The Postglacial Phytogeography Of The Iowan Lobe, L. J. Eilers Jan 1965

The Postglacial Phytogeography Of The Iowan Lobe, L. J. Eilers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Iowan lobe of the Wisconsin glaciation is located in northeastern Iowa. Evidence is summarized which pertains to the migrations of the regional vegetation following the Wisconsin glaciations. The most recent climatic fluctuation to influence the distribution of the present flora was the Hypsithermal interval. The present distributions of several species are discussed in relation to the postglacial history of the flora. Eleven distribution maps of representative species are included. Most of the distribution patterns can be attributed to factors other than continuing postglacial migration. It appears that these plant distributions are primarily a function of the distribution of available …

The Histological Effects Of Tapazole On Rat Thyroids, Hearts, And Adrenals, Wade L. Collier Jan 1965

The Histological Effects Of Tapazole On Rat Thyroids, Hearts, And Adrenals, Wade L. Collier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The anti-thyroid drug Tapazole, when fed to white rats at the dietary level of 0.1% Tapazole in finely ground laboratory meal, produces changes in body weight, thyroid weight and in the histological composition of the thyroid. Histological examination shows that the affected thyroids have undergone hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Tapazole does not seem to affect rat hearts or adrenals.

Vertebrate Coactions With The Franklin Ground Squirrel, Emmett Polder Jan 1965

Vertebrate Coactions With The Franklin Ground Squirrel, Emmett Polder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Nearly 30 years of observation of Franklin ground squirrels in central and northeast Iowa indicates that they are of minor importance as prey for carnivorous birds, mammals, and reptiles. These ground squirrels are predators of some significance on eggs and young of ground-nesting birds and the helpless young of some small mammals. The Franklin squirrel burrows are of considerable importance as dens for long-tailed weasels and spotted skunks and are of seasonal value as retreats for young opossums, striped skunks, and mink during mid-summer dispersal. Amphibia use the dens as a moist daytime refuge during hot, dry weather and garter …

Life History Of The Northern Common Shiner, Notropis Cornutus Frontalis, In Boone County, Lowa, Everett Fee Jan 1965

Life History Of The Northern Common Shiner, Notropis Cornutus Frontalis, In Boone County, Lowa, Everett Fee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The northern common shiner, Notropis cornutus frontalis, was omnivorous in its feeding, but the type of food utilized was greatly influenced by water levels. Reproduction was later in Squaw Creek than in the Des Moines River. Males had consistently higher condition factors than females. Fish grew faster in Squaw Creek than in the Des Moines River but failed to reach the length of the Des Moines River fish in their first year because of a later spawning period. Myxosporidians, nematodes, tapeworms, and copepods parasitized this species.

The Antagonistic Effect Of Strontium Ions For Anesthetization Of Paramecium Caudatum With Nickel Lons, Clair G. Rausch Jan 1965

The Antagonistic Effect Of Strontium Ions For Anesthetization Of Paramecium Caudatum With Nickel Lons, Clair G. Rausch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this investigation was (1) to compute the effects of strontium ion antagonism and the observed biological effect of the strontium ion for anestesia of Paramecium caudatum with the nickel ion, (2) to compare the prolonged effect of the strontium ion antagonism for nickel ions upon the vitality of P. caudatum for control groups using the fission rate as an index of vitality. The experimental data showed a biological antagonism of the strontium ions for the nickel ions in anesthetization of P. caudatum. Further, the vitality study showed that the presence of strontium ions reduced the inhibitory effect …

Phase Contrast And Electron Microscopic Observations On Membranous Organelles In Myxomycete Plasmodia, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Karen Beall Jan 1965

Phase Contrast And Electron Microscopic Observations On Membranous Organelles In Myxomycete Plasmodia, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Karen Beall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Nuclei of the vegetative body of Stemonitis fusca have a nuclear membrane that is double and has pores and annuli. The nucleoplasm contains numerous chromocenters and a nucleolus that is without a limiting membrane and has the appearance of a nucleolonema. What appeared to be extensions of the nuclear membrane were often seen within the nucleoplasm, and structures resembling annulate lamellae were found near the outside of nuclei and elsewhere in the cytoplasm. Large blebs were sometimes seen extending outward from the nuclear membrane, and vesicles in the neighboring cytoplasm contained material identical in appearance with the contents of the …

Phase Contrast And Electron Microscopic Studies Of Nuclei Of Myxomycete Plasmodia, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Linda Ruch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Phase contrast and electron microscopic studies of the plasmodia of the phaneroplasmodium, aphanoplasmodium, and protoplasmodium types showed the presence of the usual organelles found in the cytoplasm of cells of higher organisms. Mitochondria are of the tubular type, there are both smooth and rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi membranes, vesicles and vacuoles of various types. Fibrils and filaments were seen in the cytoplasm, and there is a cell membrane of the usual type. Ribosomes and polysomes are seen in the ground plasm. No evidence of a centriole was ever seen.

