Response Of Pine Seedlings To Site Selection On Eroded Soils, J. M. Aikman Jan 1945

Response Of Pine Seedlings To Site Selection On Eroded Soils, J. M. Aikman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Pine seedlings have been planted by the millions, during the last decade, as a part of the operations program of the Soil Conservation Service. Although a plantation was usually made primarily as a soil conservation measure, interest often centered in its utilization for one or more other purposes: wildlife cover, shelterbelt, poles, lumber, landscape beautification. The trees were planted in a wide variety of locations: gullies, slides, eroded slopes, spoil banks, borrow pits and others. The variation in site quality has been greater than in site location. All aspects and almost every degree of slope is represented in these plantings …

The Selection Of Prairie Areas In Iowa Which Should Be Preserved, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1933, the Iowa Board of Conservation and the Iowa Fish and Game Commission now known as the Iowa State Conservation Commission prepared a report known as the Iowa Twenty-Five Year Conservation Plan. It was designated as a program for the judicious use of Iowa's natural resources. In the section of the Twenty-Five Year Plan listing and describing Scientific Preserves one type is recommended which had not been included previously. It is the Prairie Preserve.

Vegetation And Agriculture Of Liberia And Adjacent West Africa, Robert M. Warner Jan 1945

Vegetation And Agriculture Of Liberia And Adjacent West Africa, Robert M. Warner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper treats agriculture in its broadest sense, including the useful plant products of the native vegetation as well as those which are actually cultivated by the native peoples. The vegetation, climate, and geography, as well as the agriculture of Liberia, are intimately related to that of the whole West Africa. For this reason the discussion, although chiefly concerned with Liberia, is not confined to its narrow boundaries. As the native vegetation is considered, the natural products from it are discussed.

The Degree Of Extensional Agreement Among Twenty Psychologists In Their Use Of The Labels Hypothesis, Theory And Law, Wendell Johnson, John T. Wilson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study represents an attempt to measure the degree of extensional agreement among a group of psychologists in their usage of certain labels, which were familiar to and commonly employed by all members of the group. Specifically, the problem was to measure the degree of agreement among the twenty psychologists as to the applicability of the three labels, hypothesis, theory and law to a group of twenty statements, each of which had been labelled in one of the three ways by the original author of the statement.

The Survey Courses In Science, C. W. Lantz Jan 1944

The Survey Courses In Science, C. W. Lantz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

What should be the nature of the beginning courses in science in our colleges? There has been much criticism directed at these courses. The criticism is usually to the effect that they are too technical and are planned to meet the needs of those who are going to be specialists in some field of science whereas relatively few will continue in a particular field of science. The courses are said to be unrelated to everyday life, whereas what is needed are courses that will give an understanding and an appreciation of modern science as it applies to everyday life in …

The Spread Of Perennial Sow Thistle In Iowa, Ada Hayden Jan 1944

The Spread Of Perennial Sow Thistle In Iowa, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sow thistle is not a thistle as the common name implies, but it belongs nevertheless to the Thistle Family, Compositae. The genus Sonchus, according to Hegi (1931), is widely distributed in cultivated parts of the temperate and even the subtropical world, and the four ruderal species, now extending their range in North America, are found in Europe, Asia, parts of Africa, and South America. They include the perennials Sonchus arvensis L. and Sonchus arvensis L. var. glabrescens Guenth., Grab., and Wimm. as well as the annuals Sonchus asper (L.) Hill and Sonchus oleraceus L.

Modification Of Blood By Zeolites For Transfusion Purposes, Walter J. Sweet, O. R. Sweeney Jan 1944

Modification Of Blood By Zeolites For Transfusion Purposes, Walter J. Sweet, O. R. Sweeney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Richard Lower made the first blood transfusion in 1665, but the wide use of the technique in medicine is quite recent. One of the difficulties lay in the coagulation of the blood during the transfer. Accordingly, the blood is generally treated with sodium citrate to prevent this. It is known that calcium in the blood has something to do with the coagulation and probably with the agglutination. It was decided to study blood from which the calcium had been removed. To remove the calcium we adopted the principle used in removing calcium from hard water, that is, passing· it over …

Scholastic Progress Of Students Entering The Iowa State College With Low High School Averages, John L. Holmes Jan 1944

Scholastic Progress Of Students Entering The Iowa State College With Low High School Averages, John L. Holmes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the fall quarters of 1939 and 1940 students entering the Iowa State College directly from high school with averages below 1.5l1 were grouped together in a "pre-admission guidance" program. In the two years considered, ninety-six students with high school averages below 1.51 entered the Iowa State College. The program was the same for both years. The students included in the program were asked to be on the campus two days before regular freshman week began. During these two days they were given tests of scholastic ability, silent reading skills, English and mathematics achievement. Fall quarter class schedules were made …
