A Cyano Compound Related To Acetylcholine, Calvin Hanna
A Cyano Compound Related To Acetylcholine, Calvin Hanna
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In recent years there has developed a keen interest in the limits through which chemical constitutional changes in biological potent drugs may be carried without great loss of their characteristic pharmacological activity. In this regard the present study concerns itself with the effect of replacing the acetate by a cyano group in acetylcholine.
Sketches Of Little Known Iowa Ornithologists, James Hodges
Sketches Of Little Known Iowa Ornithologists, James Hodges
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
It is not a rare event when one is making a detailed study of ornithology to come upon the names of older students of the subject that are apparently unknown to the ornithological public. Their only contribution to the subject may have been a regional or local list published in some obscure periodical or a set of unpublished journals kept over a period of years. It is my purpose to make an attempt to fill in some of these "unknowns" in our knowledge of historical ornithology. This paper contains three biographies: J. H. Paarmann; Hugo H. Schroder; Burtis H. Wilson.
Studies On Fungal Membranes, Lawrence Kaplan
Studies On Fungal Membranes, Lawrence Kaplan
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This study represents an attempt to apply established methods of detection for cellulose and chitin as structural materials in the mem· branes of a group of organisms consisting, for the greater part, of higher fungi. These methods have been combined with purification procedures resulting in a technique which has not been used previously on so broadly representative a group of higher fungi.
Factors Influencing The Extent Of Pulmonary Hemorrhage Following Explosive Decompression, H. H. Keasling, Calvin Hanna
Factors Influencing The Extent Of Pulmonary Hemorrhage Following Explosive Decompression, H. H. Keasling, Calvin Hanna
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In recent years there has been a great increase in interest in the effects of explosive decompression, primarily because this phenomenon represents a major hazard of high altitude flight. Majovski et. al. (1944) in their studies concerning the effect of vitamin-P-like materials on the incidence of lung hemorrhage, noted that the presence or absence of food in the stomach seemed to alter the nature of the response. Later Kibrick and Goldfarb (1944) reported that 20-27 hour fasting markedly reduced the incidence of lung hemorrhage compared with fed controls. In a previous report from this laboratory, Bass et. al. …
The Numbers Of Fungi, G. W. Martin
The Numbers Of Fungi, G. W. Martin
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In most reference and text-books on botany, the number of known species of fungi is given as from 75,000 to 100,000. The sources of these estimates are rarely cited but it may be inferred that most of them trace back, usually indirectly, to the number of descriptions compiled in the twenty-five volumes of Saccardo (8) which amounts to somewhat over 81,000, usually with a more or less generous allowance for the number of valid species described too late to be included in the last volume of that work, which appeared in 1931, and which have appeared since that time.
A Previously Unnamed Amoeba, Mayorella Clavella, Nov. Sp., Eugene Cleveland Bovee
A Previously Unnamed Amoeba, Mayorella Clavella, Nov. Sp., Eugene Cleveland Bovee
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
During the last quarter of the nineteenth century, a considerable number of investigators gained fame for their studies of the organisms usually placed in the order Amoebida, class Rhizopodea, subphylum Sarcodina, phylum Protozoa (Jahn, 1949), commonly referred to as the naked amoebas. Because these scientists were working in a relatively untouched field of investigation-which it still remains-their attempts to classify the organisms they saw and depicted resulted in considerable confusion as to which amoebas were really legitimate species, and which were simply varieties of established species. The inevitable "lumper" and "splitter" appeared amongst these men as they applied their taxonomic …

Effect Of Iodinated Casein And Thiouracil On The Concentrations Of Carotenoids And Vitamin A In The Blood Plasma Of Young Dairy Animals, R. S. Allen, G. H. Wise, N. L. Jacobson
Effect Of Iodinated Casein And Thiouracil On The Concentrations Of Carotenoids And Vitamin A In The Blood Plasma Of Young Dairy Animals, R. S. Allen, G. H. Wise, N. L. Jacobson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In recent years attention has been directed to the role of the thyroid gland in the metabolism of carotene and vitamin A. Drill and Truant (1947) reported that carotene administration failed to prevent xerophthalmia in thyroidectomized rats, whereas vitamin A supplementation cured the eye lesions. Moreover, Johnson and Baumann (1947), using liver storage of vitamin A as the criterion of conversion of carotene to vitamin A, found that hyperthyroid rats accumulated larger stores of vitamin A than normal rats receiving equivalent doses of carotene, but rats rendered hypothyroid by feeding either thiourea or thiouracil stored little vitamin A. Similar experiments …