Factors Affecting Winter Fish Kills In The Coralville Reservoir, Iowa, Donald B. Mcdonald, Robert D. Schmickle Jan 1965

Factors Affecting Winter Fish Kills In The Coralville Reservoir, Iowa, Donald B. Mcdonald, Robert D. Schmickle

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Coralville Reservoir, located on the Iowa River just upstream from Iowa City, has as its primary purpose the control of floods on the rivers downstream. A conservation pool is maintained for recreational purposes. During December 1964 and January 1965, a combination of rather unusual circumstances caused an almost complete depletion of oxygen in the reservoir and resulted in a fish kill. Oxygen demand of the incoming water from a sudden winter rain greatly exceeded the available oxygen dissolved in the lake. A heavy ice cover prevented the renewal of oxygen by wind action. The depletion continued until warm rains, …

Assessing The Connotative Strengths Of Random Shapes, Don Lewis, Joanna B. Boehnert Jan 1965

Assessing The Connotative Strengths Of Random Shapes, Don Lewis, Joanna B. Boehnert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

After sets of mutually equally discriminable random shapes, all generated from a single prototype, had been identified, the members of the several sets were immediately recognized as differing in associativeness or meaningfulness. The meaningfulness (m) of each shape was determined through an application of the production method. The computed values of m did not, in many cases, coincide with the meaningfulness of the shapes as judged by several trained observers. Satisfactory indices of the heterogeneity (and, conversely, the homogeneity) of the verbal responses to each of the shapes seemed impossible to obtain. Thereupon, the degree of appropriateness of each …

Sequential Effects Of Contingent And Non-Contingent Punishment, D. R. Brown, N. D. Kent Jan 1965

Sequential Effects Of Contingent And Non-Contingent Punishment, D. R. Brown, N. D. Kent

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Hooded rats were given extensive training on a VI 60" schedule until their response rate stabilized. Subsequently a punishment routine was initiated concurrently with the VI 60" for nineteen one hour sessions. While this routine was in effect, half of the Ss were administered a brief shock whenever they bar pressed; the other half served as tandem controls so the shocks which they received were not correlated with bar pressing. Two levels of shock intensity were employed: .2 and .4 ma. Behavior was suppressed in both treatment groups though to a much greater extent in the contingent group. Variations in …

Experimental Studies On The Dispersal Of The Frog, Rana Pipiens, Richard V. Bovbjerg Jan 1965

Experimental Studies On The Dispersal Of The Frog, Rana Pipiens, Richard V. Bovbjerg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Massive emigrations of the frog Rana pipiens pipiens Schreber have been recorded from large sloughs in northwestern Iowa. To investigate the possible ecological causes for this movement, two sets of laboratory experiments were done. A simulated slough was constructed in a large concrete tank and stocked with vegetation and a population of maturing tadpoles. As the time came for the emigration in the field, the experimental population, under the regulated laboratory conditions, had matured and emigrated in a way parallel to the natural situation. In other experiments, emigrations were determined for populations of juvenile frogs, one of which was five …

Effects Of Estradiol Hormone On The Maturation Of The Gonads And Associated Duct System Of The Fish Lebistes Reticulatus, Michael Thomas Story Jan 1965

Effects Of Estradiol Hormone On The Maturation Of The Gonads And Associated Duct System Of The Fish Lebistes Reticulatus, Michael Thomas Story

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It was the purpose of this study to describe the secondary sex characters and the histological appearance of the gonads, including the associated duct system, of the fish Lebistes reticulatus from birth through differentiation and maturation when subjected to the hormone estradiol. Sixty-four Lebistes reticulatus were fed 0.125 mg of estradiol, beginning at birth, at intervals of 60 hours. An equal number of fish were used as the control. Fish were sacrificed at ten-day intervals following birth, for a period of 80 days, and examined for the presence of secondary sex characters. Serial cross sections of the gonads were prepared …

The Influence Of The Antithyroid Drug, Tapazole, On Reproduction In Rats, Daniel T. Geittmann Jan 1965

The Influence Of The Antithyroid Drug, Tapazole, On Reproduction In Rats, Daniel T. Geittmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The antithyroid drug, Tapazole (methamazole, or imidazole-2-thio, 1-methyl), when fed to female rats at the dietary level of 0.1 % had a slight effect on the average number of young and weight per litter if administered during the preconception period. If given during the gestation period the results were harmful. Tapazole treatment of mothers during lactation resulted in lethargic cretin-like young, although survival rates during lactation and after weaning were good.

