemys marginata bellii, although there is much scattered information concerning other species of this genus. The food habits of many of our turtles on the other hand have been briefly reveiwed by Ditmars (1), Babcock (2), Morgan (3), Ruthven (4), and Surface (5). Surface has studied the food habits of several species of turtles and his data seem to be …

Histological Observations On The Epiphysis Cerebri And On The Chorioid Plexus Of The Third Ventricle Of The Dog, W. G. Venzke, J. W. Gilmore Jan 1940

Histological Observations On The Epiphysis Cerebri And On The Chorioid Plexus Of The Third Ventricle Of The Dog, W. G. Venzke, J. W. Gilmore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The epiphysis cerebri has long been a subject of considerable interest and until only very recent time has its histological components been elucidated in several species. The physiological role of the epiphysis in the body has not yet been worked out. From time to time the histological as well as the physiological conceptions regarding this organ have changed. Galena (8) first regarded this organ as a gland. Later Descartes (6) regarded the epiphysis as the seat of the soul. These suggestions have been followed by others which consider the epiphysis as an organ with a purely mechanical role concerned with …

The Address Of The President: Science And Progress, R. B. Mcclenon Jan 1940

The Address Of The President: Science And Progress, R. B. Mcclenon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Science and human welfare have always risen and fallen together. We find this generalization borne out in all recorded history, and even farther back in the dim horizons of prehistory. From the first attempts at counting and measuring, observation of the precision of the periodic recurrence of the seasons, forging of metal tools and weapons, domestication of animals, planting and harvesting of crops, we see that the slow advance of the status of man in his world has been accompanied or even preceded by the advance in science. In the earlier stages, of course, we find art, culture, and the …

Ambisexuality And Sex Differentiation In Ambystoma, Winifred M. Gilbert Jan 1940

Ambisexuality And Sex Differentiation In Ambystoma, Winifred M. Gilbert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent and extensive use of Ambystoma for experimental work in sex differentiation necessitates knowledge of the normal development of their gonads. From the work of Burns, Humphrey, and Witschi, it has become quite clear that often in male salamanders a considerable cortical development accompanies that of the medullary testicular differentiation. Such ambisexual and hermaphrodite features may be expected to have either genetical or environmental causes. Genetical differences can be studied by raising groups of individuals from different localities under identical laboratory conditions. On the other hand, physiological effects of the environment should be brought out if genetically identical lots are …

Some Abnormalities Of A Pair Of Siamese Twin Lambs, Carroll Padley, James Shipley Jan 1940

Some Abnormalities Of A Pair Of Siamese Twin Lambs, Carroll Padley, James Shipley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An interesting problem in the study of anatomy was presented by a pair of Siamese lambs recently brought to our laboratory. The lambs were from a Shropshire ewe that had given birth to normally developed twins the previous season. The Siamese lambs were delivered with much difficulty and as a consequence, they were damaged at the region of fusion causing an internal disruption of their organs. Although the lambs were alive immediately after delivery, the damage to their organs brought death within a few minutes.

The Influence Of Colchicine On The Germ Cells Of Insects, Melanoplus Differentialis And Gryllus Assimilis, With Special Reference To The Cytoplasmic Inclusions, Thomas P. Dooley Jan 1939

The Influence Of Colchicine On The Germ Cells Of Insects, Melanoplus Differentialis And Gryllus Assimilis, With Special Reference To The Cytoplasmic Inclusions, Thomas P. Dooley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Colchicine injected into the body cavity of insects affects the mitotic process of the germ cells by destroying the spindle. The chromosomes become clumped or scattered depending upon the concentration of the colchicine used. The injections were of .OS5cc. of concentrations ranging from .5 per cent — .O5 per cent solutions. A testis from an animal injected with colchicine often shows numerous giant spermatids. Accompanying this karyokinetic disturbance the mitochondria, which are generally in the form of threads along the spindle fibers during the metaphase and anaphase, fail to assume such arrangement. They are found diffused in the cytoplasm in …

Electrical Activity Of The Invertebrate Eye In Response To Illumination, Frederick Crescitelli, Theodore L. Jahn Jan 1939

Electrical Activity Of The Invertebrate Eye In Response To Illumination, Frederick Crescitelli, Theodore L. Jahn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Definite electrical changes can be detected in the eyes of many animals in response to illumination of the eyes. In the vertebrate eye these changes take the form of characteristic electrical variations known successively as the a-, b-, c-, and d-waves. Similar waves can be elicited from the compound eyes of a number of invertebrates. The simplest method of studying these electrical changes in invertebrates is to lead off by silver-silver chloride electrodes from fluid-filled chambers built around each eye. One eye is illuminated while the second eye is kept in darkness. The electrical potentials are amplified by means of …

Observations Upon Bogs Of Northern Iowa, Charles Carter Jan 1939

Observations Upon Bogs Of Northern Iowa, Charles Carter

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Observations upon bogs in the vicinity of the Okoboji Lakes in Northern Iowa were made in summers of 1936-37-38. The area was about thirty-five by twenty-five miles. The locations of these hogs are for the most part on the east or north slope of glacial hills in the Wisconsin and Iowan drift sheets. In general these bogs are rounded elevations a foot to twenty feet in height. Water issues from the apex of a mound and flows down over the surfaces forming small pools. The flow is independent of local rainfall. The temperature is uniform in all bogs studied although …
