Congenital Abnormalities Associated With Vitamin E Malnutrition, Byron H. Thomas, Dorothy Wei Cheng Jan 1952

Congenital Abnormalities Associated With Vitamin E Malnutrition, Byron H. Thomas, Dorothy Wei Cheng

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Congenital abnormalities are known to occur occasionally in man and farm livestock, and frequently in laboratory animals subjected to certain types of experimentation. A high percentage of the cases are fatal to the young depending on the nature and severity of the complications. In many instances death of the affected young occurs during pregnancy or parturition. Should the feti survive parturition death usually follows shortly thereafter. Extended survival occurs in a small percentage of young and these are mildly to severely handicapped in one or more of a multiplicity of ways. There are many causes of congenital abnormalities. Some are …

A Four-Winged Domestic Fowl, Grover C. Hawk Jan 1952

A Four-Winged Domestic Fowl, Grover C. Hawk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Variations in structure in any given species of animal, range from the most minute structures that can be examined by microscopic or other technical means, to the gross items that are easily discernable with the unaided eye. Such variations are of extreme interest to the biologist and serve to forcibly remind him of the vast range of variations possible in any given species. The report on the present specimen seeks, not to present it as a monstrosity of the strange and unusual type, but rather to relate it in some measure with the usual development in chicks and to some …

Electron Micrographs Of The Nematocysts Of Hydra, Marietta Issidorides, H. W. Beams, A. W. Sedar, T. C. Evans Jan 1952

Electron Micrographs Of The Nematocysts Of Hydra, Marietta Issidorides, H. W. Beams, A. W. Sedar, T. C. Evans

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Seventeen different kinds of nematocysts have been described and classified by Weill (1930) on the basis of the characteristics of the discharged tube. Only four of these are known to be present on hydras, namely, volvents (desmonemes), streptoline glutinants (holotrichous isorhizas), stereoline glutinants (atrichous isorhizes), and penetrants (stenoteles). The discharged penetrant (fig. 1) consists of the capsule a, butt, which is composed of the shaft b, stylet c, spinneret d, and tube e. In the glutinants the tube is attached directly to the tube, and is either spiny (streptoline glutinant) or smooth (stereoline glutinant). In the resting nematocyst all the …

The Effect Of Initial Massing Of Practice On The Transfer Task In A Proactive Interference Situation, Abram M. Barch Jan 1952

The Effect Of Initial Massing Of Practice On The Transfer Task In A Proactive Interference Situation, Abram M. Barch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Virtually all motor learning studies have shown spaced practice to be superior to massed practice. Most of the apparent exceptions, such as the work of Cook, involve tasks in which symbolic responses play a dominant role - such tasks as spider mazes, punch board mazes, mechanical puzzles, etc. (1, 2). The few remaining exceptions are studies in which the term "spaced practice" is a misnomer. That is, the performance of the so-called "spaced" groups was affected as much by the inhibitory effects of work decrement as was the performance of the massed practice groups (3).

An Aftonian Plant Locality In Lee County, Iowa, L. R. Wilson Jan 1952

An Aftonian Plant Locality In Lee County, Iowa, L. R. Wilson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Organic remains in glacial drifts and interglacial deposits are relatively abundant in Iowa and serve as valuable aids for the resolution of certain Pleistocene problems. The existence of fossils in the glacial deposits was early recognized and became one of the criteria for the separation of drift sheets (McGee, 1878). In 1895 T. C. Chamberlain noted the presence of peat separating two tills in the Afton Junction-Thayer region of Union County, Iowa. The name Aftonian was applied in connection with these interglacial deposits and has become the established designation of the oldest recognized interglacial stage in North America.

