Reaction Of Aromatic Amines With Epihalohydrins, Orm Aniline, F. C. Pennington Jan 1964

Reaction Of Aromatic Amines With Epihalohydrins, Orm Aniline, F. C. Pennington

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Published procedures for the reaction of primary aromatic amines with epihalohydrins to give 1:1 addition compounds are not generally applicable, and we have found that they frequently lead to impure products. The reactions were investigated in water, alcohol and bromobenzene solutions. A number of techniques were used to follow the reaction. Infrared spectroscopy gave qualitative data since significant changes occur in the 2.5 μ - 3.0 μ and the 10 μ - 11 μ regions of the spectrum. Thin layer chromatography made it possible to detect the formation of by-products and to determine the purity of the addition compounds. The …

Paper Chromatograms Of Body Mucus Of Some Suckers (Family Catostomidae), Gene R. Huntsman Jan 1964

Paper Chromatograms Of Body Mucus Of Some Suckers (Family Catostomidae), Gene R. Huntsman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Phenol:water and butanol:acetic acid:water solvent systems were used with horizontal and descending paper chromatography of the body mucuses of Carpiodes, Catostomus, Ictiobus, Moxostoma, and Hypentelium. Mucus could be sampled in the field, applied to the chromatography paper, allowed to dry, and kept for several days without refrigeration. Chromatograms of fresh and dried mucus appeared the same. Horizontal runs were faster but were abandoned for the greater separation possible with descending techniques. Ninhydrin-stained descending chromatograms showed differences between some genera within a run. Descending chromatograms run in butanol:acetic acid:water and viewed with short wave ultraviolet light showed differences between most genera …

Large Glacial Erratics In Northeast Iowa, Lester P. Engelke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The location of large glacial erratics of gneiss and granite in northeast Iowa, specifically in the tri-county area of Bremer-Fayette-Chickasaw counties is described. Discussed are the possible origin, size, location, detectability on survey photos, and some historical features. Action to provide for protection of these glacial relics against destruction is urged.

Study Of The Frequency Of Color Blindness Among Mentally Retarded Children In The Counties Of Buena Vista, Cherokee, Ida And Sac., Terry L. Penniman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study has shown that there is an appreciably greater frequency of defective color vision among the mentally retarded children in the counties specified than that found in normal children. The general objective of this study was to determine the frequency of color blindness among mentally retarded children in an area of northwest Iowa. The subjects were children in fifteen special education classes for the mentally retarded. The Hardy-Rand-Ritter Pseudoisochromatic plates for detecting, classifying, and estimating the degree of defective color vision were used in this study. The author in all cases did the examining.

Bar Press Behavior Reinforced By Pup Retrieval, N. F. Viemeister, J. Pierce, D. W. Tyler Jan 1964

Bar Press Behavior Reinforced By Pup Retrieval, N. F. Viemeister, J. Pierce, D. W. Tyler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A method was developed to test the reinforcing effects of pup retrieval on the behavior of lactating female rats. A modified bar press chamber was employed. One section of the chamber served as the nest area for the mother and young. The female was taught to bar press in order to be admitted to a retrieving area containing a pup which the female could retrieve and return to the nest. The results indicated that high and sustained rates of bar pressing could he obtained using pup retrieval as the reinforcing event. The data obtained using this method were discussed in …

Observations On The Morphology And Life History Of Oswaldocruzia Sp. In Frogs, B. T. Ridgeway Jan 1964

Observations On The Morphology And Life History Of Oswaldocruzia Sp. In Frogs, B. T. Ridgeway

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A series of experiments were instituted in order to clarify the life history of Oswaldocruzia sp., a nematode of frogs. Suitable hosts were collected and examined for the nematode. Artificial infection of laboratory reared frog tadpoles and young frogs by use of incubated juvenile stages of the parasite was undertaken with negative results. Several reasons are suggested to explain failure of infection attempts. The likelihood that juvenile Oswaldocruzia used experimentally were not infective stages of the parasite is suggested. Morphological characters of the worms support this idea. The possibility that tadpoles and young frogs are refractory to infection, and involvement …

Some Matters Of Concern In The County Conservation Program In Iowa, With Special Reference To Land Use, J. Harold Ennis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Eighty-three of Iowa's 99 counties have established County Conservation Boards. County park areas, river access sites, wildlife areas and roadside parks in that order lead the list in numbers developed to date. Polk, Linn, and Black Hawk counties lead the list in area available with 2544, 2275, and 1952 acres respectively. Special safeguards are urged for administration of lands preserved for scientific purposes.

Dispersal Related To Density In The Amphipods Hyalella Azteca And Gammarus Pseudolimnaeus, Philip T. Clampitt Jan 1964

Dispersal Related To Density In The Amphipods Hyalella Azteca And Gammarus Pseudolimnaeus, Philip T. Clampitt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The relationship between population density and rate of dispersal and tendency to aggregate in two species of fresh-water amphipods, Hyalella azteca (Saussure) and Cammarus pseudolimnaeus Bousfield, was tested by laboratory experiment. Populations of H. azteca showed an inverse relationship between initial density and dispersal rate; this relationship is a function of the tendency of populations of higher densities to form aggregations. The dispersal rate of G. pseudolimnaeus was not appreciably affected by changes in population density, and increased density did not result in aggregation. Both species aggregated around vegetation in preference to aggregation around other amphipods. The non-aggressive behavior and …

Collection And Culture Of Lower Animal Forms, Cameron L. Christensen Jan 1964

Collection And Culture Of Lower Animal Forms, Cameron L. Christensen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The trend in secondary biology is to use living material in so far as it is possible. Biology instruction, as it has advanced beyond the descriptive level, has included more projects requiring living animals. The local collecting and culturing of some of these organisms adds just that much more biological experience to the course.

Experimentally Induced Mammary Tumors In Swiss Mice With Cephalobus (Nematoda Cephalobidae), Robert C. Goss, Robert Stevens Jan 1964

Experimentally Induced Mammary Tumors In Swiss Mice With Cephalobus (Nematoda Cephalobidae), Robert C. Goss, Robert Stevens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Mammary tumors developed when 7-month-old Swiss-Webster female mice were subcutaneously injected with nematodes in the dorsal frontal area of mammary tissue. Reactions observed were loss of vibrissae (47%), development of tumors (24%) and death (10%). Loss of vibrissae occurred within 1 or 2 weeks after the third injection. Tumors developed between the seventh and tenth week. No animal developed multiple tumors involving different regions of the body nor did spontaneous tumor regression occur.