Preliminary Report On The Distribution Of Bottom Organisms In West Lake Okoboji, Iowa, John E. Bardach, John Morrill, Frank Gambony
Preliminary Report On The Distribution Of Bottom Organisms In West Lake Okoboji, Iowa, John E. Bardach, John Morrill, Frank Gambony
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
"Little is known of the bottom fauna of the locality." This passage is taken from an Extension Bulletin of the State University of Iowa which describes the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory on West Lake Okoboji and its facilities for biological investigations. It should be stressed at the outse.t that there are few lakes which do not share with Okoboji this relatively unexplored state of their bottom biota. A study was begun in July 1950 with a view to eventually answering the following questions: 1. What is the distribution of macroscopic bottom dwelling animals in the lake? 2. Does this distribution follow …
The Role Of Albedo In Color Discrimination Of Spider Monkeys, Robert Q. Easter, Daryl G. Nichols
The Role Of Albedo In Color Discrimination Of Spider Monkeys, Robert Q. Easter, Daryl G. Nichols
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The problem of color discrimination of animals has been variously discussed by writers. While it is generally conceded that the cones are the receptors of color, the different theories of vision as expounded by Young and Helmholtz, Hering, Ladd-Franklin and others are not always in essential agreement that specific cones are the receptors of specific wave lengths of light. While form discrimination of rats has been clearly demonstrated in the researches of Fields, Fritz, Lashley and others, the discrimination of color by the lower forms of animals is not so well established. Writers also differ as to primates, but since …
Studies On Loricate Ciliophora Ii. Folliculina Boltoni Kent, John Meacham Hamilton
Studies On Loricate Ciliophora Ii. Folliculina Boltoni Kent, John Meacham Hamilton
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The family Folliculinidae is composed of ciliated Protozoa which belong to the order Spirotrichida. The family is characterized by a flask-shaped, transparent lorica and by a peristomial field drawn out into two wing-like projections which can be extended beyond the aperature of the lorica when the animal is feeding, and can be withdrawn into the lorica when the animal contracts. The known species of this family are all marine except for one fresh water form, Folliculina boltoni. This unique member of the family has been found in Europe and South America, and Wailes (1928) described it from a fresh …
The Status Of The Raccoon In Iowa For The Past Twenty Years As Revealed By Fur Reports, Glen C. Sanderson
The Status Of The Raccoon In Iowa For The Past Twenty Years As Revealed By Fur Reports, Glen C. Sanderson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In recent years the raccoon (Procyon lotor) has become more and more popular with 'coon hunters in Iowa. This is also true in many other Midwest and southern states. This increased interest in the raccoon as a game animal, plus the almost phenomenal increase in its numbers, has helped to focus much attention on this animal throughout the United States. Many papers dealing with various phases of the raccoon's life history and habits have appeared in the past few years. Few of these papers have presented actual figures on the trend of the population in any given area, …

The Professional Status Of The Biologist, Frank M. Semans
The Professional Status Of The Biologist, Frank M. Semans
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The term "biologist" may suggest a person who didn't quite succeed as a specialist, for biology after all is not a single science but a series of related sciences, whose relationships are not always obvious. The small liberal arts college biology professor and some of the naturalists have probably come closest to the category of "biologist," although neither· has been customarily designated specifically as a "biologist." In the past two decades a small number of private entomologists, usually known as "consulting entomologists," have appeared and managed in most cases not much more than barely to exist financially. Recently the term …

Response Of Veterinarians To The Strong Vocational Interest Blank For Men, Thomas E. Hannum
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The selection of students for the veterinary college at Iowa State College has become a real problem. Every year several times the enrollment capacity applies for entrance, and from this large group the few who are to be allowed admission must be carefully selected. In selecting these students, chief reliance has been placed on past scholastic records, both high school and pre-professional training in college, and upon various measures of scholastic aptitude. At present, a veterinary aptitude test is being developed by W. A. Owens of the Department of Psychology and L. C. Payne, School of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State …

Effect On Growth And Efficiency Of Food Utilization Of Quantity Of Protein And Vitamin B12 Supplementation, Edmund Wei Cheng, Byron H. Thomas
Effect On Growth And Efficiency Of Food Utilization Of Quantity Of Protein And Vitamin B12 Supplementation, Edmund Wei Cheng, Byron H. Thomas
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Certain nutritional and therapeutic values of liver extracts had been demonstrated experimentally again and again prior to 1948. Most of the early studies were related mainly to hematopoiesis (Subbarow et al., 1945), yet others were concerned with their capacity to augment the growth promoting properties of rations for chicks (Nichol et al., 1948), mice (Bosshardt et al., 1946) and rats (Jaffe, 1946; Sporn et al., 1947; Ershoff, 1947; Zucker, 1948). More recently the beneficial effects of liver extracts for hogs and poultry have been attributed to an unknown factor (s) tentatively identified as the "animal protein factor, APF." The identity …

Some Proboscidian Remains Found In Henry County, Keith Sutton
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
My object in preparing this account is to bring together all available data concerning Proboscidian remains which have been found or reported in Henry County, Iowa, and to make this information available to those interested. The tooth of a Mastodon that roamed this area of Iowa in the Pleistocene Age was found Southeast of Rome, Iowa by the author, February 1949, in Big Cedar Creek, in Tippicanoe Township, Section 17, on the Lynn Wright farm. The tooth is from species Elephas columbi. This elephant was taller than the Mammoth and rivalled the largest existing elephants in stature.
Exploratory Studies On The Constituents Of Scoparia Dulcis (Linn), Watler M. Budde, R. L. Shriner
Exploratory Studies On The Constituents Of Scoparia Dulcis (Linn), Watler M. Budde, R. L. Shriner
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In 1942 M. C. Nath of the University of Dacca in India reported that an Indian drug called amellin was effective orally in treating diabetes (1). From 1942-1947, seven additional papers have been published by Nath and co-workers (2) which describe the physiological effects of amellin and also clinical results on 15 patients. It is stated that oral doses of 15 to 20 mg. per day along with calcium salts over a period of several weeks to three months cause return of blood sugar to normal levels and disappearance of glycosuria and ketonuria. The only information about amellin given, was …
The Adaptability Of Several Histological Techniques To The Preparation Of P32 Radioautographs From Plant Tissues, Wayne J. Mcilrath
The Adaptability Of Several Histological Techniques To The Preparation Of P32 Radioautographs From Plant Tissues, Wayne J. Mcilrath
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
With the increased use of radioactive isotopes in plant research, there has been a corresponding increase in the application of radioautographic techniques. Through the use of such radioautographs, tissue localization of the radioactive elements has been accomplished thereby giving additional insight into the accumulation and role of various elements in specific tissues. One of the radioactive elements that has found widespread application in physiological research is P 32. Although a number of workers have prepared P32 autographs from unsectioned plant tissues, very few have been made using histological sections (McIlrath, 1948). Because of the widespread use of this …