Behavior Associated With Age And Audiogenic Seizures In An Inbred Strain Of Mice, Wayne C. Bruce Jan 1952

Behavior Associated With Age And Audiogenic Seizures In An Inbred Strain Of Mice, Wayne C. Bruce

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Behavior disorders or so-called "experimental neuroses" have been observed by many investigators in a variety of species. Finger1 indicates that convulsive behavior has been studied experimentally in such mammals as the cat, dog, mouse, rabbit and pig. Hall and Martin2 refer to behavior disorders in the chimpanzee and rat. So far as is known only rats and mice have been found susceptible to audiogenic seizures. It has been found that abnormal behavior may be elicited by a variety of stimuli such as conflict, sound, electric shock, drugs, and ·dietary deficiency. Although the literature appears to indicate that a …

An Annotated List Of The Lygaeidae Of Iowa And Illinois (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), James A. Slater Jan 1952

An Annotated List Of The Lygaeidae Of Iowa And Illinois (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), James A. Slater

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In this paper an attempt has been made to present an adequate list of Lygaeidae found in Iowa and Illinois, and to indicate what is known of the intrastate distributions of the various species. This paper is limited to geographic considerations and, in this sense, assumes the character of a "local list"' as no biological or ecological considerations are discussed. It is felt that our knowledge of the Nearctic Lygaeidae has reached a degree of maturity where knowledge of state and lesser faunal areas is essential to encourage the badly needed bionomic work that should develop with a relatively stable …

A Study Of The Artifacts Of The Post-Columbian Indian Culture Of The Southeastern United States, John Stouffer Jan 1952

A Study Of The Artifacts Of The Post-Columbian Indian Culture Of The Southeastern United States, John Stouffer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is an effort to study and analyze some of the culture objects of the early American Indians of the Southeastern United States. The source of these is the A. J. Powers Collection which is presently on exhibit in the Museum of Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa.

A Study Of Tissues About A Large Leaf Mine, Robert B. Wylie Jan 1952

A Study Of Tissues About A Large Leaf Mine, Robert B. Wylie

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The role of the epidermis in leaf organization has not been extensively explored. As a surface covering it affords some protection, but this is due chiefly to the cuticular film which protects both the epidermal layer and underlying cells. The importance of the epidermis, as a tissue of living cells, is probably much greater than has been generally realized. For this reason observations and experiments providing further information about the epidermis are of special interest. The present paper summarizes a study of a blotch-type leaf mine in the upper side of a leaf (Eupatorium purpureum), with special reference to its …

Increasing The Retention Of Nitrogen In Albino Rats Through Vitamin B12 Administration, Edmund Wei-Kuang Cheng, Byron H. Thomas Jan 1952

Increasing The Retention Of Nitrogen In Albino Rats Through Vitamin B12 Administration, Edmund Wei-Kuang Cheng, Byron H. Thomas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The growth promoting activity of vitamin B12 in rats has been demonstrated by many workers. Earliest among them was Emerson (1949) who showed that the retarding effect of thyroid powder when given to rats was counteracted by oral administration or subcutaneous injection of vitamin B12. Since 1949 many others have demonstrated the beneficial effect of B12 in augmenting growth in the young of several mammalian and avian species. Bioassay procedures for the estimation of vitamin BB are based on the capacity of B12 to stimulate growth. Cheng and Thomas (1950) showed that not only …

Vitamin B12 Content Of Kidneys As Determined By Different Bioassay Procedures, Edmund Wei-Kuang Cheng, Byron H. Thomas Jan 1951

Vitamin B12 Content Of Kidneys As Determined By Different Bioassay Procedures, Edmund Wei-Kuang Cheng, Byron H. Thomas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The existence of vitamin B12, often designated the antipernicious anemia or animal protein factor, as another member of the expanding family of vitamins is well established. As implied from its nomenclature, it belongs to the water soluble B-vitamins, but unlike most other vitamins in this group its chemical structure is unknown. Its nutritional importance to man, his monogastric farm animals and his poultry is recognized. For the present, at least, the supply consists primarily of concentrates. It is not to be inferred that crystalline B12 is unavailable. On the contrary, however, the supply is very limited and …