Radioisotope Distribution In Visceral Organs Of White Mice, Lester C. Shell, Denzil J. Hawes-Davis, Sam Mcclugage, Steve Livesey Jan 1965

Radioisotope Distribution In Visceral Organs Of White Mice, Lester C. Shell, Denzil J. Hawes-Davis, Sam Mcclugage, Steve Livesey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

White mice, previously medicated over a three week period with reserpine, thyroxine, ascorbic acid and streptomycin were given 0.3 Microcurie or radioactive phosphorus³² by intramuscular injection. After 24 hours the mice were sacrificed, ten organs removed, and the amount of radioactivity retained was recorded in counts per minute per gram. Results showed males retained more of the isotope than females in all organs except gonads and brain. Liver, intestine, and kidney retained more of the isotope than other organs with each medication. With the reserpine medicated animals there was less radioactivity retained by ten organs. The control group had the …

A Pilot Study Of The Thymus Of Propylthiouracil-Treated Rats, Maybelle G. Conklin Jan 1965

A Pilot Study Of The Thymus Of Propylthiouracil-Treated Rats, Maybelle G. Conklin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study of the effects of propylthiouracil on the rat thymus showed histological changes in that tissue. The overall weight of the thymus tissue was reduced in comparison to the thymus weight of the control group. Histologically the thymus of the PTU group showed decreased width in the cortex with fewer lymphocytes and thymic corpuscles in the medullary portion. There appeared to be an intermediate area between the cortex and medulla rather than the distinct demarcation seen between the cortex and medulla of the normal rat thymus. The results observed in these tissues may indicate a retardation in the maturation …

A Quantitative Study Of The Dna And Rna In The Livers Of Albino Mice During The Estrus Cycle, Allan F. Wolfe Jan 1965

A Quantitative Study Of The Dna And Rna In The Livers Of Albino Mice During The Estrus Cycle, Allan F. Wolfe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several investigators have suggested that the nucleic acid content of mouse liver varied with the estrus cycle. Nucleic acids were extracted with trichloroacetic acid and ethanol. The quantity of DNA and RNA was determined with a spectrophotometer. No significant differences were observed in the quantity of DNA or RNA throughout the estrus cycle. Diversity in the amount of nucleic acids present among the livers of non-litter mates was one-third greater that that among litter mates. In studies of the nucleio acid content of mouse liver, little is gained by controlling the estrus cycle, but using litter mates is suggested to …

A Report On A Creative Thesis Project Concerning The Making Of A Film As A Personal Analogy Of Pottery And Natural Environment, Edwin H. Harris Jan 1965

A Report On A Creative Thesis Project Concerning The Making Of A Film As A Personal Analogy Of Pottery And Natural Environment, Edwin H. Harris

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As long as I can remember, I have thought in mental images rather than in abstract ideas. My mind seems to translate sensations to visual mental images that are seen as either vague, colored shapes or as clearly defined forms related visually to a particular sight, sound, feeling, smell, or taste. When stimulated by the senses, the images appear in rapid succession, sometimes without apparent logical order; they may come and go with varying intensity or may present themselves singly or in groups. These images are always present while I am concious [sic]; they are unlike my dreams which move …

Synthesis Of N-Substituted Diamino-Propanols And Their Physiological Effects, Kathren Mortenson, F. C. Pennington

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The p-toluiclinc-epichlorohydrin 1:1 addition compound has been reacted with pipericline, pyrrolicline, and morpholine to give disubstitutecl 2-propanols. 1-(p-Toluiclino)-3-pyrrolidino-2-propanol was fed to male rats and organ and body weights measured. The data do not permit us to evaluate adequately the physiological effects of the compound, but differences were observed in the size of the heart, kidneys, and thymus of the test animals.

The Status Of Oak Wilt In Lowa, Harold S. Mcnabb Jr. Jan 1964

The Status Of Oak Wilt In Lowa, Harold S. Mcnabb Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is intended to review critically and briefly the research being conducted on the oak wilt disease caused by the fungus, Endoconidiophora fagacearum Bretz. Although conditions and work in Iowa will be referred to constantly throughout the course of this review, much of the material will be applicable to the other oak wilt areas of this country. Many old time woodsmen maintain the presence in oak stands at the turn of the century of what we now call oak wilt; but the first definite occurrence of this disease is indicated by photographs taken in the McGregor area in 1932 …
